I think it’s not a matter of what’s really happening harmonically, but a matter of getting that same effect in an easier way.
D is the root of the II chord, the 5th of the V and the 9th of the I, so it’s a good note to concentrate on. That’s why the chooses it to play all this modes in D.
On the II (Dm7) he plays D Dorian, cause, as he says, it is the corresponding mode (same notes as C major). So no mysteries there.
Now, it’s on the V (G7), the dominant, the most tense chord, where he moves away from the tonic in search of more exotic colors. This provides him with some very jazzy notes. D Locrian has the same notes as C minor: Bb (minor 3rd), Eb (minor 6th or 13th), Ab, (minor 9th). That’s a lot of flavor! And D Phrygian has the same notes as Bb major: Bb (minor 3rd), Eb (minor 6th).
On the I (Cmaj7), D Dorian equals to coming back to C major (but emphasizing the 9th). D Mixolydian (same notes as G major), just adds the augmented 4th (F#) he likes so much.
I’m a classically trained musician, and this is how I understand what he’s doing. I hope I was clear enough to help those who didn’t understand it and that they can also start approaching their improvisations this way.
Can you clearify what you mean by he goes three 5th away in opposite direction with both of the possibilities? I got quite confuse about that :D thank you!

Hey mate, sorry to involve in conversation like this but D Phrygian have not the same notes like A major.D Phrygian is the 3 th mode from Bb major , which have to flats Bb and Eb. Hope that’s ok. Cheers

@Herman Renom, your explanation makes way more sense. I think it's more helpful (simpler) to know what the modes are related to the tonic key, not every chord--very confusing. Then, to emphasize a certain scale degree, just SAY that! I basically had to do all the work you did in order to make this practicable, e.g., playing a Dorian over a ii chord is simply playing Ionian on the tonic (which you were already doing) with the ii chord tones emphasized. At the very least, if you are going to talk about modes over a chord, keep it consistent and use the chord (ii on ii, V on V) you are playing on.

I'm a professional Bass Player I play all over and I'm a very good soloist, however after watching some of these guys solo using the different scales it has really taken me to the next level of soloing, once these patterns are learned you become a soloing king in any key... its crazy

Very informative lesson.
It makes so much sense to have the freedom of where to take the sound you want, but having a decent gameplan on giving the notes a certain feeling at a certain time to keep it semi-consistant.

I learned modes years ago, but always kind of kept it one mode per song centered on the key -- plus major or minor pentatonic to create the color and tension, which results in a kind of boxy -- no pun intended -- boring rock n' roll sound. Had never thought of playing a different mode for each chord change. I mean, what can I say, incredibly simple but my mind is blown! Learning new tricks from the pros, thanks!

Having read many of the comments I humbly add the following: There is a certain economy of having a single point of reference to serve as the root of the three scales played over each chord in this case D However, there are several disadvantages in this approach. I'll focus on the idea of D locrian for G7. First, to know what notes to play you have to know either that D locrian is the 7th mode of the Eb major scale or where in general the semitones of the locrian mode occur ( 1-2 and 4-5). By the way the same applies when D locrian is replaced with G phrygian, although G phrygian at least locates the root of the V chord. Second, focusing on modes draws attention away from the chord tones and their harmonic function. Whether D locrian or G phrygian, the chord scale corresponds to G7 sus (C no B) b9(Ab) +9(Bb) b13(Eb). All I'm suggesting is that the idea of using the 7th mode of the Eb major scale be paired with an understanding of the notes in relation to G7 function.
