- Hello everyone,
Lawrie got invited along to the Llangollen to Corwen Railway for a momentous event - the opening of a brand new station, and the completion of the founding members original dreams.
But being Lawrie, he wasn't just turning up for a train ride....

Found you for the first time today. Consider this. Born in Maelor Hospital in Wrexham, 1946, Dad on duty as signalman at Croes Newydd/North Fork signal box, travelled the line many times to visit friends in Bala and kin in Dolgellau, sleeping in the netting of the luggage rack on the way home. Oh, happy days. Tears coming....
I always dreamed that the railway would once again connect Llangollen and Bala. Two of Wales premier heritage towns. The resulting inflo of tourist revenue would spill out along the route to all the towns and villages. The blending of culture one end and the excitement of water sports and some of the best sailing in Wales.the other. Keep going please.
I think this as far as they're planning to go
If only you could have seen it when it was open. The winter trip up to Bala then across to Ffestiniog in the snow was something I still remember from my childhood.
Thank you for this video. It is one of the railways on my bucket list when I visit the UK from Australia. ❤
I agree with your sentiment but I spoke with a member of this railway and unfortunately Corwen is as far as they are taking the line.
Too many barriers to go any further 😢
I absolutely love how No. 1's high pitch whistle going low for a brief moment before stopping at 11:25 makes a sort of "Tuunnel!" announcment and then a "Clear!" as the whistle is blown again when it exits the tunnel.
Steam trains are so damn cool, with little things like that I can't help but feel they really are living things lol
Oh for sure a steam engine is a living thing
Considering where Llangollen were only a couple of years ago, this is phenomenal.
It really is

The use of redundant canopy columns at Corwen adds a real poignancy to the location - it really does look as though it has always been there! What a wonderful day it must have been for all concerned. Mrs tac and I wish the Llangollen Railway every success.
After So Long Its Finally Here!!
Congrats To The Llangollen Railway!
It's a super achievement
@@lmm Indeed it is!
The fireman is a bundle of joy!
I was at Llangollen in September 2020. My wife and I were travelling from Belfast via the Dublin to Holyhead ferry to Oxford to visit our daughter who had started a new post in the hospital. I made a quick detour to get some lunch and got to see the station for the first time. I made certain that we stayed overnight on our return so I could visit again. We stopped at Carrog to watch a train hauled by Foxcote Manor arrive and the locomotive run round. I’m so pleased that the railway has reached Corwen. It is a well deserved achievement. Maybe some day I will manage a visit and actually take a journey on the railway.
The volunteers have done a spectacular job of the new station. Hats off to them.
It's really very good
Had the privilege of riding the railwayfor the Classic Vehicle week-end on 1st/2 nd July. All concerned have done a great job extending the line to Corwen and I have to say, the volunteer staff are so friendly and helpful. The Dee valley is beautiful and you really get to see it in all its glory from the railway.. My only fear, not only for the Llangollen Railway but other heritage lines as well, is the price of coal - I was told by several people (not confirmed) that coal is now £5-600 per ton! That is just ridiculous and it has to come from Kazakstan - how green is that!
What a wonderful effort by all concerned, cheers from Australia.
So good to see this. What is amazing is that many preserved railways have reached, or are approaching 50 years of operation. THat is twice as long as the ‘big 4’ ( lms, lner etc) and as long as the nationalised British Railways.
Amazing to think of that isn't it!
Congratulations to all who were part of this wonderful project. My maternal Grandfather moved to Corwen to work on the railway at Corwen Station, he and his family lived in a cottage opposite the station, my mother was born in one of the cottages in 1920. My family and I have visited the area several times. My Grandfathers brother and family lived in Bala and also worked on the railways. I feel very proud to be connected to the area. I will endeavour to visit the reopened station with my family in the near future, health permitting (we are in our late 70s).
Oh what a lovely connection to the area. I hope you can make it back for a visit!
My Grandfather lived at Carrog nearby.
Used to visit regularly from Scotland, did all The Welsh Railways, and North of England too.
Sorry now Ieft it so late to visit Wales, was in my fifties, but been reading about Welsh Railways since I was a teenager. In my seventies now, health prevents me touring the UK and Europe like I used to. Hope you make it,really miss my little forays to the four corners of the UK.
"Ashing out" looks even worse over there than over here! Goodness. Looks like it was a great day.
No rocking grate or hopper Ashpans!
Austin No1 might have broken the tape (and quite rightly so) but it's our little Austerity that has kept them in steam for the last couple of years :) As a trustee of the Austerity (and a couple of other locos) very proud to have been invited to the reopening and of course was good to see you and your assistant(!) too :)
As I said to you at the time, the Austerity is the perfect engine for heritage. Does pretty much anything, goes pretty much anywhere.
Looked very smart too.
Nice to have a catch up
Austin 1 was there from the start and so we have a special affection for her. We can remember the people that kept her going who have long since passed. All the locos are important to the railway especially the Austerity which has played an important role in keeping the line going over more difficult times.
@@levelcrossing150 as said we fully understand why it did the job and what a wonderful thing to be the engine that started it all to "finish the job" as it were was meant more how pleased and proud we are as a trust to have been able to assist the revitalisation by providing our engine to keep Llangollen in steam as it were. The other bonus being the money she's been earning will help pay for the return to steam of our LMS 3F next year hopefully. Also very pleased that our Austerity looks set to be staying with you for the remainder of 2023 too. Hopefully the 3F will make an appearance with you guys when the time is right too :)
Just over 10 years ago, when I reached what would normally be retirement age, I treated myself to a small woodland which overlooks the Horseshoe Falls; so I am able to listen and watch as the Trains go by, and hear their whistle as they approach the tunnel. I'm not a 'Railway Enthusiast' as such: but I was fortunate enough to do a lot of work for railway companies and even helped to fit OTMR, AWS etc to some famous Locos: Britania, K4, No. 9 and others. Very interesting work. I think it is fantastic what can be achieved by determined volunteers.
Oh that's a lovely place to be!
It's always nice to see additions to railways.
Isn't it just
What a fantastic video Lawrie. I certainly enjoyed the different camera angles that were used in this video. It is nice to see that the railway has reached its final goal of it's extension to Corwen.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I'm in the states and love what so many in the UK are doing to preserve the railway heritage.
There's so much good stuff over here!
Lovely video and very professional. Great shots and excellent editing assisted with interesting drone shots. Great to see the line back into Corwen, a marvellous job by all involved.
Thank you very much!
Great to see it completed and all the well proportioned infrastructure as it sits in the geography looking smart and tidy and right. Not forgetting my driver/fireman cousin Paul R on the footplate of Austin 1 who has kept me updated for years on this magnificent project.
It's good to have someone in the know!
What a wonderful video and opportunity for you to be there Lawrie. As a fellow preservationist it brought a tear to my eye. How brilliant
Thank you for a lovely video Lawrie; nice seeing the preparations and the views along the line from various perspectives.
Have a look at the Looe branch line in Cornwall, when they do steam runs.
It’s said its one of the most amazing views going
The station will be great as a film location.
That brake pipe seemed to have something against you wearing a hat seeing as it took it off once and nearly took it off a second time. Great video, Lawrie
Thank you, yes it did seem to dislike me!
Fantastic video Lawrie, would you be able to explain to those who are not sure how the drivers of double headed steam trains keep in sync so one is not pushing or pulling more than the other? I know the simple answer is skill and practice but it would make an interesting comment. 👍
The idea is lead engine should be pulling the drawbar of the following, but it's really down to route knowledge.
This is uphill and we're not making good enough progress. I'll open the Regulator some more
Good work lads and lasses, some who never lived long enough to see the rest, so don't forget them, mostly back breaking work, lovely job, great filming also. Cheers
AWESOME!!!!! I remember my time when I went in 2013 on my trip from Australia. I was hoping to see it extended one day. Fantastic to see!
It's very exciting!

Your videos get so much better each time❤
Thank you!
That train driver is an extremely happy chappie eh!
I noticed that this line could also extend further past the Llangollen station just under the bridge and along the banks where the old line was, maybe worth mentioning but I'd love to see it get more upgrades
I really hope that happens
@@riparadis it would seem appropriate and amazing if they did
I don't think there are any plans to extend further
@@lmm Never say no, in the past light conversation about something has been the start of something new. Back in the early 70's there were people that said we would never achieve this.
Pretty sure there’s flats and a small housing estate and a new medical centre been built over the old trackbed
Oh that is exiting. And I'm sure there will be more stuff like this for many times to come.
I sure hope so!
@@lmm Oh I bet there will. I also look forward to seeing more episodes of Lawrie Goes A Little Loco. And lots of other series too. 😃
This was really enjoyable
Glad you enjoyed it
This is wonderful. Cheers to everyone and please visit if you can! (I live in the US and cannot easily do so, unfortunately...)
Glad you enjoyed it!
How do you get such phenomenal video? You must have oodles of camera people and drones. It’s not only entertaining, but amazing photography! 👍🏼
- a fan from across the pond.
This was all just Charles and I!
@@lmm i’d love to see a video on the logistics of how you film! While the train is running you have shots of you in the cab, shots from the sky, shots crossing a bridge, eye level shots as the train goes through a crossing, shots as the train comes into the new station! Amazing to me.
It was quite the challenge. Two days worth of filming!
Spectacular job Brother thank you for sharing your adventure with us and hello from Detroit Michigan USA Great video Brother
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Some great camera angles Lawrie.. I love the shot coming out of Berwyn Tunnel
Thank you - me too!
this is history in the making and Lawrie this video is really well done !
Thank you!
awesome sounds 😊
Did sound good
Beautiful scenery and production, nice one Lawrie 👍 “the water in the river was blue” was a bit of a stretch though, looked very brown to me 😂
It looked blue from the footplate!
Fantastic video once again. I really enjoyed it. I think your drone pilot deserves a mention. The aerial shots were superb.
That's me! So thank you
@@lmm I am even more impressed now. Keep up the good work.
I travelled on the train to corwen in1959 and 6o.its wonderful to see the new station in use after all this time .reg c Upminster.
It's very exciting!
Thank you for sharing this with us. Really enjoyed it!
You're most welcome buddy
Fabulous Thankyou. Rode this train a couple of weeks ago when staying in Llangollen in the same incredible weather. Don’t miss it if you get the chance.
That’s a nice signal box
I agree. I wonder if they will install ventilators on the roof. It looks a bit naked!
I used to love working on Austin 1. real pain the rear to maintain but when she goes, heads turn.
It's a nice little thing
@@lmm nice when I didnt have to clean the driving rods under the boiler (no service pit at the SDJR) 😂
Wonderful achievement.
Now that is cool right there. One of my favourite things about this channel is when the fire of a steam locomotive is lit. I also hope to get some LMM merch soon.
Excellent! Thanks for supporting us!
Done a nice job on the station.
Good camera work and choice of angles, closeups and drone footage. Thanks for the entertaining commentary, "The Engine was relarively happy", whatever that means!
There has been some issues earlier, but she'd recovered
@@lmm You did a good job with the oil can!
So wish I could of been there as my name is Corwin lol so close gonna have to go and get a picture by the station sign
The Station is now open for regular trains, so go visit!
@@lmm oh intend to 😁😁
"That is not over oiling, it's preservation."
🤣🤣🤣
They really put you to work on this one!
Good day though!
Nice one Lawrie ! This is on my list while I’m in Wales with William and the T4 in August…
Well worth a visit!
Looking at the satellite images, there's little obstruction as far as buildings go if they want to relink to the Bala Lake Railway and head north to a mainline connection at Blaenau Ffestiniog. The only big obstruction after that is Dolgellau since the A470 is right on top of the old line. Without it, there'd be another undisturbed mainline connection at Morfa Mawddach.
I don't think there are any plans to extend further
@@lmm Given how close they were to closing recently, I'm not surprised. Which is a shame. These massive extension ideas have so much potential.
@@mlp-hot-rod5824 I don't think they do.
The line is a good length now, running through some lovely scenery and links two towns. There is very little advantage to going further, but significantly higher costs in maintaining both the permanent way and rolling stock.
Great video. Thanks
what an increadible achievement, and a stellar video :) keep nailing it.
Thank you very much!
This is a very good looking station Great job everyone who made it 2:29 and also my name is Austin too
They've done a super job
Never saw steam or tank engines for that manner run in push pull. Really cool
Looks a bit strange doesn't it!
We had 600 mm narrow gauge locomotives in Germany(and what today is Namibia) that were built to run in pairs. One half even had the roof a bit higher so that it could go above the roof of the other half. Basically the whole thing was a 0-6-0+0-6-0 and a bit similar to a Fairlie. The cabs were open at the rear so that one crew could operate both locomotives. Both halves were complete locomotives and could (and did) run on their own.
TY Lawrie 🙏🙏
You're most welcome
thanks Lawrie.
You're most welcome
I did the boiler for Robert at it last overhaul. The owner is a top bloke.
Absolutely beautiful
It is!
Hope you come back this year because GWR 2884 Class ‘3802’ is returning to traffic this year!
My Grandfather travelled from Corwen to London in early 1900 .he was Edward Evans.
Laurie, you should come down to the Dean Forest Railway to make a video about the northern extension from Parkend when it’s completed!👍
If the railway would like to give me an official invite and do something similar, I'd love to
@@lmm I will ask them next time I go there which is next weekend
A great video well done please support your local railway they all need money keep up the good work
They do need your support!
I accidentally ended up at that station's car park to take a break when I was driving from Porthmadog to Stoke on Trent recently and I was so confused cause I thought the line terminated in Carrog, guess I was right till a little over a year ago
marvellous
As a lover of steam this is a great video. It's great to see the Llangollen doing so well with Austin & 68067 knocking the rust off the rails. Its whetting my appetite for a visit to the line. I'm curious though. Is Phil the tank a friend of Thomas the bucket ?
😂 😂
It's well worth a visit!
Love the edit at 19 minute's your driver turns instantly younger and grows curly hair 👍
It's just the angle 😂
Is wonderful to see that Corwen Station has opened as I have visited this railway a lot
It's a huge achievement
Lovely to meet you on the day, Lawrie! Super video too
You too!
lovely
If it could be extended to connect Ruabon to Bala it actually might make for a viable standard commuter line by connecting into the national rail network
As its a preservation line, they would not want that.
Austin 1 came back from its visit to the Somerset and Dorset railway
Maybe one day it can be extended all the way down the old line through Bala, Dolgellau to Morfa Mawddach and then over the bridge to Barmouth. Now that would be a full restoration!!
I suspect it will not happen. The line is a perfect length now!
There are fewer things more sexy than vintage steam locomotives out for a run. :)
Looked good didn't it!
I’m a fan
TIL, according to Wikipedia.. "The first use of a signal box was by the London & Croydon Railway in 1843 to control the junction to Bricklayers Arms in London." quite interesting.
I didn't know that
@@lmm Me either, so when you said Signal box I had to go see all about that. Might be an episode in that to see if the first one still exists or where it would have been if it isnt.
I am a little confused. I remember a few years ago (6 ?) being able to take a train from Corwen to Llangollen an back. True the permanent station and platforms had not been built but they were running revenue earning trains
There was never a run round loop, so either had to be dmu or top and tailed trains, so I think wasn't in regular use.
I snuck into the tepo
I've always found it interesting how American steam locomotives have big honkin' chonkin' headlights and reversing lights permanently attached to the locomotive and tender, (Which originally burned whale oil or kerosene, but were eventually electrified) While almost every other country used those tiny little things that had to be installed and removed, which also never got electrified as far as I know. And realistically, how much light do those little things actually put out?
They're marker lights. The position tell you what the approaching train is.
We didn't have lights on the locos to see
@@lmm Ah, that explains a lot, we have marker lights and class lights too, though running at night without a headlight seems rather dangerous, no?
@@sambrown6426 our lines are mostly fenced off, so there shouldn't be anything there, and be the time you see it, you're not stopping anyway
@@lmm Fair enough. I guess you guys probably aren't hauling mile-long trains across the great plains at 70mph.
It would be lovely if the full line was open, A train from Barmouth ,Dolgellau,Bala,Corwen ,Carrog,Glyndyfrdwy,Llangollen to Ruabon then merge on to the Wrexham Line to Wrexham General . It is a shame the land just out side Llangollen has been built on, back in the day you could catch the train in Wrexham all the way to Barmouth the only way to do that now is the T3 bus. I was at Corwen Station last summer about late August/September and it was looking good then That Beaching bloke killed a lot of railway's in this country once again uk goverment interfering in Wales A lot of village's were connected by railways especially around the Wrexham area the local coal mines ,Brymbo steel works apart from the main lines it's gone Great video i must get on the line again for another steam adventure Take care and enjoy your next adventure😀🛤🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃👍👍👍
Remember, without Beeching we wouldn't have all the preserved railways that we do!
@@lmm A valid point ,Lawrie and the Llangollen railway is amazing been on it many a time including Thomas the tank engine with my son when he was young ,and it is local to me I am only about 12 miles away near Wrexham but up to the 1960's these were service and cargo lines, At the end of the day it is good to see these engines and trains alive and running Thanks for the feed back mate🚂👍
So Reading Green Park did not have the newest station in Britain title for very long.
Exactly
Yep!
Can not express my feelings in one comment. I can only say that if the Ticket cost even £1000, I will travel by these route on this train one day.
I'm pleased to say they cost a lot less than that
Hi Lawrie, is this the permanent terminus,or are there plans to go any further?,I believe that a narrow gauge heritage line is running on a further section of the route, anyway, thanks for sharing, take care, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.
I think this is it. It's sensible length and they've done what they set out to do
7:28 I'm having flashbacks to the Russian Second Pacific Fleet.
Now on to Bala 🙈
Just seen the comment beneath, if I ever become rich I will pay for it to happen 🫶🏻
Goods were never transported by boat on the river Dee at Corwen.
It was more river road and rail
@@lmm Transportation to Corwen was just by road before the original railway first arrived in 1865 - the river Dee was never used for transportation.
I never said it was.
