Yeah, I agree 100% with you. In my opinion, bad drumming happens (among the many variables) when drummers are unable to lock into a tempo and groove with it. Good drummers, on the other hand, instinctively add 'feel' to what they are playing and know exactly how to subdivide the tempo into quarter notes, eighth notes, or quarter note triplets (just to name a few examples of metrical subdivision).

I believe thrash bands were more popular because of their guitar sound not so much the drumming. Lars is a good drummer and I don't know why he gets bashed unless at some point he said he was the best. When I think of Metallica I think of guitars not drumming.
It’d be fun if you did this again, but did a few that are more about the composition. I think both Master of Puppets and Holy Wars have solid beats that compliment the song, so it’d be interesting to hear a solid beat, but it doesn’t fully hit the dynamics of the song itself (think easy/Fake book version if that makes sense)
For me, Bad Timing = Bad Drumming. I REALLY appreciate good drumming, BUT, it’s only a bad night if the drummer speeds up, slows down, or just can’t keep the beat. Love how the ”bad drumming” is not over-done and sounds realistic enough that you could hear it in a coverband.
Lars isn't a terrible drummer. But he's definitely not the best. Can we all agree on that?
