I spent my high school years in a diesel shop, 3 hours every morning. We had one of these, with the turbos. We had a bunch of 6-71 marine engines, a 6-71 generator (AC), sundry V8 Cats and the most awesome engine... a 6 cylinder tug boat motor. Top RPM? 700! The stroke was almost 6 feet! The subsonics were so intense at 700 RPM that you could scream at the guy next to you and he could NOT hear you! Every open house we fired that girl up!

sounded like it was missing, but i don't know much about 2 stroke diesel or diesel in general. reminded me of a chainsaw with year old gas and a gummed up carb. I'll give it to him though he is doing what i dream of.
The blowers are there to perform fuel scavenging. They don't add to the power, just make a 2-stroke diesel functional in the first place. You want to boost that thing and you need a second set of superchargers or turbos.
One of my friends dad had and drove one of those V-12 71 series Peter haulers in the early 70's I still hear him coming home after a long spell on road. There was a big down hill grade . He'd drop a couple of gears and let the compression bring her down. Man oh man those twin stacks would talk
I absolutely love the old 2 stroke Detroit’s. I’m building a rat rod from a 1933 doge tow truck that I’m building a silver 92 for. This is great inspiration
Freight company I drove for (C-F)in 60s used the V-12 powered Freightliners to pull the 45' doubles across the In.,Oh. and N.Y. toll roads. They had awesome sound under full load.
Problem is they're like a young girl, cruisin town they talk a good game, but get them out in the country and they don't put out. Lol Sound good though.
I think this guy sets a high example for all people in the world to follow. You can be an absolute genius, and still be very humble. The Detroit diesels are the best sounding diesels. I'd actually drive a 2 stroke diesel if I knew how to work on them, and if they still had parts. But they do sound very expensive and not practical.
+crashandburnbirner I never knew there was such a thing. I wonder how the oiling works. is it like a chainsaw engine where the fuel is the oil or will it have a regular oil pan and pump set up.
+weirdstuffanimation7 Regular oil pan and oil sump. The diesel is injected like conventional diesels, except it is every other stroke instead of every 4th stroke.
I love the engines ! The exhaust really makes them sound pretty awesome Randy is a artist for sure its kind of one of those things where you have to answer the question why do you drive that thing? Answer is because i can lol. If i was in Jays situation I would too
Ignignokt Mooninite 2 stroke detroits where never naturally aspirated, they dont have intake valves, they have an air box that is set up with the fuel governer in the v gallery and oval cut holes in the sleeves to get air. Must be turboed or supercharged, most where both.
Jacob Roach It's true they aren't "technically" naturally aspirated , we in the industry called non turbo versions "naturals" as in 8V71N . As opposed to 1271TI etc . I've overhauled or repaired probably a couple hundred in boats in 30 years .
I used to machine sone OEM parts for Detroit diesel back in the day at Royal oak boring. Manifolds, turbos, and others. Also did 454 iron blocks and 350 heads for GM OEM parts. Great to see some of the stuff still out there.
Jay that's nuts. one of the most amaazing customs you ever done a video on... especially with a two stroke diesel. Two stroke engines don't require valve trains. The weight and moving parts reduction make two stroke ideal for snowmobile and outboard boat engine design. Having no windshield wipers makes the car marginally useful anywhere but desert like climates.
I love Randy's builds. He is a true automotive artist. I share some of these outlandish ideas about cars and look at vehicles for what they can potentially be. I like to daydream up ideas and have a high level of attention to detail along with what my wife calls extreme OCD..
Is this a car? Because plates goes on cars...nothing here that would make it street legal. No way a street legal production of this car would be a bloodbath.
The turbo will muffle the exhaust sound...as the exhaust turns the turbo blades to ram in more air.(so it acts like a half-muffler) which means you lose the cool multi chrome pipe look as it is directed back into the turbo
Thanks for that. I was wondering what the displacement was in liters. He mentioned that its likely a power plant engine and 14 liters for a power plant engine is actually very small. The diesel engine in the plant I run is 60.1 liters with 4 turbo chargers which makes it good for about 3500 horse power. That's a more typical power plant engine.
Pretty amazing sculpture/vehicle. I just wish they had a better street to drive it on; I have gotten TWO tickets on that road, over by the Burbank airport. The cops hide off to the side.
A few years back I had the pleasure of meeting Randy at his home...a real character and a great artist with metal.

MY WHOLE FLIPPING BEDROOM IS RUMBLING!!! GOOD LORD!!!
I absolutely love the old 2 stroke Detroit’s. I’m building a rat rod from a 1933 doge tow truck that I’m building a silver 92 for. This is great inspiration
Hope we git to see it.
A true artist and mechanical genius!!!
The real mileage is probably measured in gallons per mile
2.5-4.5 mpg
Smiles per gallon instead of miles per gallon
He hinted that he could make 100 miles on 35 gallons, if you behaved. That’s approx. 3mpg
That is some horrendous fuel mileage
Fortunately he could get that mileage pulling a 31ft airstream straight up the grand canyon thanks to that 2 stroke Detroit diesel.
We have one of these on our dock as a generator
Wow Jess, can you put it up please?
When Peterbilts were built in Oakland, the factory made 12V71 semi tractors.

Whats the fuel : oil ratio?
@@jupitercyclops6521 100 to 0. They have a separate pressurized oiling system.
@@jupitercyclops6521
we used to always say check the gas and fill the oil!
Freight company I drove for (C-F)in 60s used the V-12 powered Freightliners to pull the 45' doubles across the In.,Oh. and N.Y. toll roads. They had awesome sound under full load.
we had the turbo version in school. teacher had it on a engine stand. its one sweet sounding engine.
Waaaaaaaaay cool. I could see this on The Munsters.
What a BEAST !!!! Beautiful ..
That car is over the top, unnecessary, impractical, ridiculous.....AND I LOVE IT!!
Nothing sounds quite like a Detroit Diesel.
Yep, very special engines that aren't talked about enough.
Yes a diesel generator.
Nothing looks like Blastolines cars !
Problem is they're like a young girl, cruisin town they talk a good game, but get them out in the country and they don't put out. Lol
Sound good though.
Diesel generator finally got his wheels!
Very cool setup, very cool car! It's a real damn shame that the comments are full of so much negativity about this piece of art..
If Satan drove a car, I imagine it would look and sound like that
Gibbet Hoskins
actually it would be a prius , with a rainbow sticker on the bumper.
Gibbet Hoskins no it would sound like a prius
An old ford pickup without rust
Gibbet Hoskins agreed this is really a strange car it looks evil
+Darryl D. Ruggs LOL. You got that right
I just want to thank you for having this UA-cam Station
The inside view looks like you're driving a B-17.
The war rig lives on! Witness its glory, my brothers! WITNESS!!!!!!!
Awsome build and choices !!!
I met with his guy through Jay’s channel and he always makes me smile with his amazing creations. He is an artist. Amazing vehicle!!!!!
"sensible cars like the Viper" I want to reach a point in my life where I consider a Dodge Viper to be a sensible car.
Paint it black and it's Mad Max worthy
Recently re-watched Mad Max Fury Road. This would be Furiosa's grocery getter lol.
2 stroke diesel ? VERY impressive.
+Steven Lamphear Detroit diesel
+crashandburnbirner I never knew there was such a thing. I wonder how the oiling works. is it like a chainsaw engine where the fuel is the oil or will it have a regular oil pan and pump set up.
+weirdstuffanimation7 Regular oil pan and oil sump. The diesel is injected like conventional diesels, except it is every other stroke instead of every 4th stroke.
Steven Lamphear Very interesting Thank you.
weirdstuffanimation7 it helps lubricate valves too.
I love the engines ! The exhaust really makes them sound pretty awesome Randy is a artist for sure its kind of one of those things where you have to answer the question why do you drive that thing? Answer is because i can lol. If i was in Jays situation I would too
I'd love to see the oil slick this left behind. I've never seen a Detroit that didn't leak.
my dad had this engine in his old fishing trawler :)
Very common marine engine . Naturally aspirated versions will run a very long time .
yea he has had the same engine in it since 1976 XD
Ignignokt Mooninite 2 stroke detroits where never naturally aspirated, they dont have intake valves, they have an air box that is set up with the fuel governer in the v gallery and oval cut holes in the sleeves to get air. Must be turboed or supercharged, most where both.
the one my old man had was a 4 stroke twin turbocharged
Jacob Roach
It's true they aren't "technically" naturally aspirated , we in the industry called non turbo versions "naturals" as in 8V71N . As opposed to 1271TI etc . I've overhauled or repaired probably a couple hundred in boats in 30 years .
I think it would of looked better with a small truck bed on the back. give it the classic 50's pickup truck bed look
Rightt HHand I totally agree. I think it needs a bed. Without it it just looks unfinished.
i agree
I agree al well
Its a Peterbilt not a Chevy pickup
It's styled from a semi truck without a trailer my friend
Haha doesn't he remind you of that character on Seinfeld who got up real close to everyones face ?
Most gangster looking car I've ever seen.
Plenty of these went into trucks in the oilfield (and I suspect into logging trucks).
Buzzin’ Dozen.
I used to machine sone OEM parts for Detroit diesel back in the day at Royal oak boring. Manifolds, turbos, and others. Also did 454 iron blocks and 350 heads for GM OEM parts. Great to see some of the stuff still out there.
I live in the UK I I'd like to say God bless America...
Randy is one cool nerd!
Communism Now HA-! FOR ONCE WE AGREE ON SOMETHING!!!
Working Class Socialist .....He looks efn stoned .....
"Down boy! DOWN!!" Omg, you can feel the testosterone through the video. The attention to detail is amazing!
Love them screaming Detroit diesels. I run a 16V 92 pump unit a couple of days a month. Turbo and supercharger about 900 hp more or less.
I love Randy's builds. He is a true automotive artist. I share some of these outlandish ideas about cars and look at vehicles for what they can potentially be. I like to daydream up ideas and have a high level of attention to detail along with what my wife calls extreme OCD..
No sir if you had extreme OCD like me then you would not be able to do the things you like nor be able to work!
Don't need license plates in California?
Is this a car? Because plates goes on cars...nothing here that would make it street legal. No way a street legal production of this car would be a bloodbath.
It’s really an incredible design. Rat rod on steroids. Nice work.
This guys vehicles are, by far, the best examples of a structure designed around an engine. ( With the possible exception of fighter jets. )
Hi Jay much respect to you for your stance and assistance you provided for our military especially the wounded. FOD Bless you.
Rudy
Mannnn I wish they ran the turbo version, I really want to hear that diesel turbo whistle~
The turbo will muffle the exhaust sound...as the exhaust turns the turbo blades to ram in more air.(so it acts like a half-muffler) which means you lose the cool multi chrome pipe look as it is directed back into the turbo
@@bunzeebear2973 We out here replying to 7yr old comments lol
Everyone buy a hybrid this guy needs your gas
You mean diesel
There's bio diesel
harisnaeem7 diesel
Cooking oil
Lol
you can't help but smile when you hear that engine roar
Great car Jay! Reminds me of a Hotwheels car I had as a kid!
The Detroit V12 two-stroke diesels are the best sounding diesels there are!
yah it doesn't get more hotrod than them as far as diesel gose
WHAT. ????
I really like how Jay keeps these videos "Classy" with his ever-present Canadian Tuxedos.
14 Litre for my non american friend
"Entire world but America"
@@BlueBird-wb6kb Except it's spelled "liter", same as "meter", everywhere but UK.
@@jond3929 I imagine putting that in a car would be highly impractical though.
ENGINE VALUES: 852 Cubic Inches, 13.9 Liter, 14,000 CC engine. 500 Horsepower and 1000 Ft/lbs of torque @ 2500 RPM.
Pretty amazing sculpture/vehicle. I just wish they had a better street to drive it on; I have gotten TWO tickets on that road, over by the Burbank airport. The cops hide off to the side.
Imagine the thrill and euphoria the designer/builder, Randy, felt the first time he cranked and drove P.O.P. !! Jeez whata set of wheels !
Can imagine how loud that thing is with open headers !!!
Create Videos Now , Should come with noise cancelling headphones.
I would love to be like this when I'm older and just get to build random stuff
Samuel Harris , Just curious... since it was made by a kid, how old would that make you?
