  • We're back at Jay Leno's shop in California to have some fun in his "Room of the Giants." They fire up a 1917 Fiat Botafogo Special, and of course Jay keeps Dennis on the edge of his seat when they take this massive road rocket out on the streets of LA. But first, we check out a pair of early-1900s mega roadsters with airplane engines; Jay’s 300HP Hispano Suiza and a 1921 Benz-Mercedes Race Car.
    A giant room full of Jay’s giant cars. You know we had a blast with this one! Check them out.
    0:41 - 1915 Hispano Suiza with 300 HP 1915 V8 Hispano Suiza aero engine
    2:40 - 1921 Benz-Mercedez “Rabit 1” Race Car with a Benz Zeppelin engine
    5:30 - 1917 Fiat Botafogo Special with 21.7 L 6-Cylinder motor

      You HAVE to change some stuff. He jokes about it, but some of those really old cars can't slow down much. To make them safe to take on the road, you have to do something about the brakes, if nothing else.

    • @TopVersnelling
      @TopVersnelling 6 років тому +19

      They don't even have to be very old to need some changes. Take the video of the Diablo on Jay's channel. It's a 90s era car, but it still was in need of new brakes, as the default ones weren't sufficient for the ~500hp that beast delivers.

    • @ClayLoomis1958
      @ClayLoomis1958 6 років тому +30

      True. If I had a 3500 pound car that went 200 miles an hour, I wouldn't just want good brakes, I'd want an anchor too. Leave it to Chrysler to go cheap on brakes. But some of his really old cars only had brakes on two wheels, and bad ones at that. Unless you're driving one of his traction engine steamers, which can't top 5 mph, you want brakes all the way around.

    I absolutely love Jay Leno’s Garage, Jay has possibly the largest selection and greatest variety of cars. Jay appears to get as much enjoyment out sharing as I do viewing. Listening to him describe the details of design and construction reflect a true appreciation for the craft of automotive engineering. Telling the back story and history of acquisition is a great way to honor others. “I think it’s time to go for a ride” (Jay Leno)

    This freeway scene reminds me of when i saw Jay in Thousand Oaks, maybe 25 years ago, in an open car almost a ike this. He was the passenger, there was an old guy driving with an old leather hat with earmuffs, and aviator type goggles on. I passed them going up the grade, Jay looked over, I have him a thumbs up, he gave me a smile and a wave, and I kept going. Cool cars! Glad they're still being preserved for history's sake.

    Respect for both of these guys. I've been watching Dennis Gage for literally YEARS, and Jay Leno, he was hosting the Tonight Show when I was a kid and I'm 37 now. I have always been a diehard car guy, so Jay has always had my respect. The fact that Jay has this wonderful dream garage, employs certain guys to maintain his fleet, and is ALWAYS happy to show it off, has his own UA-cam channel just to highlight his cars as well as others that hold historical significance, I mean, he's a God in the automotive world. I mean, he owns the Blastolene Special...and he loves to drive it and show it off. Dennis has his own following, and I remember when he had hair...lol They're both great automotive legends and to see them interacting on the same show is so cool to me.

    The fact that he remembers all these little details about over three hundred vehicles so effortlessly is a testament to his intelligence. And that's typical for an actor or someone who does stand-up. I could study a few lines for days and need ten takes to do it acceptable. People like Jay can read over a script once and nail it in one take. For sure when you're really interested in something it's much easier to remember things, and I'm that way about cars also, but regardless how he may appear, he is genius level to do what he does.
