I knew an unscrupulous genius who bolted a Chevy engine to a Ford transmission & stuck it in a Chrysler vehicle. Then he sold it to an old lady and made a profit. He was fun to hang with. Even drilled a hole through the side of a refrigerator to keep his beer keg cold and have the convenience of an external tap.
Having been brought up around old airplanes and adding my love for all things automobile, I found this project mesmerizing! The combining of the Golden age of aviation and the automobile became greater than the parts! It reminded me of seeing an elderly couple, who'd been together for 60 years, but were sitting on a park bench, holding hands, and looking at one another with that same spark they'd felt for one another at eighteen! Together, that spark lit a fire. That fire not only warmed their lives, but those of everyone that saw them together, and realized that true love that lasted a lifetime, did exist! That's how this project made me feel when I saw how that old Cessna/Jacobson Radial and all the other aviation influence made that old '39 something it never dreamed it could be!!! The guys from Denver really did both aviation and the classic car world a favor bringing the two together in such an amazing way!! Thank you to them, and to Jay for showing us!
Love the look, design and sound and that it's from a salvage yard and father, sons and friends put this together and had a great time doing it! It's beautiful rolling art!
@Furio I just checked...the B-29 engine had 18 cylinders (two 9-cylinder engines fastened together) and produced 2,200 horsepower, although "it had an unfortunate tendency to catch fire."
I believe that is potentially one avenue of the many possibilities, swirling around in Jay's forebrain~ ( BTW- glad to see yet another industry brother, brother )
I've seen this truck many times online, but never seen it run. That is awesome! My dad would of loved this video. He was a aircraft mechanic for over 50 years as well as my brother and me both were. Our specialty was aircraft restoration. We lost dad in 2011. Both myself and my brother are both retired from our business as well. I enjoy all of your videos Jay! Keep em coming!
I'm an aircraft and shady tree car mechanic. This mechanical fusion is like being with two girls at once. It's something I'll never pull off, but it's nice to know it happens.
The girls at once is when the other girls guy goes off to work and you were sharing the bed with your girls roommate cause that was the only bed....even if nothing happened, you were sandwiched it until proven otherwise...
Loud noise dosen't hurt the ears that fast... I ran a ported chainsaw for years, it could actually rattle my eardrums around when I got in between root flair of a tree. It hurt, but I don't think I lost any hearing. What has damaged my hearing is being hit physically on the side of the head.
@@johnmurgo7725 except I don't love it, I think their jacking up and molesting the automobiles, shoving their overally chromed engines and 2015 rims with thick tires on it and "half assing" a paint job or either burn your eyes red or radioactive green. I hate them ever so dearly, my father did as well with the kids in the 1930s and 1940s messing them up.

Love this salvage yard, the guys at Colorado helped me for years when I lived in Denver to keep my cars up and running, Even today, I like to stop by there when I am in town, they always seem to have everything I need somewhere in the yard! For car guys it's Disneyland.
😂😂 I once almost tricked one of my girls with that statement. I said, "I'm going to Disney, aka the salvage yard," and she said, "I want to go!!!" Mama said, "Are you sure? He's going to his Disney, the junk yard." 😂😂😂
Normally I would _NOT_ be into something like this. But, it was _SUPREMELY_ cool. Plus the whole father/son/son/junkyard thing was great too. My _sincere_ complements to everyone involved.

I’m 76 Yrs old and that’s the darnest thing I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen Manny radials as farming we had a lot of crop dusters to dust and spray our crops here in South Texas, thanks again for another wonderful video.
With my dad and a friend, we put a 4 cylinder lycoming airplane engine on a log splitter. That thing would crack any knot we could find in any tree, or tree stump, into firewood. I sure do miss those two guys in my life. This truck reminds me of those days. Life is for doing the unusual, having fun, and never being stuck in that rut of being practical all the time. That way you get wonderful projects just like this truck. Thanks Jay for reminding me of that experience in my own life.
I was at AIRVENTURE (world's largest airshow of experimental, antique, classic and warbird airplanes) yesterday, saw a whole row of Cessna 195s. Beautiful airplanes. This guy did a great job of combining auto & aircraft parts.
I have seen plenty plenty of static radial engine displays in rural Australia which were loud and smokey but this project tops them all. Awesome. Best one yet Jay. Keep them coming.

Just found this episode. Thank you for spending a little time on the Clark Tug. Many years ago I spent an evening trying to get a Clark to do donuts in soiled hay. It was tough. Never really got the rear to break loose but I did start a little fire. Good times. Oh the truck is pretty neat too. The V-Drive was a clever idea.
I commend the effort and the want to create a truly unique vehicle. Love the radical idea of a Radial Engine in a very cool and rare pick up. True hot rodding at its best
Great video Jay, America loves you and the great cars! I bet most folks don't know that Sherman Tanks in WW2 originally had 9 cylinder radial engines as their drive engines! Later a crazy complicated 30 cylinder Chrysler multibank diesel, and then finally its best engine (according to the Army) was the DOHC, 4 valve per cyl, flat plane crank, all aluminum 1100cu inch Ford V8. It was 500Hp and over 1000ftlbs all in by 2600 rpm! Cams had no belt or chain it was a incredible gear driven assembly. It was ironically, originally a 12 cylinder fighter aircraft engine designed in the late1930s, that Ford chopped off 4 cylinders from. (Rolls Royce had already secured the aircraft fighter engine contract unbeknownst to Ford.) It was by far the easiest Sherman tank engine to service and was extremely dependable despite being all aluminum and many many thousands of lbs lighter than the other engines. 30,000 were made according to historical figures.
most radial engines are air cooled, I don't think you'd be able to setup some type of cooling system for each individual cylinder (unless you're some type of wizard). Idk just my guess
TheOne AndOnly I know they're usually air cooled. But they're also usually going 150mph way up high. Putting some water jackets around the cylinders wouldn't be too hard, but would take away a lot of the aesthetic
midget racers have designed heads for air cooled motorcycles back in the 50s (maybe earlier) to make them water cooled. Just takes the right person with the correct skills drinking or smoking the right thing on the right night for it to happen.
That body style looks absolutely sick, it looks like Gene Simmons pick truck imo, the airplane themed exposed sheet metal and rivets looks so aggressive combined with the hot rod truck, amazing ❤️
YO LENO! How about you show US that bike with a radial engine in the front wheel. SHOW US MORE OF Y O U R vehicles and tell us the stories behind them. I'm sure others agree. Not that I don't like theese shows, they're great. But still, it's Jay Lenos garage.
Yo Leno, The real interesting vids are your buys, stories and fixes! What I'm really curious about is the stories how you came about finding, especially negotiating and how thorough the inspections are! I remembered the radial bike, Finally a cool Plymouth! Way to many rivets! Looks like a guy from 1995 with both arms tattooed with tribal art!! 3000 rivets to many?
Jay I love this channel I love everything from the cars and trucks that are stock to the customs like this. But this one gave me an idea I think you should start giving these guys the Jay Leno Award of Excellence. Not only for the customs, but also for the Restorations. A nice little trophy from you to them. Just an idea. Jim.
Well built machine I love how the team put it all together and made it look like an air plane and to use a work TRUCK to boot. Keep the salvage yard going. I'm from the bay area of California where they built the battle ships we had one of the biggest salvage yards. Then they came out with regulations where they all had to shut down.
You gotta love the small details that just immediately pop out if you know what they are, like the inside supports for wings of a plane are put into the underside of the door for the trunk
It's probably just clear coated. That's basically a finishing coat you might have over a normal paint job but in this case there is no base paint job. I have seen a few raw steel cars done in the same way. The body itself just looks like polished steel to me. Really if they had done it in aluminum or stainless there would be nothing left of the original truck with this type of finish.
I heard from a motorhead friend that simply coating steel with clear would still allow it to oxidize. I've seen a stripped chopped rat rod VW bug and a bus at a show before, but didn't get a chance to ask the owner how he did it. I did, however, see a VW Caddy/Rabbit truck at the same show with a bare steel, rusted, but reinforced, engine bay that the guy just sprayed with thick oil constantly to keep it from rusting. I'm guessing these guys used some kind of sealer on this, though.
Fantastic project. Great execution. Friend of mine, Ed Moser, built circa 84 a street legal Indy Car. March body, handbuilt frame powered by 2 1000cc Kawasaki motorcycle motors. Chain drive with jackshaft. His follow up project was 32 Ford High Boy with carbon fiber frame with helicopter engine. Car now is in Lincoln Nebraska (or was in 2005) at Speedway Motors I believe it is. Huge mail order. Lost touch with Ed. Miss that guy.
My understanding of aircraft engines is that the RPM redline is only about 1500-2000. I would have liked to know the final drive ratio from the crank to the rear wheels. If I am correct it must be close to 1:1 or less to get any kind of speed up. Obviously, torque is more than sufficient. Also, This is the first time I have seen a piston aircraft engine run without a prop. I have always assumed that some kind of prop was needed to act as a flywheel. A very fascinating piece of engineering and first rate craftsmanship! Thanks for the closeup look.
Think about this that was only one bank of 7 heads , the WWII bombers had 4 of those making up 1 engine 2 per wing. A 28 cylinder radial engine, unbelievable power. unbelievable oil and fuel consumption. Jay did I miss you showing them your radial bike, and Aviation theme what about the Chrysler turbine car of yours?
What a work of CRAFTSMANSHIP !!! . Mechanical music . A guy at the GSL model contest in Salt Lake built a replica of this, and it got modelers choice award everybody voted for it just about ... Very nice thanks Jay 😎
I thought of that also but the bracing they have in there plus the belt drive are in the way I think. But would would add a cool sound when it was running too!
Scott Kenny, Gary seemed to want to correct Jay on the weed. It might have been imagined while on weed, But that pretty awesome engineering for alleged stoners.
@@warnerrobins8542 their life would be the exact same imho. A lazy person without ambition is just that with or without weed. I will agree that it can be abused as with anything but theres many many very successful people who use on the daily. What's your take on alchohol? Just curious because most people who arent too big on legalization and dont understand much about the substance as you called it drink alcohol at least on occasion which is a thousand times worse for your health and mental well being. Take 2 guys give one a big bag of bud and the other a 5th of vodka and tell me who you'd rather be around by the end of the night lol.
Awesome!!! I've followed this build a long time. I love it! It was funny how jay was confused about the V-drive, I feel like an expert after watching stubby bob Hahah. Also I totally jumped when that thing fired! Can't imagine how that guy on the ground felt!!!

Wow these is a amazing classic masterpiece remastered to that of an inpired from aircraft....especially the radial engine with 7 cylinders is an ultimate blast really, superb mastery engineering....I loved it the most, the body work with the many much rivets with that cool paint is one of the super kind....absolutely love this beast😱....it's really very loud as I was listening with headphones....really mind blowing Automobile 😍 and ofcourse the tug car is also too curiously cool tug....I enjoyed this video the most truely....it's very amazing video💖💚....Jay Leno's garage is significantly the one of the most coolest UA-cam channel by far because of the coolest Vehicles💙 & Automobiles 💜 that features in the videos....each and every Cars and Bikes featured here is by far one of the coolest, most amazing, variable range of superpowerful Automobiles 💜💙❤️🧡💛💖💚😍😘👍

I wonder if Gary calls both his sons "dummy" (hope everybody catches that reference). I've spent a lot of time at Colorado Auto ... always an amazing selection of parts both foreign and domestic. Back in the day, they always had some esoterica (fiat 850s, NSU Prinzes, Jags, MG roadsters, Triumphs, etc.). I can still hear Gary on the PA ... "Everybody out of the yard, the yard is now closed" _always followed by a whistle_
That truck is just insane, and I love it. Gary Corns is truly nuts, and we need more crazy people like that in the world! Does anyone know what that blue Benz thing was in the background? I've never seen anything quite like that.
..not sure he'd want to...what a butchered up mess...you can even still see the rough seams and welds where they "chopped the top"...hey, I'm not against building what you like, but I wish they hadn't shown a picture of the truck before they "built" it....made me sick..a very restorable solid, mostly complete original truck...now all hacked and cut up...we really need to use old bits and pieces and fabricate stuff to "build" stuff like this, not use complete original vehicles...I see this type of tragedy on those "reality TV" hot rod shows a lot...not enough survivors out there to keep doing this type thing...and it's all hacked to h@ll, not just some modifications that can be changed back...once everyone gets tired of playing with this "novelty item", it's just going to be a pile of junk sitting around....
I just love that little tug, how the heck was that thing as small as it was and weighing 3000 pounds, plus hauling stuff around on a 112CI flat-head four!?
Could you imagine a " La Beastioni" type vehicle with an engine from a WWII Bomber?! So cool what a little Marijuana can do with some talent! Build on Gary!
I know where a DC-7 has been sitting for around 30 years.Could make 4 cool car's.Double row , 18 cylinders! Between 2,200 to 3,700 hp depending on application.
those engines are huge. they used those on b-29 bombers. they weight probably ~3500lb. not to mention the fuel consumption. ~150-200gal an hour. would need much much bigger vehicle to put it in. cooling would also be much more critical on those. double rows of cylinders plus the turbochargers.
"my boys got it running" he probably taught them everything; what a cool dad
Blessed boys.

Jay: that's a lot of weed you're smoking to come up with that lol
It gets one city block/ gallon and can only run for 10-15 min before it overheats; Not exactly great engineering if you ask me.
That truck needs somebody that has a marina with an airfield and hangar at it...and then make sure there is a seaplane in the hangar with the truck!

Dang PatriotPaul5839, I knew Sherman's had the Radial but I did not know they had an aluminum FORD chopped V8.
This thing is so cool. Love the design of it. Just needs a water cooling setup so it can run longer
most radial engines are air cooled, I don't think you'd be able to setup some type of cooling system for each individual cylinder (unless you're some type of wizard).
Just put a prop on the front (or rear because I think this thing is mounted backwards)
It would also increase weight. This car clearly isn't about making anything practical.
I like how Jay keep saying, the more weed they smoke, the more they figured out. Ha, at least he knows weed doesn't make you brain dead.
Frigging awesome. A steampunk 39 pickup. Best truck I've ever saw
BOY!! Do I ever LOVE this channel.
That body style looks absolutely sick, it looks like Gene Simmons pick truck imo, the airplane themed exposed sheet metal and rivets looks so aggressive combined with the hot rod truck, amazing ❤️
This truck is a true badass , it have aspects from everywhere .
" Thats a compass, so you know where your going" 😆
Thank you Jay for sharing. Your curiosity in know ing antiques deserve a salute
❤️🇮🇳
Im a race car mechanic level 22 master. I build stuff like these all the time. It's pretty easy for someone with my skill level.
YO LENO! How about you show US that bike with a radial engine in the front wheel.
SHOW US MORE OF Y O U R vehicles and tell us the stories behind them.
I'm sure others agree.
Not that I don't like theese shows, they're great. But still, it's Jay Lenos garage.
He did show us the bike. Dig through the archives a bit.
I think he did a thing about that bike in one of the Pebble Beach episodes.
Jay's Megola has a ROTARY engine mounted in the wheel.. not a RADIAL
The real doktorbimmer True, but they are very similar in appearance. A radial wouldn't work for the Megola's application.
Jim.
Stubby Bob came to mind right away, I would put a prop like an air boat has with the shield, that would bring your temps down
Well built machine I love how the team put it all together and made it look like an air plane and to use a work TRUCK to boot. Keep the salvage yard going. I'm from the bay area of California where they built the battle ships we had one of the biggest salvage yards. Then they came out with regulations where they all had to shut down.
this is pure art ..steam punk designe at its best
You gotta love the small details that just immediately pop out if you know what they are, like the inside supports for wings of a plane are put into the underside of the door for the trunk
I was hoping they would talk about the finish. It looks like bare metal but it must be sealed somehow or it would rust. It looks really incredible.
Could it be stainless steel or aluminum?
+borderex 17 could be but it looks original to me
It's probably just clear coated.
@Joe It looks brushed though. I guess that is possible with paint. I sure love it though.
Oh, my God! This is the sickest thing I have ever seen!
That's close to the coolest damn thing I have ever seen.
Check out jays car with a tank engine. Its awesome. This car barely drives, basicly it doesn't. It could drive for only a few minutes.
" Ok, Orville and Willbur , pull over !!!."
Thanks Jay and all the guys who built this fantastic truck/plane.
Batteries are in parallel ,to make 12v, unless they are 6 v batteries.
I was thinking the same thing. We are electricians aren’t we. 35 years as an electrician and now a building inspector
What a work of CRAFTSMANSHIP !!! . Mechanical music . A guy at the GSL model contest in Salt Lake built a replica of this, and it got modelers choice award everybody voted for it just about ... Very nice thanks Jay 😎
Needs to put a small prop back on it to solve cooling issues.
I thought of that also but the bracing they have in there plus the belt drive are in the way I think. But would would add a cool sound when it was running too!
Yea but there was enough space in there to reengineer the belt drive and make it work
Maybe a custom blower pulley with a club prop? A bit like alternator fans?
Watercool it 😂
They could probably fit a small steel bladed car fan on from say a 80's chevy and help cool it a "tiny" bit.
If legalizing weed leads to crazy cars like this, I think legalizing is a good thing!
Scott Kenny, Gary seemed to want to correct Jay on the weed. It might have been imagined while on weed, But that pretty awesome engineering for alleged stoners.
@@warnerrobins8542 Gee. Do ya think? Lots of accomplished people indulge to some extent.
@@warnerrobins8542 lmfao gotta love reefer madness and anyone who actually believed that, well I actually feel sorry for them.
Notice he never denies outright that weed was a factor. A gallon per city block. 15 minutes run time. Smoke billowing out. Sounds practical to me.
Jay does the thing that drives me crazy, he doesn't look people in the eyes while he shakes their hand.
Wow that is so dang cool. Love it when she popped off. Thanks guys.. puff puff hahaha
Awesome!!! I've followed this build a long time. I love it! It was funny how jay was confused about the V-drive, I feel like an expert after watching stubby bob Hahah. Also I totally jumped when that thing fired! Can't imagine how that guy on the ground felt!!!
It took me a minute to understand that too. I like how they didn't edit it out. That's integrity.
I think the guy on the ground may want to check his pants!
WHAT???
Ten seconds in thumbs up for a radial powered ANYTHING, absolutely magic!
Dang I wish that was a longer episode or two part, lots of questions about the truck still, such a unique vehicle.
I don't mind ads, and I don't mind lag, but when the ad lags it's pretty irritating
www.GPcarAudio.com I got a (3 second) no -skip freaking advertisement!
install adblock already...
AND adblock plus.
You don´t mind ads or lags? Wtf is wrong with you?^^
www.GPcarAudio.com h r I don’t
I normally hate to see antique vehicles chopped up, but I'm a sucker for radials, so all is forgiven. An interesting and attractive vehicle. Well done.
Wow these is a amazing classic masterpiece remastered to that of an inpired from aircraft....especially the radial engine with 7 cylinders is an ultimate blast really, superb mastery engineering....I loved it the most, the body work with the many much rivets with that cool paint is one of the super kind....absolutely love this beast😱....it's really very loud as I was listening with headphones....really mind blowing Automobile 😍 and ofcourse the tug car is also too curiously cool tug....I enjoyed this video the most truely....it's very amazing video💖💚....Jay Leno's garage is significantly the one of the most coolest UA-cam channel by far because of the coolest Vehicles💙 & Automobiles 💜 that features in the videos....each and every Cars and Bikes featured here is by far one of the coolest, most amazing, variable range of superpowerful Automobiles 💜💙❤️🧡💛💖💚😍😘👍
stunning I got chills when it comes out of garage love the background music...💪

_The first 5-6seconds of that song is the exact same music I hear when I bang my head or hit my funny bone, while under a Dump Truck. 0.o_
_Same happens ever year I go climb around the U.S.S. North Carolina battleship._
The blue Benz is a race car hauler. He did a show on it not that long ago if you dig thru the videos.
Mark Zeis Thanks!
Finally...A car Jay can't drive! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
..not sure he'd want to...what a butchered up mess...you can even still see the rough seams and welds where they "chopped the top"...hey, I'm not against building what you like, but I wish they hadn't shown a picture of the truck before they "built" it....made me sick..a very restorable solid, mostly complete original truck...now all hacked and cut up...we really need to use old bits and pieces and fabricate stuff to "build" stuff like this, not use complete original vehicles...I see this type of tragedy on those "reality TV" hot rod shows a lot...not enough survivors out there to keep doing this type thing...and it's all hacked to h@ll, not just some modifications that can be changed back...once everyone gets tired of playing with this "novelty item", it's just going to be a pile of junk sitting around....
@@dyer2cycle It already was a pile of junk you puffed up pompous dork, the hells your problem?
@@rrai1999 ...what an @sshole...people can't express their opinions, apparently...that's all I've got to say about that...
dyer2cycle I agree!
Adam and Eric….helpers? Santa has helpers; these fellas are storm troopers from the music.
Love this comment- (Storm Trooper)ADAM-ERIC
In 30 years somebody will find this thing in the back of a barn.
I just love that little tug, how the heck was that thing as small as it was and weighing 3000 pounds, plus hauling stuff around on a 112CI flat-head four!?
I bet it really flies!
Where? :)
+Plymouth Air Radial Truck goodyear az airport.
those engines are huge. they used those on b-29 bombers. they weight probably ~3500lb. not to mention the fuel consumption. ~150-200gal an hour. would need much much bigger vehicle to put it in. cooling would also be much more critical on those. double rows of cylinders plus the turbochargers.
probably more than 3500lb.
murpy eddie Build it on the oldest semi you can find...dreams!
