    Try to get the windshield to be at least 50F because the wax gets difficult to remove if the surface is cold. In the winter, use the reflective covers that you put on your dash to protect it. It will add heat. Also, you can move your car in the sun to heat the surface up, then move it into the shade to wax.

      Windex works but either the 4-ought steel wool or a one sided rasor blade works best, much better than liquid cleaners alone.
      I have not tried your wax idea but have very serious concerns about night driving and the reflections from street and headlights. I have tried Rainex and it caused extreme wiperblade bounce and skipping. One new tip, if on road and windshield becomes very dirty try Coke or Pepsi poured slowley over the windshield with blades on slow it will instantly clean it. Warning it will make a mess of the car and will need washing but the safety will be worth the price of a $5.00 car wash....Good Driving

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  10 років тому +4

      The wax actually reflects light outward and is pretty good at night and in the sunlight. I wouldnt pour soda on the car because the soda is caustic to paint and will damage it. If you want to clean your windshield while you are on the road, use washer fluid. If you have wax on the windshield, just hit the windshield with plain water.

    Chris is just like me. Young and modivated. We may be the same age lol but anyways, I don’t like stealerships and rip-off shops so I try to fix my own car. Got a 1997 Toyota Camry LE as first car. Passed driving test with it. Just did a oil change and air filter replacement, New front brake pads and calipers, New radiator, New spark plugs, New front end and power steering fluid, New brake lines and brake fluid, New battery and alternator, New catalytic converter and exhaust system and O2 sensors. No this car is not a money pit but these were all original parts to the car minus the battery and tires. Next up will be a transmission service and rear drum brakes/hardware along with bulb replacements in dash/accessory lights. 200,000 miles and onward. I have a family mechanic that helps me if I get stuck. Car was purchased at around 140,000 miles. Chris thanks for the videos man. I hope I can meet up with you someday.

    I was going 60-65mph on the highway. I dont have a problem with wiper-float... The wax creates a smooth surface but doesnt cause the wipers to skip or float. I have been doing this for a while on multiple cars including my Vette and it works great. One day when you wax your car, give it a try. If it doesnt work, just clean it off with dawn soap. I think you will like it!

    yea, below that temp, it is really hard to wipe off. The only difference for the painter's rule is it doesnt matter the humidity for when you wax lol. I have done this in the rain.

  • @chrisfix
    @chrisfix  10 років тому +6

    +221Dw I cannot reply to your comment for some reason, but wax doesnt really "go white", if you leave it on the car without wiping it off, it gets hard/dry and turns a white color. If you wax your car properly, it wont get white, it will protect your finish.

  • @chrisfix
    @chrisfix  10 років тому +1

    On glass it doesnt matter. On paint, applying in a circular motion is fine, its taking it off that you should go straight. That is a good point. Thanks for the tip!

  • @WrongFromWright
    @WrongFromWright 9 років тому +5

    Ammonia based window cleaner can dull out window tints if you have them. Also, make use of old newspaper; crumple up a piece or two and "scrub" your windows, its the best thing to get dirt and bugs off your windshield next to clay barring. Adding one more layer of wax can actually help water to "sheet" off windows/windshields.

    Have used this basic strategy myself however........I have not been as diligent in cleaning it first. When I have used the ammonia based cleaner, I have not rinsed it with clear water and then dried it. My step went from windshield cleaner directly to the wax. Another step you enforce is the use of a microfiber cloth. I agree but have never done it. Thanks for the instruction and my diligence will be stepped up a notch.

    For many years- when I am using my random orbital buffer- I always use it to *apply* the wax/polish, then also to *remove* it- waxing/polishing the windows at the same time. You must mask off the rubber seals and weatherstripping beforehand, and I always use a microfiber towel to apply Maguires Tire Gel (grape scented) on all rubber, trim, tires, and dashboard. It has additives to protect from UV rays, and moisturizes the surfaces too. If put on with several coats, allowed to soak in overnight, it will restore a seriously faded dashboard. Then thouroghly wipe of the access with absorbent paper towels. Pleasing grape candy scent for the interior!

    The reason why people are disliking this video is because this isn't the "known" way to clean a windscreen. This is his way of cleaning his windscreens. The "known" way is to use a razor blade, a clay bar, and use a series of different microfiber clothes. Paper towels aren't the best to use, but the wax is a cool idea. It makes sense, and thanks for sharing, I would like to try this now.

    I also tried silicone wax, and it worked no better than carnuba wax. Rain-X works so well I have sold 3 vehicles that had unused factory wipers on them. My current pickup is 5 years old, and I've never used the wipers. In heavy rainstorms I pass people pulled over because they can't see, and my wipers are not even running. Night driving is even better than daytime driving with Rain-X

      I know the vinegar trick also. Microfiber, as I am sure you already figured out, will get those streaks easily. I just use a can of invisible glass with microfiber. But I don't use my more expensive microfibers on the glass. That's for the detailer on the body. Use Neverdull on chrome. I've found some detailers work better on darker colors and vice versa. Just stay away from that other shit that's made specifically for black vehicles. I tried that on my wife's black VW CC and my arm was about to fall off after doing one door and it didn't even look that great. Of course I had to finish the rest of the vehicle with that bs so everything would match, but never again.

    • @nambinhvu
      @nambinhvu 10 років тому +3

      ChrisFix I was kind of worried for your windshield wipers when all that windex streamed down onto them. :P Also, the frame around the windshield is usually like a plastic or rubber, and the area below the windshield is usually plastic, which can be damaged (discolored) by the cleaner, but meh, I also used windex and newspapers to dry it up for a streak free shine, but I found what worked really well was just water and an auto sponge, it's more work, but in the end it's clean enough to eat off of. Scrub it from the top down, get more fresh water, and repeat until no more dirt. Warm water works best, just don't do it if it's freezing temperatures out, or you could create cracks from the extreme temperature changes. If you'd like, you could even add a little liquid dish soap, but I find that's unnecessary unless your windshield has lots of grease or something, but warm water tends to be good enough.
      The 0000 steel wool is really nice too, gets out any dry gunk, great for removing bird crap, pollen, dust, etc.
      There are a billion ways to do the same thing, but whatever works for you, I just found those things worked for me, and are easier/cheaper to get a hold of. Just some alternatives. :)
      I think one of the big problems with Rain X is application, I used it wrong before and it sucked. lol People always talk about using lint free cloths and stuff, but I found applying Rain X even with a paper towel worked fine. You waste less of the stuff because more of what goes into the paper goes onto the glass, with a towel, it just absorbs it all. Lint is no problem, it gets wiped off with the damp cloth in the final step.

      +nambinhvu -- Your comment is four years old as of this writing. Today is August 26th, 2018.
      I just got some rain-x after not using it for years. I was looking for it in the old familiar 'flat' squeeze bottle with the little 1/2" flip-up spout, like the ones on older multi-purpose oil and mineral oil bottles. All I could find were the spray bottles, and after a little grumbling about this modern world's rampant change just for the sake of change, I realized that the spray bottle really is a better option in terms of economical product use. This packaging change was probably due to many similar consumer complaints about wastefulness. As you note, in years past I always hated essentially wasting roughly 70% of the rain-x I was using, as it stayed in the partially saturated applicator of choice, never making it to the glass. I never retro-fitted a bottle or transferred the rain-x to a small sprayer.
      That said, as much as I dig ChrisFix's videos overall, he swung for the fence but landed in the outfield with this one. Read on for my reasoning.
      I had gone out just prior to buying this current bottle of rain-x and purchased a tub of MOTHERS California Gold Carnauba Wax for $10. I'd watched this video quite a while ago, and I based the purchase of the wax on my faulty memory. Prior to buying the carnauba I'd bought a tin of NuFinish, about a month ago, on the presumption that its fine-polymer formulation would be at least as good as rain-x, and maybe better than the carnauba that Chris touts.
      Well, I'd forgotten that I made the mistake a couple of years back of using NuFinish as what I thought would be an 'even better' rain-x substitute after seeing this video. NuFinish is probably a great product for use as a car finish protectant, but it yielded lackluster results when compared to rain-x on the windshield. In fact, my heart sank just a bit when I watched this video again, as Chris's results with the carnauba look *IDENTICAL* to those I got this most recent time using NuFinish: big beads that cling at lower speeds, fine-droplet occlusion that doesn't move readily, and a noticeable 'wax spot' around the impact area of a larger or wind-combined droplet in the midst of the 'fine-droplet' array. This demonstration remarkably mirrored the inferior results I experienced with NuFinish. Simply stated, rain-x produces smaller beads with less adhesion and visibility impairment that disperse much more quickly and evenly. For that reason I returned my unopened MOTHERS Carnauba and got rain-x after all this time away from it.
      No matter how compelling an argument or 'evidence' may be, subjective opinion will determine individual evaluation most of the time, so regard any critical responses to my assessment with that in mind. ; ] Read: I'm right, they're wrong. Ha!
      Chris gets a 'thumbs up for innovation', but as I've occasionally seen with my own tinkering, 'innovations' sometimes don't really deliver improvements. Ha! Honestly, when comparing the outcome of carnauba application to that of using NuFinish, the marginal performance of one is literally indistinguishable from that of the other. These are tied 'honorable mention' contenders that don't beat rain-x in any truly objective impact/effort analysis. The carnauba wax application was immediately identifiable as 'okay', but 'without argument' -- in my view -- to the impartial observer it's a 'clear' runner-up to rain-x and its dedicated formula. Accordingly, my first-hand results from using NuFinish as a rain-x alternative are similar and equally second-rate. Again, any presumed differences between carnauba wax and NuFinish used as a water-repellent windshield treatment are imperceptible or, at best, negligible. Both items ultimately prove to be substandard performers as ersatz stand-ins for rain-x.
      As much of a cynic as I am, not all claims of superior product performance are mere advertising hype. This is one example. I think rain-x has been around since I was in second grade, and I turned 54 two days ago. This shit's still active in the market because it ain't shitty -- it's 'the shit'. ; ]
      The makers of rain-x have fueled the gravy train with 'revolutionary' rain-x-enhanced windshield washer formulations which may be the products of spin and bullshit science, but that's a different matter. Original rain-x is great, and I say that as one who's never used its New Kid In Town competitors such as Aquapel, which I believe to be substantially more expensive for whatever degree of performance superiority its proponents deem it to provide.
      Excellent video, as I always expect from ChrisFix, but I firmly believe that any truly objective comparison will reveal rain-x to reign supreme in contest with any products that were conceived as finish protectants rather than glass treatments.
      There you have my 'two cents', which always seem to require a lot of words to express. ; ]

    Maybe the wax lasts longer, but personally, when I compare my windows to yours, Rain X seems to bead better. I watched this other guy's video on how to super clean your windows, he just uses 0000 steel wool, I tried it and it worked great. Only, I had a bunch of steel wool lint everywhere, so I had to use a cloth to get that off before doing the rainx, but I found his method of applying it twice, then wiping up the haze with a damp cloth worked great. When I drive in the rain the water flies off, light mist is still annoying though. lol I prefer to not use my windshield wipers at all, because it just wears off the stuff.

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  10 років тому

      Thanks for the tips/comment. I dont like the steel wool idea because it puts mico-abrasions in the glass. Yea, mist is the worse lol

    • @nambinhvu
      @nambinhvu 10 років тому

      ChrisFix Steel wool shouldn't be able to scratch the glass, I've worked the glass hard with the steel wool and it is super smooth, no scratches, but it's possible that some quartz particles and stuff from the dust/dirt that got kicked up could be on the glass, so when you wipe it up, it could cause scratching, which is why you shouldn't use dry cloths or anything to wipe unless it's already super clean.
      With the Rain X, the water beads up and flies off even around speeds of 35-40 mph, or at least it did on my windshield when driving around in the city.

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  10 років тому

      Steel is harder than glass therefore it can scratch it. Whatever is the hardest material will scratch the softer material. But the whole point is everyone has their own methods. I cant say steel wool is bad. Maybe the scratches are so fine you cant see them and it is worth the cleaning that it does.

    • @nambinhvu
      @nambinhvu 10 років тому

      ChrisFix Hmm this is strange, different sources come up with different numbers. Steel is lower on the MOHS scale of hardness than auto windshields. Windshield glass is about a 6-6.5 on the mohs scale of hardness, the glass on the side windows is even higher, which is why it's safe to take a razor blade to it to scrape stuff off. Steel is rated at 4-4.5, some say 5-5.5, but even then it's still safe, though stainless steel and hardened steel are a different story. I've scrubbed my windows, and didn't see any scratches, it just got all the gunk off, I guess it's good to play it safe, though I have yet to hear anyone scratch their windshields with the stuff.
      Just do a quick google 0000 steel wool glass, a lot of people talk about how effective it is to clean windows and such without scratching the windows, though I just saw someone say rusty pads can scratch the glass.

    I dont know if the type of wax or brand name make a difference but DO NOT wax your windscreen.
    I watched this video and waxed my windscreen, twice.
    No doubt it worked. I drove down the highway on a tropical downpour and I didnt need to use the wiper at all!
    Two weeks into the second waxing I realised my wipers started shuddering and becoming noisy.
    Than a night drive and it started raining. I couldnt see a thing each time I used the wiper.
    Long story short, once the top layer of the wax wears off, you are left with a dried hard glue like substance beneath it.
    Good luck cleaning that. I have used everything from steel wool, to amonia based window cleaners, to nail polish remover.
    Only thing that works is a powder called force steel, used to polish stainless steel, and a knife blade.
    My brand new Honda HRV now has some scratches on the driver side screen, and I have yet to completely remove the hard gunk resulting from waxing my windscreen.
    Be warned, waxing your windscreen will screw up it up.

    stay away from amonia. use stonners or armorall all window. use micro fiber not paper. you will micro scratch your window. clean, clay, the clay will clean it better, wax is fine but degrades qicker than a bonding sealer such as aquapel or rain clear or rain x

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  10 років тому +1

      Amonia is fine as long as there is no wax on it. A paper towel wont scratch a window. Glass is way harder than paper (the only way to scratch something is to have something that is nearly as hard or harder). You get scratches when you rub dirt into the glass with any towel. I want to try the clay next time, thanks!

Sure rainx might have some good products, but it will cost. Most people use wax and when they clean/wax their car, this is an easy step to do. I am sure the rainx stuff doesnt last 2 years either. They put a warning on some waxes because if you let it dry and dont clean it off, it will obscure your vision.
