Family-sized electric cars are (quite literally) big business at the moment. Tesla’s Model Y is on course to be the world’s most popular car while Ford’s Mustang Mach-E has proved so enticing that customers are facing huge waiting lists - despite a recent and significant price increase.
But which should you choose? Should you follow the crowd and join the millions of car buyers around the world who have opted for the Tesla Model Y. The Model 3’s bigger sibling, it combines all the usual Tesla features (good and bad) with what is still the best recharging network available. Or do you opt for the Mustang Mach-E? With a similar range, a higher quality feel and similar levels of practicality, is the Ford a better package?
Join Ginny and Tom as they compare the two and deliver their verdicts. Which would you choose? Let us know in the comments below.

I chose the Mach-E because I wanted all of these things, none of which the Model Y has: Rear cross-traffic alerts, radar-based ADAS, dedicated buttons on the steering wheel, quiet cabin, comfortable ride quality, high build quality, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM radio, a guage cluster, and a 360 top down camera (which automatically comes up in reverse and when getting close to anything at low speeds in the front)

Interesting review, my thoughts after 4 days with my model y:
    -Looks are subjective
-If you don't like the hub caps on the gemini.. Take them off...
-MCU of the tesla is miles apart. Ps5 performance and way better UI and UX
    - build quality is fine (just got mine 4 days) and just sat in a mustang mach e today whilst the owner parked next to mine
    - latest model y suspension is way softer for those just delivered (one I was fearful of)
    - new model y comes with a parcel shelf in the boot for better privacy
    They didn't really mention:
    - pano roof makes it so airy
    - turning circle of the Y is rather large
    - sentry mode on the Y
    - regular updates to software on teslas
    - tesla phone app is pretty astounding
    - as a dog owner, dog mode is awesome
    - back seat space is huge on the y esp for leg room

Yep, it seems clear that 99.9% of the people who care about the little build quality issues that happen on some Teslas are car reviewers. And you have not tried camper mode yet, I assume, and while you can readily put the rear seats down and sleep in the back of the Y, the four inch drop off in the Mach-e would make that extremely challenging.

The Model Y they've got would appear to be one of the early UK ones - I tried a similar age demo back in February. I picked up my new one at the start of September - it does seem to be a more refined car and I can't fault build quality and ride is not an issue. I picked up my Model Y from Birmingham last week. The panel alignments and paintwork are immaculate and there are no marks or rattles inside. The ride's a bit firm, but I probably wouldn't have noticed it if the reviews hadn't been beefing about it for the past year. There's a bit of a rumble at speed, but I've not found it bothersome so far. The one-pedal driving's a revelation and much better than having to brake, find a suitable gear, etc.
The only thing I don't like at the moment is that the car occasionally and randomly gets the idea it's being driven off the side of the road and sounds a loud, panicky alarm. This is definitely annoying and there doesn't seem to be any way to turn the feature off. 😠

I'm in the US and had a few build issues on my 22 MYP but they were fixed very easily and quickly once they got the part that was needed. The car has been super reliable and ZERO out of pocket cost and maintenance on the first 10k miles of ownership "knock on wood". Even on 21" rims ride seems suitable for a performance car. My 2022 cars feels a lot more premium and quiet compared to 20-21 models I test drove. I had a 2015 MB c300 with air suspension and the Y seems marginally stiffer. Mach E looks like a great car. For me it's all about the charging network and software advantage Tesla has. As more EVs are on the market the charging network will be more crucial and busy on road trips, especially on holidays weekends. Tesla is doing a better job at keeping up, and you always have the option to use 3rd party chargers. The software, even without carplay, is a lot more refine imo.

The fact that the car monitors all its own systems and Converses with the super computer and it decides whether or not to send you a message about something starting to go bad that you may have to bring it in to get fixed. Now then, take her on the mainland of Europe and wow; what a smooth drive on their excellent first world roads; even the country lanes are billiard table smooth. The downside side of that is the locals drive like they are on a one way race track. Fortunately, their hedge edges are also well maintained so no clear coat damage.
As already mentioned, the superb charging network combined with the Y's range provides great peace mind. Finally, is she an inflated ugly M3? Noooo! How very dare you! I know you did mention it briefly it but of course you get the full Tesla SC network. Makes a huge difference, a couple weeks ago i was out up the A1, theres a MSA there with maybe 16 Tesla SC's but just 2 Gridserve chargers (running at 50kW as well !) and they were both occupied (I was there twice over the weekend). I am also shocked at the high price of the Mustang. I was expecting it to be £45k or so. Who on earth would go for 80 miles less range no SC network less room more money.

Being an American and being 65 years old I have watched the mustang throughout its entire life. And written in many. Ford has always had a problem with not so great looking interior and seats that just don't look good all throughout history. Compared to GM and Camaro the interior and the seats in their products far outshined ford. I myself drive a Ford F-150 and it has big comfortable seats unlike what the mustang ever had. But the main reason I don't care for the new electric mustang is that it has four doors! They should have took the pony off of it and called it something else. Sports cars do not have four doors. The model 3 has never been labeled a sports car or the model y. And there's always a lingering question of the equipment under the hood which Sandy Monroe has always pointed out more Tesla's cooling systems and such are way less complicated and have a smaller volume, and Ford's high performance mustang EV right out of the gates had problems with its shutting down into low power mode after 5 seconds of high performance, and for strange reasons Ford has never said anything else about this. They leave the public wondering if forever fixed that problem and it can do high performance as long as the owner wants it to, or if it is still a nagging problem that they can't figure out how to fix. Tesla is open with everything as far as what is going on with its products. But legacy auto, is known to deceive, cover up, and flat out lie about their products systems and specs. I will trust and honest company everyday before I will trust a deceitful line company who is always tried everything they could to make their cars to where you have to bring them in to be worked on because everything is so complicated and hard to get to on purpose. I bought my Ford pickup used and it has been good which Ford pickups have always been good but my next vehicle will be Electric with my Ford finally wears out. Right now I have $248,000 MI and still running good so I'm sure it will be two or three years before I need something even though my pickup is a 2003 model. Nothing against sports gasoline reliability, but electric is the future, simpler, or reliable, cleaner, and more powerful. 🇺🇲🇺🇲

Might be with Tesla that works, but had an EQE for a week with air suspension and have to say that the mechanical adaptive dampers from ZF Sachs used at the moment by Mercedes AMG, Maserati and of course on my EV6 AWD Kia are quite equal on the same heavy road. Teslas are remarkable less comfortable and same the Mach-e I could also test. Comparing objectively from making quality, charge performance, handling on a track and mountain roads, noise, recuperation, consumption, warranty of 7 years, 800 Volts-System such as Rimac-Bugatti and Porsche Taycan. Do not care if 3 or 5 seconds to 100 km/h in a straight line but like curvy roads and pricise steering. Only the Kia was fine-tuned by Albert Biermann who headed BMW M Sports, which stand for the ultimate driving machines never matched by Ford itself.

There is a world of difference between the two and you did a pretty good job pointing them out. I own a Model Y Long Range and my build quality from Austin TX was flawless. I will say that the Mach E at certain times is a better looking vehicle than the Y but then there are times I look at my Y and think it is freaking awesome. I've tinted out the front windows and ditched the aero covers and got after market ones that look similar to the uber turbine caps. The Mach E is still a very nice looking EV but for the price you can get a Y with more interior space, a bigger frunk and more range and cheaper than the Mach E .....plus you don't have to pay the dealer mark up. Also, the Y has a better infotainment than the Mach E....With access to a full browser, Netflix, Hulu, Disney +, UA-cam and more. Plus it has games and a way better over the air update support system.
And these long lead times for charging at home etc. they're talking about must be 0% to 100% because on a typical night simply recharging what I've used in my day we're talking about a 3 to 5 hours charge while I sleep. And from about 20 or 30% to 80% at a V3 (250kw) super charger takes me less than 30 minutes...but only need to use those when I take the occasional road trip
I get what he said about being able to just hit a button when you need something. In my gas car there are buttons there I've never used. They just collect dust. In my Y this isn't an issue. Even though it has just two buttons per se, you can accomplish what you need by hitting one of those buttons and using voice commands. SO I don't miss the buttons at all.
We'll leave the charging network out of this for now since Tesla may be opening up to everyone soon.

I prefer the Mach-E premium over the Y. The Y just seems like a cheap low budget car on the inside compared to the Mach-E. The Y's frunk hood feels so cheap and you have to be very careful shutting it or it can be damaged. Getting out of the Y's drivers seat is also harder because the distance from the seat edge to the car edge is so large. I'm shorter so have to pivot almost 90 degrees so my knee is out enough for my foot to touch the ground which is one of the biggest reasons I prefer the Mach-E. The Mach-E is quieter on the road and freeway as well. The Y had a lot of noise in my left ear (wind, road, and inverter) when on the freeway. The Mach-E also seems to ride better.

The main innovations that traditional car companies have refined and perfected over the years and have used as a moat to prevent new entrants relate to ICE technology, manufacturing and supply chain. ICE doesn't matter for EVs, manufacturing and supply chain for EV parts again are different and Tesla is obviously improving every quarter on those fronts too. Tesla's net profits per car is almost 9x Toyota's - think about that and why that could be and you'll understand how fish out of water the traditional car companies are in this new game. In EV land, what does matter a lot is batteries and the traditional car companies are the ones playing catch up - 140 miles in 40mins charge time vs 185 miles in 30mins. Other metrics are important too, but there isn't a meaningful metric when it comes to batteries that Tesla isn't way better at. The car companies will muddle through because the 50 year old+ demographic will prefer what they're used to. But that market is quite literally dying every day.

That's one of the few advantages the MachE has over Tesla in the states... only other things might be 360o birds-eye top down camera view for parking (Tesla has lots of autopilot driving cameras, but not for parking), and AM radio & Sirius XM (Tesla has FM, Slacker,Spotify,TuneIn,Tidal?, and.. Car-aoke :) .)
Ford also has Android Auto and Apple Carplay, if you prefer those..
Everything else, besides if you like some physical buttons, the Tesla should do better.
Especially, the infotainment UI , maps/nav and app... MUCH better. I am still trying to help my parents understand all the features and complicated menus and settings and overlapping windows on their MachE Ford Sync UI...
too complicated, too many settings, voice control is slow, map isn't very detailed, ?no satellite view option ($10/mo for Tesla)... it's just slower and harder and more confusing to work with.
Tesla has a MUCH sleeker and faster UI and voice controls, bigger more detailed always-on map, always-visible (and customizable) apptray icons to instantly launch preferred music/controls, etc.. just works much better and more intuitively. They could do better labelling (and having more) buttons, though...
Tesla standard AutoPilot seems significantly better and more consistently usable everywhere, as well... Ford BlueCruise does decently well, but tends to "give up" at random spots (turn is bit too sharp, road lines confusing, maybe unmapped area... and just gives up w/ no audible warning!)

We've been using screens for a long time and now they are the trend in car consoles. That doesn't make them "new school" anymore than power windows are. They're just becoming ubiquitous. If you need to be focused and not distracted, studies show that screens aren't the answer. So do what works and not what is trendy. Get back to the purpose of driving.

I hear reviewers complaining about charging speeds, and I think about when I had my Chevy Volt struggling to put on 50 miles of range after 8 hours of charging 😂

Thanks for another well presented video. I agree with you in that the Ford looks great but electric cars are all about technology and so the Tesla wins. I want faster charging, more range and the supercharger network which seals the deal for me.

@@nickmartin8495 Trust me, you don't want Apple CarPlay. You won't be able to use certain functions on your iphone while your car is linked through Apple Carplay. Besides, Model Y has the apple music now anyways. But yes, the car does look like an egg haha.

@@malikkhana1567 I haven’t had a single issue with Apple Car Play on the Mach E. And just knowing I don’t associate with anything remotely related to right wing extremist Musk gives me a warm fuzzy feeling all over. Every time I see a Tesla I feel pity for the occupant(s).

It boils down to function and efficiency. Body is designed for low coefficient. Functionally is impressive. Everything else looks like an ICE car with a motor.

Thanks for this. Love your reviews! One consideration for US viewers, though. Not sure if this is still the case, but when the MACH-E was released, I believe Ford was still eligible for the $7K EV instant rebate, and Tesla has exhausted it.

Maybe different in other markets, but uk prices for ford Mach e were always too high (explains why they’re not selling as well as they should) and now with a price increase they’re not even worth considering unfortunately. Model y is also a little too expensive here and Tesla took so long to sell it in uk, the market has moved on. Tesla is still worth considering however due to it being basically fully loaded by default, and access to their charging system but I can’t get my head around their refusal to add a heads up display. Their cars need it more than others and they’re just being pig headed about it now. I’d be happy with either but I wouldn’t pay the price ford is asking and to b honest, I’d pick something from Hyundai/Kia/genesis or q4 etron at these prices.

Lots of people super convinced the Y needs a heads up display, but it is likely to be the fastest selling car in the world next year, so maybe that is not really a problem? Would you feel compelled to make a significant change to a car that popular?

Agreed re HUD. I have a 2011 Leaf with a lovely super high up digital speedo, almost like a HUD. Have driven both the 3 and Y, and like the otherwise excellent Nissan Ariya with its centre console mounted touch button drive mode selectors, having to glance to the side takes your eyes off the road.
But all, along with the Polestar 2 etc are superb vehicles and destined to take over from the old players.

I would not choose either, but in a forced choice the Ford for me. I could not live with the bloated ugly Tesla. I do not like too many controls on the touch screen.
I have instead bought an EV6, which in my obviously biased opinion knocks the socks off both the Ford and the Tesla. 300 mile range, head up display, ventilated seats, sub 5 secs to 60, much faster charging, V2L, 20 inch wheels, sun roof etc. I paid £52K.However now a seriously long delivery time.
Yes I did test drive a model 3, but not the Mach E.

Space with the rear seats down matters to me (surfboard and other stuff on drive holidays). EV6 seems great except it is not really a utility vehicle.

Mach E is a nice attempt, but if you’re considering any Ford *PLEASE* look into the safety record pouch battery cells when using Nickel-based cathodes. It’s a matter of time before all car makers switch to cylindrical battery cells like Tesla. LFP cell chemistry does just fine with Prismatic / Pouch cells… Ford will eventually switch to LFP too.
