  • To Kill a Dead Man is a short film made in 1994 by the trip hop group Portishead.
The theme can be found on both the 1995 compilation album Glory Times and the 1994 CD single "Sour Times". The music video for "Sour Times" also uses footage from the film.
A still from the film is featured on the cover of their album Dummy and several other stills appear in the CD booklet. A miniature image of the poster for the film is visible in the upper left corner at the back of this album.

I found a summary of the plot on the internet. Essentially, the guy who got shot hired the assassin to fake his own death in order to drive his wife insane. That's why you see her in a straight jacket (the cover of Dummy) and in the hospital replaying his "death" in her mind. After her recovery, however, she then hires the same assassin to kill her husband and get her revenge. At the end the husband realizes he let the man who is going to kill him into his car, and his wife gets the last laugh.

She isn't wearing a straitjacket though on the cover of Dunny... She's wearing the same outfit in the beginning scene when she exits the building. Looks like some sort of traditional Chinese dress.

Sour Times was used as a musical motif in the 1998 film Killing Time, which was about how a covert female assassin spends her day leading up to the killing she’s been hired to commit.
That’s about as close as we’ll get unfortunately.

Same reason they didn't choose Radiohead's "Spectre" song, the public reason being it was "too dark", but the proper reason being it's not conventional enough to their eyes and therefore not streamable.

This is kinda like a hidden underground cult short film, something like that. A quite strange and special piece of art. I found it when a I saw "Long Hello and Short Goodbye". I've been listening to Portishead since at least 20 years ago or even more. Now is 2022 and I still love it.

This album really hit everyone like a cupid's arrow from nowhere -so fresh and refreshing while also a throwback.

Its worth watching To Kill A Dead Man, Portishead's own film noir from 1994 ( I think). A still frame from that short film was used as the cover for Dummy and the film acts as a long, noir-soaked music video.

the tribute to rhythm symphony orchestra music became a musical type of which just the portishead have the culture to appear. micalizzi, moricone and bacalov and the rest invented a type of music that alone represents the present. also mr armstrong tried to score some music of this kind. i think it is worthy to blend orchestra sort of chords, vibratos, pizzicatos, pianissmo with mean guitar. they are the best.
