This video is two years old and was the very frst video essay I ever made. Coming back to it, I think the direction i had was pretty good however, I think I severely lack emotion during the reading of the script 😂
Thank you to anyone clicking this video even now, I appreciate you taking your time to watch this and support a young guy who just wanted to make a video about a manga that emotional impacted him ❤

Yo, just wanted to point out something about Rikishi's weight loss. Rikishi was stated to have not been a natural featherweight. Nah, he's a natural welterweight who went down to featherweight in order to have a better chance of succeeding in boxing. That honestly makes his bantamweight weight loss every more wild

Ashita no joe made me feel so many latent emotions while reading and watching it. The journey of a kid that had no ambition whatsoever when the story commenced, gradualy turned into a narrative where he formed an fervent passion for a sport that offers so much profundity and is so multifarious in itself that it left him awestruck. But the best part was that Joe finally found a place that he could call home. No matter how bleak and sinister his state was, he was always clinging to his intrinsic happiness that he discovered for himself, by fighting opponents that taught him not only what kind of boxers he could encounter but also that every being has a reason for being alive, that's what makes Joe the goat, that's what it means to fight for your own tomorrow.

To call Ashita No Joe the best sports manga is an understatement. It's probably the best sports story ever written. Rarely does a sports story dive into the meaning of life and death, and Ashita No Joe pulls it off beautifully with an ending that is simply perfect. The last panel iconic.

I started watching Ashita no Joe since boxing is my favourite thing in the whole world, not just favourite sport but favourite thing of all time, and something that's really important to me
But in reality Ashita no Joe never was only about boxing, but about life, dreams, hopes and future. The most relatable peace of media I ever consumed, one that changed my life even..

Its been discussed if Joe actually died there or not. I was just reading about it. This anime was made by 2 people 1 of the creators (before he died) confirmed that Joe passes on. The other creator says that Joe’s lives! Its a pretty interesting read. Apparently Joe’s fate as been up in the air for decades

    • @bingebois
      @bingebois  Рік тому +16

I think symbolically for the story they are telling Joe "died" that night. Whether it be his fighting spirit or his entire life, the whole candle symbolism meant he was burnt out. I could see an argument that it was his fighting spirit because he fought the world champion and nearly knocked him out, basically accomplishing everything Rikishi wanted to do and having something to live for now with Yoko confessing to him. However I think going with the way Joe was acting, I that final arc I think he died. He never felt comfortable with the fame he got or the actual family he created with coach the slum kids and Yoko so was willing to die for boxing. Its cool to theorize tho!

I consider this to be my favorite sports anime ever, even though i hold beyblade in high regard as well since it is a sport too, Joe takes the cake for me for it truly symbolized a broken kid growing into a man that had to fight the world that only wanted to help him do good in return. I relate to joe since ive done alot of bad things in my past i cant forgive myself for and handled them in the most wrong ways possible, thats how i see joe as well, im in his shoes for the entire series no matter what struggles or hardships come around, sure he and i want to come to respect others and try to accept them, yet have difficult times doing so because of what we've been through in our lives, overall i love Joe's character progression in the series and makes it all the more worth it in the end since his soul was truly put to rest when he proved himself to the world that he made his efforts to change as both a person and a boxer even if it wasnt enough for him to win, everyone still respected the journey he went through to the end of it all, even though i still have a long way to go myself, i will always resort to Joe as my inspiration to change as a person truly.

The way that readers can relate to Joe in this series is amazing. While being the main character, he isn't a super hero and nor does he pretend to be. Its very heartwarming to see a character that is so human and watch him grow even if his story doesn't have the cherry-on-top ending because its so much like real life!

I'm glad you took the trouble to dedicate a video to a buried gem like Ashita no Joe, it certainly deserves the title of "best sports manga / anime of all".
As for some tips for your video, I would tell you not to bother telling the plot, because I felt that it took time that could have been used to develop the theme of the consequences of the series and how they affected each character. But in spite of everything, it was a good video overall.

Humanity, guilty and passion, that's what lead Joe to his end.
I haven't watched Ashita no Joe yet (only Hajime no Ippo), but this is what I have figured out.
Joe's ultimate end reminds me alot of Makoto Yuki (Persona 3 protagonist), both knew exactly what would happen if they proceed with their decisions, both of them knew that death awaited them, but even so, both of them went forth and faced death itself, and in that very moment both of them found the meaning of their lives...
One could forgive himself by his past mistakes doing what he loved the most, finding in the end peace and satisfaction.
The other gave back the future from humanity and his friends by fighting against certain end, receiving in the end, like Joe, deserved rest.

AnJ is a great sports anime is because it isn't mainly about sports. It's about Joe and his life. It's about the personal drama he has with his opponents and the people closest to him. The fights in the Joe are fights that have a ton of context and backstory behind them. They're the culmination of the personal connections he's built with however he's about to fight. The only other media which I can make a 100% comparison to AnJ are the Rocky movies and Raging Bull

Joe is my pick as the best boxing manga. The main character is a much better written than ippo. Joe just coming from prison had more character development than ippo throughout his more than 30 year run.
The manga also didn't showed racial bias unlike ippo. Which had distaste towards african american fighters while overhyping mexicans.
Joe dwell with weight problems, mental traumas and career ending injuries. Actual realistic problems of a boxer. Ippo didn't. They tried with the brain damage plot but it seems mori got a cold feet. Takamura didn't suffer major repercussions from.his weight cut like Joe and other main characters.
Rikiishi is a much better rival than miyata. Rikiishi forced joe to better himself inside and outside the ring. Rikiishi was there to cheer joe, his rival when all hopes are almost lost against wolf kanagushi. Even if it means that rikiishi had to painstakingly make weight just to make the fight.
Miyata's struggle doesn't compare to that.
Their clash had more meaning and left a stronger impact which would haunt joe for the rest of his career. Carlos rivera is also better than Sendo. His clash with joe brought out his animosity and ring iq at the same time.
God I love this manga and the movie.
Mori continues to troll his own fans with snail pacing and constant filler chapters. ANJ ain't having that. ANJ is a great boxing manga. Ippo is nothing more than a wishful thinking of mori who's insecure about other race.
ashita no joe is a far cry from all the generic sports manga nowadays.

Ashita no Joe was not a "fighting" manga with mindless serial publication in mind. It was explicitly published as an outlet against the pressure of the old generation upon the new, who were essentially treating them like monoliths and second class citizens on the basis of age and experience. The early chapters of Ashita no Joe became a sobering grounding point for many of the Japanese youth showing how dehumanized and boxed-in they were, and how conformity by force affected their mentality going forward. The manga was the politest "fuck you" to the parents and grandparents of 50s and 60s Japanese babies and the Japanese working class, who basically used the manga to declare that their future was their own and not of the previous generation's.
Irony of ironies that that generation has forgotten what Joe taught them all those years ago in the present day.

Your voice didn't have enough emotion (I don't know any other way to describe it). It felt a bit too much like a retelling I would have liked a bit more opinion in what the stuff you talked about means and would have like a bit more detail with stuff like Rikiishi's training and how much he had to sacrifice. Japanese is a mora-timed language, so each syllable has a space after it and every sound is pronounced at the same length.
You have to separate the vowels.

My man, I've watched Baki since the original anime in the 2000's, that might be one of the worse examples you could have picked lol. Jack was on so many steroids he was supposed to die, but came back and ended up being fine. A character had an actual grenade in his mouth and ate the explosion and lived. Baki was getting his nerves severed and still won the fight and competed in the tournament. Also Baki was infected with poison and the solution was to go fight more to get it out of him. None of these events I just listed, despite being monumental occurrences, had any lasting impacts over the course of the series. Baki doesn't have any effects from the poison after it left his body, or nerve damage from fighting the doctor, or Jack is still fighting people and is just as strong if not stronger despite the damage the steroids did to him. Joe started to get punch drunk from his fights and was slowly killing himself because of his weight cuts which culminated in his death at the end. That is consequences versus no consequences.

My brain just thought that was the pronunciation for some reason, since I've never heard someone say it out loud. I have been corrected and working on saying it correctly lol
