If you're gonna persist on being "empirical", then how about you start comparing fairly. You brought up how Rob Liefeld and Togashi are bad at anatomy when the first does it due to lack of experience while the latter does it due to stylization. Hell, if you wanna bring up his health problems, why don't you start using examples from when he's at his peak? Yu Yu Hakusho is one of his early works, and the character you showed wasn't even supposed to be anatomically correct or natural. Rob Liefeld's Captain America is supposed to be a fucking human, of course people are put off by it.

@@NUEBOHEMIO Most of Togashi's character designs and overall style range from cartoonish to semi-realistic. His art during his peak is nowhere near "doodles", just take a look at his recent chapters and volume covers. Compare that to Rob Liefeld whose designs are extremely repetitive and aims towards realism. His inability to express form in his drawings clash horribly with his inkers and colourists. He aims for a realistic style yet he fails to apply one of the basic fundamentals of drawing. Also, Captain America is supposed to LOOK human. Your super human argument doesn't work because he's supposed to be a buff dude with super human strength, compared to a character that *literally* changes his physical appearance.
@@youraverageguy4930 everyone will have their own way of seeing a character and their own version, nobody complains when Frank Miller makes a square batman. You do not have to defend the indefensible, Togashi put scribbles in the manga, just read the end of the chimera ant arc, on the other hand Rob Liefeld has very good drawings that I did not put in the video. Togashi's designs look better in anime, one example is Yu Yu Hakusho's anime, which improved on several of the manga's designs and the characters look more anatomically correct. I inform myself of the work of both, if you do not believe me, investigate rob liefeld's drawings to see that he has more details and does everything in a more dedicated way, I do not blame togashi, he is good at writing stories, but leaves much to be desired in the drawing.
@@NUEBOHEMIO No one complained about Frank Miller's Batman because it's an artistic choice. He was aiming for a semi-realistic art but he still knew how to apply basic fundamentals of drawing. His later works however, is another story. "I inform myself of the work of both"? "investigate Rob Liefeld's drawings to see that he has more details and does everything in a more dedicated way"? You are literally cherry-picking Togashi's works from the time when he was just starting out as a manga artist and the period when his health started to fuck him up while comparing them to Liefeld's works during his supposed prime. @Shin Shaman man wtf you have problems, you are discussing in this comment thread for 3 months and now you are disrespecting one of the precursors of dark fantasy genre, if you dont like berserk then fine but you dont need to be an idiot, you fkin manchild.
I'm Japanese. I think manga considers movements to be most important, and comic considers paintings to be. So average comic picture looks less lively but more sophisticated as one artwork. Ofcourse there are many exceptions, but there's a certain tendency. I like both.
you pretty much nailed. Superheroes do not particularly have some array of named attacks , repeated over and over , showcasing every motion of it. Let's put "My Hero Academia" as an example , with Endervoir vs Human Torch: Endervoir have "Jetburn" , "Proeminence Burn" and that Fire Web attack and Fire Javelin...all of those are clear-cut attacks that you know what they do and their motion. Meanwhile , Human Torch just flies and makes fire blast , improvising on the spot , his only realy signature move is "Supernova" which is an AoE Explosion , which the closest motion to it would be "Proeminence Burn". But like you said , there are exceptions , there is not much naming and a lot of improvisation on the characters in how they fight , but Batman and Spider-Man puts movements in a more front seat , specially Spider-Man.
It's preatty visible on "Spider-Man by Bagley" vs "Spider-Man by Murata". Murata's Spider-Man looks like he could start moving at any second and his webs look like they are still mid-extending outside the screen, while Bagley's looks like a photo with perfect lightning and composition, Like Spider-Man posed mid action for the selfie. There are exceptions, of course, but in general comics and manga look like that.
Well, in a comic three people can work as a basimo inker and colorist in a manga they can work up to an entire studio in fact a manga by Kentaro Miura (Duranki) had help from a studio
I'm not gonna lie, the matchups were crazy well chosen. Props for putting in extra effort to compare the artists as fairly as possible by choosing really fitting matchups.

this video is proof that there is no shortage of drawing talent in america for comics, the thing that went wrong are the stories, while in Japan the creator have their own story the present it the publishers give it a chance and things go from there, in America there is a narative to push certain stories and agendas and ignore the ones that dont follow it. such a shame.
@@MrGalRoz the whole idea of certain publishers having their own universe is what kills the comic industry in the us, and that's why invincible is so highly appraised because it's its own thing
The thing i like manga is that the characters are owned by their creators, all the mangakas presented here own and created their respective characters and their universes, meanwhile the american ones, they indeed draw well, but they didn't create the characters( in the majority of drawings i see) and these are owned by corporations, the only real creator was stan lee, who is resting in heaven.
Thats not fair to say at all and that's rude to comic creator there many western comics where they create there own universe and characters your just talking about marvel and DC which is rude to western comic creators.

Yes and some kiddos or ( some of the fans ) just being cringe and kiddos to say comic this manga this lol . They didn't know some mangaka and comic artist loved each other art
They do not sell and ended up wasted, Yes Vertigo, Image Etc broke this mold, but ironically they ended up being just like Marvel & DC with new created characters being sucked in to the Universe of each company. What the West needs is its own Shonen Jump as a way for aspiring artist to get recognition that way the mold of "insert comic house here" would be broken.

They overly use square-shaped, cross-hatching as being using a rule as well. The smoth transition drawn in manga by a loose cross-hatching outlining sphere shapes makes it look more "alive", the gesture and action is pushed-up. Also dirtiness spots aren't drawn in comic, making a illustration as clean as they can. There's no uneveness as in manga- even smoke is clean making motioned action scenes feel a bit dimmed compared with manga. Ah, also the diference between black and white zones are sharply distincted, there's vaguely a intermediate zone between them. That narrows a little the expresiveness of some escenes.
It almost feels like taboo if a comic artist doesn’t draw Batman or Superman. I always thought I was weird how DC and Marvel monopolize the comic industry in the west. And we have these new upcoming comic artist with unique styles that are kind of wasted on marvel and dc. And the concept of heroes and villains is too cut and dry to be relatable and kind of boring.
It isn't just hero and villain, some comics are, but not all of them, is more complex than that, of course those conceps are there, but in what story arent? Almost every story has those conceps, and its fine, what matters is what the writter does with them
@@cradodragmire1563 tbh i might have a unpopular opinion but i like superman the most because he is the OG he paved the way for most super heros in comics. Everytime they make superman relatable he becomes more uninteresting example n52 they made his powers weaker and became more cool and it absolutely bombed...... the way to make superman is he has to be noble, a boy scout and inspire. The story is long but not boring. He wanted Hunter x Hunter to have a satisfying ending but due to his current health state, he cannot continue the manga for awhile.
The different is only one thing. Creativity and freedom. Tell me, when is the last time you see an original comic from western reach the same height with batman/superman? Close to none. Western talent are wasted imo. They have amazing talent but never utilize it. No original character and original story. All refresh same story but with a twist here and there and spin off.
Mangakas can shine better as the industry is not saturated with just a few characters.the problem with American comics is that it's soo convoluted, most of the characters have a shit ton of comics and it makes it hard to follow
Comics aren't really saturated with few characters there is millions of characters and stories and even comics aren't just Marvel/dc theres multiple different stuff

I'll be honest man, the west _had_ amazing artists as household names in the comic industry at one point. But nowadays unfortunately not so much, at least the great ones aren't well known. The only ones getting any form of recognition are the ones drawing sub-par "politically correct" comics.

I think my favorite thing from this video was seeing the similarities between these artists. In regards to Mignola vs. Atsushi, you can see how they use depth and shadow in their work. Its semi simplified but it never loses its emotion. I feel this was less like a "who did it better" and more of a "hey look, these are two different genres of art, but look at how alike they can be!" and for that, i appreciate this video, it was nice to see this.
They aren't different genre's more different adaptations of one Medium The difference is literally only the place of origin and the cultural influence in that.
I never liked this stance in these kind of discussions... cause deep down you have a preference if you're honest with yourself. Ferrari vs Lamborghini, Red or Blue, Madrid vs Barcelona, Prince or Michael Jackson... deep down you have a choice for all those, and that's ok.
@@cyspiegel8603 it’s common sense really. What you prefer is not the same as what is objectively “better". I may like metal more than rock but that doesn’t make rock worse, it’s just different, which is why art is mostly subjective rather than factual

There’s shitty comics and trashy mangas but there’re also a lot of great comics and mangas. Don’t judge things by it lowest point, be fair. If manga fans want to bring out Vagabond and Berserk then Comic fans can bring out masterpieces like Sandman, the Dark Knight or The Killing Joke,... Overall this video is only based around art so I think we should talk about art style more. Personally I prefer comic art style for its epic coloring and amazing anatomy, poses! Nonetheless, some mangas really exceeded those criteria too, it’s amazing to see how different culture adapt the same kind of visual storytelling
Despite how different the artstyle is from comic vs manga, you can tell they are very similar. Whether it’s detailed, perspective or inking, they’re all equally amazing. They’re all amazing artists and there’s no need to say which is better. :)
Its just the style of comics, but you get used to it in my opinion. Coming from manga to comics I thought was weird too, but I learned to enjoy it and get a feel for it. @@Ouchthathurt843 artistically they both have their strengths and weaknesses. Story wise and even emotionally i would pick manga. Not to mention they also have so much more variety. They can literally make a story about farming, cooking, and sleeping have a nice spin to it.
The video was overall good. But that shade you threw at togashi was unfair. Dude has chronic back pain which is why his art is not always consistent. When he is feeling well his art is God tier. Versus lifield who has bad anatomy.
I feel it is unfair as well, looking at the amount of beautiful artwork he’s committed in YYH and HxH before his hiatus went far off shouldn’t make him even close to being one of “the worst”, he even reworked on panels in HxH which he himself knew was inexcusable. Sure I agree he is literally shitting out dialogue in the latest HxH chapters but come on, the dude himself has drawn so much beautiful artwork in the panels of his manga. Which the majority of them have been great to look at, especially for a Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.
@@HerMi.T no it’s not. It’s different in a fantasy world like one piece where the anatomy of that kind is part of the world. In the comics liefeld was making it doesn’t make sense. I think that people need to understand the vast difference between the Manga industry, the traditional comics industry in the US, and the European comics industry. In Japan, manga books are so mainstream that people left them on the subway's seats! Also, the characters are totally not owned by their creators, legally talking, the creators are bound to the magazines and publication houses they signed with. Example : when Shaman King was cancelled from Jump because the ratings got too low according to Jump magazine, which is a huge corporation in Japan, Hiroyuki Taikei could NOT self-publish or even seek another publisher...! He lost the possibility of ending is epic 32 books series, up until another publication house decided to buy the rights from Jump.
The Manga industry is a lot more like the Pop music or Hollywood industry in the West. It's hugely mainstream, competitive, the creators are rock stars, but there a whole team behind the most popular series, much more than for comics. The size and nature of the industry is entirely different. Mangas are consumed like fast-food. In the West the comics is now mostly a collectors' market; and in Europe, it turned into a collectors' market a long time ago with the large-format hardcover books. I'm not sure people get the scope of work needed to be a successful published mangaka in Japan. 60-80 hours weeks non-stop and your entire life's work, even if it's cult, can get cancelled over some rating. Think 3x the amount of work needed for a successful webcomic. It simply is not the comic paradise we want to believe it is here in the West. There is a cost to selling so many copies of anything.
It's obvious, isn't it, that other companies can't sell Spiderman exclusively on their own, even in west? The main issue is the payment of royalties to the author. manag gets royalties to the author. The comic system, where the author does not receive royalties, should be seriously considered.
Wow. I honestly thought this would be just an average video of a fanboy, instead, I found an unbiased comparison of powerhouse artists and their counterpart of the other side. Well done, NUEBOHEMIO. You're obviously knowledgeable on the stuff, and you clearly did your research.
With Comic book artists, they put a lot of shadow and detail, which I love and is really difficult to imitate With Mangakas they simplify a few things while managing to make it look cool, they create new cool characters which I like Conclusion: Comic book artists are amazing at shadow and detail Mangakas are better at fashion and characters But both are good at making characters seem 3D and realistic
@@doclouis4236 European comics is an absolute goldmine, and it deserves more attention in North America. For me, Asterix is absolutely magical. Reading Asterix as an adult: Suddenly notice all the historical jokes and references that completely flew over my head!
When people say this same thing but with comics all the anime fans start assuming they've never read any manga's. I don't know why everyone pushes down comics so much, they are good a lot of the time, and as well as this people complain about how op the characters are and complain about scaling (and having looked at how some anime characters are scaled, making fun of comics scaling is amusingly ironic)

My favorites: Hirohiko Araki, Kentaro Miura (Rest in Peace), Yusuke Murata and Takehito Inoue Bonus: Akira Toriyama his style it's simple but one of the most recognizable and unique
Hard to say, there are a-lot of great works from these artist. The only thing I can says is; in manga the artist puts in a-lot more emotion in there works.
I wouldn't say that. They have to follow a certain style to be considered manga. Comic don't have boundaries, they could even do manga looking art style. But yes I do agree they put more emotion into the faces, kind like whay Todd mcfarlane does, he breaks the anatomy.
I love how you found on both sides artist with similar styles/techniques to judge them fairly, which just shows that at the end of the day beautuful art is beautiful art
@Hamza Akram it should be evident comics go for a more realistic art style. If any “anime weebs” won’t admit it I seriously doubt they are above the age of 13. Manga IMO still have much better storylines and characters.
I just want to present some respect to Kentaro Miura, who can only be described as a genius. He gave us an excellent story, an excellent narrative, excellent character and his amazing and precious drawing in Berserk.
As someone already mentioned I also think that comic artists should start to develop their own stories and characters instead of rehashing the same 10 heroes over and over again. Manga still stays fresh all the time because so many new stories and characters are constantly coming out which boosts its variety a lot over comics.
Horikoshi's art was not at all a testament to his talent! His covers and other pieces have far more detail than the ones displayed, really wish you had shown more
I honestly have mass amounts of respect for both parties for their craft and and just... amazing art. They’re both completely different styles with their own charm I LOVE BOTH
What is important in manga is not only good drawing and story, but also skillful spatial awareness, pauses, realism and movement. Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame has completely mastered all of these things. Well, he grew tired of his weekly serialization and began to dislike drawing. His early drawings revolutionized manga, as did those of Osamu Tezuka and Katsuhiro Otomo.
Honestly something interesting that this video unintentionally highlights is how the American comics industry evolved in such a way that it’s mainly ruled by the institutions set up from the original major IPs which are constantly reinterpreted and reiterated upon. So being a comic artist in America most likely means your best known work is for one of those well known and recognized IPs. Meanwhile in Japan each comic artists is usually a mangaka and is pretty much their own thing with their own series that have just as much, if not more, of a chance to make an impact as the oldest and most established IPs (which, if still around, are usually more so long running series divided into multiple sections rather than constantly reinventing/recycling themselves like in the USA). This is pretty interesting to just see and kinda makes sense when you consider each country’s general economic and cultural tendencies

Well, in a comic three people can work as a basimo inker and colorist in a manga they can work up to an entire studio in fact a manga by Kentaro Miura (Duranki) had help from a studio

something about Americana comics that doesn't look as expressive as manga. May be it looks too realistic and not and exaggerated in facials.
Maybe you haven't read enough American comics or maybe you've read the wrong ones
Both style are amazing, but still preferred manga expressions.
That could also be a plus, no?

European comics industry are dead!!!!!!!!!!

I'm Japanese myself and prefer mangas over comics overall, but The Adventures of Tintin has special place in my heart. It's my childhood.
Its great.
I'm surprised no one has done a video about European comics vs. Manga yet.
Exactly my words
@@doclouis4236 European comics is an absolute goldmine, and it deserves more attention in North America.
For me, Asterix is absolutely magical. I could pick an old book every couple of years and have a completely different experience.
Reading Asterix as kid: Laugh at all the funny jokes and slapstick.
I would never compare beautiful art to each other they're both honestly talented without manga and comic book artists our favorite characters would be nothing they're just important as their stories
Honestly, that was harder than I thought it would be. Every one of these artists is amazing!
You never knew how similar yet different comics and manga art is until you see them side to side
I love both comics and Manga art. ❤️❤️
i love how you pair the different artist with almost the same art style so that no more argument between which is better
I don't really care about comparing them, but i think it's cool that you found similar art styles, also a great vid for manga recommendations (or for comics)
Agreed
He forgot two greatest authors, Alan Moore and Kazuko Koike, Alan Moore is regarded as one of the best comics book writers, his Watchmen is regarded as one of the greatest comic books ever and his another masterpieces are V for Vendetta, From hell, Batman: the killing joke all of them are 10/10 and Kazuko Koike is one of the best mangakas, his notable manga is "Lone wolf and cub" is regarded as one of the best and influential manga his other masterpieces are Wounded Man, Lady snowblood, Crying Freeman, Oscar, all of them are 10/10
I just love seeing Guts and Wolverine side by side
Those two gritty would secretly like each other
@@PrimarchRoboleonFrenchyman
And both of their lives have been filled with nothing but pain and suffering.
Gambino and Thomas Logan are pieces of SHIT MAN.
John Howlett Sr is the Dad that we need.
hmmm, i personally wouldnt say Togashi was bad, the character was supposed to look grotesque, it wasnt supposed to be human. It was literally written as a monster, so it should look like one.
We have the same 💭thoughts
Indeed
I really like the artists you chose to compare with each other, they seem to have the same art direction but off course using different skills
Rip to Kentaro Miura who’s name will be known for creating a master piece and will always live on in his work. Guts- “He died doing what he wanted, no matter what right? I bet he was happy”
I lol'd at the "worst" comic artist and "worst" manga artist.
Whoever does Mob Psycho 100 should've gotten an honorable mention in that category 😂😂
Thats the same dude that did one punch man lol. He wasnt an artist to begin with but he is a pretty damn good storyteller
@@cyspiegel8603 "One" the same guy behind OPM
They’re both so amazing, I really like comics because of how usually realistic and detailed they’re drawn but I also like manga because of how expressive and fun it is. There’s no way I could ever pick one.
My favorites: Hirohiko Araki, Kentaro Miura (Rest in Peace), Yusuke Murata and Takehito Inoue
Bonus: Akira Toriyama his style it's simple but one of the most recognizable and unique
Okay, seeing Darwyn Cooke paired with Akira Toriyama was just one of the godliest things I've ever seen.
Hard to say, there are a-lot of great works from these artist. The only thing I can says is; in manga the artist puts in a-lot more emotion in there works.
Plus alot of screen tone hehe
That's why it's their own characters that they put a little bit of their persona in them
I wouldn't say that. They have to follow a certain style to be considered manga. Comic don't have boundaries, they could even do manga looking art style. But yes I do agree they put more emotion into the faces, kind like whay Todd mcfarlane does, he breaks the anatomy.
The selling rate of manga us much higher
@@dc3540 That's because stupid kids like boys that look like girls. Weirdest generation ever...
Actually funny how people get so defensive. Is just a video HxH is good, stop whining
Want to use killer queen on them?
I agree, I also love yu yu hakusho but it's undeniable what is stated about the author
@Shaman X you are garbage
@Shin Shaman Okay cool
@@TheUltimaBoxer You are all garbage!
(Keanu Reeves reference)
I love how you found on both sides artist with similar styles/techniques to judge them fairly, which just shows that at the end of the day beautuful art is beautiful art
Thank you! This video help me a lot to know more about the varius styles. Also i think the stilystic comparison here is great!
Comic book artists take it for me. Very close but the fact that they have a more realistic art style in the comics is what I like more personally
Go look at vagabond art, it's incredibly realistic
@@guts1859 one artist doesn’t make up for a collective of artist. Sorry just not how it works
@Hamza Akram it should be evident comics go for a more realistic art style. If any “anime weebs” won’t admit it I seriously doubt they are above the age of 13. Manga IMO still have much better storylines and characters.
@Hamza Akram I was agreeing with you idiot
I have read both comics and manga so
Manga:artistic
Comics:realistics
In the end both are equally good cause both have there pros and cons
I just want to present some respect to Kentaro Miura, who can only be described as a genius. He gave us an excellent story, an excellent narrative, excellent character and his amazing and precious drawing in Berserk.
idc about the whole vs thing, this is just a vid full of FIRE art
Never had to pause as many times in a youtube video. Such great art gotta admire it
As someone already mentioned I also think that comic artists should start to develop their own stories and characters instead of rehashing the same 10 heroes over and over again. Manga still stays fresh all the time because so many new stories and characters are constantly coming out which boosts its variety a lot over comics.
Alot of them did that and most of them are published by image comics like James Harren he was doing thor now he went on to do rumble and ultramega now
I'm late, but this comment sounds like it comes from someone who doesn't read much American comics.
@@dushaunlewis7574 usually people that say this don't, I've met people that didn't know TWD and Riverdale were based on comics.
De ce que je sais y'a des comics independant et puis moi ça me dérange pas
I jusr hate how much of comics have this exaggerated looks on them
You don't even compared the arts of osamu tezuka and Jack Kirby.
You can't just put gods to fight
Their fight would break the universe apart, it's like the OG superman vs Simon the Digger
Jack Kirby was more of an artist, Tezuka was more of a cartoonist

Dang, you could see the talent of the artists and the effort they out in to polish their art
Horikoshi's art was not at all a testament to his talent! His covers and other pieces have far more detail than the ones displayed, really wish you had shown more
I honestly have mass amounts of respect for both parties for their craft and and just... amazing art. They’re both completely different styles with their own charm I LOVE BOTH
Frank Miller’s work is personally my favourite, I also like Kentaro Miura’s art (Rest in peace)
I never realized how much comic art looked like manga art when it's not colored
You cannot judge them by their differences, they are all very impressive, they all practiced doing what they love (drawing) to become their best.
似た作風の作家同士で比べていてすごい。コミック・マンガ両方へのリスペクトを感じる
分かる。
よく調べであるし、愛感じる。

メビウスの一人勝ちでしょ
I honestly prefer manga to comics but comics still look amazing
The art is more refined in realismwhile manga tend to stylise.
Yeah but comic don't have many charater then manga
@@jsonboy2365 they will counter that with crossovers.
The first drawing by Yoshitaka Amano that appears, what is it from? 16:47
All these artists are so good it feels wrong for me to even try comparing them
What is important in manga is not only good drawing and story, but also skillful spatial awareness, pauses, realism and movement.
