Thanks buddy. Loooove AVOS. Yeh i have wins and i have failures. I think this is the first time ive grafted avos during winter, so i hope they take. cheers mate :)
I did my first graft 3 days ago (August 10), a cold-tolernt Mexican type avocado, "Stewart", which I am growing in Yoakum, Texas, climate zone 9A, and it's approaching it's first year in the ground (2 more months) It has fresh growth, so I got some, about as you've shown, kept it cool a couple of hours as we drove back to Austin, where I have the seedlings on the back patio. I used a fresh #10 blade scalpel to make a careful V, about 3 cm long, into the "Lula" seedling (best rootstock for Texas, by broad consensus, but not cold tolerant much below freezing, being a West-Indian/Guatemalan hybrid). The diameter was the same between scion and seedling, so the whole cambium lined right up, essentially perfectly. I Buddy-Taped it with Japanese label Buddy Tape (cheaper online). I was careful not to touch any cut surface with my (contaminated) fingers, and to rinse the scalpel in tap water after cleaning, then pack it away in a baggie. Nothing is dead yet, here inside the sliding glass door to the back. I'm hopeful. The odds on this are not so good, I read.
I learned a lot! TY. Explained very well! I plan to grow from seed then know to graft when it’s about 1 year old. Again TY for demonstrating the grafting technique. CA 2021
Mine grown in water from seed is now 6 years old, and still in water (changed weekly, adding a little Nutrisol every two weeks). It's roughly 1m high and has around 15 leaves. Compared to a commercial plant mine looks like one that's 3 months old. :( I think now would be a good time to transplant into a bigger pot with soil.

Hi, very informative. I have a problem grafting Avo's. I have no issues grafting any other type of fruit tree and have about a 90% success rate. I have now tried about 30 avo grafts with a 100% failure rate. not only are my scions failing but, but it is affecting the root stock by killing off the main stem, forcing the young rootstock to bud lower down. What am I doing wrong do you think? thanks Robert in NZ
Cheers, ok a few things. the scion has to have buds that are swollen. make sure both root stock and scion are active when grafting. DONT over water a newly grafted plant. Spend time to align atleast one side when making the graft. the cambium layer has to meet, if not this will result in the most failures. so scion and rootstook should be as close to the same diameter. Wrap the graft tight. Just keep going with it dont give up
@@eatyourgarden Hi from Zanzibar I do have the same problem as Robert above. The extra thing with me is I have been noticing a lot of moisture collected itself in the plastic tube covering the scions after the procedure. At 1st I was fastening the plastic with the seedling below the union to reduce dehydration of the scion. Seeing water killing the scions, I decided not to tight up the bottom of the plastic below. Still the scions rot. I use tree shed for nursery.
Good show. Showed all the important steps clear and well done. But cutting towards you with that blade gives me visions of a thumb on the floor. Think I''be trying it (not the thumb on the floor bit) thanks!
Thanks for the video! Going to make my first graft soon! I've only got four root stalks to try though, so I've just planted a handful more of avocado seeds. Hope to have a lot more stalks to practice on next year! Guess I'll be buying stalks to practice on for now.
Instead of wrapping the scion could I just after grafting it on to the rooting stock, just bag to whole thing covering the scion & just below the graft union?
Really helpful, thankyou! If I bought a semi-mature, already grafted avo tree from a nursery, could I then use that to take scions to graft onto young avo trees grown from seeds myself?
Thank you! This video was much more informative than many of the others I’ve watched. Do you have to graft 2 different kinds of avocado? The only luck I’ve had with growing from seed is with the Hass. I have 3 of them growing now but am wondering if I can graft them to each other or if I need to hunt down a different breed (?) of avocado.
This is so late but there is a guy just below your comment who answers your question with a detailed description of how he grafted two different avocado types and was hoping for success. Awesome informative video, really appreciated. Thank you! Because of my inexperience, I overwatered my avocado tree and it died ( or so I thought) from root rot. Months after I stopped watering it I realized that it was actually alive and had started growing up from the very bottom, since the rest of the tree (graft included) is dried. The new branch is about a foot below the grafting. Do I need to graft it again? Thank you!
