I love your videos! Long time subscriber here. I think the misunderstanding is the way things worded. We graft scions or budwood from “known cultivars”,These known cultivars would have to have fruited at some time.... probably way back or how else would you know the variety ? Lol. This said you can certainly take budwood from a young tree that itself has not fruited.... But its genetics are from one that has! I agree, though, its best to graft either ON the main trunk or very close to it on the branch as the scion will be pushed by the main tree to try to replicate the branch that was cut away. If on the end of the branch, the tree may not need to push through new buds, I have used the ends of branches to demonstrate the grafting cuts on large trees, some take some do not. During the grafting process, We are combining tissue of a superior cultivar ( budwood) with a rootstock or seedling to create a new tree. This tree isnt exactly a clone of of the original as we have added a different rootstock to make a completely new tree. Sounds to be splitting hairs... but In my plant propagation class i got the answer wrong when I answered clone. The correct answer is that grafting is a “ transplant “. Anyway, I look forward to your next video. Your enthusiasm is unparalleled! Have a Great Day and Happy growing!

Hi AJ have a Hass tree growing from seed it about 1.4m or about 3.5ft high what to try to graft A and a B variety on this tree can you get a smaller dwarf variety as avacardo trees can get very tall would like you comments thanks
Yes you can graft some small or dwarf varieties onto your tree. I would suggest Kona Sharwil, Wurtz, Pinkerton, Reed. These varieties can be kept small and productive.

Ajmal, help me out here. If I multi graft my avocado tree with Hass and Fuerte (I know, boring but is what I can get). Will the yield be larger than just having a Hass and spraying with honey? I don't have enough space for a second tree to plant a type B next to my Hass.
Yield might be larger, but not by much. If you graft Fuerte to your Hass tree, what will happen is you will get a longer avocado season, because Hass avocados mature in the spring to late summer, and Fuerte avocados mature in winter to early spring. This gives you an avocado season that can possibly last six months! As long as you can attract pollinators (like bees) to the avocado flowers, you should get plenty of fruit!
I grew an avocado seed in water and then planted it. It came from an avocado I bought in a grocery store. I don't even remember what kind of avocado it was. I am being told it will not bear fruit if it is not grafted. Is this true? Thanks. I enjoyed your video.

Hi . Thank you From Jordan the middle eastern country for your very informative channel . I have a quick question on avocado tree bud and v grafting . I have several seedlings that I propagated from seeds and want to graft them but not sure which methods to use , note we are in late spring here and weather is abundantly warm . Thanks in advance .
Hi. Thank you for watching. I love Jordan 🇯🇴. In my experience, the best method is the cleft graft (also known as wedge graft or V graft). Since it’s warm in your area, I would put the grafted seedlings in partial shade or indoors in a bright room. Once the graft grows and the first leaves mature fully, they can go into the full sun. Hope this helps.
@@AJTheGraftMan Thank you too for your kind reply . To my best of understanding from your advice that the cleft ( wedge) graft method would work anytime indoor if the seedlings were in complete shade regardless of the season ( spring/summer) . I will try the wedge method on planted seedlings and wrap them in foil for those in the garden like yours . Last night i tried the bud method and wrapped them with foil too for the scions planted already since a year . I will see how things goes, it is my first experience anyways . I had hoped you're near to donate some seedlings because i propagated 150 seeds into seedlings and they look very healthy different brands but they're gonna need a lots of work the rest of the year . God bliss you and have a wonderful rest of your day . Warmest regards . Mohammad
Hello AJ, I used your videos and tips to place 6 grafts from 2 different trees on an appropriately 6 1/2 ft., extremely health 1 1/2 year old tree that grew from seedling (without my assistance-just started under a very old tree we lost). 3 of the grafts were very successful, but my concern/question is: should I trim away branches from the new growing graft so that all the energy goes to the new growth or should I leave it to provide shade for the trunk and the new graft growth. Thank you for your excellent instructions.
Hi! I’m glad your grafts took! I don’t understand your question. Which growth were you considering trimming? Is it growth from the rootstock or the scion?
Another quick question (maybe stupid question) every graft I see is close to thr soil or root, I just had my first 2 successful graft to a seed. As thr tree grows shouldn't the knot where thr graft was done grow upward as well. I'm even sure if thr question I'm asking is making sense 🤓
The knot where the graft was done won’t grow upward. It will always remain at the point where it was done. The scion will grow upward and the trunk will thicken up. Good question
Can anyone tell me if I have a tree coming out of seed Does that mean that the tree needs to be grafted? It will not produce the original fruit from the seed? Thank you !
You can let it grow but it can take many years to produce fruit. Some seed grown trees never produce fruit. Grafting is the way to go if you want fruit faster
Great video. Thankyou. What type of grafting tape do you use? It looks like it sticks on its self. The tape I bought from Bunnings is much harder and you have to the it on. Would love to buy the stuff you have. Also what's a good time to graft? I've tried grafting on my ago plants before But it didn't take. And they were young. I think I've got better info now from you.
Hello Ajmal .... I just discovered you and your fantastic advice and video's, so am now subscribed. I live very near the beach in San Diego so have somewhat sandy soil. I bought and planted 5-gallon 5-foot tall trees ... a Haas and a Fuerte (both appearing to be grafted trunks and neither old enough to have produced fruit yet) in December and they are doing very well, each having plenty of branches and buds developing. Would it be too early to graft a stem from a neighbors Reed and Edranol trees onto either or both of my young trees? All advice is sincerely appreciated.
Thanks for subscribing. You can certainly graft onto your trees. I would graft onto a branch that is as least as thick as a pencil, but the thicker the branch is better in this case. And, I would graft somewhere near the top of the tree, because the tree naturally pushes a lot of its energy towards the top area, so a graft would likely do better there. Hope this helps
@@AJTheGraftMan Will do, Ajmal .... thank you very much for the quick reply. I'll update you as to the success of this in 4 to 8 weeks as I've gleaned from your various videos.

Might be a stupid question, but can you graft scions to a grafted tree? Like I have a three year old grafted Holiday but want other varieties on it.
Not a stupid question. The answer is yes you certainly can
@@AJTheGraftMan Awesome! I will try my first attempts in the fall. Thanks for the fast reply.
AJ the link for the parafilm tape on Ebay list a bunch of them. Which of the did you buy? Can you be more specific on the particular Ebay seller?
Can anyone tell me if I have a tree coming out of seed
Does that mean that the tree needs to be grafted?
It will not produce the original fruit from the seed?
Thank you !
You can let it grow but it can take many years to produce fruit. Some seed grown trees never produce fruit. Grafting is the way to go if you want fruit faster
Great video. Thankyou. What type of grafting tape do you use? It looks like it sticks on its self. The tape I bought from Bunnings is much harder and you have to the it on. Would love to buy the stuff you have.
Also what's a good time to graft? I've tried grafting on my ago plants before But it didn't take. And they were young. I think I've got better info now from you.
Thanks. It’s called parafilm grafting tape. Best time is early spring
Awesome ❤
Can i grow avocado tree from its steam?
That's awesome!
