Why was I not aware of this performance until today? One of my favorite Beatles songs, covered by one of my favorite bands -- and of all the Beatles songs, "Across the Universe" is the perfect, most fitting selection to be covered by the Moody Blues.
Wow I've never heard Justin & John sing this. It's fantastic. I see John playing acoustic guitar too. They have great harmony and on top of that they are both gorgeous
yes this is beautiful..and yes I was there: 55 years of doing TM....it answered the call of 'a quieter mind and a genuine spiritual growth'. The Beatles certainly proceeded me and had a brief flirt with TM...my decision was based on my personal practitioner's experience and the being of my 'initiator'...they had what I needed. Now the song...they are great doing this....the Beatles were such a 'lightning rod' of cultural change...I suppose they were our modern Demi-gods as let's face it, most of us were raised commercially..and for disseminating information that cannot be beat. We in time realized they were transmitting hundreds of messages that ran like a torrent thru their 'cultural perch'...yes we realized...only George took any of this seriiously.....but blessings to a very special period of explosive creativity in music and personal growth for all of us. That period was 'volcanic' and so much was thrown out: some drug based and toxic...as well as the reality the drug tries to imitate that fortunately many of us came to choose..usually after finding drugs such a dead end.....
More than 31 years after this performance I get to hear it for the first time. Love the Moodies and the Blue Jays. They do this song more than justice.
This is one of John's finest songs and the guys did it just perfectly with Justin's beautiful voice, the orchestra and the beautiful surroundings...10 thumbs up.
OMG, I can almost hear John.... Justin & John = wonderful rendition! Never got to see Beatles, but have seen Moodies twice! Love you both, miss Ray and Graeme. ❤️
The very best music that we can create as humans will be far exceeded by the music that is to come.....the key is to accept the free ticket to that show.
Such a beautiful song. There's a guitar Lick in this song. And I hear the same guitar lick in a Pink Floyd song. Finally The Moody Blues got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame long overdue. And I know that John spirit will always be with us even though he's gone. Across the Universe. The only thing I can really say about John Lennon and the Beatles is there music is fresh it never gets old and never gets stale not too many bands can do that. And yes there's been others that stand up to time somewhere over a century. But those of us who were alive back when John and the Beatles were young and checking it out we were totally blessed by their music and now that we're old we're still blessed and when we're gone the world will be blessed. And no man can't take that away.
I'm so proud to be a Birmingham Lass & this song is heaven.Justin Hayward voice of an Angel & John Lodge you are both amazing & covered this John Lennon classic effortlessly 💗🧚♀️🎸☮️🕊️
Yes I agree. Justin Hayward has the best voice in melodic pop, much better than any of the Beatles. . Your fellow Brummie John Lodge isn"t that far behind him either. The two of them were the main men in the Moody Blues. The Moodies are the best band ever and all we have now are the band's memories as Justin and John pursue their solo careers. When I saw John Lodge on his last solo tour 3 years ago I met his daughter Emily who is his manager. She gave me the impression the two of them have grown apart from each other.
Only 186.000 views. Melancholy sets in. There should be, at a minimum, 7.5 Billion views, and then perhaps we would discover world peace. I love this cover. I love those two guys. I love this song and its creator. C'mon people, give it a listen.
The Moody Blues...one of my favorite bands...seen them 6 times...love you for singing this classic John Lennon tune...the tune has Moody Blues similarities...I love John Lennon and I love the Moody Blues.
Grammys 2005 was decent. Velvet Revolver with Bono, Billie Joe Armstrong, Steven Tyler, Norah Jones, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Brian Wilson, Tim McGraw. Nuts really. But that's more an 'award show spectacle' than anything. Honestly, Scorpions did a phenomenal cover of this. (Yes, that Scorpions)
WOW!! I’ve listened maybe 10 times in a row. Stunning! Don’t know how this was hidden for so long, but this is Amazing. And Justin and John, and the Moodies, yeah they’re good!
Can't believe it's been so long since this was recorded. Absolutely beautiful! I don't think anyone else, except John Lennons son, could have sung it any better. What an honor for them to play this tribute..
Omg...thàt was so freaking amazing I'm staggered. I love the Moody blues and I love the Beatles. This is a perfect merge or Fusion. They should have released this as a single
Thanks for the post, I was at the concert at the Docks in front of the Liver Building, 5 hours of televised live artists. They actually ran it 20 mins behind, just in case, of course Yoko and Sean where there, sadly none of the Beatles but they sent video messages, if I remember rightly. Christopher Reeves was also one of the presenters there, shortly before his tragic accident. An afternoon I will never forget, and feel privileged to have witnessed. Thanks again.
Wow I never knew the Moodys did this! I only heard The Beatles do it and an amazing song. They did fantastic! I like the way this song has transparencies, like it overlays itself with ethereal layers, something like water and light. I like how they had the peace symbol in the background too! Thanks Redbaron863 for sharing this! PEACE EVERYONE!
That surprised me...have been a big Lennon & Beatles fan for 40 yrs and the Moodies version is the toppermost of the poppermost. Always thought it was a very positive song though alot of people thought it wasn't. Suppose it could depend on what mood someones in at the time, but the song is basically uplifting to me. Cheerz to the Moodies.
I was lucky enough to be at this concert in Liverpool. To hear two of the Moody Blues sing one of my favourite John Lennon songs was awe inspiring. What a superb and quite emotional concert that was. I still have my ticket and a huge acetate of the original advertising poster for the event.
All in all this is a great compliment for Ray !!! His rôle being played by thé worldwide well known ,Ian Anderson .Glad for Ray .Justin too jamming with THE leader of such another top class band which was Tull .in 1969 ,i did thought some of Tull's song were moodies ! Too some of thé Moody Blues (eg " so deep within you") made me thought of Tull's !!!
And I thought only The Beatles could perform this piece of magic, but leave it to The Moody Blues to be able to master anything! I hate the R 'n R Hall of Fame!
I think that even though the ending of their Induction was a "hot mess" due to the Hall of Fame people blowing it timewise and letting people ramble on, cutting into the Moody's time at the microphone, they took it with their usual grace. They had wanted to pay tribute to Ray Thomas and thank their Families. Some people wanted to blame them, but that's NOT how it was. I was there. Also, the free form jam by the winners at the end of the program was cut as well. The fans have always loved that. At least, the Moody Blues made it in the 1st time nominated - THANK YOU FANS!!! YOU NEVER GAVE UP!!!
Absolutely the BEST cover of "Across the Universe". Justin doesn't just sing words that were written by "someone else (John Lennon"), he is totally inspired to bring the full sense of what John's mind was creating when he was putting pen to paper. The result is so much more than the sum of it's parts and Justin understands this. The result is a real feeling of someone reaching out to you - urging you to see and feel what he does. You know you'll go with him, because now YOU understand what this journey means ... *John Lodge also performs backing vocalist and guitar
As the English would want to say..."Rather Nice!" Now! I'd swear that's a Justin Hayward/The Moody Blues tune about the same time The Beatles were in the same World with The Moody Blues... and Life seemed so "Good Then!" Aye!
Justin and John's version of this lovely Beatles song is as beautifully delivered as the original. 💖
They are in The Hall of Fame now!!! They should have been in there earlier!!! The best group EVER!!!! 💙💙💙💙💙........
So beautifully delivered by the best voice in British music history😊❤❤❤❤
Why was I not aware of this performance until today? One of my favorite Beatles songs, covered by one of my favorite bands -- and of all the Beatles songs, "Across the Universe" is the perfect, most fitting selection to be covered by the Moody Blues.
One of the best Beatles' songs ever and the Moodie Blues did it justice!
SPOT ON!!! Moody Blues can do anything justice!!
He prob wrote it they had 5/6 songwriters the Beatles
Superb. John is smiling!
John is always smiling!❤
Wow I've never heard Justin & John sing this. It's fantastic.
I see John playing acoustic guitar too. They have great harmony and on top of that they are both gorgeous
This event happened the day my sweet daughter, Angela Danielle, was born .... May 5, 1990 ❤ That sure "changed my world"!😂❤ Love the Moody Blues! 🎶🎵💗
Justin Hayward and John Lodge forever. What a reverential, perfect cover of this beautiful song.
Beautiful...
Thank you, Mr Lennon.
This is so good that if I never heard The Beatles do this I wouldn’t have any doubt that this was written by Hayward and Lodge.
How much do I love these two guys? Theirs is the music that will be played in heaven.
I would expect nothing less of a supreme talent like Justin Hayward. Pure unadulterated vocal talent.
yes this is beautiful..and yes I was there: 55 years of doing TM....it answered the call of 'a quieter mind and a genuine spiritual growth'. "limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns ..." Unbelievably beautiful.
Beautiful version ❤❤❤
THE BEST VERSION IMHO, JUSTIN HAYWARD HAS BEST VOICE IN MUSIC HISTORY
This band is the soundtrack to my life.
Wow! Mine is Insane Clown Posse.
More than 31 years after this performance I get to hear it for the first time. Love the Moodies and the Blue Jays. They do this song more than justice.
Brilliant! You'd expect nothing less from Great Musicians! Great song! Great memories !
Just died and gone to heaven..The Moody Blues singing Across the Universe! Amazing
Wow! That brought tears to my eyes! Only the Moodies could pull off that outstanding tribute to John Lennon. As good as it gets!
How can you listen to this and not feel like crying?
Few songs well up my eyes - this one does.
The most beautiful voice in rock music.
Voices
This is one of John's finest songs and the guys did it just perfectly with Justin's beautiful voice, the orchestra and the beautiful surroundings...10 thumbs up.

I was 16 watching this concert and felt they rescued it.
The very best music that we can create as humans will be far exceeded by the music that is to come.....the key is to accept the free ticket to that show.
The Blue Jay's never ceases to amaze me with their talents. Excellent rendition.

Justin has a better voice than John Lennon had.

first & only time this song has been covered successfully ,these guys are awesome,
karl wills Rufus Wainwright does the best version of the classic. Treat yourself. The VEVO one.

Yes, and I've heard many.

Usually don’t like covers but , of course, they kept this song genuine and honored the Beatles with class!❤️
Fantastic!!!
Wow! The song was tailored for the Moody Blues it fits right into their universe.
And I thought only The Beatles could perform this piece of magic, but leave it to The Moody Blues to be able to master anything! I hate the R 'n R Hall of Fame!
They finally got in. Long time coming.
I think that even though the ending of their Induction was a "hot mess" due to the Hall of Fame people blowing it timewise and letting people ramble on, cutting into the Moody's time at the microphone, they took it with their usual grace. Brill. Beautiful rendition, as if it was one of their own songs
When you think about it, it could have been one of the Moodies. More likely one of their inspirations.
Fiona Apple did a great cover of this but no one can compete with Hayward and Lodge. Lennon would be proud.
Absolutely the BEST cover of "Across the Universe". Justin doesn't just sing words that were written by "someone else (John Lennon"), he is totally inspired to bring the full sense of what John's mind was creating when he was putting pen to paper.

*John Lodge also performs backing vocalist and guitar
Rufus Wainwright does a phenominal version - not as good as the Beatles, of course, but still amazing
Beautiful 😍
Beautiful cover. John would be proud
More than perfect
Beautiful interpritation of a John Lennon classic
Perfect. This made me cry. Thank you Blue Jays!
Perfect_____ John's music is timeless Gold😎
