    I work at a Powersports dealership as a bike tech and you’re not supposed to criss cross the pattern when you’re tightening clamps. The style clamp in this video is called a stepped clamp or pinch clamp. If you look closely one side of the clamp is thicker and one is thinner (stepped) you always tighten the thicker side first and follow up with the small side which pinches the clamp tight on the bars. The clamp in this video should have the thick side on top. Also there’s markings on bars and clamps so no needs to sharpie your bars. Just friendly advice!

    For bar position I remember years ago watching a video of a guy who sat on the bike on a stand, closed his eyes and swung his hands down 3x-5x. Where he was reaching was where he wanted the bars. I didn't describe it 100% but that video helped me a lot with my bar position. Great tips in this video as well!

  • @Papparratzi
    @Papparratzi 4 роки тому +5

    The part where you’re describing wrist positions with the levers is spot on and that’s actually how you should choose your bar bend and then bar position. Once those are set, then adjust the lever position.
    If you’re riding in the attack position and your wrists are tweaked inward or outward, you’ll lose strength, injure the joint and possibly go numb.
    Ask me how I know.

    • @a64738
      @a64738 6 років тому

      I stuggle even more with the clutch control on the big 4 strokes like the Yamaha WR450 with either stalling, or it run away slipping or go to fast because it has to much power to fast at even the lowest of the low rpm. Easiest bike I had for slow technical difficult terrain was a 2 stroke KX125 MX bike from 1983 and I almost never stalled that one and never used the clutch because it was just to hard lol.

      The modern boots I bought have no feel at all. I want to be able to feel my brake and shift lever, so I switched to a pair of Adventure boots, (TCX Baja GTXgortex). They are as protective as a good boot of the late 80's, which I raced with for a decade with no troubles, nice and light, but I would not want to get t-boned or get my toes sucked under the peg. Just doing aggressive trail riding now, and would want more protection for MX,---but I know I will crash less when I can feel the controls, so I had to add that in the safety factor too. You can separate a shoulder, because your boots are "sense less", like a lobster exoskeleton on your foot.

  • @EarthSurferUSA
    @EarthSurferUSA Рік тому

    The 80's was the "age of reason" for MX. The freestyle came along, rotated their bars forward for more foot/trick clearance,---and the entire industry adopted the freestyle bar set up. Go back to the 80s and early 90's bar set up and stop riding like a little girl in any corner with out a berm. Chase Sexton crashed at the last 2022 national, (the one James Stewart, "Bubba's World" did a show on, but even James missed the elbow by Chases side.) We are entering an age of irrationality, and nobody can explain rationally why the bars are rotated today. Not even Jean Michale Bayle. Irrationality,--is your future. My elbow(s) will never drop below the bar even with full throttle, because my bars and levers are set up properly now.

    The ends of your grips should be pointing down a bit, and their grips about over the gas cap as you look at the bars from the side. (pull the bars back!)
    This set up he is running is actually a freestyle set up,---that his generation adopted with out thinking for riding, and the entire industry, (new generation) adopted it with out thinking at all.. Reed some Gary Bailey for the bar set up with "reason".

    You know on the Pro Taper bars (that came stock with my 2019 YZ 250 2-stroke), and those number lines on the bar between the clamps? The numbers on the bar have a 0 in the middle, some likes to a number 2 on each end. People today set the bar up (rotating the bar forward), where the 0 is in the middle of the top clamp. Rotate your bars back so the far "2" is at the center of the clamp, and point your levers down by 15 to 30 degrees, which ever lets you keep your elbows up (sitting or standing, on the gas or off.) The level levers are nuts. Your brake lever is so high, for example, you get done with braking, can't "re-grip' the throttle because your finger is still on the lever, then you give it gas and drop your elbow to your waist. Good thing the baby tracks today are smooth. Look at the 80's set up and early 90's. It is like that for a reason The bars are high today because of freestyle.
    Your future is going to suck if you follow, instead of figure out why.
    Grip ends should point down, (nature hand position it was designed for), or level at the very highest. The grips should be over the gas cap when looking at the bike from the side of the bars. Now go see how much easier it is to get over the bars for things like flat corners. You will have much more control of the front end, and it is much easier to keep your elbows up.
    This is a freestyle set up, (for trick clearance),---and the entire industry (world) is irrational today.

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA Рік тому

      Probably not. You are not relaxing. Let me share a trick with you. Have you ever noticed that a rider can be super talented, and not even cross train, (Lechien and Bayle are 2 that come to mind). The reason is, when they got tired, they figured out ways to ride and not use energy, instead of hitting the gym. When they got tired, they figured they were doing something wrong and corrected it with their riding technique. That is how they got so smooth. #1 rule, if you are not relaxed, you are doing something wrong. :)

  • @db1988

    That is definitely not how to tighten your bars Honda wants u to tighten the front side of clamps then the side closest to the rider u should end up with the clamps touching in the front and a gap in the back

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA Рік тому

      That depends on how the clamp is made. For the style you are talking about, you can see one end of the clamp is longer than the other, and those are made to tighten the closed end, then torque the other bolts. But my clamps have no difference on the clamping piece, so I set them up with equal gaps (visually), and torque them down.
      Pssst---it is not the right way to set up your handle bars either. This is how stupid we are today: That is a freestyle set up that the entire industry of new generation adopted,---and they are slower in any corner with out a berm, and will crash more often.

    • @db1988
      @db1988 Рік тому

      @@EarthSurferUSA well to me it makes way more sense if top clap is all waY seated to the bottom clamp on one side less likely to loosen and it almost creates a hing locking bars in place. If u have space on both sides soon u get any loss in friction bars going to move way easier. But I digress any one tight your bars however you want .

    I have watched this video a few times, always refreshing to remember things for those of us who don't get to ride every day.. VIDEO SUGGESTION: can you make a video where you show the differences using and not using Traction Control (TC) in different scenarios? Like sand, hard pack, uphill dry, up hill mud or slippery, how does it affect for wheelies or jump landings or other things where TC can get in the way, if your recommend it or not and why and for how. Also on my KTM it has the MAP settings 1 and 2 (normal and aggressive). Maybe give general comments on it? I know the aggressive (2) revs up faster for sure but not sure if does affect gas consumption overall or wears out the engine faster if you don't ride to hard? For sure if you ride hard it does all of that but for novice's maybe not that much? Great vids, really like your channel and content... also hope to keep seeing more of the "pointing out" what went wrong videos and keep showing examples on your normal videos on the good way and the bad way with your arrows, circles, etc. Super good!!

      They use the same parts ktm and that are basically the same bike

      Got em in several locations on my FE 350
      Big on the inside of the exhaust, on the manufacturers vin tag etc.
      Basically, KTM is like Toyota. Husqvarna is kind of the Lexus. It has more expensive bling parts but the same basic frame and motors.
      KTM is wise in doing this.
      A huge part of manufacturing is the tooling cost. Using the same molds, wiring and other parts as well as suppliers, gives them a lower overhead. As far as EPA regulations, since the EPA bases how strict their regulations are on sales numbers, it allows them to stay in at lower numbers by splitting the brands while using the same tooling and plant.

    The Mx Factory why is engine kill on the same side as clutch out of reach of thumb ?

    • @TheMxFactory
      @TheMxFactory  6 років тому +1

      Because we don’t want to accidentally hit the kill button while riding.

      The Mx Factory dont you have to hold it for a second or 2

    • @TheMxFactory
      @TheMxFactory  6 років тому

      Yes, but getting it out of the way from your knee in a corner or any other body part is just a way to prevent killing it when you don’t mean to.

    hey tyler whats the point of tightening in a criss cross pattern?

    • @TheMxFactory
      @TheMxFactory  6 років тому +4

      +dunkin 102 When tightening bolts in a criss cross pattern you avoid tightening down one side of the clamp too much. If you only tightened down one side of the clamp, then the other side, the clamp may be uneven and leave the bars a chance to slip. So criss cross just makes sure the clamp is evened up and keeps the bars tight.
