I use to get real bad arm pump, mate told me to get a broom stick, cut it to the length of youre handle bars, drill a hole in the middle, put a bit of rope through it and tie a brick to the end of the rope, practice rolling it up till the brick touches the wood then roll it down till it touches the ground. I did it for a week and a half for 30 minutes a night along with 50 push ups. It will work. Just have to keep at it and you'll feel the results.
+Rocky Mountain ATV MC haha, sure is a cheap way but works! Keep going at it Chase mate, I'm learning a lot from you're tips and tricks, you're doing a great job - cheers, Jacob
@kali blast 4 - 1 I have worked out my entire life, I can do 1 arm pull-ups, free standing handstand press-ups, many power gymnastic exercises on the Olympic Rings etc and I'm also a climber yet I still get arm pump :-/
RM does marketing / advertising right. Free, quality knowledge - properly delivered and specifc tools to make life easier. That forearm stretch machine is amazing for health in general. Anyone with cold / messed up hands, creaky wrists and pain, that will make a massive difference instantly. You can also use tight straps like a belt.
I was thinking the same thing. Yes, RM is trying to sell stuff. That's their job. But these videos are actually informative too. And that's why I buy from them and keep coming back.
Dirt Bike Channel I’ve been riding since early 80’s. I used to read mags for riding tips. These are all really good tips. You present yourself very well in videos. Nice job.
I never stretch before riding. I bet it'd make a world of difference. My main focus right now is on body posture and clutch work in 2nd gear through single track trails.
Breathing is often overlooked. Its crazy how we hominids like to hold our breath doing difficult or strenuous things, like lifting heavy objects, or extreme concentration moments like playing a guitar at hyper speed etc. As the mighty Pink Floyd once said: Breathe...breathe in the air.
I've heard all my life that thinner grips are better for everything from holding on more loosely to arm pump. A friend of mine tried pillow tops on a whim a few years ago and liked them. I was very confused by that and was CERTAIN I would hate them, but out of sheer curiosity, I tried them anyway. They are now my standard grip. Not the Lite version, the full diameter version. Those HELP ME with arm pump and hand numbness. My glove size is 11 so your experience may vary, but everyone is different so if you haven't tried these yet, give it a shot. Could be the best $12 you ever spent. My new KTM came with thin grips and I rode with them 2-3 times just as a reality check. Back to pillow tops for me. The new counterbalanced motor helped a LOT, but the grips add to that improvement, just like they did on my paint shaker 2015 250 XCw.
Secret tip, get a stunt clutch lever like an “RSC”. They have slots for the cable that makes the clutch pull much easier. You will be blown away at the difference.
I use that secret tip too, have for years, I broke my cable though, and detailed why in a post above. If the set up is understood correctly, great tool. I don't know if mine is the same brand but its typical 3 cable position, short lever clutch lever, I love it..
Never even knew arm pump was a thing as a junior. Could ride all day and never get it. But then I got older and unfit. Arm pump for me is linked to fitness, get fit and you will have less arm pump.
Same with me lol. I warm up and do my two warm up laps then come back in and warm down a little and rest, let the blood flow go back to normal then I’m perfect for the rest of the day!
Yea i use the tail of the handle instead of close to the bend definitely a better easier grab I did it on accident adjusting controls and figured it out. But racing I only use clutch on multiple gear down shifts and start that's it.
Yea u right but factor in that the end of lever is usually further away from the bars anyway especially stock levers. So it may negate the better leverage if u got a slightly longer pull/ stretch or reach with ue fingers. If u have an adjustable leverage ur good tho
This is coming from a beginner rider..Thick car racing gloves worked well for me. If I wore any dirt bike brand gloves like ANSR or fox I’d get arm pump within a few minutes. Their way too thin and don’t take any impact. Also just holding on lightly with a gap between the grips and your hands works good too 🤙🏻
Main reason for armpump is that your fore arm diameter becomes greater or equal to your upper arm muscles locking the fluids in place. The arm is naturally designed like a funnel (golden ratio) and when u alter that design (motocross bike racing/grips/throttle etc) by increasing for arm mass the blood goes into vapor lock and doesn't know which way to flow, back or forwards, mixed with a huge influx of o2 that mass increases HUGE. REMEDY: do a lot OF upper body workout ie: upper arms, shoulders, chest even legwork. Also great cardiovascular work ie: jogging works great.
Clark Kent ha.... funny you say this, I have huge forearms and small biceps genetically - as I got older and added more muscle I seem to have struggled from arm pump. It’s such a shame because I know I’m a fast rider but the arm pump severely holds me back!
100% wrong. I’ve been an avid weightlifter for 14 years and I can guarantee I can outlift any rider at a Dirtbike race but I arm pump because of it. Big biceps triceps that you literally are training to pump using 10 reps to get bigger is one problem other is upper arms pump and blood is restricted to hands. When I hurt my shoulder stopped lifting my arm pump went away on the bike . When I started lifting again it came back. Also another thing when you lift weights you’re also training your grip to grip hard usually more grip than one would use on a bike and this also causes grip to fail as well. There’s a reason pro racers look like skinny twigs and not Arnold. Dirtbiking is all endurance. Cardio/strong heart will increase blood flow to hands best thing you can do
Good to know I went away from the Yamaha junk raptors and jumped onto a CRF 450R. Well I can ride a 700Raptor like no one's business well I didn't no much about riding dirtbikes I just figured can't be that much different well my 450R ended up putting me in the hospital with a shattered leg almost had a stroke aswell due to the swelling. I've learned alot from this video thanks for the helpful tips.
Nice road rash or dirt rash? I put friction tape like they use on skate boards on my gas tank works great !! And I cut the cuffs off my shirt and wrist straps on my gloves helped a lot . Great tips .
Old clutches are killer !!! I used to just forget about using it by the end of the day unless I was stationary, these new hydraulic clutches are a godsend
When things get 'frantic' remember to relax your arms. Make the OK sign with both hands. This will help you realize that it is rarely necessary to have a hard grip on the bars.
When I was racing I'd usually get arm pump in practice before the race. But after that initial onset I was good to race and it was no problem for the rest of the day. The fitter I was and the more riding I did, the less I got it.
Great job bro! I find that riding more often helps me to relax my grip too. Ride once a month and you'll lock up within a lap or two. Well, I do anyway....lol
Yeah exactly.. .my throttle hand was locking up on me bad the other day.. but i havent rode in a couple weeks.. if i ride 3 times a week or More i would adjust and adapt.. plus weather may have a factor.. warmer weather looser muscles and joints.. a bit chilly right now..
Tip 5 most important to know. Ride more on the balls of your feet. Stay in attack position for control and don't use the death grip. I hold on loosely and use full diamond grips and always keep a finger on clutch and brake to hold on better. I bought some PRO PEGS from rocky mountain so now I can just stand on it and ride with zero effort.
i got a 40 dollar clutch lever setup with a bearing in the lever and 3 diffrant levels you can put the clutch cable in and its lighter than my old bikes hydralic clutch and feels really nice.
See I get it more in my hands, I can go out and practice for 5 laps at a spirited pace but then my hands start locking up and I have to pull of and unlock my hands which is pretty painful, especially when I’m hitting braking/acceleration bumps.
I've never got arm pump but I stand up most of the time focus a lot on weighting and deweighting the pegs and leaning with them in attack position. I have a light clutch and focus on a light throttle grip so I don't over throttle over bumps.
A gentle grip and good hand position help, but so does conditioning your body for performance, in the gym and on the trail. Lactic acid (which causes the pump feeling) occurs mostly in the un-trained and under-trained.
riding with in your comfort level makes a big difference, i could do 45 minute motos when riding with other intermediate riders but half a lap of trying to follow a fast pro and my arms would pump up bad
I did my best on 125s and 500s, 250s always seemed to be one step ahead of me. Spent a small fortune on new front fenders, grips and handlebars from all the times id lose the front end of a 250 trying to ride it half way fast.
Its all about balance, i barely grip the bike, literally haven’t had arm pump in years. the more seat time you have, the more your learn to grip the bike with your legs, center of gravity back when braking, and forwards when on the gas. if you sit in the same position on the bike the entire time you ride... dead give away you arent doing it correctly. if your hands cramp up, SLOW down! Your riding beyond your means. The hardest thing for a new rider to understand is you dont just get on a bike twist the throttle, and hand on for dear life. ride a pace that doesnt make you tired, get bored with that pace, then step it up. after a year or so depending on how often you ride, you will comfortably be riding the pace you were once breaking your neck to ride. Skill takes time, not a fancy new bike with every bell and whistle, ride, ride, ride, then get more gas and ride! if its not raining, ride! Then youll develop the skills you seek.
Question..If you properly align your levers per the video..then when standing you are forced to crank your your wrists and dirt biking involves a lot of standing. Shouldn't the angle of your levers be at least a compromise between the two?
That really comes to rider preference. You're right, though, you want a compromise between the two. Some might like them a little higher, and some lower. I just wouldn't go too extreme one way or the other.
Only thing I disagree with is :Thinner grips require the muscle to shorten more for the same pressure which occupies more space in the flexor compartment which will compress the anterior interosseous artery and radial artery and provide less torque for the same amount of pressure thus less functional grip strength. That forearm string goes right over the digit flexors where these two arteries split and provide what we here in the Physical Therapy world call “tack and stretch” which is highly beneficial.
how about when your fingers lock up, i was going to pull my front brake then my middle finger locked up, then unlocked. How do you lessen the chance of that?
DirtBikeMC80 - try relaxing a bit, generally you have to think yourself into it. i have a load of bones ive broken, inc a lot of my fingers, and they lock up or go numb when i'm gripping too tight, and i have to stretch them out across the grips momentarily, and think my way into relaxing, breathe deep and adjust my body position.
At least for me. Bigger grips have always helped with arm pump. I run pillow tops, have for years. The bigger diameter is easier to squeeze then small diameter
Thanks for the reply, it Comes from the thought of, gripping something larger is easier than smaller, therefore you squeeze less because it’s easier to hold on. Like trying to climb a rope that’s a inch in diameter, compared to a rope 3 inch diameter. You have to squeeze more for the same traction
Anson Critchlow really? Yes for me. I ran protaper pillow tops because they have a good fat feelings. Really the best way to reduce arm pump, is to practice squeezing with your knees and having a loose grip on the bars. Being tense just brings it on faster.
My fingers on my throttle hand sometimes get stiff after a while and is sore when i straighten them or sometimes my theottle hand gets numb, what is that about
I rode the Pomeroy Memorial MX track on Sunday for a total of about an hour......gripped so hard with my legs I ended up with blisters on the inside of my thighs........great tips!
Im 14 and i ride a cr 85 and im around 5.11 and because im too big for the bike i get lots of paints from riding because when i stand im bent over any tips
Yes, you should always be squeezing the bike, even when cornering. How hard you squeeze really depends on the terrain, how rough and how fast you're going etc. The rider has the most control of the motorcycle when they are squeezing. If you're going through a corner, your inside leg, if out, should still be squeezing against the shroud and your outside knee should also be pressed up against the bike. Anytime your legs get away from the bike, it unsettles the balance and makes it hardy to control. Not saying I'm perfect at this and you see some top rides sometimes get their leg away from the bike but practice makes perfect! - Chase
@@rmatvmc Sir Chase thank u very much for ur reply. That means even during cornering in standing attack position it is necessary to squeeze the bike with knees, right?
One question I have is about finger resting positions. I use two fingers for the clutch and one for the front brake. I often leave my two fingers on the clutch ready to pull it in at any time. Could riding with fingers on the levers too long contribute to arm pump? Also, if it's relevant the type of riding I do is cross country/harescramble, like GNCC. If it is, then should I consider making myself a little more used to not using the clutch as much?
Hi Warren, thank you for commenting and that is a great question. Using two fingers on the clutch can make it a little more difficult to grip the bars and yes, that could lead to more fatigue. This is why most riders, but not all, either use their index finger or middle finger. There is nothing wrong with leaving your finger(s) on the clutch, I think i just depends on the type of riding. If you're doing slower, more technical riding and you need to pull the clutch in often, then it's easier to leave it on there. For me, I leave my finger off the clutch as much as possible and try to only grab it when I need it. The less you have to use your clutch means more clutch life, and you're carrying more momentum which is never a bad thing! Hope this helps-Chase
I know it’s poor form but I sit A LOT and only stand when I’m in the chop. Seat bounce about everything. If I get my arms exhausted I’m closer a whiskey throttle.
He chase , do you run or recommend a magura clutch ? My 18 crf450r is tough , bike scares the shit outta me scared It’s gonna get outta hand on me on day and will struggle pulling the clutch lol
Tall, forward bars can cause arm pump. It makes you hold on with your grip instead of weight shifting. However, tall forward bars make controlling the bike in technical stuff a dream. There's no free lunch.
Nice! That's a cheap and easy way to do that haha. Who needs a gym right? Thanks, Jacob!~Chase
+Rocky Mountain ATV MC haha, sure is a cheap way but works! Keep going at it Chase mate, I'm learning a lot from you're tips and tricks, you're doing a great job - cheers, Jacob

I bought my brother's ex-wife a broomstick for her next way of transportation🙊🙊🙊
Jacob Thomason I do the same thing ahaha
If you’re in the 6’1 or taller category, a tall seat and taller bars helps you maintain correct body position, thus reducing arm pump.
RM does marketing / advertising right. Free, quality knowledge - properly delivered and specifc tools to make life easier. That forearm stretch machine is amazing for health in general. Ditto for drums
Thumbs up for the giant elbow scab!
Tip 1 GET IN SHAPE
core muscles are even more important than legs when you have to ride in the center
Pro Taper pillow top grips did the trick for me, way less vibration.
Nice! Good advice right there!~Chase
Me too. I use pillow top grips and rarely have arm pump anymore

Slide the clutch lever close as possible toward bar clamps. You get more leverage this way.
Yea i use the tail of the handle instead of close to the bend definitely a better easier grab I did it on accident adjusting controls and figured it out. But racing I only use clutch on multiple gear down shifts and start that's it.

The surgery is called compartment release. You can also get it from jackhammering, cutting pipe with tubing cutters, or similar repetitive motion...

Natedoc808 so in stupid person terms, thicker grips=less arm pump?
I use light dumbbells to do forearm exercises. Stretching helps too
I noticed I stopped getting arm pump when I started wearing elbow guards not sure wether that's just a coincidence or not
Thnx! Very important things!
you bet!
I have me levers fairly low as I am stood up a lot of the time
Mainly for braking I always stand up with my weight back
Great advices ! Thanks a lot !
And most important.. :) do not forget about this tips when you ride 😊
Man jiu Jitsu and sports I guess helped me after the first week of being overly affraid. I've been cool now buy squeezing with my legs.
I've got vibration absorbers on my bikes hand bars witch is just a piece of carpet cause the clamps are 2 big for the bars
how about when your fingers lock up, i was going to pull my front brake then my middle finger locked up, then unlocked. How do you lessen the chance of that?
*DirtBikeMC80* I would take it easy on riding and go check with your doctor about that.
Thank you ✌
I get pretty bad arm pump when I first start riding the through out the day it just gets worse.
Knees squeezing in is KEY.
LMBC6Brian
I personally think thats the most important thing 👍
At least for me. Bigger grips have always helped with arm pump. I run pillow tops, have for years. The bigger diameter is easier to squeeze then small diameter
You must be the exception haha. Usually bigger grips cause arm pump for most riders. But hey, if it works then stick with it!!~Chase
Really??

Great tips
Sir chase, is it necessary to squeeze the bike wid knees even while cornering standing?
@@rmatvmc Thanks, this was helpful.
@@warren9962 You bet. Go try it out and let me know how it goes.
When I always got the first lap down arm pump was just a killer. But about a hour in it just kinda goes away
hydro clutch is one of the most satisfying feels
I know it’s poor form but I sit A LOT and only stand when I’m in the chop. Seat bounce about everything. If I get my arms exhausted I’m closer a whiskey throttle.
On my first race my arms were so sore
He chase , do you run or recommend a magura clutch ? My 18 crf450r is tough , bike scares the shit outta me scared It’s gonna get outta hand on me on day and will struggle pulling the clutch lol
A magura will definitely help with your clutch pull. You're right though, the CRF450R clutch pull is terrible. - Chase
Pedialyte the night before, water the day of. Same think I do for sport bike track days.
I remember racing my 125, the first moto was so intense I always got arm pump. Second moto was better. Oh well.
Tall, forward bars can cause arm pump. It makes you hold on with your grip instead of weight shifting. However, tall forward bars make controlling the bike in technical stuff a dream. There's no free lunch.
