- A New Hampshire man spent two weeks in jail and still faces felony charges after Hertz accused him of stealing a vehicle - a vehicle the man says he properly rented and paid for. CBS News' consumer investigative correspondent Anna Werner reports.

I keep hearing so many stories relating to this company about Hertz customers getting detained for theft. If this is coincidentally happening to so many people, why has this business not become inoperative at this point?! You don't hear stories about enterprise or budget rentals customers stealing vehicles, but everybody wants to steal from Hertz?! This is set up by design and I pray that no one else becomes a victim.
yes, its VERY strange. And once a customer produces paid bills, bank balances, email exchange and renting contract, he should be left alone, its soo easy to clear. Is there a pattern? Of dumbness? is it hackers working there? And still, police troopers are dumb enough to treat the suspicious people as horrible as they can. In Europe l ike in US, the suspect is considered innocent until proof of guilt, but they do it all the other way round? Thats a real horror movie.
The usual statement from Hertz doesn't make sense anymore when there's always new victims coming forward.
I cant believe they extradited him across the country for a misdemeanor.
They probably charged him with grand theft which is a felony

Cancel your Hertz membership folks. This has been happening around the country. I have AAA, and they recommend Hertz, I’d rather spend more money on Enterprise or other than Hertz.

These behaviors by hertz are NOT uncommon. I know, I was an employee of hertz. I know their tactic’s.
So, do they have some kind of secret deal/relationship with the cops, prosecutors and judges in your town? That's the impression I got when I was arrested on a warrant for "embezzlement" while sitting in the rental car at 7/11 two blocks away from the rental company. It wasn't Hertz, it was the other famous one. Right after they charged my card for another whole week rental fee and made arrangements for me to come in the next day to resign the documents. Who's embezzling who? Very bad business model. So, when did the consumer protection agency stop protecting consumers? Is that why they got dismantled? Good.
... but whats the point of locking up innocent people, please? Who wins by doing this? If the car is registered "stolen", insurance would pay in the end. But the cars are safe in hands of paying customers who are then locked up - how does THAT work out? Whats the AIM? Pleeeease, do not let us all die uninformed.

Unfortunately this will keep happening until police start to be held accountable for not doing some basic investigation before arresting people, a stolen vehicle report from a rental car company should not be handled the same as other stolen vehicle reports.

Hertz needs to be driven into bankruptcy.
Bcuz what they are doing is not illegal. They are using the law to their advantage. By filing a police report, they have transformed the police into 'repo men" without actually paying for such service. Instead of spending monies on lawyers to bring a case against a customer, the arrest by the police have caused the Prosectors now to become Hertz lawyers (free of charge). Hertz gets results by gaming the legal system: a return of their vehicles, a lesson taught to their customers not to mess with them & monies kept in their pockets. This was a win-win situation for them until ppl started to fight back.
@@poohbita88 what they are doing is not legal....it's false reporting and false arrest...it's a crime period and they have done it for years now. Next your going to tell me it's OK for HOA to illegally make false claims so they can steal your home... is legal too?
@@SmileyD7777 If at the time they made the report to the police, the vehicle was overdue & not in their possession, then it is LEGAL to report to the police that the vehicle is stolen. Hertz cannot control when the police actually act on a warrant to find the vehicle. Hence, why some of the reports is that Hertz reported the vehicle stolen 6 mths to 1 yr ago. They are at fault for not cancelling the stolen report after getting it back n then renting to a different customer.
I've never rented from Hertz but I honestly wouldn't now. I can see the pain in his eyes and I would never want to go through something like that myself, that poor guy is going to need therapy for years.
How about charging Hertz with conspiracy? These customers did not commit any crimes. The company did!

It's terrifying to think that I could spend weeks in jail just because somebody else falsely accused me of a crime.
This sounds like it should be a minor claims court process but they turned it into something grotesquely Kafkaesque. If I have to rent a car it's certainly never going to be from them.

So instead of admitting to their mistake, Hertz is piling on by dredging up issues and charges that are not in any way related to the warrant that Doucette was arrested for . You gotta love their lawyers. Looks like they subscribe to the old adage that the best defense is a good offense.
The logistics of it are mind-blowing. Doucette, prolly with a paid airline ticket from Florida back to New Hampshire, his home, gets a ride on Con-Air to Arizona instead. In Phoenix, 2000 miles from his home state, he spends all of one day before the local law shoves him out of the courthouse, and leaves it up to him to find his own way home. What a country!!
They sent a certified letter,Great! show us the receipt. State attorney's, Governors etc etc need to have a standing order to stop arresting people for car theft from car rental companies and instead write up a summons to appear in court and prove their case.
Of course Hertz denied it, they have denied all accusations against them.
Well as long as people keep renting from Hertz , this will continue to happen. STOP renting from them.....simple !
The FBI needs to be involved in this. They need get a warrant for their emails, files and every bit of paperwork immediately. They are clearly using law enforcement and the court system when it should be a collections issue. Even then, they are going after the wrong ppl. There needs to be a freeze on any stolen car reports by them similar to those that file a large number of frivolous lawsuits.

I'm really surprised Hertz is still in business. Makes me really wonder if there is someone in their upper management who is clearly acting in a criminal manner, and someone(s) is getting bribed to keep their mouths shut. By now they should have a ton of huge lawsuits against them and lots of public distrust that they can no longer pay their operating expenses.

It’s not only Hertz; it’s the overseas representatives that handle these notifications and alerts on Hertz Behalf. Hertz as a corporation but they have people overseas like on the Philippines, El Salvador, and all these other foreign countries that’s St. Paul on their behalf and handle all these claims and sometimes they don’t process things correctly because of the language barrier. I worked in a call center overseas and I have seen where agents have a hard time understanding people or they don’t know what to say so they raise their hand and ask for help. If anybody was trying to contact the driver, it was somebody from overseas that obviously never even got through on the phone and they put that they tried calling them.
I have never rented from them and NEVER WILL.

I came to hertz pa to rented car. They asked my credit card and also my license. They worked on document to rent but they pool the rental car in front of the rental office and hand me the key told that ready. Without hand back my credit card and also the driver license and documents for rental.
So if you get arrested you can't just bail out right away? Shidddd I don't ever want to go to jail.

They told me return their vehicle on such address I arrived to the specify city and state and I could not find their rental place. I make phone call no one pick up the phone. I searched back and forth on the same road for 1 hr. Later I found their place it was locate in the fairoak mall. I found their store but it looks like they closed for fixing. Later I and my sister returned the car in the next day. But it was not the store in Fairoak mall. They did set the table outside their store. And they did charge me the X Tra day for late return

Why does Hertz hate America so much?
Hertz has rental locations in Europe, Asia, South America plus a few other countries where the citizens of those countries were also accused of theft. So, it isn't that Hertz hates America, this is not a case of hate, it's pure fraud, globally.

An enterprise stole $3700 in rental charges from me which turned out to be criminal neighbors behind it!!!!
For a car I didn’t even rent! I had already paid my rental bill in full and had the receipt to prove it.
When I threatened to sue they said you’re too late! We already put back the money; so u cannot do anything to us.
The checking verified the money was immediately returned.

@@1truek269 because I was able to trace the theft back to my neighbors who stole papers records and documents from my house. Their race doesn’t matter to me. The Hispanic neighbors worked thru a Hispanic connected to them at the car rental. They believed I was rich and that I’d never notice the stolen monies.
