Being a farmer, I would think the hay bale got too hot for the potatoes. That is what caused the rooting and splitting. The bale broke down way too fast.
Not surprised....i love growing in bales, however, with root crops, it's hit or miss. You should remember that straw bales hold a lot of moisture/water plus they produce heat for a long period of time...that's what i believe caused all of that.
I lived in Columbus for a while It was cold! I’m no professional potato planner. But I do know the soil probably needs to be around 70°. Sweet potatoes love the hot weather. Thanks for watching!

The tomatoes seem to like it till the point choked them out

How can you tel when the sweet potatoes are ready to harvest, I thought they had to die down like potatoes

You can let them t try in till first frost
Or give them roughly 90 days
