MY AWFUL Air Canada Business Class Flight *Silenced by Cabin Crew*

  • What happened on my Air Canada Business Class Flight?
I flew on AC's new new 787-9 Dreamliner on red eye flight from Mexico City. I'd be excited to try this airline, as i've never had a chance to before, but unfortunately quite a few things went wrong. Here is my account of what happened.
I was silenced by the crew, told I was not allowed to film, provided a sub par premium experience and made to feel very unwelcome. This is not what I expected from North America's best Airline...
I want to give a special mention to the ground crew which came to check on me in the terminal, to apologise for the experience I had and to offer me food, snacks and Air Canada merch. An excellent example of how to rectify a poor experience, I just hope that mentioned service improvements will happen on this red eye flight.
Thankfully I still managed to offer a comprehensive review of this flight, but had I not pushed back or made my concerns public on my IG then I feel this may not have been the case.
Next flight up, I'll be flying onboard their 777-300ER in Business Class, and without giving too much away, it was a completely different experience. Let's hope what happened today is a one off. My other concerns today were with the soft product provided, no bedding for a night flight, breakfast served at midnight and overall attitude towards taking photos (not in line with other reviewers).
I hope also to try their Signature Business Class, their YYZ suites (lounge) - but managed to get a tiny sample on my next flight of what their concierge service is like.
As always let me know what you think to my flight down below.

Air Canada has always been horrible. Had to fly with them many times but the absolute worst incident was when I was continuously refused service on a long haul flight in 2006. I asked for a cup of water and the attendant said sure. She came back, proceeded to serve people around me. I saw she was walking away and said "sorry, is my water on the way?" She said "I'm sorry, yes I'll get it." She never came back. This was when personal water bottles weren't allowed on flights so I was feeling very thirsty by that time. About an hour later, meal service came out and everyone was served but me. It was a different crew member handing out meals. At this point, the passengers around me were like "serve her first, no one is helping her even though she's asked many times." It wasn't until then that I was finally helped. The crew member even said, "you're so tiny, you blend into the seat" when she came back! What difference does my size make? I was 5'5 and over 120lbs lol The passenger next to me even said she'll go to the counter with me once we land as a witness if I wanted to file a complaint. This was before social media.

A younger attendant wanted to help her but the older attendant stopped her. The passenger was so helpless, so I went to help. I was annoyed at this point. Then the older attendant thanked me. I told her off and said it’s her job to help passengers. It’s not like the passenger was being entitled. She really couldn’t do it. It might’ve been a work safety thing, which I get, but we all know passengers sometimes need help. It makes no sense. Its a customer need and they don’t provide that service. @@kingcoong Perhaps Brian Wied will explain further, but essentially they are "everything is wonderful" reviews. This video actually shows a couple of seconds of screenshots of uploads by another reviewer (but I won't mention the location in this one) with less useful content. But this video points out, starting at about 8:17, that he himself wants to give us an accurate insight, rather than an advertorial. That helps customers decide where to spend their money (or where not to) for the best value. It also can help airlines see specifically where to improve their service and attitudes if they want to keep customers. Everyone wins that way. (Except in the cases of government-run airlines who don't need to keep customers because there's no competition.) The paid reviews, paid for in cash or simply free flights, are far less useful. They never point out the downsides, because they want those free flights to keep coming their way. If you watch a review where everything is sugar coated, that's a channel to avoid.

So last year, I flew my family of 5 to Morocco, with Air Canada. After I purchased the tickets, the scheduled aircraft changed. I had already paid extra $110 per person for the seat selection, but because it was a different aircraft, the reassigned every seat, and our seats were scattered around. Then I called the customer service and asked them to put my family together, but was told wasn't possible cause they have already reassigned the seats and the flight was fully booked. Obviously, I asked for a refund, but again was told that Air Canada can't refund service fee's, only can issue a credit to use in the future. So at the end of the day, I had to pay $550 for the seats I couldn't even choose. Talk about customer service...

You wrote this a month ago but as someone who used to work in the trade I must tell you and all others that seats (numbers) are never guaranteed and this is part of the T&C’s and Conditions of Carriage when purchasing. What the airline guarantees is that they will get you from A to B but not the specific seat number you choose or pay for. This is one of their most vile monetising tricks but a lot of people are happy paying hundreds for no guarantee whatsoever. With some airlines, depending on how many layovers or stops your flight has, it is actually cheaper to go Business Class…

When Fort Mac in Alberta was being burned down by forest fires. West Jet was evacuating people for free. Taking pets and everything without complaint. Air Canada doubled their ticket prices. Not true at all. West Jet was NOT giving people free flights. Air Canada actually flew larger aircraft than WestJet (Boeing 777s) delivering supplies and evacuating people. They even honored WestJet tickets held by people who got stranded. Air Canada also was able to fly into the smaller airfields and evacuate people from them with their smaller aircraft types that WestJet doesn't have. The ticket prices only got jacked because the computer booking system was suddenly inundated with people buying up tickets from Fort Mac and it automatically increases prices when there's a sudden surge in demand (Westjet's system did the same thing) They corrected the problem right away and charged people the original price.
Honestly, the main difference between the two airlines? Air Canada didn't brag about it on social media the way WestJet did. WestJet even took credit for Canadian North's evacuation flights.

The truly gutting thing is that for every traveler who happens to have enough followers/fans/subs to be treated nicely (once they realize who the traveler is) there are 10 000 people without a large following that they treat like crap, and these people never get any apologies or the treatment they deserve, as paying customers.

Was on an Air Canada Flight from Palm Springs to Toronto. Air Canada Rouge! One of the flight attendants screamed at a passenger because he was hesitant about moving his belongings from the over head bin. Too many people had brought everything they own on to the flight and they needed more space for the BIG bags. She threatened to remove him from the aircraft if he didn't comply with the 'orders' we had been given. I addressed the issue with the Steward. He did speak to the passenger. I don't know what transpired. I hope they gave him free flights for a year or two. I also wrote to Air Canada Customer Service-an oxymoron and did get a reply. I try to avoid using them if I can. I fell out with Air Canada back 1994 when during taxiing the FA told me to remove ear plugs as the captain does not allow them, I told then they were part of an Air Canada travel kit but she insisted as they would blank out announcements, I did explain we were having a conversation with me wearing them so what was the problem this stumped her for a second, so I explained there also used in construction and would be banned if they didn't allow instruction. Now she was confused even more, but she walked away. The captain spoke to me on disembarking and said I could be banned for not following FA;s instructions and I told him to just ban me and asked for his name he saluted and walked off. I just saw this video and was amazed, because I too had my absolute worst flight experience on Air Canada, similar to yours in a tangental way in terms of the 'breaking the law' threats and it appears that it was around exactly the same time you travelled, when things were opening up. I will NEVER fly them again. I'm a long time, experienced traveller and had to go to Toronto via London Heathrow on Air Canada. I care about public health and I was masked and had all my vaccinations and all the required paperwork, and I read the requirements to make sure I was fine for Canada. Checked in at London Heathrow, no problem, nice ground crew. Interacted with maybe six or seven Air Canada employees while checking in, document checks, baggage, as well as gate crew. All fine. My trip became a nightmare on the flight. I was flying in coach. About three hours in, I got thirsty and so got up and walked to the rear of the plane, where water bottles and snacks were laid out near the lavatories. I took a water bottle and was heading to my seat when a flight attendant suddenly appeared, angrily barked at me to sit down, telling me I can't get water myself because of COVID, did I understand there is a global pandemic? I was pretty taken aback by the tone and fury- I apologised, and explained that since it was laid out (and it usually is for customers to self serve during long haul flights when crew may be having breaks or otherwise engaged) I mistakenly assumed it was intended for self service. As I headed back to my seat, with no water, she stopped me & then told me that my mask wasn't regulation and I was no following Canadian law. I was wearing a washable mask with filter, the type that I had been wearing all through covid. I asked her, with honest curiosity, what was a 'regulation Canadian mask.' She started lecturing me that my mask was a fashion mask, but I pressed her, calmly, asking where the rules were about type of mask, because I truly did not want to be breaking any rules. She escalated, and escalated, and escalated, and then three other flight attendants came to the back and I explained that I was just trying to understand the rules. I asked her why none of the six or so people I'd encountered on the Air Canada ground crew said nothing about my mask, or I would have changed it immediately! I then also asked, calmly, if I was being singled out - because there were several people with things like Liverpool masks and non medical grade masks on, and cloth masks sold at the airport. This just infuriated all of them, and I was cornered by an angry group of flight attendants determined to take whatever frustration out on someone, even though I was just trying to understand the rules. I went back to my seat, literally afraid of them, and then took out their temporary mask provided in a brown paper sleeve, and put that on, because I figured if I was wearing a mask they provided, it must be OK. I fell asleep. Two hours later, a flight attendant came up to me to tell me that I was 'breaking the rules' because it was not bent tight enough around my nose. It was so absurd that I realised this couldn't be about a mask at all. After all, I was sitting across from a man, who, across the aisle, was asleep with his mouth gapping open and his mask slipped off! I took a picture of myself in my mask and sent it to my partner, asking if he was seeing something I wasn't. No idea what I was talking about. I thought about putting the incident it on social media (Internet on the plane) but then thought better of it, I was so terrified by the threats of 'breaking Canadian law.' and a gang of angry, passive aggressive flight attendants. I just couldn't get off that flight fast enough. I must say, seeing how rude - and uncomfortable they made you feel with the threat of 'breaking the law' gave me a flashback. Even more gross is how rude they were to you until they realised that you had a following and then coming up with such an insincere, over the top hokey PR response was also infuriating! I'm glad you showed it. Thanks for that, and thanks for all your great posts for travellers.

It was many many years ago, but I flew once on Air Canada as a child. I was separated from my mum and sister so was essentially flying alone. I was 11 and was emigrating from Scotland to Canada, so was already feeling quite low and scared. I was treated terribly by the flight attendant. Luckily, I was next to a nice elderly couple from England who took care of me as my mum was only able to make it over from her section to check on me once. Another passenger offered her close by seat to my mum. Flight attendant would not let them switch...I have flown many many places since then on other airlines and never had an experience like that again. I never have flown AC ever again though, never will. I find it even worse that once they figured out who you were they started treating you well. So fake.

I remember 10 years ago I was catching a flight from Ottawa to London. As I approached the airport - maybe 15 miles away - I saw a MASSIVE storm rolling in. Dark skies, thunder and high wind could be seen in the distance. When I got to the airport - I checked in as usual. I cleared customs and awaited my flight. As I waited - I was told my flight would be delayed. My flight was supposed to leave around 7 and it was around 4.30 in the afternoon. I waited - and looking out the window - I could see TONS of planes accumulating outside as they could not unload passengers due to lightning. No gate was announced for my flight and no news was given to me about my flight. I waited until 3am until I was told my flight was delayed until the next morning. When they told all the passengers they were going to delay our flight - they made sure the cops were standing by to keep us in line. Unfortunately at this point it was 3.30am and the new time of our flight was 9am. I had no time to get to a hotel so had to sleep at the airport. If Air Canada had told those on the London flight that it would be delayed until the next day at 7pm - we could have all gone to a hotel and rested. This would have been an easy announcement to make as there were SO MANY domestic flights waiting to be unloaded.
I have since flown them a couple times since and can say Air Canada never misses an opportunity to disappoint.

As a Canadian and frequent air Canada flyer I can say that air Canada has some of the worst customer service I’ve seen. I paid for a seat with extra legroom 3 months before my trip but they switched the plane 20 days before departure. Not only did it remove me from the extra space seat on a 6 hour flight but apparently they can’t do anything about it when I call and they still haven’t answered any of my complaints to customer service for a refund. I hate that they have a monopoly over Canada
