    This is fantastic. I'm terrible at spatial recognition, but really loving X-Wing. Stuff like this doesn't register for me until I see it (and even then not as much), but the explanation means I can use it without seeing it. ;)

    In regards to the large ships, when the smaller ship is following the bigger through a turn (ie: ends up behind the big ship) the idea that the big ship "moves faster" doesn't matter because the way the big ship moves faster is by the front of its base moving an extra smallship length. Wile the smallship is behind the big ship, the place to be concerned with is the back side of the big ship's base, so in effect it has moved the same distance as the back of a smaller ships base. Food for thought

  • @Tennethums1
    @Tennethums1 9 років тому +3

    For the bumping of the ships (or the table for that matter) I bought some of that thin, spongy shelf liner (also used in toolboxes to keep tools from sliding around) and adhered it to the bottom of the bases with double sided sticky tape. Gives the ships "grip" on the table. Works like a charm. The standard thickness is perfect - lifts the ship's base off the table just a tiny bit but when it comes time to maneuver, you just put a little pressure down and the maneuver template will still work without going under the base. Feels solid and is a life saver if you enjoy a little libation while playing but want to protect yourself from sloppy play. 😜

    Just to clarify and reiterate other people's points about this, there is no "crashing" or "colliding" into ships. If your ship's base overlaps an enemy ship's base at the end of it's maneuver (they're right on top of each other), it cannot target it. Ships can pass through other ships when making a maneuver, and ships can shoot through other ships. They cannot be used as "cover" or a shield. The only thing ships can crash into are asteroids, which only deal one hit and take away that ship's action.

    Thank you so much for this video! I've only had one intro game before picking up the starter set this week (and having a game by myself at home to get the rules to sink in better). I'm going to show this video to some of my friends who are getting into the game as well I think it'll help us all.

    Good job with the video, very informative (although anyone who has played the game will have worked out all this already within their first few matches). One small point of contention though. The big ships don't have larger bases because they move faster, rather they have more mass and therefore take longer to overcome their inertia.

    • @alexanderpedranti6278
      @alexanderpedranti6278 9 років тому +3

      Barry Stroud It is actually because they are bigger so they need a bigger base to keep them stable and support their weight.

    It's not possible to "bank" your ships in the same maneuver . Think of it as a train pulling it's rake. When the train turns, the coaches don't turn with it. If your planes need to bank and follow the flight pattern, the first ships will execute the turns as you showed but the back ships will have to fly 1 space straight. On the next turn, your back planes will turn as your front ships but your front ships will then only move 1 space straight.
    This means that squadrons are not as agile as single fighters and turning can be tedious and slow. I guess that's accurate to what a real battle would be like since individual ship in a flight pattern has less space to maneuver and can't really dodge enemy fire without crashing into friendly ships. A squad of Tie-fighters will easily be outflanked by a band of rouge X-wings. The trick is to know when to break up your squad and keep them in groups of 2.

    Fyi for people time traveling from 2021 and are confused about some of the 1.0 movement rules, you could fly through your own ships in 1.0 - this was removed in 2.0 and you "bump into" the ship and move backward along the move template.

    Very well done and thought out. The only thing I'd mention to try and fix the video "flashing" is you probably have one of the colour settings on automatic. Changing that will most likely solve the constant changing of colours when you're moving around.

    This is why the star wars franchise is very realistic: If you want to be a commander, you play x wing the board game, if you want to be a starfighter pilot, you play playstation vr x wing mission rogue one, if you want to be a jedi, you go to disneyland/disney world and go to the trials of the temple, or you buy the lenovo lightsaber training, or you can just buy a lightsaber and train with it.

    you can set up turns more easily if you set up not in a rigid square formation - but kinda like the aperture of a camera lens... slightly offset in a kindof loose diamondy square... still can be pretty tight..

    I'm sorry but i think i need some advanced tips. How do you continue to move your squad after the first hard turn? Do i get it right, that its impossible to stay in formation with banking movements?
    A documention of 3 or 4 turns in a formation would be nice. Is it possible to keep them in formation, even if they have differend polot skills?

    Thanks a lot for that video. As a beginner in X-Wing I really appreciate. BTW I think your video is flashing because it tries to adjust automatically the white balance. So every time your arms get in focus the white balance might be adjusted. Setting a fixed white balance might prevent flashing.

  • @Techt
    @Techt 10 років тому +1

    At about 11:13 you say that you don't get an action after crashing into another ship. The instruction says only that if ships bases touch each other then those two ships cannot shoot at each other. It's never said that you loose an action.

    • @Techt
      @Techt 10 років тому

      Christopher Schraner Thanks for the explanation. I'm using polish translation of the manual, and I just found that there is this step missing.

    • @Kriterian
      @Kriterian 10 років тому +3

      That is incorrect, they DO lose an action. See the rule below from page 17 of the guide:
      "If a ship executes a maneuver that would cause the
      final position of its base to physically overlap another
      ship’s base (even partially), follow these steps:
      1. From the opposite end of the template, move
      the active ship backward along the top of the
      template until it no longer overlaps another ship.
      While moving the ship, adjust it so that the
      template remains centered between both sets of
      guides on the ship’s base. Place the ship so that
      the bases of both ships are touching.
      ]2. Skip this ship’s “Perform Action” step."

    Cluster missiles wants to know your location 😏

  • @Gamingnight
    @Gamingnight 10 років тому

    on the shart bank on 13:04 you would still run into bases. according to the ruels it states that at any time you are moving your bases overlap you have to back it to where they are not touching. so for you to do it without bumping the pilot skill 1 would have to be on the right side where as the 4 would have to be on the left side. and of course the 6 could move in any order.

    • @kingpinda2
      @kingpinda2 10 років тому +3

      Sorry Gamingnight you are mistaken. Page 17 moving through a ship. ships can move through space occupied by other ships without penalty;its assumed that the ships have enough room to manuever in 3d space.
      Just like when your template clears an asteroid you dont have to trail the base over the template to see if the ships base hits an asteroid. Its only when at the end position your ship overlaps an asteroid or other ships base that you take damage or have to move your ship back and bump it at the nearest available open space against the other ship.

    • @kingpinda2
      @kingpinda2 10 років тому +3

      Rory Boyd To be more correct however i have to add that only with asteroids, if your manuever template overlaps an asteroid you do take damage and lose your action. But this rule applies only to asteroids. not other ships.
