The 586 and 686 are what killed off the Python. They may not have been as pretty but they were more durable and had better triggers.

Not true on the "trigger" but you are right. The Python trigger is second only to a Smith model 17 in 22lr. At the time people were like why the frog would I pay for a python when I could get a better made lower cost 686. Then Ruger came along. The security six and the GP series are the best most rugged revolvers ever made that at the time cost less than both. NOW ADAYS THEY ARE ALL OUT OF THEIR FREAKIN MINDS IN THEIR COST!!! Having said that when I had the money the first thing I bought when I had the seven hundred plus dollars was a 686 Plus!! LOL

I’m retired army. Up until the early nineties in aviation we carried revolvers. Since then I have carried Glick beretta and 1911’s. I keep going back to revolvers. I’m in south Louisiana where we pretty much wear tshirts year round. We have hogs and coyotes. I carry a sw 66 in town and in the woods. I have never felt undergunned with it. 2 3/4 bbl and six shots. It saved my ass in New Orleans Shoots and carries great

Just picked up a 686 plus 3 inch and carries great and like it better than the performance center 686 7 shot 2.5 " I had previously. That little bit of extra barrel length adds balance for carry as much as just makes it look cleaner overall with the standard L frame and full underlug. Thanks, Chuke!

Hey Chuke! I bought a 686-6 last April. I got a Diamond D cross draw for it. I already had a Guide's Choice for my 4.2" 45 Colt/45ACP Redhawk. I use Garrett 420gr hardcast Colt 45 hammerheads for the Redhawk.
I love this gun! I flipped a coin between it and a GP100, I believe I would have been just as happy with another ruger, though. Zero recoil with 38s, the S&W plugs the 357s all day long. I was thinking about going to a Hogue rubber grip, as the "plus" grips are so long. Maybe I'll try a shorter Altamont G10. This summer, the black bears were swarming southern Colorado, along the Rio Grande. I alternated taking the two guns out with me fishing, and with some Black Hills 357 honey badgers, I felt just fine with the 686. Thanks for the videos!

@@Tex_I_Can Oh yeah, I was able to take it home. I'll never let it go seeing as it has no MIM parts and no Hillary hole. It still hadn't had the "M" upgrade so I sent it to Smith for that and they payed shipping both ways and the overall cost to me was zero. Pretty square deal considering the gun had already been around for 25 years or so by that point and could have had numerous owners by that time.
I just scored a first year production (1972) Smith model 67 a few weeks ago. Pawn shopping for me is like panning for gold. There's a lot of shifting to get a nugget but when they show up, it's generally a fine ingot worth all the patient labors of regular visits.

I have attended a few classes and other than the practical accuracy and weapons handling I just sit there and watch everyone else have fun. Good times no doubt, but not real helpful for someone in my situation. I will say my accuracy is pretty good if I do say so myself. So hopefully I'll be able to put shots on target before they hit me.

CHUKE....LISTEN...Stealth Gear makes a IWB series of holsters in that blade-tech type polymer for large sized revolvers. I ordered one for my 686 plus and at first I thought no freakin way will I carry that beast but then I actually tried it all day and also carry at about 3 o clock and it's freakin amazing. The key is the holster. People assume revolvers are sucky to carry for comfort but it's the opposite. The thickness in a revolver if carried IWB is the cylinder which is in line with your pants line not on your love handles or hip bones and like you said the grip goes away from your body instead of poking right in like the butt off a semi-auto so there is that natural cant. I'm a big guy and the only firearm I own that I can carry Appendix is a j-frame style revolver or a sucky too small back up type gun like a .380 acp.

I carried a 686 for EDC for a short time, it was more of a classy gun than practical. I carry a Glock 43 now or a Glock 19 and for EDC, more practical not a classy looking gun like the Smith. I used to also carry the S&W 642 with +Ps, that is a great EDC plus dipped into my wheel gun love. To your point the 686 is very great EDC if you don't mind the weight, the 357 magnum has few equals for defensive shooting, plus in a nice leather holster with the right grips it's down right sexy.

Great discussion video Chuke as I have been looking at that exact gun, however wondered if the 3 inch would still work for wilderness purposes for protection and be nicer for CCW with 3 inch, even if it may not be legal for hunting as most states require 4 inch. And 7 shots doesn't hurt. Should be able to shoot any rounds you want in it. Good to hear it is comfortable for EDC and shoot heavy duty rounds in it. Thinking about a fiber on the front sight? Saw one an a Ruger 3 inch Talo edition and it was great for those of us that have older eyes. Thanks again Chuke!

In recommended a friend last night to buy one for his first firearm. I purchased the Talo edition, nice wood grips, I had to change them as the frame was biting my hand under the recoil. It needs an improvement in the front sight, something fiber optic but robust and and a bobbed hammer as I prefer DA as there is no real scenario I'm going to be cocking it in a self defense situation.

You have to understand that the 357 Mag ammo back then isn't what it is today. Lets just say contemporary ammo is a little watered down just like 10mm ammo is. I called the Smith and the Wesson company and the girl on the phone said this revolver has a double life time warranty and sent me a box with a return label on it. That means the Smith and Wesson company will warranty this gun and they stand by their word

That case would be either .357 mag or 38 special

Hell my old model 13-2 is still valid as a self-defense weapon
It's obviously not the most efficient choice for self-defense weapon, but it will do the job

Altamont stocks are nice, but you should try Herretts Stocks Jordan Troopers.

    • @tomrkba4685
      @tomrkba4685 Рік тому

I should elaborate. Their specification came from Bill Jordan. Chapter 7 of “No Second Place Winner” describes the spec in detail and Herrets met that standard with the Jordan Trooper. The stocks work equally well for speed shooting of defensive loads and for slow fire of heavy loads.

i would use underwood extreme penetraters as much as possibleconsidering the video chuck did a couple of months back he had a lot of trouble with 357 hardcast lead and i believe they were underwood seems liked they have trouble with gewtting the hardness right the extreme penetrater is always dependable

I would love one. Prices are just crazy now. Carrying a ruger gp100 in the woods for black bear defense but it is a six inch and sucks to carry.

  • @buddyringo21

I have the gp100 4” and now I think I will buy that S&W 686 plus 3” and do the hammerless option like yours as I buy guns to carry. I have the sp101 in .357 mag in 3” and it’s perfect for conceal carry but 5 rounds leaves me wanting so I think this gun you are showing is my next bang stick! Question , have you had any issues of rounds binding from being so close in the 7 shot cylinder??

If you get a malfunction , look under the star for ANY bits that should not be there . A tiny bit of cloth or paper under there will make it fail .

Bought the 4 inch to long for edc traded it for the 3 inch love it would almost like to try the 2.5 inch just worry about the shortened ejection rod on the 2.5 inch I don't know may try it anyway and just keep the 3 inch as well really pleased with it

Jorge Flores was just wondering I shot 180 grain hard cast in mine some . have seen some tight cases due to the fact of full power hot loads didn't think the short ejection rod would see the cases all the way out was told it wouldn't don't know it to be factual but just what I herd while I've got you on here have you shot the 180 grain hard cast in yours thanks for any help you can give

The 3" 686+ comes with a fluted cylinder as shown in the video or an unfluted cylinder.

Must definitely 686 got a place in these times of modern semi auto pistols . 357mag is old stand by

The US Customs Service before they finally went to auto pistols… they had the “CS-1” 3” and 4” 686 and they were Allways thought well of it.
Yes, its still just as valid as in the 1980’s
The guns you might face hasn’t changed much since 1985 and neither has bad guys or Apex preditors.
