When Los Angeles private eye J.J. "Jake" Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is hired by Evelyn Mulwray to investigate her husband's activities, he believes it's a routine infidelity case. Jake's investigation soon becomes anything but routine when he meets the real Mrs. Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) and realizes he was hired by an imposter. Mr. Mulwray's sudden death sets Gittes on a tangled trail of corruption, deceit and sinister family secrets as Evelyn's father (John Huston) becomes a suspect in the case.

A timeless classic. Featuring Nicholson at his absolute peak.
Being on Netflix now, I’ve finally seen this movie for the first time. Absolutely brilliant. Possibly the best Jack Nicholson performance I’ve seen.
Glad you lied it. I saw it fifty years ago when it was released. It still holds up. Timeless film.
@patrickc3419.....not sure why it has taken you so long to see this film - I first saw it when it was originally released in 1974 - but good to hear that you enjoyed it. For me, it is in my 'top 5' all-time favourite films, and I have it on DVD and video, the originally released [vinyl] soundtrack LP by Jerry Goldsmith as well as a number of [extremely collectible] black and white promotional still photos.
It is without doubt Jack Nicholson's finest ever film [which includes work such as '5 Easy Pieces' 'The Last Detail', 'The Passenger' and 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest'] and I am convinced that Nicholson himself knows that. [he tried to replicate 'Chinatown's' excellence by directing and acting in the very disappointing 'sequel' - 'The Two Jakes' in 1990].
Robert Towne's absolutely superb screenplay [which is actually recognised as the greatest screenplay of all time] is simply mesmerising. Combined with Roman Polanski's expert and deft direction and excellent performances by the stellar supporting cast [Faye Dunaway, John Huston, Perry Lopez et al] 'Chinatown is a total masterpiece.
OOh yea, Polanski had a way of squeezing out the best actors
In 1974 I was ten years old. I first saw Chinatown on TV in 1978. A brilliant story about water in an unstable environment. A timeless movie that never goes out of date!!
your 50 years old
How is this movie timeless when it’s Literally set in a very specific time in history
@@rubbencaldderon8034 not the brightest bulb in the pack are ya?
A MASTERPIECE of a film. From the costumes, the hair and makeup. Everything about this film was done to perfection. The actors are at their prime and Roman Polanski's directing is masterful. One of Hollywood's best films. Personally, I think it's the BEST film of L.A. in the 30's.
I thought Polanski was the director not Huston?
@@DennisNedryisStillAlive I stand corrected. It "was" Polanski. Just shows you.......
Still one of the best movies ever made imho.
Hold it there, kitty cat.
@randywhite3947 lol
One of the best films of the seventies which is saying something. Three excellent performances, Nicholson, Dunaway and Huston.
Not just seventies, Chinatown is one of the greatest film ever made.
One of the best films of ALL TIME
this thing contended against the Godfather Part II in 1974 for Best Picture
If there's ever a film where I love every second, it's this one.
Try memento.
@@cothinker680 try schindler's list
It's weird to think that making this movie set in 1937 then would be the equivalent of making a movie set in 1984 this year.
Wouldn’t be worth the effort would it.
Jake's last case.
YES IT IS WEIRD... Like the reverse when Prince would sing 1999 in 198X and when 1999 eve came most young people were like 'who is Prince and what is this song?'
It's actually 1974.
@@checkpointfilms It was released in 1974, but the film takes place in 1937.
I can watch this movie over & over again.
The greatest screenplay of all-time.
All About Eve
Network.
Chinatown and L.A. Confidential: Two of the best film noirs ever made about Los Angeles or any town for that matter.
Its a shame how basic instinct isnt celebrated as much as these two, really captures the essence of san franciso
Reno 911 actually true also
..." Your Husband keeps lousy company people ...As bad as there is in L.
A. ...And that's as bad as there is ....
@@LYCANCLANTEAM How about " Fatal Instinct "
Let's not forget The Big Lebowski
Each single shot is to enjoy endless without being bored.Just incredible. Polanski is the utmost badass in cinema history.
You already sound bored.
one of my favorite movies. So 'true' and Faye Dunaway + Jack were phenomenal . corruption lessons still ring true
A girl like you is better than that.
The very original soundtrack here, which was replaced like a week before the movie opened. Changes the entire way you view the flick, IMO. It was changed for the better. Great, great flick; an absolute masterpiece. Library of Congress stuff.
One of the best movies ever made...with outstanding music ,/ background score.. thanks for sharing..!!
Rest in peace Robert Towne..........awsome movie
The 70s were not a great time for Americans but it produced some amazing films. This, Taxi Driver, Dirty Harry. They were cynical and bleak but utterly brilliant.
I'm starting to think, the shittiier the times get, the better the filmmakers. And if that's true, we are in for a ride in the near future
Also THX 1138, The Godfather, Alien and Jaws!
Apparently they had more creative freedom then.
The one who flew over the cuckoos nest
Why weren't the 70s great for Americans? in fact, when is there a time that's not great for Americans? lol
never old this gem
One of Matt Reeves inspiration for The Batman, ironically it has the Joker in it haha.
The Batman is very clearly influenced by this film
I wanted to see what this movie looked like after watching Batman
Something in the way playing in the background
This really put Roman on the map and enabled him to become a star and get parents to trust him with their young and even prepubescent daughters. He’ll of a director that filthy pedophile…
The opening scene in the trailer matches the opening scene of The Batman, so definitely seems like an inspiration.
1937...this is the year Jack Nicholson was born on
2:00 I can really see Matt Reeves inspiration for the batman here
Lmao
Hhhhhh
This made me laugh way more then It needed to hahaa
I'M VENGEANCE!
Love Chinatown. They should have skipped the sequel (The Two Jakes) and instead did a prequel so we'd learn what happend to Gittes as a young cop in Chinatown that made him who he was.
I love the music in this trailer. The piano music especially. It’s very evocative.

Jack nicholson legend
Happy 50th Anniversary. 20th June 1974 is the release date.
Hard to believe a half century has passed.
Nicholson is Badass 🕶️
fun fact-
Jack Nicholson (Jake Gittes) is present in every scene of the film.
Damn really? I don't think so. I love this film and am imagining it now....will have to see it again..no way he's in each scene.
@@playstationaccount4473 Yes he is. What he is not in, is every shot. But, where he's not in the shot, it's from his point of view. The entire story is told from Jake's point of view, and he is an unreliable narrator.
Thank you so much
I love this movie so much I thought the twist in it was great
Couldn't figure what the hell was going on until the end of the movie, best thriller I've ever seen!
@@johnnyquest6115 ik right the director Roman Polanski makes a cameo appearance in this movie
@@joeymartinez9854 I know, he did it better than Alfred Hitchcock ever did!
@@johnnyquest6115 I wouldn't go that far
My favourite movie 😍
Feeling sorry for those who watched this trailer before the movie
It really doesn't give anything away, it just seems like it once you know the story. I saw this trailer in 1974 and then a week later saw the movie, and was totally blindsided by the ending. In 1974, we didn't see that coming. We all walked out of the theater in silence, taking it in. Very few films do that to people.
@@lemorab1 That was my reaction too. It left me stunned.
The Road to Hell is paved with good intentions the movie.
Yeah, pretty much. The whole thing is about how Jake fails.
James Hong appears in this movie as Evelyn's butler but I recognized him from the Seinfeld "Chinese Restaurant" episode as well ..........Seinfeld......LOL! Cheers!
Lol. Me too
I find the ending somewhat gut wrenching... I think I am traumatised from that movie (first time watching it last night)
How old are you?
Yes. Very cynical movie. That's the point.
Not even close. You should watch Hereditary, now that's traumatizing.
why is that?
....una " obra de arte"..!!!
Rest In Peace Robert Evans
JF read His Autobiography The Kid Stays In The Picture (I believe it's called?) Brilliant
One sad aspect of this film is that Towne conceived it as the first in a trilogy. The second part, “The Two Jake’s” went through much conflict and only got mixed reviews on release (I thought it was great) the third part was to be titled “Gittes vs Gittes” and would’ve dealt with the building of LAX. Now with Towne’s death we’ll never see it
R.I.P Robert Towne
“You can’t handle the truth!”
If chinatown was remake today -
My opinion -
Director -David Fincher
JJ Gittes- Leodicaprio
Evelyn Mulrey - Rosamund Pike
not a remake but a continuation.the sequel in 1990 was bad.but a better continuation would be great
@@johnjackson7045 David Fincher himself said he will remake it
@@quddus0079 cool
@@quddus0079 hope he change the ending, as the original movie ending was polanski idea rather than the true script ending
@@kaeltkottmir The ending made the movie.
This movie one of my list of favorite movies, with "The Dark Knight", "Citizen Kane" and "Star Wars".
Predator and The Thing. Alien.
Lmao citizen kane is a favorite of yours? Wonder if that's because you actually.enjoy it or is because of others...
@@vthekingv Both. And I wanted to see because a spanish philosopher reccomended.
@@vthekingv I watched Citizen Kane to see what the fuss was about. It's good..but it's not the greatest of all time. I liked it enough to see some of the appeal; but to say it's the greatest? No. I don't think so.
The dark knight isnt very good
Pro Tip: If ever you are watching an old movie for the first time, DON'T watch the trailer past like 50% or you might spoil the endings. Just get a taste, then go watch it. I can't tell you how many 30s-70s films I just saw that the trailers gave away too much.
Dunaway is splendid. Huston the perfect ogre.
Did they ever redo the trailer with the soundtrack that made it into the movie??
No, they didn't. That was a far superior soundtrack.
The Batman new trailer brought me here. Matt Reeves is all about this movie you can see it all over the Batman trailer watch this movie if you haven’t it’s epic .
That was jack and faye's Oscars dammit! Joan Crawford
I thought it was Jack and Joan that playing here lol
I immediately searched for this after seeing a reference from family guy's new episode
Wht was the ref...wht was the ep
"Forget it jake it's just chinatown..."
"YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH"
Sad that the old chinatown was demolished😢
The new Southpark specials are based on this. Giving a nod.
Is this the original trailer that shows the whole movie? Is the narrator Eddie Barth or Lionel Standing?
Playing with infantrymen...goodstanding.
I hate watching a commercial on top of another commercial.
Mein geliebter Roman Polanski,
ich freue mich RIESIG auf Dich!
The batman led me here
Nice movie, but trailer seems funny bcoz it tell some story, but according to me, Faye dunaway should win best actress but she missed it m guessing, eventhough she later wins in network
Watched it recently.
What's the name of the music in the first 30 seconds?
Hey Jack Nicolson
This trailer gives way too much away.
Where to find this movie Netflix Amazon or UA-cam please help anyone

Buy it lol
Own this one---you'll need to watch it many times to 'get' it......and it's worth it every time.
Currently on Netflix

Forget it... it’s chinatown
Name the Movie Star on the wall that Jake has in his Office.
Does anyone know the name for the music with piano in this trailer?
It’s Philip Lambro’s original score for the film. It was junked after the test screening went so badly, but it’s actually a masterpiece (it’s available commercially now). I think for contractual reasons, they had to keep it in the trailer.
@@davidsolomons1110 Thank you so much!
Joe Swanson brought me here...that's Chinatown...
Can someone explain me why Evelyn's daughter was seeing her husband? Like why? I didnt get the point of that and how and why happened? Also shes like a child in the movie. Its a reallly good movie but didnt get that part
Is the movie good to watch? Looks interesting though
she was 15 at the time she ran away (probably pregnant)
Anyone looking in now and drawing parallels to the water shortage and fires in LA Jan 2025 ?
Yeap
Forget it jake, its chinatown
Looking at jack here reminds me of Timothy olyphants face
Where’s the Chinese??
I love this perfect movie. But this trailer is awful, and it gives away too much. Should not have revealed the nose slice or shown so much of the end.
Great film despite it's sad ending ....
The film is great because of the sad ending.
this and motherless brooklyn shows why we need a Director, a proper one
Steven Crowder sent me here
Travis Callahan irony since he’d probably be hired as one of Noah’s goons
2:00 you will never ever see that in Hollywood movies again lol. Any depiction of male on female violence is scrubbed from existence
Anti- Chinese ads oh boy !
The Best/Worst movie ending ever. I'm not sure who I dislike more Noah Cross or Roman Polanski!
I like to watch old movies using boxxy software. Anyone know about that app?

Roman Polanski was just getting even with Jake’s nose for what Tex Susan. and Patricia did to Sharon and her friends
Long trailer = long movie?
The trailer is long mostly because it's a movie from the Seventies, and at the time trailers were basically short movies, but yeah, Chinatown is two hours something long
This is what happens to stupid people who ask smart questions and smart people who ask stupid questions
You be ev knight ride assignment with your north
One of the worst trailers ever for one of the greatest films ever.
this is a great trailer
I agree. But it shows that without Jerry Goldsmith, it would have just been another movie.

Good trailer vs average movie 🤔🤔🤔🤔
It's one of the greatest movies ever made.
This ending is so stupid and evil that it is unforgivable. So far from a realistic event that it is only to traumatize the audience. Shame on you.
It's a Goddamn Noir, you fool!
Los...it's pronounced Los.
grammar is hard.
No matter how many times i watch this movie, it's still slow and boring
Back in the days when you could hit a woman.
Sheesh
dont forget the back up hero's wife had bruises on her eye, the guy who towards the end of the film was asked to drive off when Jake brought the cops to his house.
First
What an average movie. I don't get the hype. Other Polański movies (even the lesser revered ones, like Bitter Moon) are at least 6million times better than this snoozer.
faye dunaway always play vicious, corrupt, disturbed y troubled characters. i think she has typecasted herself into these roles. y for what benefit. how does this help her grow as a person.
Looks like an interesting movie but why is it named Chinatown and I haven't seen a single Asian person. At least put one Asian person in there even just for it's namesake!
