      Absolutely - your insight would be fascinating to hear, particularly if it could be compared to a similar "Earth-bound" historical precedent eg Afghanistan or, more relevantly Vietnam (hidden indigenous faction whose logistics and fighting style is at one with their environment and the local populous) with it's asymmetrical factions. In fact, imagine a COIN version of dune!

    Thanks for your thoughts, I will definitely be keeping both games. For those wanting to get friends involved in the 6p version, Conquest is a great introduction to do so. If they are having fun and enjoying the play, are also much more likely to be willing to give the "advanced" version a try.

    Honestly, missing the formalized alliances kind of sinks it for me. I own and played the original AH Dune several times and loved it. But yes, we had some 6 hour, 4-player sessions but the alliance making and discussions (private, in another room!) made it such an immersive experience. Maybe this version is for people who didn't enjoy the diplomatic thrills of the original game. AH, such great gaming memories...

      I think, with the movie tie-in, they wanted to make it more accessible to a wider audience. I really enjoy it.

    I love both versions of dune, this version of dune is good for people who hate the long complex game of the original dune, this version is perfect for beginners. And you can use this game to introduce the more challenging original dune

    Both Dune game have its place.
    As you mentioned, the new one is shorter, works with less player and streamlined.
    Altough, the 2019 version is a big epic game like Twilight Imperium.
    It works perfectly with 4 playe but better with 6.
    It have its own flaws, and harder to put it on the table. Maybe you will only play it 1-2 time per year (we play it 8-10)
    But you will talk about it after decades.
    I mean we still remember our first ever game where I was the Bene Gesserit and one of our player almost won the game alone with 4 strongholds. I was the only capable player to stop him, so I have swarmed 3 of his strongholds with my army of advisors (only 2 player can be in a stronghod) what I have flipped to the warrior side. So he took one hold what I left to him, I have beat him to death in the first battle, I barely loose the second and in the third battle I dialed a 0 and played a cheap hero and he won, because he had 3 strongholds.
    Everybody was confused and after a few second he said:
    - You son of a b*tch you just tricked us! You have predicted that I will win in this turn!
    And I was like:
    - You are smarter than I tought... little human...
    (BG can predict who will win in what turn, and if it's right the BG player will win instead)
    Once Atreides have nuked his own army with the Emperors in Arrakeen turn one and he was proud to himself, and the Emp was:
    - You know that I will have a lot of money in the next bidding phase (Emp gain the spice from bidding), but you should have your army to harvest spice you know...
    Visual confuse on the Atreides face...
    Btw Emp have won that game in turn 5 xD
    And because of these moments the game is legendary, just like TI.
    It is complex, not without flaws, it is a bit long (btw wit experienced players 6 player is 1.5-2.5 hours), but it is one of the greatest board games ever made.
    Justblike all big epic game.
    Oh, and Cody, did you tried it with the expansion?
    And the second expansion is comming.
    Try the game with them before you sell it ;)

    I love the every time someone talks about dune they they play the original David Lynch dune soundtrack, I still believe David Lynch's dune is the best dune movie ever made, I don't care what Frank Herbert fans say. And I am also a fan of the Syfy miniseries of Dune too. I really think the new dune remake is really unnecessary and really if it wanted to start a new franchise should have just told the whole story of dune in one movie. That way we can actually start seeing Messiah instead of dune part 2.
    But anyways with my rant over with, I love the original dune board game, but I also love this version of it too because it's a good starter for beginners and for people who don't like the complexities of the original game, this version of the game is friendlier for people who don't like complex games.

    Hi Cody. Great review as always. My thoughts would be to keep both games. The old version for the epic nature of it when you have the player count and this one to scratch that Dune itch when you only have time for a "quick' game. I would be interested to know what you think about the components quality and the graphic design. Gale Force 9 tend to disappoint me it those department. Thanks again.

    • @TheDiscriminatingGamer
      @TheDiscriminatingGamer  2 роки тому

      A lot of people are not fans of screen shots, but they never bother me. The graphic design here is right from the movies, and I thought it worked very well. As far as the other components go, I've got no real complaints. They didn't wow me, but neither did they detract from the game at all. And the battle wheel is always fun.

    Yeah… That’s my issue: Do I get this and tank the 2019 Dune? I love the 2019 game, but it really does only work at 6 players, takes a long time, and can feel super swingy with the asymmetry of the factions… In short, it’s difficult to get to the table, much like TI. This appeals as a truncated, streamlined version of that game for less players, less time, and just easier to get to the table. It saddens me to say it, but I might have to ditch the 2019 reprint.

      The original was one of the first games I played and I was pleasently surprised with the reprint at a very affordable price. Also, it has a nice place in my collection to fill a complete afternoon with five other passionate gamers. It also does not take too much shelf space ;) My advice would be... keep it! Love the 100% bearded version, btw :)

      Its VERY hard to put diplomacy in a game mechanicly because if you do your forced to do diplomacy it ends up like Ankh and everyone shits a brick lol. Diplomacy is very much player driven.

    • @hanng1242
      @hanng1242 2 роки тому +1

      @@rmcdaniel2424 I agree, but it can be done. I thought Rising Sun did it pretty well since it let allies share the full benefits of the respective mandate that each ally chose, thereby encouraging alliances. I think that Mistborn: House War and Court of the Dead: Mourner's Call also did it well by having a shared short-term goal the penalizes everyone if not fulfilled, and only benefits those who contribute.

    Curious on your opinions on Dune the movie. Hopping its not the same drama that UA-camrs are brining up about the original being better even though most people thought it made no sense. I went to that movie when it came out. They gave you a sheet of paper that explained what the characters names are because they didnt say it in the movie, which is funny because then they will say the new dune movies characters are not fleshed out enough. Seems like UA-cam vs outside of UA-cam is two COMPLETELY different worlds. I am shocked that part 1 is as entertaining as it is. This is spot on with the book and part one of the book is BORING! LUL. I always trust your opinions and would love to hear them on it!
