Advice from a very experienced mom. You do not need half the things they say you need for a new baby. It's their job to make you think you need it so you spend your money. Case in point. If you have a good dishwasher, you absolutely do not need a bottle sterilizer. The dishwasher will do the job! Wipe warmers waste of space and money. Save and invest in baby board books.

I agree. The one thing I did use non stop and then later used as wash rags was thick Chinese cloth diapers as my burp rags. Worth every penny.

I agree!! I did not have that stuff. We boiled tbe bottles in the Dutch oven pot on the stove. No microwave either. Put bottle in small pot of water to warm it up. Had nothing extra in kitchen but bottles. Used cloth diapers and they doubled as burp rags.

Agree with all of this! Only comment about boiling bc a lot of bottle companies actually now advise against boiling bc of the plastic pieces.

We could not do without our bottle sterilizer, it was a lifesaver. Everyone is different, every baby has different needs. My advice would be to not stock up on everything straight away, wait to see what you do need. You can still go to the shops with a newborn! And online shopping is of course convenient.

Having raised 4 children of my own, and having littles when we did some remodeling, you are very wise to do your big kitchen remodel before your baby comes. My Dad used to say babies are 25 hrs a day and 8 days a week 😂

100% to redoing the kitchen before the baby comes. I just had my first baby in October and we replaced our kitchen counters, some cabinets and sink right before he came. It was stressful that it was so last minute and I was too big and tired to help much but I’m glad we did. Having a nice semi-new kitchen was everything for me with a new baby 😊 and there is ZERO time for anything other than taking care of him and myself haha so yes do as much as possible before

My son in law is a contractor and he always says count on a job taking twice as long and being more expensive than you thought. I sure hope it all goes smoothly and is done by the time baby boy comes. Take care of you during this sweet time.

Always Kathy. Maybe 3 times longer for renovations because they underestimate time to get job’s. My grandfather was a great contractor & built his own beautiful home & taught me everything he knew at a young age ! I am so grateful after owning 7 homes 2 of which were newly built! Prices in California are in line with Northern NJ outside NYC 45 minutes.

McCenna, have you heard of the elastic hair tie hack? It widens the opening on your pants, so you can still wear them even though technically they don’t fit when they’re zipped up. If you pass the hair tie through the buttonhole and through itself so it’s attached to your jeans, you just twist the other end around the button and it will hold your pants up. Just wear a longer shirt to cover everything. I hope that makes sense. 😄 You can also buy a belly band. I think that’s what it’s called. It’s a wide elastic band to go over your waist area to hide your tummy if your pants are open if you’ve done the hair tie trick and your shirt is shorter. You could probably get some material it make one for yourself as long as material is stretchy you should be fine.

    • @Thedeans716

Also works postpartum! Legs back to normal but belly not quite? Two hair ties it is!

  • @leeleescraps
    @leeleescraps 4 місяці тому +35

A trick I did while pregnant with my elastic pants was wear them backwards. The bum fits the bully really good and with button pants I used a hair elastic through the whole & loop over the button & just put on a very baggy long shirt over it. I couldn’t afford maternity clothes and only had a few outfits that were loaned to me for special occasions.

Best to get the kitchen done pre-baby boy arriving. Newborns are energy sucking bundles of love. And you can only orchestrate so much. But you, Romeo and Kingsley will make everything work. Cannot wait to see Kinsey’s reaction to little brother. Such exciting times, savor them. Yep, y’all could have done without the flooding~big hugs

Check your insurance policy. Most people who live in California do NOT have flood insurance because it rarely rains. Here in Michigan, we lost everything. In Michigan, you have to buy a separate flood insurance policy and because we don’t live in a flood plain, we never bought it. We also have to have a separate policy for sewage backup. In 2021, 60,000 homes flooded in Metro Detroit area. Very few homes had either the flood or sewage policies. Most of us suffered devastating losses.

As a former claims adjuster, unless you have flood insurance it is unlikely you have coverage for this type of loss. A broken pipe, yes, frozen pipes, yes, but not flood unless you have a flood policy.

I think you are cutting it fine to get the kitchen done before the baby comes as jobs always take longer than promised, but you should get the bulk of it done, at least all the dusty messy bits. It will make such a difference to your house though and will be a spectacular room with windows on 3 sides and a view out to the pool.

  • @Quiteinfamous

The kitchen remodel totally makes sense because babies take up so much space and are the center of the home. I can just see you guys having so many cute moments in an optimized kitchen rather than one that gives you two so much stress. Also thinking of all the family that will be moving around your house once he comes and your current kitchen is not conducive to all that movement. So excited!!!❤❤❤

I would recommend getting a Bissell little green machine for spot cleaning and water extraction. It works incredibly well for spilled bottles, and potty training accidents. We have a 100 year old wool rug and we run through plain water with no extra chemicals when we need to clean it up. So far so good!

As a mum of 3 boys just remember you don’t need all the bells and whistles, as long as the baby has somewhere safe to sleep, has clean dry clothes and is fed they will be happy. Sometimes we get caught up in what is available because there is just so much now but most of it we don’t really need. The nursery is going to be beautiful and I’m so excited to watch the kitchen being remodeled too!

Taking out the stuff I could no longer wear really helped me mentally/emotionally. After the baby it was like Christmas pulling out my clothes. I was so excited over things I’d forgotten about. But really, your body changes fast, things are uncomfortable, you’re uncomfortable, you do not need to dig through “the cute things you can’t wear 😭” to find something that makes you feel good (and fits right, doesn’t irritate your skin, etc.)

Be careful with the insurance. Even if it would be covered (doubtful at $500), they literally hold it against you. Your premium could go up. Think about a minor car wreck and how it jacks the premium up. Its a balance.

Plus, it starts a whole chain of thought re: mold and I've heard of insurance companies even dropping people for this. And it gets entered into the insurance clearinghouse and finding anyone to cover the home becomes nearly impossible. That was a few years ago so perhaps this isn't an issue any more? But I've always heard that unless it's catastrophic damage, you never approach your insurance company and utter the word "water"...

First, and foremost you must get drainage put in your patio so this doesn’t happen again. The way things slope down to your house are going to be a nightmare. It should have been done when the pool was put in, so I’m guessing it’s an older pool, since the house is? Yes, it will be expensive but will save you so much stress. The pool pump should also have a valve to actually drain some water out of the pool, when you know a big rain is coming. You got this!

The most important thing is to get it as dry as fast as you can. Easier said than done. But squishing it is the best method to getting it dry. Has to lay flat to squishy though.
A lot of pressure needs to be had.
My brother worked with Asian rugs, and he said to clean them, so they don’t shrink, is to lay flat, so you can shampoo with delicate shampoo, and soft brush, but the most important is to get it dry fast.
I did it one once, and we laid it out on the driveway, sprayed it down with a pressure washer on delicate setting, then shampoo, and rinse, then, most important is to squishy it down.
You can then lay it over some horse things “a ma gigs” sorry forgot the name, but something to lay on to get them off the ground for air circulation.
My huge Asian rug turned out beautifully.

Idea! How about having a beautiful brick wall built in front of you back door area? Not high at all. Maybe 2-3 ft high and have it curve towards the side of your house so the excess water runs away from your house. And you could have your roof line built out past the new little brick wall so water doesn’t pour into your house? Doing this could be a fix!

Hey sweetie, couple of things for you. Don’t forget your thrift stores for maternity clothes and baby clothes as well as equipment (sad to say baby’s don’t stay baby’s for very long) you’ll be surprised the bargains you can find. I absolutely agree about the kitchen it the heart of the home and where you’ll spend most of your time in one way or another. I had an idea for your candles if your interested, how about a glass ring holder? The candle can be around the holder part (inside the candle) and slowly reveal itself as it burns. I saw one in the charity shop (I’m from England) and thought instantly of you and the candles. Looking forward to all your adventures love to Romeo and Kingsley ❤

Take a garden hose and laundry washing soap bar and clean the rug with some soft brush or vinegar and water to disinfect . Use just cold water because of wool so the natural color of the rug don’t start mixing up . Love your work and blogs, all the best ! 👋

I would never claim rug on insurance. Your insurance will go up extremely high! It is worth it to clean it for only $500.00. I have my orientals cleaned once a yr.

Late coming into the discussion. You absolutely did the right thing with the rug. We had our main rugs (3 large ones) cleaned when we downsized and moved into a smaller home and they ran about $300 each. They're a bit smaller than yours and had normal dirt and wear, not the kind of extra damage your rug has. It was an excellent investment because we really like these rugs and they look great in this house. A beautiful rug, especially a unique one like the one you have, is so worth preserving. And yes, having experts do it makes the most sense.

MaCenna…you might want to consider getting some Moo-Moo’s to wear on the days you don’t have any errands and you’re not working on your latest projects.
They offer freedom of movement, comfort and easy access for what is sure to be frequent visits to the bathroom. lol
Also you might consider scrubs, as they are comfortable, expandable, and relatively inexpensive. Hope some of these suggestions help . Looking forward to the nursery reveal.

Great ideas. I wore the same pinafore dress with no sleeves and buttoned shoulders, with different tops underneath through my second and third pregnancies. It's still in my closet and I'm 79 next month! 😊 It's grey gaberdine so very durable, but it saved me a lot of money on maternity wear.

So excited to see that your kitchen renovation is going to begin! I thought it was going to be much further down the road. Babies change everything, don’t they. As an aside, I don’t know how you get anything done. If I had Kinsley, I wouldn’t be able to do anything but cuddle and play with her! She’s so special!

When you redo the kitchen you should think about making the base of the cabinets into drawers. I had never seen it done until years after we redid our kitchen. They will be shallow draws but great for so many things and the. The space doesn’t go to waste.

We get a lot of rain in England. French drains are a good way of diverting the water away and down hill from the house. You're right Macenna!, the way the pool area steps down to the house with insufficient drainage is a bad design. Could you have a French drain installed along the perimeter at the back of house that is at risk of flooding? A French drain, along with the sandbags at the upper level could work. With this crazy, unpredictable weather, what if you were away in Texas or somewhere? Great plan for going ahead with the kitchen before baby arrives. Maybe, while the contractors are there and all the messy demolition work is being done, they could also install a french drain? Just an idea, I also wan't to say that you are brilliant and amazing!!! You have been working so hard on so many project's, well done you and Romeo. Sending love from across the Atlantic.

In my experience you dont need the fancy baby machines that the other comments are mentioning, however if YOU want them and want to try them you should! As a first time mom there are inevitably going to be things you end up not using or thinking you couldn't live without! Also I am so excited to see your kitchen remodel!

I’m three weeks ahead of you in my pregnancy and I’m going through the same thing with my wardrobe right now! I have one pair of maternity jeans and refuse to buy more because you only wear them for a few months! Even though this is my second baby it just doesn’t seem worth it to buy maternity clothes, so I’ve been wearing lots of sweats, and when it’s warmer I love my maxi dresses!

So glad you are doing the kitchen before baby comes. That will be a huge weight off your shoulders!
We are having our retirement home built and I have been saving pins forever when I find those "a-ha!" ideas. Storage and organization for the kitchen is huge and one you might want to consider is replacing the toe kick under some/all the cabinets with shallow drawers. These would be handy for baking sheets, holiday linens, etc. thus leaving more upper cabinet space for other items.
Just a thought; I know whatever you do will be fabulous! Congratulations!
