I enjoy the pace of your delivery. Nothing is rushed or hurried.
It sounds like you have a car, or other vehicle. This is a bit unusual compared to the other expat channels I watch. Many of them don't have a car and use a motor bike (which seems very hazardous to me), or they hire pedicabs, etc. One suggestion for a video(s) is the pros and cons of car ownership there, costs, how one buys a car and gets it serviced there, insurance, etc. If I've missed a video you produced on this topic, please let me know the title.

Hello @Fred Drake ... thanks for your feedback and your comments. Yes, I felt like having a car was more a necessity having kids. It would be doable to get around on a motorcab, but with the kids, its just not the most practical or convenient. and YES, great idea to do a video on having a car. just buying a car in the Philippines is a process, but is well worth it as far as I'm concerned. I did put out a video on my side-channel (I'm currently in a holding pattern on that channel) but it's a good video discussing shipping a car to the Philippines vs buying a car in the Philippines. ua-cam.com/video/6g0f72djpXM/v-deo.html I would appreciate if you let me know your thoughts on the video, as well as the premise of the channel. Offering Philippines news that is of interest to Americans or other foreigners.

The reason is mostly due to stressful driving in the Philippines. Imagine someone used to controlled western driving environments. Think how pissed you get when someone is unpredictable, cuts you off, doesn't signal, weaves in and out ect. Now imagine EVERYONE drives like that. Id rather pay a cab to take me where I want than deal with the fact that my car is most likely to get scratches and dents on a weekly basis.

@@kajuta240 😆 Oh my goodness you are SO RIGHT about that! Well, that was part of my reasoning for buying a used vehicle. And it has its battle scars for sure. I might make a video walk-around of my car and tell the battle stories. 😂

This video really gave us food for thought. My husband and I are considering retiring to the Philippines in the next 12 months or so, and hiring a helper hadn't even occurred to us. Just running errands would be such a huge blessing. We're grateful for your insights! Now if somebody could find us a nice western-style apartment someplace near the water, we'd be all set! 😂

      Hello @
Dana in Dallas ... ABSOLUTELY! 😀hiring a helper does a lot for both you and the person. This will give her (or him) a means of earning an income, and be able to bless their family. A little goes a LONG way. We don't have a full-time helper now, but we hire nieces and nephews quite often to help with things around the house, projects or even running errands. Its a HUGE help! 😃

@@G5Philippines Hey Brother that is an interesting question and I had to think about it as I mowed my lawn. YES , I do see some similarities. I do not know any wealthy Mexicans in Mexico City they may be more like the modern/western women here in the US. But my wife was raised in a small town in the state of Mexico and she has a lot of the same qualities of the Philippines women. They are not as concerned about age, they want a man that will love , protect and take care of them. They have traditional values that have been lost here in the US. We can retire to Mexico and live a good life without the government interfering in every aspect. Having a live in maid is also very affordable there as well. I am inspired by your actions and am trying to make it happen for me too brother.

If you can find the right helper at the right price then why not. Finding that right person is the challenge. If you find good help then hold on with both hands. Sometimes the person that you get will be inept, dishonest, lazy, etc… You also have to think about their medical care, education, social security, etc… If you spend a lot of time working and/or have a family to take care of, a helper can be a life saver.

    • @G5Philippines

Hello @lmcc0072 ... Thank you for sharing your view on the topic! Definitely a set of challenges/benefits involved in hiring the right helper. Finding the right person can be difficult, and like you said, considering their overall well-being, medical care, education, etc, is a good thing, but I will say that typically, that wouldn't be an expectation by the helper. It's up to you how far you want to extend your compensation and benefits. Thanks again for sharing. Peace and blessings!

Sounds like you hit a jackpot with her. It is quite uncommon to find someone skilled and honest at the same time. Also, the fact she was a relative of your wife doesn't really help in every case. It could be worse in fact.
As a single guy, especially living in a small apartment, I'd avoid the live-in situation like the plague.

Hello @Abelius! thanks for sharing your thoughts. and yes, it really worked out well for us, but you're right, finding a skilled and honest live-in housekeeper can be challenging. You're violating rule #1, NEVER work with family LOL. I'm perfectly capable of doing everything a housekeeper would do, I think the only reason I would have one is to help support a local and give them a job earning an honest wage, but wouldn't want one or anyone else living with us because I wouldn't want them listening to everything going on in the bedroom ;) From what I've seen in most videos covering this topic, the biggest benefit is them taking care of going to pay the bills and shopping because they know where to get the best deals. Thanks for the great incite on this subject, love the way you present your videos, no nonsense straight to the point and no unnecessary drama added in, just calm, relaxed, and straight to the point. I recognize this is 2+ years old but I have a question. I thought the thirteenth month payment was mandated by law. I am not sure how weekly pay gets around that part of the law plus all of the other requirements one must pay into for hired domestic staff.

    • @G5Philippines
      @G5Philippines  Місяць тому +1

Hello @donaldlilly495 ... great question, I'm not sure how that applies in private/family arrangements, compared to a company with multiples of employees. If we had gone through an agency, or other formal process, we might have been subject to formal standards. In our case, I had become aware of the 13th month thing from one of my bro-in-laws. I may not have explained this very well in the video, but with 52 weeks in a year, being paid on a monthly basis, he is only getting paid for 48 of the 52 weeks, THUS the 13th month benefit. When we worked out the payment structure with our helper, she preferred weekly payments, so we just made it simple and paid her on a weekly basis. So, at the end of the day, she was paid the same identical amount as the 13th month payment structure. Regarding other benefits like PhilHealth, the amount we paid her included allowance for those, although we never asked her if she did any of that. I don't like to brag about the little stuff we do, but the thing about that situation was that while we needed help for that season, her and her family needed the income. She also enjoyed a lot of lifestyle perks, generous bonuses, way better work conditions and structure than what she was accustomed to. She is family, and was treated like family. However, I do think it's prudent, if we were to ever hire another helper, (and we have talked about it) to research these potential requirements. Since then, it's worked out well for us to just pay nieces and nephews for odd jobs which helps us and helps them. 🙂 Let me know if that answers your questions.

@@G5Philippines Thank you for your reply and hope you are well. You would know much better than others. A family circumstance is different than, as you said, hiring from an agency. One can all too easily find horror stories of domestic staff being taken advantage of as they are typically less familiar with their rights, or they are hired into a position in UAE or other country. The perks that one is able to provide for a domestic that would go largely unnoticed in other places are very much the exception in others and appreciated much more, e.g. paying for trips, transportation costs, food, etc.

Most people in 3rd world / developing countries don't have a bank account let alone debit/credit cards so not a big priority for the companies. I live in Peru, South America and I think the statistics that they released during the pandemic were that 90% of the population did not have a bank account. Hello @iggi ... unfortunately, there are a lot of bad situations out there. I'm sure you know of these, and that is why you feel that way, and I respect that. it's like everything else, there are always good and bad situations. 😢

By the same logic many Filipinos are slaving each other. Basically they are skilled predators practicing modern day slavery. Well if you believe in that then blame your culture and traditions. We kanos didn't make the rules. We play by them. When in Rome do as the Romans do.

SLAVE LABOR!!!!!!! you seem like a good man and happy with your Filipina family- that's great-- BUT paying a full-time housekeeper for only $20/week is SINFUL -- i admit i might take advantage of CHEAP LABOR ALSO if given the chance- but i never would advertise that!!! it is no wonder there is an EXPAT TAX in the markets- it is a dog-eat-dog attitude!!!! especially a family member!!! who cares what the going rate is!!!

Hello @Bruce Devaux ... I'm going to honor your comment with a response, but I will not get into any arguments. I do not judge you for having your opinion, but you should consider the possibility that you might not know all of the facts. It's very easy to broadbrush, to pass judgement and it might seem fairly straight forward to call $20 per week slave-pay. However, there are a lot of intangibles that a live-in housekeeper enjoys beyond the salary. Further, you might not realize that housekeepers earning this pay are making more than their brothers who are out in the sun, sweating it out driving a pedicab for pennies... the security guards in our neighborhood only make $50 per week, working 6 days/12 hour shifts. The average salary for a college educated office worker starts at about $300 to $500 per month depending on the job. All of this to say, the going $20 per week pay rate for a housekeeping is the norm, and as I said, all of the additional perks...
And while you might despise what I am telling you, it is perfectly OK that you feel the way you do. But NO SINS were commited, quite the opposite in fact, and we all sleep well at night. Bruce, it really is ok to express your opinion, but you'll get a better response if you don't come out with your double-barrel judgements. And I also want to tell you that I genuinely appreciate your passion in defending the Filipino workers. I definitely know your heart is in the right place there. 🙂

@@G5Philippines She doesn't pay rent, utilities, food and maybe gets other things like some clothing and some medical expenses paid etc. She can save 5k clean per month and that is very nice in the Philippines.

Even though you may have been paying the "going rate" I think if you can afford it you should be paying her a lot more...at least double. Even paying double would probably not hurt most western budgets, and would show her that she is not just a robotic service purchased at a knock down prices taking advantage of the local economic realities. Sure some might take advantage of such generosity, but it would be a small price to pay to allow feeling good about yourself.

Hello Daniel Mceachin ... when I get comments like yours, it's natural to feel a little bit like, "huh? what does he mean?" The thing is, people who create videos for youtube are driven by different motivations, from just having fun to more serious, trying to make money. For me, its just a means of passing on my experience, learning as I go. As a viewer, you should consider that the content is free, and you have a choice to watch it or not. If you don't like it, just click away. That's what I do. But making negative comments only makes you look negative. I have received my share of negative comments, and mostly I just ignore them because the person leaving that comment must have nothing else to do but to take time to go to the trouble of leaving that negative comment. I'm not picking on you, you're not the only negative commenter, but I will offer something that my Mom taught me. If you don't have anything good to say, then don't say anything at all. I wish you the best, obviously I care, or I wouldn't go to the trouble to respond to your comment. Peace and Blessings Daniel.
