  • In July 2020, I went from drinking four cups of coffee to zero, and I will never drink caffeine habitually again. Quitting caffeine is unequivocally one of the most positive and impactful changes I've made in my life, up there with cycling. Here's why and how I quit and why I'm never going back to drinking caffeine again.

    What society doesn’t tell you , if you suffer from anxiety or hight blood pressure , steer clear of all caffeine ie coffee , strong tea and cola drinks . Even doctors don’t mention this either , a good one will .
    I’m down from 3 cups a day to 3 cups a week of coffee and my ability to deal with high stress situations is massively better and the sleep is much better .

    I work as a barista at Starbucks (gross I know) and I actually don’t drink coffee. My regular drink is an iced chai, but it’s literally all I ever drink there. Almost everything we have is extremely sugary or caffeinated, so I shy away from ordering a large most of the time. Also riding my bike to work helps, but the daily coffee aficionados are insane.

      @@machrellibet9457 I was more so poking fun at the regulars who order a massive frappuccino with 5 espresso shots and 10 pumps of caramel everyday. Spend your money however you like but people are a bit ridiculous sometimes. I don’t hate my job or anything but a lot of people online get annoyed when you complain or joke about it (literally everyone has rough days at work it’s nothing new). It’s just sorta silly when someone gets worked up over a barista they don’t even know and a place they rarely go.

    Love your vids, respect, great subject, I'm a pipe smoking, coffee drinking fixie rider, but I did manage to quit alcohol a few years ago! It's work in progress, but for sure the more I ride the less I smoke! It took me a while to NOT miss the alcohol in 0% beer, particularly at social events, but now I actually prefer it. Coffee is on my 'to go' list, but kudos for highlighting the common addictions we all have, including bike components! All that said, kinda ironic that the pop-up ads on your video were for coffee companies! Have a great ride.

    I quit coffee 6 days ago. The first 3 days I had no motivation to live. It was really hard because I have two small children to care for and I could barely move😅 I have had a decaf latte once which has a little caffeine and a kombucha a couple times which has around 10 mg caffeine but compared to the 250-300mg I was drinking I would say I’m okay with this.

    Id just like to point out that I’m happy seeing someone report 2 years out. A lot of UA-camrs doing no caff videos think that doing a 2 week or 30 day challenge is actually effective. It’s not. Anything under 6 months I don’t even bother trying to gain information from them or watch the video. Withdraws are much too long to waste my time looking at a really short challenge.

    Day 12 cold turkey.
    I had to take a week off while I was detoxing off the caffeine.
    Same routine as you:
    Watch UA-cam in bed, get up and make breakfast lunch and dinner, watch UA-cam videos and check out social media.
    Feeling better at the beginning of this week I put on 86 miles on the bike, today is Sunday I plan on doing 30 to 40 miles.
    The benefits of quitting caffeine are everything that you described in your video.
    I'm planning on going a few months no caffeine, then use caffeine occasionally on a long bike ride when I put in 3 to 4 hours and I still have a long way home. But I'm not going back to having caffeine in the morning, if I do I know I'll slide back into the old addicted behavior.
    I'm so thrilled to be over the caffeine detox.

  • @Siberius-

    Cool video. Interesting how some selective things are so hypocritically normalised. When it becomes an addiction, that's not so ideal. I never started drinking coffee, because it was never pushed on me by my parents... and the taste alone was definitely not enough to make me want to drink it (generally an acquired thing, like forcing oneself to enjoy beer). It has come up a lot over the years, and asking if I want a coffee, and I always say no, because I don't like it, but also I don't want to needlessly start this habit and addiction.
    There's caffeine in a lot of stuff, but I'm very far from being addicted or habitually buying things that have caffeine in them. Which is how I like it. I see how people are often fucked in the mornings if they don't have their coffee... I don't wake up like that. I don't want to rely on a substance to function, including through the day.
    I also don't care about the social element. Plus yea you can just order something else. I think the main point is being with people and talking. A drink of some sort helps to blend in but yea. Same with alcohol, I don't really drink alcohol, I don't get drunk I don't like it. If I do want to lightly drink, I drink vodka cruisers (high alcohol content though), because they taste so damn good. I once hid what I was drinking through using coke to change the colour. I'm not insecure about that sort of thing anymore. As soon as you even begin to delve into these social norms, you realise very quickly how bazaar it all is.

    • @akatgif
      @akatgif 5 місяців тому

      Regarding caffeine being normalized;
      1. Many people drink coffee for decades without negative side effects.
      2. Caffeine provides tangible benefits for most people for a period of time... live and learn.
      3. The use of the word "normalized" when it comes to using substances, in my opinion, is sort of misguided and uninformed - why? To each his own... abuse a substance, an addictive substance, and you find out!!!
      There's no one set of standards and behaviors when it comes to using mind altering substances.
      A typical reason why caffeine abuse is so prevalent is the reality that caffeine abuse does not cause catastrophic consequences. Typically there's no catastrophic harm as a result of being addicted to addicted to caffeine........ yes there are rare exceptions.
      I work in addiction treatment; working inside Medical Rehab you can tangibly witness the catastrophic side effects of various addictive altering mind-altering substances. In 20 years I've never seen anyone go through addiction treatment for caffeine.

    • @Siberius-
      @Siberius- 5 місяців тому

      @@akatgif - We might have a different bar for what counts as negative side effects.
      If the bar is high enough, I'm going to agree with you.
      It's certainly not comparable to being addicted to alcohol, or prescription painkillers, etc.
      There's tangible benefits to a lot of things that are sometimes a net-negative for whatever reasons specific to the individual.
      As far as coffee not being catastrophic and people being able to function on it, I agree.
      Ultimately I blame the relationship humans have with their workplace. Of course people are going to drink coffee (and do other stuff). This has also dictated our sleep schedules to be the way they are.
      I feel you may be thinking my stance on caffeine is a lot more extreme than it is.
      I should also say that I don't think I am better than anyone else just because I happened to not be predisposed to these things. That's just fortune on my part; not that I don't have other struggles, like severe procrastination, a concerning lack of worry for getting my future in order, a lack of drive, etc. lol.

    I've drinked up to 10 cups of hot tea per day. Yes, 10 (ten) cups per day. It lasted for no less than 15 years. For some unknown reason tea has more caffeine than the coffee has and it has led to getting arthritis in my toes and the jaw. I'm just 34 years old. For that reason I never use clipless pedals because finding shoes that fit is impossible. The moral of the story: fuсk caffeine, drink water.

The real issue isn't coffee or caffeine itself, but the lack of education and knowledge on how it works. It's very possible to have a high caffeine consumption and still lead a very healthy and balanced daily routine, but it involves some discipline, paying attention to timing and some numbers.

    I can attest that as a coffee lover that taking too much caffiene is a horrible feeling especially since I have anxiety issues. I brew my own coffee and limit the amount to 2 cups at most. Also know that robusta, a coffee variety most used for cheaper coffee brews, have twice as much caffiene as arabica, and really unpleasant to drink. One more thing, be careful about getting cold brews in rando restaurants, those are dilute concentrates and sometimes the person might not dilute it enough and you can get twice as much caffeine that you expected. But quitting bad habits is always something to commemorate and i hope for the best.

    Coffee (good quality) actually has many antioxidants. Drinking a cup a day is good for your health. Obviously too much of anything can potentially be a bad thing. As far as your blood pressure being high when you went to the doctor... did you cycle to get there? Your heart rate would obviously be way higher than it normally would. I always told the nurse when she was taking mine that I had just cycled to get to my appointment, so to take that into consideration. I definitely used to drink way too much coffee, but now I just have one, or two cups a day (actual cups, not double size). What's bad, is to take creme/milk and sugar in your coffee, but on it's own coffee isn't bad for you. And don't drink instant coffee, that's full of chemicals and isn't even real coffee anyways.

      Eggheads suggest coffee in moderate amounts (1-2 cups per day, like) can be beneficial for liver. Who knows. Maybe. Maybe not. I just don't believe caffeine is reason of high blood pressure, unless consumed daily in high doses. Cup or two for healthy individual unlikely does harm. Sugar and cream people use to add to coffee is more harmful without burning that calories.

    I had to quit sugar for 2 years - my doctor recommended me this to ease the acne, and I also had teeth issues. I've grown up: now my acne is gone, and my teeth have been cured - now I enjoy cakes and candies again, but I keep my drinks sugar-free for better taste. Each solution is situational and don't have to be permanent 😉

    Sounds like your body is a bit weak, nothing to be ashamed of but good to recognize!
    I've been up to sometimes 3L of coffee in a day, but I've never noticed any effect. I guess I'm just built different.

      @@Boozer42069I discovered a few years ago that I had an adrenal tumour called a pheochromocytoma. Towards the end of 2021, it was pumping 82x the normal level of adrenaline into my body, so any amount of caffeine would have very little effect.
      Since I had it removed, I still don't have any effect from caffeine, since my body still has an extreme ability to neutralize stimulants from decades of dealing with the tumour.
      I dont drink as much coffee anymore, for no particular reason :)

      It's inaccurate to assume that his body must be weak since caffeine affects him badly. In fact studies have shown that genetics have an effect on how someone metabolises caffeine. He's clearly in good enough shape if he's doing all that cycling.

      Caffiene addicts really don't want to accept how bad their drug is lol. I'd know, I was the same for a long time. The reality is putting your body into fight or flight mode all day every day isn't actually healthy; shock.

      Exercise raises blood pressure during the moment of exercising but the body's blood pressure lowers for the rest of the day after working out. Why do you think athletes have an average of 50-60 bpm?

    Your caffeine withdrawal was real, but you're a sugar addict, are you not?
    Sugar is the stimulant you're actually addicted to...I doubt your mom can serve a meal without starch. Must be nice to live at home for free.
