  • Small and NANO Tank (I'm calling a 5 gallon Nano tank). This is fun for me to setup such a little fishtank. The smaller the Aquarium the harder they are to keep. Remember that Little tanks aren't going to give you enough room to screw up.

    What’s up Fishtank People?!
Fishtank tv.com Dustin’s Fishtank bringing it to YOU on a Sunday baby house everybody doinging I hope you are doing well.
So Today I want to start the SMALL TANK Series. Today I am going to setup a 5 gallon
NOTE: I own more 75s and 125 than any other size aquarium. Generally speaking the bigger the tank the easier it is to work with but through out this series we are going to be breaking this all down for you on the Pros and the Cons.
So TODAY we are going to start with the 5 gallon.
First- Finding a 5 gallon out of the gate wasn’t easy for me to do, perhaps it is because the dollar per gallon sale was going on…. OR more likely because a 5 gallon isn’t that great of a size of an aquarium.
We are going to get into the drawbacks and CONS of a 5 gallon in a minute, but first. Let’s start with the positives.
    The Positives.
    1. A small tank is easy to find a place for. They don’t take up a bunch of space, they are easy to move it you want.
    2. A 5 gallon tank doesn’t require all that great of a stand. A gallon of water weights a little over 8 pounds. So a 5 gallon tank weights a bit over 40 pounds. NOTE: Those of you on that wonderful metric system (and those of you who aren’t) (Don’t ask me why only the USA, Liberia and Burma are the only countries in the world who haven’t switched to the metric system)
    3. They are EASY to LIGHT. A small tank only need a little bit of light to penetrate to the bottom of the tank, conversely if you want to get hard core with the lighting tanks. Its not hard to POWER light these tanks.
    4. It easier to do water changes. You can do a 20% water change with just scooping the water out into a bucket
    5. Easy to plant! You don’t need whole lot to cover the bottom of the tank with plants.
    6. Cheaper to Plant- You can use fancier, premium substrate which while it might cost more, you don’t need a ton of it.
    7. Easier to Throttle up with Fertilizers-, adjust water parameters, heat ect.
    8. Super easy to tear down and start over if you screw it up.
    THE NEGATIVES.
    1. A small 5 gallon doesn’t give you enough room to screw up
    2. For example. If your filter goes bad or stops working, you simply don’t have the surface area of beneficial bacteria to catch up with the increase waste from fish.
    3. You can’t keep a heavy fish load as there simply isn’t the room to hold them. Your fish selection is somewhat limited on both the AMOUNT of fish, and the amount of species to fit (there are still tons, but some, like slightly larger getting cichlids are OUT.
    4. Equipment is limited for future growth. A heater, filter, or lights built to spec exactly a 5 gallon aren’t going to go far, when, you will inevitable upgrade later.
    5. The Dominos fall FASTER- that is if something dies, the water volume is less, fish die quicker.
    - If something gets sick, the disease is more condensed and could spread faster
    - If something happens to your PH it would swing greater
    - If something were to happen with your heater, either it sticks ON or stop working, the temps will swing harder
My goal and my Universal Gift to the Universe is to try to teach people how to Make AQURIUMS EASIER. With this as my credo and my Mantra- I DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT YOUR FIRST TANK BE A 5 gallon Aquarium.

Hi, I want to get a beta fish, I read somewhere that they need at least 5g to be happy and healthy, if I just wanted the one fish, despite all of the negatives for the smaller tank, would that be ok. Or should I still go ahead and buy a bigger tank for the one little guy?

Yeah tanks are weird and where you buy them the price range becomes wack. I see them at Walmart for a little under $20 sometimes and at my local pet store they go for around $5. But yeah like he was saying, the more room in the aquarium the more stuff your going to by so they are probably trying to get you to buy the bigger one.

Yes, 5 gallons have a lot of drawbacks, but if you get a kit, such as the Fluval Spec V, all you need to add is a heater, substrate, plants and/or decorations and you have a great Betta tank or a Pea Puffer tank. If you're keeping a species that is best kept alone, the 5 gallon can be your friend. Of course, it helps if you are an experienced fish keeper.

i started with a big tank and regretted it, spent 600 dollars on a setup for a 60 gallon, it went horrible.. even with stable water conditions and the right amount of food fish died it was horrible, broke it down and got rid of it, so now i have one 10 gallon for the fish that were left in the 60 gallon, and 2 5 gallons for 2 betta my life is so must simpler now, just to mention the betta were never in together and were never in the 60 gallon they had their own set up the whole time

  • @JHartModelworks
    @JHartModelworks 7 років тому +5

Loving this series man. keep up the great work!
I love my 10 Gal, and honestly it's been more stable than my 60. Mostly because I follow your philosophy of huge plant load to small fish load. Currently i have a lemon sword and 7 cardinal tetras which is more than i normally keep.
Plant wise I have several crypt undulatas, 2 amazon swords, a whole mess of wisteria that has formed like a cave on one side, a splash of java moss that originated as a couple of strings that rode in on a plant order from you, and a pseudo carpet of s-repens.
The plants keep it all stable.

Veteran fishkeepers tend to persuade beginners to buy larger tanks that ends up not having enough space and overstocking because they'll be overwhelmed how big their tank is. Small tanks like 2.5 to 5g will just be enough if you have small space, tight budget, keeping just 1 betta or snail even a shrimp. 5g above when you decides to have a community tank, keeping larger fishes, aquascaping or acquired a bountiful space to stockpile multiple tanks for different fishes. But for beginners I say 2.5 to 5g is fine to start the amazing hobby of fishkeeping.

Dustin, you have to be careful not to put too much gravel down, bc even if you're planted & have good clean water, the fish waste can sink in the deep gravel. Covered up, anaerobic bacteria will develop. It can kill the fish if it gets released, which will happened either naturally because the gas is not develop will rise out, or if the gravel gets disturbed.

    • @thatfishgirl
      @thatfishgirl 5 років тому +1

Since the gravel is bigger it allows oxogen exchange. If it was a finer gravel or sand that would be problematic.

the cool thing about Taiwan is everything is pretty inexpensive but we don't have sets like you would buy everything you have to buy separately the light the filter of the tank the plants the fish the gravel any kind of hardscaping it's all separate but it does add up and we only have aquariums without lids thankfully most of my bettas aren't jumpers but just in case you usually leave about 4 cm of space so they don't jump out

Good tips D. I got three 10 gallons in the shed I might just bust out after watching this. I got a new substrate I just discovered. It's made by Schultz. It's called AQUATIC PLANT SOIL and it comes in a 10 pound bag for 6 bucks. It's ceramic based and holds plants firm. The soil itself has no fertilizer in it, but the soil more than makes up for it with being the perfect environment to hold root systems. It's reddish and millimeter size. Its heavy and comes dry,but when wet feels similar to eco complete at the third or the price. It's my new go to for dirt capping. Sorry for long comment.

I have a 6.5gal acrylic "bookshelf aquarium" kit set up on a $90 stand LOL. Originally I was going to get the 40gal tank to go with the stand but then I lost my home and had to leave the fish with a friend. It's a long story. The positive side to small aquariums is definitely their mobility. If your living situation is sketchy and you absolutely must have an aquarium, the acrylic nano kits with a betta, some ghost shrimp, a nerite snail and some crypts and other short plants are about all you can do. I wouldn't go more than 6gal. I have moved a mature 20gal aquarium and it was not fun for me or the aquarium.

I'm getting a 5 gallon for my newt, she is incredibly small and skinny, the pet store had her on moss only even though she's supposed to have transitioned into a semi-aquatic stage already, she also wasn't eating because they fed her crickets the size of half her body. I have her in a 10G currently but noticed she barely leaves her repto filter so I'm going to use a smaller half aquatic tank to transition her into the bigger space. Wish me luck, she's the cutest.

Regarding the rocks found to use, what about the white vinegar trick to see if it's overly reactive:
The vinegar test works because of acetic acid (use a pure vinegar, like a plain white vinegar, which can be used to sterilize new plants and used tank equipment). Acetic acid reacts with lime (a base, which will raise your pH) in the rocks, which you see as fizzing, or bubbling.

Dustin I noticed you did not use dirt under the gravel. I have one 5gal with dirt under gravel that plants grow in, and one with a sand only substrate with anubius growing only on the hardscape with nothing in the sand, on my desk. Both are doing great, are amazingly low maintenance, and are years old. Why no dirt under gravel? You are the king of dirt substrate and are the reason all of my larger tanks are doing so well! Do you not recommend dirt in a nano?

Dustin's Fish Tanks RIP - It seems like petco is always out of whatever it is you want to buy! Whenever I go there to buy some ghost shrimp, they always just sell it to another person!

Curious about the street rocks you keep talking about???
Do the street rocks affect the tank/ aquariums water ?

I like your hardscape because it doesn't take up the entire tank.
I prefer to have hardscaping that's not too tall and then your fish has more room to swim
by any chance would you happen to have like a Gmail because I'd really like to show you some pictures of my tanks one in particular I really didn't have to spend much money on

Great helpful video! I a attempting to start a freshwater tank 5 gallons. I am concerned as I am new, and dont want to kill any fish i would buy in a few weeks from now. My tank has colored gravel, few live plants, filter, led lights, dechlorinated water and the recommended bacteria. im waiting for my water tester kit to arrive, thermometer and ammonia for fish less cycling. I already had a ten gallon tank at home i couldve used but i thought id splurge on this one that came as a small kit at petsmart

5 gallons are the largest fish tanks that you can reasonably carry. That said, it's always risky to carry glass tanks around.
