I have a challenge for you. Using a selection from your own top 5 set up a 5 five gallon aquascape on a budget as a beginners set/guide. Would be great to get other channels in on the challenge to see a wide variety of 5 gallons and different tastes.
One trick with dwarf frogs is to use a small terracotta saucer. Always drop the food into the saucer. The frogs eat the food faster because they learn to go straight to the terracotta saucer for feeding.
Once upon a time I had a school of 10 neon green tetras in a nicely planted 5 g. My son snagged it 8 yrs ago when he moved in with his GF, and kept up with water changes and kept them alive for a couple of years, I was totally impressed. Usually when I talked fish to him his eyes rolled up in his head and snoring, or coulda been snorting sounds would come out his nose and mouth, lol.
I’m going off to college soon and I’m working on figuring out what to put in my five gallon for school. This video was super helpful and most of these fish I’ve never heard of!
Aquarium co op: I recommend the honey gourami for the 5 gallon Employees at petco: you can probably get away with a red tail cat, a few Oscars and flower horns, maybe even an extra pleco to add on top
In my experience, African Clawed Frogs are way easier to keep than Dwarf Frogs. Bigger bioload though. I agree with the point about WCM Minnows. They're the toughest fish I've seen so far. And they hardly produce any waste.
Could you do a video with examples of communities that can be kept in a 5 gallon (e.g. Two guppies, a snail, 3 cherry shrimp, 3 cordydoras etc). I have a 6 gallon tank and I really want a variety of different species (fish, snails, shrimp etc) but I don't know how many of each I can have. I don't want to overstock the tank.
My suggestion (if you haven't gotten any fish yet) is 6 celestial pearl danio, ramshorn snails (I like the blue ones), 10 or more cherry shrimp (a 6 gallon could probably have near 100 shrimp), and maybe 3 or 4 pygmy corys or otocinclus.
@@Vohasiiv Both pygmy corys & otocinclus need bigger numbers and a bigger tank. I had 6 pygmies in a densely planted 7.5 gallon, but I'd double that number next time, and get them at least a 10 gallon. They are really active, and do sooo much better (and are much cuter) schooling together. Otos should be kept in groups of 5-6 or more at least. Perhaps you didn't know, but both these species school in the hundreds in the wild, where they are caught (very few are tank raised). Check out Rachel O'Leary's channel, she specializes in nano fish like that...
I've actually been thinking of experimenting with a 5 gallon dirted tank, just so I can say that I've done it. I have to disagree for honey gouramis. I had one in the past in a 15 gallon. I'd personally say they shouldn't go in anything smaller than a 10 gallon.
Both are great lists! I liked how your comments complimented the other's fishes. Joel had my all time favorite, Mountain Minnows. I have some LF Meteors in my tub that had to stow away there on Water Wisteria roots. What a wonderful hobby this is!
The aquarium co-op nano food in the squirt bottle works great for chili rasboras! Mine will eat from the top and the middle, and this food will hang out in those levels for a long time.

Hey hope you will reply, ive been thinking of doing a biotope 5 gallon tank and was wondering if a pair of strawberry bettas could be kept in there? Wasnt really sure as i couldnt find much online…
I know this is an older question, but yes, a pair male/female in a 5 gallon should be fine. Go somewhat blackwater and they SHOULD breed up for you. Kept them years back. Great fish, very underated. Good job finding some, they've became super rare in my area. I'm jealous!
Thank you for the video. After my Betta passed I've been wanting to get a community tank but didn't know what was safe for 5 gallon tank...Will definitely look back into this video when I plan on getting fish
You guys must read my mind. I have an empty 5 gallon I'm trying to get the parameters regulated. I had a red dragon Betta in there but now he is really happy in my 55 gallon with my planted platy fish tank. He's half blind so I think he likes the space but can't see the babies too well to eat them. Curious about the strawberry Bettas. I've read not to mix females with males of the captive breed Bettas but why are the strawberry Bettas ok with that?
Ashley Pajak well betta splendens have been bred for the longest time just for fighting, that used to be the main purpose. It was a really twisted sport, only later they were really being bred just for color. So 97% will kill other betta fish in a tank small as 5-15 gallons. Strawberry Betts on the other hand are wild caught and are way more docile. I guess in the wild they're stuck with each other too
I have a question I am running a 10gal tank. Half sand half gravel with live plants. My reading show great except for PH and high hard water. But the odd thing is it shows my PH is low not high. My Nirite snails and black skirt tetras and neon tetras are doing just fine and my plants I couldn’t be happier with there growth. Endler/guppies are underrated for nanotanks

Endlers are not my favorite because they keep nipping my Cory’s, my betta, AND A SNAIL which is not that bad tbh 🤔
