    I asked for a mix between the short and long-form content in the comments a couple weeks ago and boy did you deliver. Love these bite-sized reviews co-existing with videos like the M:I one you put out earlier. You and Murrell are truly the two film critics I hold in most high regard.

    Nice scripting and editing Dave! In less than four minutes I felt like I got a personal and thoughtful review. Love this format!

    I've decided to never watch this movie. I never watched part 4, and I think keeping it a trilogy is the right move here. This is very rare for me though, I usually watch everything. I just love the original trilogy so much and have always loved how it ended. It'd be like making Back to the Future 4. I don't need it.

      They made a BTTF game that was a continuation of the trilogy so that was your part 4 right there.

      But keeping Indy franchise a movie trilogy? Not so sure about that. Should it have been kept in the 80’s? Maybe. Uncharted was never a trilogy. Sean Connery’s James Bond films turned out to be more than a trilogy and yet he liked that role a lot less than Harrison Ford liked playing Indy. Maybe they should have made more Indy adventures but in video game format (at least 4 original ones btw). Personally I’d go see the movie just to say goodbye to him (as this character) and John Williams music as well.

      The last Indie flick ended with them riding off into the sunset. I heard they're already blaming it's bad reviews on Ford being old!😂😂😂 Clint Eastwood played a badass in his late ages and was believable but he had control over the script so this was intentional to sh*t on Indie and shoe horn in Fleabag

      One of the reasons why I don’t quite agree with the review. They all went to the places. And while it doesn’t look as good as Spielberg would have framed it I think the trade between practical and digital feels better than with Crystal skull

    Got to see an early screening and sadly broadly agree with your thoughts here. Not loving I decided to put this #1 in the summer movie wager b/c nostalgia drove Top Gun so why not this. Cruise though in Top Gun clearly went to a place and did a thing and now he is again in MIpt1. Hey, great review format and nice camera placement.

    Love your reviews Dave! But I have to disagree with your point about Crystal Skull - While I love Janusz's cinematography normally, I think it was all wrong in Crystal Skull. It needed to look more consistent with the first three. And so much of that film is full of bad greenscreen work.

    Interesting criticism but KOTCS never set foot outside of the US and the entire third act was on greenscreen because Spielberg didn’t want to go overseas. Is DOD worse? They definitely shot stuff in the U.K.

    • @davechensky

      Fair points about KOTCS. I think you’ll have to see the movie yourself and decide if my critique is valid. But I’m curious!

      And that is a big difference between Crystal Skull and this movie. They shot on physical locations in the UK (Scotland, Yorkshire), and also on location in Sicily and Morocco. Sure...they also filmed in pinewood studios, like all the Indy movies, but unlike Crystal Skull, with this movie they actually went to places and did things. So I don't know what this guy is talking about in the review about how it doesn't look like they went anywhere. 😂 I guess people are so used to the volume that they are now expecting everything is the volume?

    • @danowen79
      @danowen79 10 місяців тому +1

      @@caomhan84 It’s probably that certain stunts are augmented by CGI these days, or they don’t do all the stunts on location so much but go there to get photorealistic backgrounds for use later. I’m sure a lot of things done “for real” haven’t just been captured on camera and shown to us, they’ve been heavily manipulated afterwards and given that false feel.

    • @caomhan84
      @caomhan84 10 місяців тому

      @@danowen79 It could be. I know the parade sequence was actually filmed in Scotland with huge green screens to show the crowds. But I watched the leaked 6 minute Morocco chase sequence and it looks fine to me. There's only one point in that entire 6 minutes that looks like it was CG augmented. Because the rest of that stunt is practical. We have footage of it being performed. I guess I could see people complaining about the train sequence at the beginning of the film. We've seen it briefly in the trailers and it does look heavily CG augmented. I don't know; I guess I have to see it myself. But James Mangold did say that they were as practical as they could be with this movie.

  • @ZachBobBob

    Oof I don't know about you saying Crystal Skull looks better than Dial of Destiny because that movie looks dreadful in my opinion. It's got that weird effect the Hobbit movies have with everything has too much bloom and glare, everyone and everything is glowing and the green screen and CGI is glaringly obvious. That being said though Dial of Destiny also had too much CGI...but for me it was a better looking, more grounded film.
    Was the movie necessary? Absolutely not...but I liked we got another Indiana Jones adventure and its kinda fun seeing the a character at the end of their lives which we rarely ever see.

    It's interesting that David thinks Skull was filmed on location and looks good. I thought the lighting was unbelievably garish and clashed with the earlier films, and so many of the jungle scenes looked weirdly phony, from the moving sword fight to the vehicle falling off a ravine and being held by a tree, like out if a Bugs Bunny cartoon, which looked super fake. Even the inside of the temple at the end looked like a cheap set; either the lighting or the production design were poorly handled. I won't go into the monkey swinging, etc, because it's too easy.
