I've had the Curl for half a year and I've used the bit screwdriver for the most of the time. I've never had any issues with it being accidentally closed or anything similar, and the reason is that Leatherman team are so clever they designed it a little turned to the outside, and so the more pressure you apply, the more it wants to open. Very clever.
This has all the perfect tools for my profession. I am excited it has a file instead of a saw. I have been using the sidekick for the last two years and miss the scissors. The curl is going to be a must buy for me.
I also have the original Wave. I carried it for years with the optional pocket clip until I recently upgraded it to the leather sheath option because, for me, some tools deserve a leather sheath. I'd highly recommend the optional pocket clip for the Wave, it was the pocket clip & lanyard loop in a pack & definitely worth the price for convenience.
The toolset on the Curl looks absolutely perfect for me. My multitool criteria is: knife, pliers, file, scissors, screwdrivers. An awl isn't a requirement, but I'm always happy to have an awl on a multitool. The awl is like something I never seem to miss when I don't have it, but use all the time when I do have it. The bottle opener is the only thing on the curl I don't want. Problem is, the Curl's cost the equivalent of USD$140 in my country. Which is ridiculous, so I don't have one. And I have a wave, which I never carry because it's too bulky, but I just can't justify paying that much for the Curl.
I use bottle opens to open taped boxes and other packaging. Works just fine for it and means i have to sharpen the actual knife less often. Never really have to bother sharpening the bottle opener as it can do those task just fine even dull.
I used that teeny screwdriver as a pick more than anything else. That file is actually part of the reason I picked one up. I use it 10 times more than the saw in my daily work as a metal fabricator. I carry a folding bahco saw being my driver's seat that's much nicer to use for anything over 1" dia. Anything under that you can usually break off. Also fwiw the saw off the wave would 100% fit in place of the file if you wish to customize your tool for your uses.
I’d like to just have the saw available from the factory instead of modding it. Of course there are people who prefer the file, I’m just not one of them
Replace the file with large scissors and this would be a really nice edc setup. But the file makes it something you’d carry when doing handyman or construction work. When we built our greenhouse we were constantly needing to file stuff. But I rarely use them for day-to-day tasks.
I've never used the saw on any Leatherman I've owned, but the scissors and file get used constantly. Personally I'd love to have easier access to the scissors, but I already have a Free P2 that does that for me, so the Curl with a large and easy access file is appealing.
I actually used the saw twice yesterday! I had some wild branches next to a house where we were trying to set up a 20’x20’ solid black overhead. Not big, maybe an inch and a half in diameter. Took out my Leatherman instead of heading to the truck for my sawsall. Love it
Nice video, but just an FYI, possibly already mentioned. That's not an original Wave. I think it's possibly a 2nd gen Wave or something. I have an original, so know how it looks😀
I got a Curl! It's great! It's a little pretty for what I use it for, but: >The Improved pocket clip >Lighter weight makes the Curl better then the Wave. You still have to make sure you have the non blade side on your palm, or you get the PINCH! (ouch...) No locking, but I don't miss locking tools. IMHO (Yeah, I might replace the file with a saw)
Sounds like all you need to do is swap the saw from your wave to the curl, which should be super easy to do. Then you’ll have your perfect tool. I’d likely swap the eye glass screwdriver for the awl as well if it fits.
I know this might be of a reach but could you do a review of the nextool flagship pro if you do find one? I think it'd be interesting to hear your thoughts about it.
So from everything I've seen, they need to offer two options, one with a saw and one with the file. As a mechanic, the file is perfect for me, but the saw is invaluable to many. Also this is $90 right now .-.
Great video. Weighing the tools, should take off the Curl pocket clip, or add the leather sheath. The fact that the CURL comes with the clip is hard to compare prices. In one way it's a 70 tool with a $10 clip that comes with it. So hard to review tools when the saw is so important to you, but for others they have never used it. Thanks for the video and I look forward to getting mine.
I just got a Curl today and I've noticed that when opening the knife blade the screw stud pivots WITH the blade instead of the blade moving around the post like my Wave blade. Is this an issue on the curl you have?
Basically the curl is the perfect multi tool for me for outdoors use such as hunting and hiking except for the fact that I need to swap out the file for a saw. I'm hoping I can nab a saw from a wave on ebay and do a straight swap. Seems like an oversight from Leatherman to not offer something like that
@@ChrispyThings I've carried a sidekick for the last 10 years or so and just recently upgraded to a free P2. I like the P2 for the most part but miss the saw that the sidekick has and wish that it had a full fine edge blade rather than the partially serrated one. Will definitely be looking at the curl because I want something that suits my preferences for backpacking and hunting better than the P2. Thanks for the reply!
Just swap the Wave glasses screwdriver with the Curl reamer, and keep rocking the modified Wave. For me the Wave + is just perfect. What I like about Leathermans is that they integrate very well in the contractor ecosystem. If you need to open electricity cabinets, cut or attach something, ... they just work. A reamer in that context has really no use.
Can someone please explain what are the common practical uses are for the awl? Every video about multi tools people talk about how much they love the awl... But I never hear them saying what they use it for. Not hating, just curious.
For anyone watching in 2024, the price difference between the curl and the wave+ is 90 dollars vs 120 dollars so the price difference is greater than a few years ago
@9:09 Add $10 for a pocket clip... Sad. $110 for the new WAVE. I got a used one, but I wish I had got a new one, as there is some wear: The pocket clip was interfearing with the saw opening, and there is play in the file joint. The pocket clip broke... It's still a good multi tool... IMHO
Does anyone know if I could add the saw where the knife blade is ? I’d like to have the saw and file… I could live without the knife blade ( I carry a couple)
*Sigh* watching this a year later. That $20 gap changing to $20 would have been nice if it was because they lowered the price of the Curl like you predicted and not raised it by $10 and the Wave by $20. heh
Sorry late to the party. Video just rolled across my feed. Why don't you just start modding your tools to your liking? Literally 2 driver bits and you're in. It's so easy. I think every leatherman I have has a mod or 2 done to it. Some are full tear down and rebuilds. But it's pretty damn fun. Like playing with leggos lol
I got this multitool today, I’m not impressed-(I played with it for an hour or so) ESP for the $125(including tax)CDN the pliers are very tight, and not spring loaded… the other tools are tight, and almost peeled my nail off. It just feels cheaply made compared to the other older multitools, I have. It’s already been repackaged and will be returned tomroro. I’ll stick to my wingman.
“The only similarity I see between the curl and the bond is the smooth handle” really? You don’t think the slip joint on the inside tools is a similarity?
Guys, it just seems to me that Leatherman is running out of ideas, they’re using up their ‘Old parts bin’ & then leaving small things off the so-called new design. I really think Leatherman needs to design something completely new. Go back to designing a tool for specific professionals. At the moment, ALL their tool have the same stuff. They need to re-think or they’re going to be left behind by other companies!!!! And I don’t wanna see that happen to a great company that’s done so well , so far !!!
Well Curl is more budget friendly option. You want something differen and new get MUT or Signal. Want a beast and modular get Surge. Curl for me is winning with more entry level LM with replaceble bits. I can justify the added price for that, but wave or surge are way out of my budget and needs.
i dont know if leatherman keaps all the good ones for the usa, but i had some nasty, not quite refined waves in the last years, they where nowhere near the quality of a swisstool. the old wave was quite nice, but the newer ones just sucked, sharp edges everywhere, shoddy tollerances, the pliers where very stiff, shar edges in the knife holes, overall not impressed
@@ChrispyThings no you don't ! Original wave is from 1998 to 2003, yours is the 2nd gen which started in 2004 to 2017 then Wave + arrived in 2018 ! I know it's not big of a deal ! Don't want to be a d*ck here but thing is, you're telling the wrong info ! ✌
Really, they just need to make tools interchangeable. Let people pick the tools they want, including knife blades with reasonable steel. Seriously, that 420HC has been obsolete for a long time now.
Men: for 80 bucks perhaps you can get almost two Ozark Trail Multiforce 18 in 1. Actually better than booth on various points if you like this gender of compromise tools. If you would have the definitive Multitool get a Victorinox SwisstoolXplus 3.0339L without wasting money on toys period.
Wave+ here, this is my first leatherman ever and honestly I'm very disappointed, it does feel like its good quality but not "250$ good quality" cuz where im from the wave+ costs this much. The other multitools are also overpriced beyond the "worth it" point. I think i'll be returning mine.

I’m still using the first generation leatherman. It goes everywhere with me.
This has all the perfect tools for my profession. I am excited it has a file instead of a saw. I have been using the sidekick for the last two years and miss the scissors. The curl is going to be a must buy for me.
Nice!
Curl with T-Shank holder (like in surge) could be a perfect tool. Possibility to switch between saw and a file is a win for both world.
All Leatherman multi tools are great to have. Love the clip.
I don't mind pouch carry in the outdoors but for around the house I really like the pocket clip. What tool set is 'best' is always very personal.
I also have the original Wave. I carried it for years with the optional pocket clip until I recently upgraded it to the leather sheath option because, for me, some tools deserve a leather sheath. Check out the Wingman it have large scissors where the file is
I believe your wave is the second gen, original wave was a narrower multi tool and didn’t have the bit driver.
Yup. If it was $70 and had a saw, I would click "buy" right now. They should just let you choose between a saw and a file.
Speaking as someone who mods multitools all the time...even the curl with a saw Won't fully satisfy hehe
You can replace the file with T shank adapter and use wood saw
I've never used the saw on any Leatherman I've owned, but the scissors and file get used constantly. Personally I'd love to have easier access to the scissors, but I already have a Free P2 that does that for me, so the Curl with a large and easy access file is appealing.
I always wonder what people need saws for, so your explanation was pretty interesting! Sounds like a cool job
I actually used the saw twice yesterday!
I had some wild branches next to a house where we were trying to set up a 20’x20’ solid black overhead. Not big, maybe an inch and a half in diameter.
Took out my Leatherman instead of heading to the truck for my sawsall. Love it
They jacket it up to $90.oo for The Curl.
For a pure urban EDC multi-tool, it's a good choice.
Opinions incredibly similar to mine. Curl with a saw instead of a file would be the perfect miltitool.
Nice video, but just an FYI, possibly already mentioned. That's not an original Wave. I think it's possibly a 2nd gen Wave or something. I have an original, so know how it looks😀
I rarely use the can opener. Would prefer another driver. Wish there was room for a saw. Scissors can be nice, but again not usually required.
I got a Curl! It's great! It's a little pretty for what I use it for, but:

makes the Curl better then the Wave. You still have to make sure you have the non blade side on your palm, or you get the PINCH! (ouch...)
No locking, but I don't miss locking tools.
IMHO
(Yeah, I might replace the file with a saw)
I have the old wave also, like all the tools lock and wouldn't trade it for any other leatherman!
Have you considered the rebar for edc? The light weight is really nice.
I just got one not sure yet if I'll keep it Nort orgive away my original wave as a gift
I wish these tools were customizable or hell, even modular.
Sounds like all you need to do is swap the saw from your wave to the curl, which should be super easy to do. Then you’ll have your perfect tool. I’d likely swap the eye glass screwdriver for the awl as well if it fits.
Yes I can do that. And most likely going to do that.
But I’m not reviewing a modded mt. I review gear as is from the manufacturer.
I gotta leatherman fuse and absolutely love it
i replaced the file on my curl with the serrated knife and belt cutter hook knife from the charge + multitool.
I know this might be of a reach but could you do a review of the nextool flagship pro if you do find one? I think it'd be interesting to hear your thoughts about it.

There’s a major price difference between these now. 76 vs 120
As of today the Wave plus vs the Curl is a $40 difference which is substantial.

You would fw the rebar
Get a wave saw and put it on curl :)
You can probably take the saw blade off the wave and put it on the curl.
Absolutely. But I’d like to get something from Leatherman without modding it
Switch the file with the saw, it’s a direct replacement
Yes I know. But this is about the Curl as it’s sold by Leatherman.
I'm sure you could take the file off and replace it with the saw from your wave of you'd want to do that.
Definitely. But I wanted to make this video on how Leatherman sells the Curl as is.
