I spent last night worrying about how to get the clutch off my Gravely 988105. The alternative was to take it to a shop to have it done, with a 7 week backlog. This technique had the clutch off in less than a minute!
Thanks! I was trying to get the PTO clutch off my ford yt16 for the upcoming tractor show and I worked on it I just couldn’t get it off, this tractor was previously neglected a little bit, and there’s oil all over the bottom of it so I didn’t want to risk using a torch. So I tried this method and it worked out just fine after a while.
Thank you. Unfortunately I do not have an air chisel. I used a electric impact wrench a socket and a pipe wrench to do the vibrating. What I did was I had a pipe wrench that was about 11/16inch wide and put that in the end of the socket and while holding the grips I turned on the impact wrench and since the socket couldn't spin the hammering impact feature made the pipe wrench vibrate so I put it up against the engine bolt. I used WD-40 and it penetrated enough that I was able to hit the assembly with a hammer and the whole thing fell out.
FYI on my xt2 I bought new in 2016 I just sprayed liquid wrench on mine let sit for 20 mins came back out to spray more on it damn pto clutch and upper pully both laying on garage floor
Worked like a charm on a clutch that was scaly and looked like it spent some time in the ocean! I bet an old timer taught you that right? lol take care!
Ariens and Gravely are the same company for long as I can remember. I didn't know any lines crossed over directly but this is good info! Thanks for watching!
When the top belt is left on the pulley is in a bind on the shaft. If the belt was off, a slight tap usually removes the whole device. 90% of the time, when the belt is off, taking the bottom bolt lose is all that is needed and the whole thing falls off.
@@IndRepair Just admit you forgot to removed the belt first. I'm just trying to prevent a lot of trouble for the novice mechanic. Even with rust on the crankshaft, there shouldn't be this much trouble getting the PTO off the shaft. The pressure of the belt pulling sideways on the PTO will stop the PTO from sliding off the crank. Just looking at your video, the whole PTO came off the shaft till you got to the last sleeve (there are 2 sleeves with 2 bearings) with the belt on the pulley. The pulley would move up and down the shaft an 1/2 inch or so until you took the belt off, then it slipped completely off.
Most times when needing to remove the PTO clutch it is because you are going to be replacing the drive belt. That was the case here and is the same process to remove as the clutch itself. Thanks for watching!

Perfect! Nice job! Thanks for watching!
Awesome! So glad I saw your video! I was ready to throw the towel 😂keep passing on the message!
Glad you got it taken care of! Thanks for watching!
I bought my air hammer yesterday. Tomorrow will be the day of victory.
Awesome news!

Best method I have seen. thanks
Only way that hasn't let me down yet. Takes varying amount of time depending on how stuck it is. Thanks for watching!
Thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for. I've tried the pry bar, and didn't want to stick a torch up in there. I've got an air hammer.
Glad to help! Thanks for watching!

Not the norm on these but that's definitely possible! Thanks for watching!
Great idea! Thanks for your info 😊
Thanks for watching! Appreciate that!!
GREAT VIDEO ...WORKS REAL GOOD !!
Thanks!
Excellent video..!
Thank you sir.

Works every time! The old timers always have the best tricks and tips for us that is for sure!
If I don't have an air impact hammer?
Use a regular hammer with light taps. It does take a significantly long time but works just as well. These small impacts work lube down onto the shaft
Awesome saved me a lot of time...thanks for the great video!
Thanks for watching!
Going to try this tomorrow for a JD X360. Now the snapped bolt.... that's another matter.
That is always fun! With any luck you will still have enough bolt left past the shaft end to get ahold of it. Thanks for watching!
Does that PTO still work?
Yes it does
Crazy ass people who complain when you’re sharing your knowledge and they still not happy 😆
A lot of those people out there but that is ok. Everyone's got a opinion about everything in today's world! Thanks for watching!
I have the same exact mower but it is a gravely zt2040.

It is your story, do it how you like but the top belt has no effect on the PTO clutch coming off

@@charlesgale8115 The drive pulley was not stuck on. This is pointless.
@@charlesgale8115the drive pulley isn’t attached to the clutch, on the pto belt goes on clutch
My belt is off, and even with the air hammer, it will NOT break loose.
Not working for me with my air hammer. :(
No good! Are you using some penetrating oil along with it?
Short crowbar and air hammer will take it off very fast most of the time 😊
I do this on average 3 times a week. Very rarely one that won't come off!
Yep
Thanks for watching!
See how easy it was with the belt off?
The belt has nothing to do with anything but thanks for watching...
Thats the drive belt that pulley isn’t connected to the clutch at all
Why did you take the top pulley off? That's got nothing to do with the PTO clutch.

Plus add antizzzzzz
Number one.......take the belt off!!!!
Top belt has nothing to do with taking the PTO clutch off. When the PTO is removed we then take the belt off the drive pulley. Thanks for watching!
If I pay 8K for a mower I deman I watch them remove the clutch and never zee it and back wheels
Manufacturer are just trying to make you buy new
They definitely know how to make money off things that you can bet sre going to happen at some point!
