I asked my trombone teacher what the most obscene instrument that he ever saw was, and he told me about this, and I couldn't not search it up. It's amazing.
+cimbassonista Whoa, that's even cooler. I'm a bass trombone player and I've always wanted a contrabass. This is definitely what I'd get instead of a contrabass, which haag model do you use?
The cimbasso came along with all other valve trombones. They were very popular in 19th century because it was very expensive and hard to build good slides. So after the valves were invented there was a boom of valve trombones. With the beginning of the 20th century the slide trombones came back except the cimbasso.
Wow, I've been living in a closet. How old is this instrument? Btw on 3:05 that wasn't water but whiskey haha. Well, II think I'm a more conventional brass player lol. I hope you'll enjoy these two videos. ua-cam.com/video/mAn2wGI9YWg/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/tjber7kV264/v-deo.html
+Drunk people with firearms I'd imagine that a google search might do the trick...this brand is a Haag. Other good ones are Lätzsch and G & P. Meinl and Melton also build cimbassi...that's a start!
Yes, it is a cimbasso, I don't have to look it up (after all, I'm the one playing it in the video). I believe however that his question was referring to whether the bari player was playing bari or bass sax, hence my answer. Context, gentlemen! :)
Thank you for the enthusiastic response. But I'm retired from the Army Band, currently not involved with a jazz band, and a new instrument would be an expensive toy for me during tight economic times.
I play a custom Giddings & Webster titanium mp that is not in general production. It is based on their "Churada", a small F-tuba mp, and that is available from their website...
Wow!!! Your sound is very very good!!! That language!!!!!!! I liked a lot of how you play this. I like your sound. You have a lot of good technique!!! Impresionant!! Big hug Lugo, Spain
@osborl12 It's not really a matter of "advantage". Different range, different sound, completely different instruments! It all depends on what you want. The range difference between a valve trombone and a cimbasso is that of a Euphonium and an F-Tuba (provided that the cimbasso is in F). I wouldn't say that the F-Tuba is "better" than a euphonium, right? You simply use them for different purposes...
Es un pianista como para Michel Camilo...ahora el Cimbasso ni sabia q' existía y se bastante de música tengo casi un 4to año de conservatorio..ajjkllllll...muy buena música q' llena el alma y el
Normally there's not much difference between the F and the E. The trickier range is rather the Ab-G-Gb above that, especially if you have moving lines or jumps, due to intonation and resistance...come F it's easier again :) I've played parts down to C2 but it depends a bit on what it is... and I'd guess it depends on the player and the instrument as well.
I have a question regarding the Cimbasso's range, or rather the quality of it's low range. As I understand it is common practice not to use any notes of the 1st harmonic series other than the fundamental F1, but I'm scoring a piece right now which has thematic material that requires 2nd position low E1. I know the tuba can handle it, but I'd prefer scoring it for Cimbasso. So I'd be very thankful if you could help me and give me an idea of the quality and the difficulty in achieving this note.
Thank you so much for responding. There is some slow movement prior to the low E1, but all of it in the octave above. The low E is, however, approached by a jump/drop from B1, and of course followed by a generous rest :) But I'm fearing that the switch of position in that low register, together with the lung-power necessary for the low E will be quite a dramatic difficulty. Although, I don't mind writing something difficult, as long as it's not impossible or ill sounding.
I am a Bass trombone player soon to graduate college in music. I wish I would have seen this 10-15 years ago....I would have picked a different instrument. You're a very skilled player in addition to the glorious beard!
Fantastic arrangement. If the cimbasso can be that clear and articulate, it's a shame it's not more common. I feel like it's probably just you, though.
I asked my trombone teacher what the most obscene instrument that he ever saw was, and he told me about this, and I couldn't not search it up.
It's amazing.
Hahaha!
I meant obscure, but I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse...
I don't think there was any better way for me to find out the Cimbasso existed than by watching this video
:) Thank you!
so, a cimbasso is basically a valve bass trombone? That's amazing, and your playing was soooo good
Thank you! It's a valved contrabass trombone...
+cimbassonista Whoa, that's even cooler. I'm a bass trombone player and I've always wanted a contrabass. This is definitely what I'd get instead of a contrabass, which haag model do you use?
+Joel Domkus The one I have is not in production anymore...Franz is using a new kind of valves...the one I have has been modified as well :)

@@DJKLProductions There are slide contrabass trombones..
Great playing. Should be a million views. Thanks, Mattis!
I know you!
PancakePredator I do too!
One of the best uses for a cimbasso: when your tuba player joins the jazz band
tubas in jazz actually do exist! (as a tuba that sometimes does jazz)

I already have a euphonium and four trombones in the house, and now I want a Cimbasso - my wife doesn't like you very much.
So they mad a valve trombone and stepped on it and bent it and this is it
Contrabass valve trombone! :)
I'll tip mine along with you, Mike Mossman is great! Not only a great arranger but also a fantastic trumpet player and a great guy!
Wow! That is too cool! love it.
May I ask how you have acquired this instrument? I've had my eyes around these for a couple years and haven't found much pointing me to a direction
+Drunk people with firearms I'd imagine that a google search might do the trick...this brand is a Haag. Other good ones are Lätzsch and G & P. Meinl and Melton also build cimbassi...that's a start!
try Wessex Tubas online

It sounds like a trombone.
Maybe because it IS a trombone, albeit a contrabass valve one :)
Yazzzzzzzzzzzzzz (´∀`)

As a Tuba / Bass Trombonist, I always wanted to play a cimbasso with a jazz band.
I'm sorry to hear that, but I'll gladly take the blame, if necessary , as long as my wife likes me! :)
p.s: and she does!
This is a really great sound/technique. It looks like to tbone~cimbasso. It sounds like an F tuba me. You're really grooving with this tune ;-)
that beard....
Wow! This is amazing. Great sound and ideas!! And the arrangement is just too dope. Thanks!
Thank you, I had a lot of fun playing it!!
Fantastisk , aldrig hört av detta instrument. Härligt ljud.
no its not, its called a cimbasso. look it up.
Jazz cimbasso - now I've seen everything.
It was time, then :)
Wow!!! Your sound is very very good!!! That language!!!!!!! I liked a lot of how you play this. I like your sound. You have a lot of good technique!!! Impresionant!! Big hug Lugo, Spain

The fact mattis still reacts to every comment on this i amazing
I’m old school :)
well mainly i need help with my tuba right now i can hit low notes perfectly but when it comes to a C or higher i cant hit it for my life any tips?

Respect to jaco
It looks like a Bari-Sax and trombone made a baby. Being a trombone player I'm surprisingly okay with that.
it looks like a contrabass key trombone if such thing exists, but it got sad and it decided to bend its slide
I'd think that most professional tuba player will be able to deal with most of what you throw at them!!
Thank you so much for responding. There is some slow movement prior to the low E1, but all of it in the octave above. Well...it depends on you. range wise it should be ok, I guess...
Hehe...better than mainstream and lame ass, I guess :)
How much of a difference is there in an F tuba and a cimbasso?
i play a regular Bb tuba and im wondering would i be able to play this?
Fantastic arrangement. If the cimbasso can be that clear and articulate, it's a shame it's not more common. I feel like it's probably just you, though.
VermylionMusic :) Thank you, Mike's chart is great! I do believe the cimbasso is somewhat underrated, but I'm trying to change that, hehe...
So are the fingerings the same as a tuba?
Same as an F tuba, yes...
Enjoyed the music floats over with flutes and the rhythm
What time signature is the head in
It’s in 4/4, but there is also a 7/8 shout chorus and the head in 3/4 at the end...
Can I ask what mouthpeice that is? Also can I use it on a tuba?
Find a good teacher and work hard!
That was weird. But pretty bad ass.
Very nice and smooth. Thank you for posting this
That's a bass sax.
A lot, the range is pretty much the same but the feel is not. The Cimbasso is cylindrical, the Tuba conical with way bigger bore...
Like the differences between a cylindrical trumpet and a conical Flugel Horn. Just a couple of octaves apart.
Great sound my man adn quality accompanyment too. nice job.
And I just gotta say..... I want a vim basso
Sounds like a valved bass trombone. :P
God damn autocorrect, cimbasso.
Crazy good...imagine a section of these and tubaxes..oh Lord
It might be illegal :)
Thanks, Franck, it was fun!
This arrangement reminds me so much of Don Ellis tunes from the 60s - 70s.
:)
great!
Thank you! :)
¡ Fuckin' Cool!
Great playing Mattis, and great arrangement too.
To Cool-Luv it !!!!!!!!
Riktigt gött! Oväntat passande med cimbasso i jazz!
Splendid. Thanks a lot for the help and info.
Ich bin absolut sprachlos! Einfach nur der Hammer!!! Was für ein unglaublicher Sound!
Go for it!!
do you use the same mouthpiece for your tuba playing and bass trombone playing in the big band setting?
No, I play a Giddings & Webster on tuba/cimbasso and a Monette on the bass bone...
This is amazing. Great arrangement, great tone, just great
That is a funny looking horn. I bet it’s like a magnet for chicks! Hahahahaha
For chickens, at least!
I absolutely love this solo. Do you mind if I transcribe it and play it for my class?
Kokiriboy001 Knock yourself out :) I'm glad you like it!
Ok, now this is epic
Thank you so much
This is awesome.
I already play tenor/bass trombone, now I want to play Cimbasso!
Go for it!
Grymt!! Alla borde spela cimbasso så här;)
:)
Is this cimbasso in Bb or F?
It's in F
What's the advantage of a cimbasso over a valve trombone?
osborl12 so it’s possible to hold it without falling over
Is not vs; Is fantastically together !!!!
:)
Wowww! Fantastic!
Thank you!
Excellent chart and performance!
Thank you!
Did Mossman make this arrangement for the WDR Big Band?
Yes
cimbassonista
Cool!
Great performance, by the way! :)
You the man.
:)
That seems really hard
It was quite a bit of work! :)
I would love to see the case it comes in!
:) It's not too bad, just heavy...I use a gig bag most of the time...
Does nylons have the sheet music for the part before the main theme?
Anyone*
+Max Howling I'm sorry, I don't know what "Nylons" is...
+cimbassonista it's an autocorrected typo. I meant to write does anyone* have the sheet music?
+Max Howling I see, no, this was commissioned by WDR for the band, it's not published...
Are all cimbassos tuned in F?
No, F is the most common, but there are also Eb, CC and BBb cimbassi...
+cimbassonista oh my lord. A CC cimbasso sounds glorious
+Carson Clay It's a different sound...they use it quite a bit in Hollywood etc...players like John van Houten!
Jay and Kai would be proud
I should get a contrabass trombonium :)
Haha I guess I always assumed a trombonium was just some sort of a tenor cimbasso. What would contrabass trombonium sound like?
Enjoying the playing!
I'm a Bass Trombone Player, Last chair at my school/where ever I'm playing.
Good to know which chair I can find you at.
Great tone! i enjoyed it!
I'm a trombone player, 1st chair at my school.
I lost interest after the first note, and as soon as I paused the video, I couldn't remember any of it. Jazz is such an underwhelming experience.
Hahaha! Glad you took the time to share your experience!
No.
