All I'm going to say is: watch "They Live." (if you haven't already)
The iconic sunglassess scene from this cult classic is a transformative moment. Our protagonist puts a pair of special glasses and the world changes before his eyes-revealing hidden messages and the true faces of the aliens living among us.
This film, a sharp critique of unchecked capitalism and mass media, is - so I thought - a perfect opener for today's deep dive into Monopoly Go.
This "game" is a carefully engineered trap, a profit machine disguised in the innocent trappings of Monopoly without you realizing it. If only we had the magic spectacles to spot the wolf in sheep’s clothing, the Monopoly GO maker wouldn't have slyly pocketed $2 billion in less than a year…

They Live! is one of my favourite 80s sci-fi movies. Roddy Piper actually came up with a lot of his one-liners himself.
@@nigelchaos Yes, Roddy ma boi. So good Mr. Carpenter chose him over Kurt Russell. Giving this "guy who's just a Wrestler" a chance to explore a new creative endeavour was pretty unconventional at the time. Glad it's one of your favourites.

So, the elderly lose money on Monopoly Go and the teenagers lose money on Genshin Impact?
The boomers lose their money to their homeland, the teenagers who hate to be blind patriot lose their money to China (hint: it's worse)
Do we barely have enough money to spend on goods and services, or do we just spend all that money on video game transactions?
Those teenagers must be really stupid then, there's nothing to actually spend in Genshin
The game is too easy until the endgame dungeon and even still it's not that hard (You just have to grind for gear with the right stats, though I don't know if they've improved that aspect of the game)
@@anonanonymous9670 the main reason why people play genshin though is the characters, not the gameplay so I’m assuming they only pay for rolling for the characters in the gacha
Never played either but I would much rather give money to Genshin Impact, at least it's a actual game and not a board game in a mobile game.
I started playing Monopoly Go but quit when I realized that
1. It was spinning its wheels with things that really don't matter in the end
2. I wasn't going to be paying any money because, if I can't have full access on my accord for free, then I wasn't going to get involved.
3. My wife stopped playing and there went my interest
4. It just wasn't Monopoly. I love me some Monopoly and this wasn't it. I want to look in my opponents eyes as we sit around a table and see thier face go white when they realize they cannot pay for the hotel on my orange space. This denied me that.
I quit monopoly go because it was to repetitive and boring.😂
I can relate, I quickly realized after playing the game that it was basically a coin master copy with monopoly themes. The mobile game doesn’t carry any value to it as the original board game did, especially after learning the history behind the game. It’s just another micro-transaction game, it made me really miss the days where I could play monopoly on the gameboy and it was closer to being like the board game. With no micro-transactions if you’re low on rolls, subscriptions, battle passes, and all.
i relate mostly to reason 4. uninstalled as soon as i saw that its not really monopoly
I got a monopoly go ad on this as well
I don’t understand the “spinnings its wheels with things that really don’t matter in the end” point because, no game really matters in the end. We play games for the illusion of progress and accomplishment. This game does that very well, but it’s not any less real than any other video game. Unlocking characters in your favorite games still really doesn’t matter in the end lol we just do it for fun
As soon as you mentioned Scopely I knew it was going to be predatory to an extreme degree. I played one of their games a few years back; I had to quit after finding out how much some people were spending, it genuinely made me feel sick inside to learn.
same, i used to play stumble guys, but i quit, bc
1. To get skins, you have to gamble
2. The gameplay is copied from fall guys, and some other things from fortnite and brawl stars and maybe even other games
Why does other people’s spending habits affect how you enjoy the game?
You should be careful about being on UA-cam. Some people spend WAY too much time and money on this app…
@@PtylerBeats Why would I not support a company, and refuse to participate in their system to manipulate people into gambling and then facilitate a means for those new gambling addicts to spend outside their means because they've been conditioned by a team of physiologists? Oh, no reason; I'm just plagued by these pesky things called 'morals'.
@PtylerBeats Because, when you hear how much someone spent on a "free" game that really isn't that good or fun, it makes you aware of how addicting this game can be for some people
@@Deadclown45acp yeah, but if you enjoy the game, their addiction doesn’t really change your enjoyment. I enjoy craps, but I’m also aware that people throw their entire lives away addicted to gambling. It doesn’t change that I enjoy craps every now and then. People enjoy a beer every now and then, I don’t, but people do. We all also understand that people throw their lives away getting addicted to alcohol. It doesn’t change the fact that people can enjoy a beer every once in a while. So what does THEIR addiction make YOU enjoy the game less?
Monopoly GO is literally the opposite of what the OG monopoly stood for.
So same as teen titans go?
GO is OG backwards 🤯
The fact that the original board game it was based off of had the very opposite intentions of the original Monopoly.
Quite Literally
Monopoly GO, OG Monopoly
Seems to be exactly the same, you're playing against capitalism in both
I played this for a month and the dark patterns are HORRIBLE, everytime you run out of dice there's a pop up that tells you that you can buy more dice for a stupid high price, you close that and another "time offer" pop up appears that will give you more dice for a lower price, if you close that there's a third one telling you to invite friends and they will give you dices for it
The buy button for all of this appears in the same place as the "roll" button btw
It's absurd how many ads you get hit with. Even if you have a Google play pass, the game itself is just like BUY MOAR DICE
Same as every single mobile game
I had to play it for a cashback website offer, and it really is that bad. I didn't buy anything and didn't get far.
Funny how you call "dark patterns" all the obvious "cries" these games do for money... No. Dark patterns are in games that NEVER ask for money, they NEVER spam you with ads, they NEVER spam pop up after pop up yet people spend more and more on the cash shop. Monopoly Go (just like Coin Master) are just blatant casinos that pray on peoples gambling addiction. No "dark patterns" here, the patterns are obvious.
That sounds like the same standard we've had for a decade
I am a small content creator and got offered a ad campaign for Monopoly Go. Before I accept I wanted to understand it so I looked it up and found your video.
Thank you, now I am better informed and I wont accept it ♥
If I’m a billion dollar company and I see an op-ed UA-cam video calling out my golden goose getting ALOT of attention I too would pay UA-cam to put the ads on SPECIFICALLY that video… but of course, that’s all hypothetical
It's a video talking about the game, typical algorithm. Better help ads on better help expose videos
They can't control where the ads are placed. UA-cam probably automatically placed their ads on this video because of the demographics and it talking about a mobile game.
I would sue them if they touch my games (I own outfit7)
or pay a bit more, and play the video as ad on videos, where you are pretty sure, that they will skip it, so that the analytics will be destroyed
That's....that's not how it works.
You're calling a computer a devious mastermind, and not just....a computer
“Seemingly innocent mobile game”
At this point, I don’t assume the vast vast majority of recently released mobile game to be innocent.
I mean anything "Free" has a caveat and 90% of the apps are free
Anything that pushes microtransactions as a main feature is anything but innocent.
The fact that a game meant to teach the exploitative nature of capitalism now makes more than a casino is the American Dream.
PS: Who knew that even the mildest Monopoly joke would set off the Screaming Right?
yeah it lived long enough to become what it meant to teach
Even the board game itself - its meaning was completely lost to the public, and its owners became monopolists themselves through its success
Let's face it. If you understand the satire of monopoly, you're playing better board games.
@@OdaSwifteye I'd rather play almost any other game.
There are NOWHERE enough of these sort of videos.
The quality of this video is insane, the research behind it is accurate and you said everything in a very clean manner.
Everyone is pointing out how you have a small amount of subscribers compared to the quality brought to this channel, and while I agree, I'm more surprised by the amount of views your videos get. The way modern games are tricking players is not talked about enough, everyone should be aware of what they are putting themselves into. Hopefully one day your channel grows enough to actually make a difference.
Monopoly is now basically becoming the very thing it was criticizing and satirizing is so hilariously sad, it brings a tear to my eye.
No greater sin than irony.
One note: whales usually don’t refer to people who spend hundreds of dollars on apps.
They refer to people who spend thousands or even TENS of thousands on apps. These are people with extremely heavy credit card debt from these apps and very heavy gambling addictions. The truth is that all it takes a relatively small amount of whales to really make an app successful
Have you seen the whales in Diablo immortal!? They spend over $100,000 for some fluffy wings on their character. It’s madness!
Those people deserve to be poor
Scale is relative. The phrase "whale" means big spender. What qualifies that is relative to what most others are spending. The majority of people in a casino are spending far more than the majority of people on pay to play apps. So the bar for what qualifies you as a whale is much lower in those latter environments.
@@st1ckman456 I would guess 10% of pay should be considered a whale since that is in most cases a lot of money for that person.
thats why you dont wanna get a ticket in switzerland
The scope of that word has broadened to the point where their goal is to make everyone a whale, and a regular spender. This game is not being held up by a small amount of whales, and neither are most popular mobile games. Whales tend to only keep smaller games alive with less scope, such as old MMO's, etc.
I honestly don't see how this app could even be considered a game. There's no decision making, no skill, no anything. You just push one button and watch a piece move in a circle. There's literally no game.
Yea, I tried it for a day and was amazed at how there is nothing to do. Like, there wasn't even any illusion of any strategy.
I played for about a month, there is some variation of strategy, but it's mostly just to make the most out of your moves. Didn't spend a cent, and I got bored eventually
Monopoly in the beginning was kind of a teaching game to show kids how unfair capitalism is and that getting rich is mostly dependent on luck. It came full cycle I guess.
@@cyan_oxy6734 You’re right the communism game will be much more exciting. You just move around not buying anything and when you reach the start you just get a loaf of bread rinse and repeat.
@@polarbear1713you couldn’t be more wrong, strategy and planning is a very key part to the game. People who don’t use strategy and planning are the ones spending all the money. I’ve never spent a dime or used any of the glitches to hoard dice, but instead I plan how I utilize dice and how I do my rolls. Which it’s getting worst with the latest event since Scopely noticed the strategy people use and changed event payouts.
Absolutely true. Also, they had a good game for a while in order to get reviews up, then slowly made it more and more addictive and harder to get their stickers... now the 2 million reviews are 5 stars.. meaning anyone second guessing will only see a top rated product. They know every strategy possible to be scumbags. These sort of companies should be heavily regulated and its insane how gambling has so much regulation and protective laws for people who spend money but these games do not. Things need to change
Lol there is no skill in monopoly go. In fact i don't think there has ever been a game that uses less player ability . i cannot imagine people playing a shittier version of the game. Like for real...... you literally just roll dice. wtf is wrong with you all .At least waste your money on a game that you actually do something.
Funny how the Pokemon games had to have a casino where you spent in-game money only (and was rigged in your favor) removed to avoid a T/PEGI 12 rating simply because it was in the style of a slot machine, while these games can use all the addictive tricks of REAL casinos to make billions (sometimes even using the slot machine imagery!) and get away with an everyone/9+ rating and no oversight.
really, what sets apart this game and other f2p games, is the lack of actual game here. Most of other f2p games at least have a neat gameplay or an interssing story to them. here its just... trying to get people to donate
You've overlooked one of the biggest and most important regulations on casinos, and slot machines in particular. Slot machines MUST be set to a constant payout rate and changing that rate to make it either richer (more frequent payouts) or leaner (less frequent payouts) must be authorized by a gaming commission. This is absolutely critical because the very best way to get a person hooked on a behavior (slot machine, gaming app, or anything else for that matter) is to start with a very rich payout scheduling (even operating at a loss) and then slowly lean it out over time until the person is addicted and hemorrhaging money. Every casino on the planet would do this given the opportunity but don't because they'd be penalized beyond its utility. Because that consequence does not exist for them, every single gaming app does it as well.
Fun fact: Raid Shadow Legend's studio is actually owned by a casino they bought when they decided they needed a way to indoctrinate kids into gambling. They brought on addiction specialists and crafted the game around and then went scorched earth advertising on every youtube channel you've ever seen. The game, is literally owned to extract money....from children

Of ALL the evil things in this world, predatory gambling mechanics is among the absolute worst. It destroys lifes. Lifes that could've been just fine, if they were not to encounter anything would lead them to addiction.
I don't say that it's other peoples responsibility to not expose you to gambling. But realize that these massive companies SPECIFICALLY targets weak individuals, because they know they can exploit them.
If that's not pure evil, I don't know what is.
Excellently put together, and very thought provoking Belinda. I've designed multiple published board games, and your video made me reflect on how we use dopamine triggers as lovingly implemented tools to enhance the fun of our games. And those same tools that can make people smile and laugh and play (push your luck, random reward cycles, community and social interaction), can drive people to poverty, addiction and loneliness the moment those interactions become monetised. This isn't a board game as I know it, it's a skinner box, you're right.
Great video - looking forward to seeing where you go with your next. ☺
I used to work for a company that had an official Monopoly merchandise e-shop few years back. We weren't connected to this game at all, the company just bought rights to the boardgame logo and stuff like that and made merchandise with it. I cannot even explain the gut-wrenching calls we would get from people that were ruined by this game. People will call desperately crying begging to have some of their money back and we would have to explain we had no connection to the game or Hasbro or whoever it is that created this evil app and they wouldn't want us to get off the phone! Kept begging and begging and begging to not hang up and to please help them. Honestly it was heart-breaking.
I think that really speaks to the lack of digital literacy. While plenty of digitally literate people can become addicted it's a lot easier to spot a scam like this when you recognize the techniques being used. If you can't even figure out who the game developers are (which is not only really simple but also useful to help avoid their other products in the future) how are you going to recognize the manipulative techniques being used?
I mean they are the ones paying so kinda responsible for their actions
@@TheSporetik yeah they are but also the game is hiding extremely predatory tactics behind this "family friendly" facade. Basically a casino that also allows kids. Games like this *need* to be regulated
Are you talking about monopoly go? Like they spent tons of money on that app and came crying to you for their money back? because MG just made a year this April so I'm just confused about the dates.
@@SHEIFFY I worked for this company in 2021 (I'm in UK btw) so I'm not sure if it was exactly this game or a previous version of it, but it definitely was as predatory as this if it wasn't exactly this. The reason they would call us is because they would probably google Monopoly customer service and the company I worked for has a bunch of branded e-shops and does bespoke merchanside as well so our phone number was on the "contact us" page of the Monopoly merchandise e-shop. As it was officially licensed by Hasbro I guess they tought there's some kind of "monopoly" company for everything, the merch, the board game, the apps etc and just call whatever phone number they could find connected to Monopoly. I'll do some research and figure out if it was this specific game or another Monopoly branded casino kind of game and report back
Just tested this game recently, motivated by news about marketing budget and revenue. For me the most "amazing" part is how well the predictive analytics / personalized offers are tuned. This game basically tries to profile you (or use an already known profile of you from Facebook / Google) as fast as possible to make you pay just a little bit. As soon as someone buys even just the lowest offer it starts to go really hard to milk that juicy sunken cost fallacy in you. Time pressure / FOMO on the left, Peer pressure / social pressure / competition on the right, battle pass like systems, collections to complete. And at the end it's a game about pushing one button, for boards of different colors.
Yup! And voila, $2Bn cashed in. 🫠
Haven't made it through the entire video, but also worth noting that the more you buy packs, the more expensive they get with diminishing returns.
And games now start labelling this low offer as “your first purchase” or similar, as they know you’ll be making more after.
The real way to play Monopoly is the N64 version, obviously.

i just realized, monopoly go is a copy of an already existing mobile game, Board Kings. everything from the concept to the ui looking incredibly similar, even the sticker album is something that was already in Board Kings (it’s called the same thing too). and yet, it’s somehow less manipulative than monopoly go
I used to play Board kings for years, it has its issues but it has more personallity in its game then Monopoly Go ever did, and even now Monopoly go seems to be getting cheaper with its assets in game
THANK YOU nobody acknowledges that this game is just a copy of another game and it bothers me so much
Thank you for reminding me! When I first started playing MoGo I noticed how similar it was to a game I used to play but I forgot what it was called. I’m addicted to MoGo but I wasn’t addicted to Board Kings and I think that’s because with board kings (at the time, not sure if it changed now) you had the option to watch ads in order to get a bit more dice and they didn’t bombard you with ads consistently to pay for more dice.

It's mediocre, bland and if you want you can sunk thousands of dollars into it but at least you have a game that can be played for free if you really want. There aren't any "special", "99x value," time offers that expire in 20 minutes, every time limited event has a predefined monthly duration. Majority of players are light spenders that only buy monthly subscription or don't buy anything. On the other hand playing monopoly or other similar "games" is completely pointless unless you are a spender and buy offers everyday. Don't get me wrong - genshin is also making money from addicts, but is not as half as predatory as games like coin master
most of gachapon games don’t requre actual money though
Its crazy to as the game still has a glitch that you can practically predict where you will land next
Getting a monopoly go ad on this video when I have never seen one before makes me wonder if it was done on purpose
This feels like a video made by a channel much bigger than
finally I found a comment that says what I was thinking, this video is fantastic and I love the effort and skill clearly put into it.
That reference in the opening is brilliant.
Very Good video thank you for all the information and clearing what happens to Many people
Your channel is so good mate. I predict 1 million subs within the next two years.
its a great thing someone found out that the rolls are pre determined and you can just put your phone in airplane mode, write them down, delete the data and then you can basically beat the game and never pay money.
I went from 600 dice to 30k by gaming a system that was rigged
Can you explain in more detail?
@@MK8MasterJunjieif you can’t figure out how just by this piece of information it’s not for you
@@MK8MasterJunjie since the rolls are predetirmed, you can roll while having airplane mode on to see future rolls without spending dice. Search Shawna Monopoly Go for the full tutorial on it because it’s more complicated than that
@@MK8MasterJunjieI suggest looking up some yt videos about it, that’s what I did and it was a big help!
Playing such games with ADHD may be either a blessing or a curse: a curse _if_ it manages to hook you in and gets your hyperfocus, while also being really inattentive and constantly starved for dopamine anyways; or a blessing because you're too inattentive to invest any real effort into playing such things and quit very early on, so it makes those dark tactics ineffective against you.
HONESTLY YEAH. I tend to phase in and out of interests in games and this alone usually steers me away from purchasing anything. At least nothing super big. I usually stick with smaller things that're under $10, and even then it's me being like, "do I have the money and how invested in this am I currently?" I can stick around for a few months but still tend to avoid buying stuff, haha. I am Immune to the Game Addiction /hj
the real problem is that the legal system is about 20 years behind where it needs to be
also studies show that gamers are more likely to have addictive personalities
Nice "They Live" reference and great video with awesome production value! Subbed!
I was shown a Monopoly Go youtube ad before i got to even start watching your video 😂
Whaaaaat really?!? Hahaha omg. This world…😑😑😑
You watch ads??? Why?
@@Xvladin nah, of course I try and skip them
@@zubair1149 Why do you even see them? Why don't you block ads?
@@Xvladin I can't do that on the UA-cam app on my phone
Amazing video. I love your investigative journalist style! Subscribed :)
I don’t know why UA-cam recommended this channel to me, but I wish it did earlier. This is great, relevant content in the two videos I’ve watched of yours. Easy sub and looking forward to more. Well done.
This game be giving gambling addictions on a daily basis like its nothing
It became the monster it swore to destroy
I recently noticed I was getting bombarded with Monopoly GO ads as I was playing Beatstar and then I get recommended this video lol. I’m grateful that my usual reaction to a wait timer is to just close the app and that my ADHD causes me to forget about the game for days and only sees me returning when I’m bored out of my mind at the doctor’s office or something. Though I’ve always been a bit wary of mobile games in general because the ones my friends play all seem to be some form of gatcha game or something like this, gambling in disguise.
Hey, amazing editing! I am looking for more of your vids
I've got a strict rule when it comes to f2p games with microtransactions: never spend more on it than i would be willing to pay to buy it if it was an actual game. Usually this is around ten quid or so, and I refuse to go above. (And thats for games like Genshin, ie it has an actual game to play not just dice to roll). But the actual concept of it and how it preys on people still makes me uncomfortable. You should always remember: if its free to pay, thats because you are the product. Great video!
Even then they're still making retail cash off of you. If it's a mobile game with obvious patterns to manipulate you then they don't deserve a dime let alone anyone playing it
This reminds me of that South Park episode where satan teaches Stan about addiction to mobile game in app purchases. Great video!
Satan being better than God real?
@@paolarei4418 he plays rust so idk
Just got an ad for the “game” in question. What a time to be alive.
I've never seen an ad for Monopoly Go before until I watched this video.
This is the most hilarious title I heard in awhile.
A game about draining virtual money from your fellow friends is draining your real money as you play.
"Scopely made mobile game history by making $2B in less than a year!"
Hoyoverse : *"Amateurs!"*
its really impressive if u dont market it towards china or india, these two are the cheat code for marketing media
except hoyoverse hasnt made 2b in a year on their mobile games
i just have a moral obligation to not let myself download a game if i see too many ads of it
such a great video! I’m definitely subscribing! :)
That's a tough pillow to sallow.
Awhile ago i got stuck on one of those gatcha square enix games and was spending money i shouldn’t. Eventually i decided it was too much money so i only play mobile games that teach me things now. I have literally become fluent in Swedish so i have something to show for my time haha this monopoly go situation is just sick. This is such a problem with mobile games and there needs to be some kind of regulation
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Games without purchases or with a single purchase to remove ads are a pretty safe bet
what is this app that you can become fluent in another language?
@@noob2pro290 I used 2 Rosetta Stone and Babbel
@@noob2pro290 I used two the first was Rosetta Stone which gave me a foundation, teaches you like a child. But the second one Babbel is about grammar
I expected to find something more interesting, but what I got was just what every free mobile game does to get money from you.
If I want portable Monopoly, I just play the DS game for free
i believe that video games that set limits on your progress where you have to either wait or pay to keep playing should be illegal
And why are they allowed to gather so much private information anyway? I looked through some and one wanted to look through my bank statements...
@@TeruteruBozusama Those infos are sold off at high margins to other middlemen and end up at businesses whose job is to provide targeted advertising. Even if using an ad blocker makes your information worthless to them
So COC should be illegal to right?
@@Kanookoochn correct.
Wait until you hear about Clash Of Clans 😈
UA-cam recommend me this video. I never knew your channel before but your video is spot on and well documented and with great visuals. I wish you the best of success moving forward!
I remember when I pre registered Monopoly Go, I was hyped thinking it was like the normal monopoly but you play on your phone and online with random people or friends, and the micro transactions would be just cosmetics or something like that, I was so wrong
Hey Belinda! Great video 😊
4:10 HASBRO! Release the Kevin Hart Monopoly Version! The go to jail spot is replaced with "Lose Oscar Hosting Job"
😂😂
"whales. people who spend hundreds of dollars"
oh my sweet summer child. you've got the spirit but you are WAAAAY off. hundreds is a dolphin 😂
low hundreds is casual`
@jonathandpg6115 well shoot. what's a dolphin anymore if low hundreds ain't even dolphin territory? or are you saying they're low end whales at that point?
I'd be willing to pay Monopoly Go amounts of money to ensure that 𝚘𝙷 𝙼𝚢 𝚜𝚆𝚎𝙴𝚝 𝚜𝚄𝚖𝙼𝚎𝚁 𝙲𝚑𝙸𝚕𝙳 was never uttered by anyone ever again.
@@TheKayasto suppose it depends on the game and personal opinion, there's no objective standard
@williamlavelle4371 fair enough. 100$ could be whaling out if that's a lot for a specific game. then there's hoyoverse games...some of those folks dropping 4 figures on a single banner 💀
They live reference as the intro was amazing xD
I thought you were visual venture for a second, and for a minute I still thought you were. Very high quality video I love it
How you only have 2k subscribers is criminal. I appreciate the straight information no “humor” just information and matter of fact. Some may call it boring but I find it refreshing. And that I to was insane very nice

Thank you for your content and raising awareness. I have had loved ones be caught in this type of scam games and I'm terrified that we don't have the knowledge and tools as a society to ward off these addictions.
Good video, keep making these essays!
hey I just wanted to say how well this video is made both in the topic but i also very much appreciate the great production and the great writing and delivery. Great Job!
Thats why I love Apple Arcade. Genuinely fun mobile games without any gamble, in-app-purchases and ads.
There’s a beautiful layer of irony behind a game called Monopoly trying to get a ‘monopoly’ on players money.
I’ve never gotten a monopoly go ad till this video, UA-cam thinking I’m interested in that app 🤣
Turning players into payers 😂
