    I've been wanting to do this comparison for a long time and finally got ahold of a Beta58a (for science.) I think it sounds brighter and more detailed- what do you think?

  • @Rancherinaz
    @Rancherinaz 3 роки тому +9

    The difference is negligible . I still prefer the tried and true SM58 . For my voice which verges on almost baritone from tenor , I still prefer the SM58 Everything can be adjusted at the board . As far as price , I can get 3 SM58's and have lunch at the cafe nextdoor for what 2 Beta 58's cost .

    • @Rancherinaz
      @Rancherinaz 2 роки тому

      @Emerito, Professor of Love!
      That’s a riot . 😆
      These are stage mics for live use and not anything that one would be using for a studio vocal track . I mean unless you’re a garage jockey . Sound better 😆More hits 😆
      The difference between the two is negligible at best and subjective while settings at the board make a bigger difference in what comes out of the cones than you’ll ever achieve between the two mics . Then there’s the listener which will never be able to garner up any definition between the two even if all other aspects are equal .

    Thank you for your video! Interesting... this is the second comparison in which I noticed, that Shure Beta 58A actually does a better job in rejecting handling noises, compared to the Shure SM58. Now i wonder, how the Shure SM58 would fare against the Behringer BA85A. That one is not great for handling noise either. Lets see, if I can find a comparison between those two somewhere.

    Here is the biggest problem I've come across with most amateur producers and bands etc They look for a mic and ways for the singer to sit in the mix.....This is totally stupid no professional producer ever does this, You must build the whole song and mix around the singer or else your putting the cart before the horse. Think Kenny G, Acker Bilk is a perfect example, go listen to stranger on the shore, it was a world wide hit back in the day, he was the Kenny G of his generation, but he played the Clarinet people always say they can't get the Clarinet to sound good in a mix it's not meant to. You need to tailor the whole song instrumentation EQ to fit in with support and make that lead instrument blend and shine modern mixing technieques focus on the whole mix too much and not the goal.

      022100bmlotus bandmates turning down the lead singer in the mix??? Let me talk to them for you 😡 LOL but yes both of these mics are legendary for their durability and reliability, if you’ve got the extra cash the Beta does offer somewhat more premium build features and a slightly more sparkly high end as you could see here, which may help you in cutting through a dense mix, but honestly if someone’s intent on meddling with your levels in the mix you’re going to have trouble no matter what you’re using

    I bought Shure SM 58 beta. Today I tested my Shure PGA58 with 58 Beta and i didn't find much difference of sound eventhough Beta58 price is nearly 3 times more than PGA58. Am I doing something wrong?

    • @matteliasmusic
      @matteliasmusic  4 роки тому +1

      shammishafi09 probably not doing anything wrong- but the differences in those mics are pretty stark, the PGA is basically a very entry level mic as I understand it. Differences would include overall build quality, durability, handling noise rejection, the beta 58a has a built-in pop filter where the PGA really doesn’t, as well as frequency response (the beta will be slightly better at picking up certain frequencies). I can certainly understand your disappointment if you had an expectation of like a night and day difference in sound quality being immediately recognizable- maybe what you’re looking for is the sound of some kind of a condenser mic? Depending on what your application is of course

      Layarion hey there, thanks! You certainly could, I would recommend having it closer to the sound source (you) if possible when using dynamic mics like this, that way you could avoid having to crank up the gain too much and have a slightly messier recording. For streaming or voiceover while gaming, i could recommend going with something like a Blue Yeti, in a similar price range with these, and as a bonus it’s got a USB output so you could skip the interface and go right into your computer if you like. A condenser mic like that would be my pic for that application, if you want the mic out of the shot and away from your face. I have owned a Yeti for several years and it works great for that kind of thing, it’s even what I use for video conferencing as well.

      thanks! didn't test these with other applications this time since they're primarily vocal mics, but they are absolutely very versatile!

    When you sang through the SM58 you sound like Bon Jovi. The Beta sounds crap on your voice.

      SeanPatrickGreat HAHA there’s a comparison I’ve never gotten before, thank you, Jon BJ is a badass! What is it about the 58 that you like better?

      @@matteliasmusic Ha Ha loved your reply
      The Beta sounds better to the singer most of the time because people.dont hear their voices like others do, when it's your own voice people tend to want more sibilance. Many male UA-camrs who want that news anchor sound, turn the mids up and sit on top of the mic, and it just sounds fake and annoying but to the guy on the Mike he sounds more "manly" Adrian I love you... But in real life they sound nothing like a sudo Barry White. Its like bad Photoshop for your voice. You look prettier but at the same time weird.
      Professional Voice over artists and professionals on tv never do this Why......
      For a Michael Bublé swing voice or a lower voice the Beta often sounds Beta I mean better. But on a voice like Bono or Bonjovi the SM58 would sound better. And for that Oasis or Jon Lennon sound a slightly higher male voice with less power the SM57 sounds better.
      You could talk of hours about this one way or the other..... PEACE OUT!
