You're definitely using a lemon for your sm58. I've compared them too and it's not that weak, it's every bit as loud as the beta58. Shame since it's the benchmark for all mics, you really needed a properly working one

I remember the first time I did a live mix with a Beta58. We also had a couple of SM58s on the stage too. The Beta58 was so much easier to get a good vocal out of. It was like a veil had been lifted off the sound, crisp clear high ends, so easy to mix. Really put the SM58s in the shade. Not tried the V7 yet, it’s much cheaper so will definitely be checking it out.

I'm a post-pro engineer who has moved into live sound reinforcement in the last 8 years. Here's what I'll say:
I've used SM58s for years. Absolute workhorse, not the best mics but it's never the wrong choice. The one used in this video may well have had some problems, I haven't had issues with having to gain them up excessively like you had to.
Beta 58: Older models are great, newer models aren't up to the same quality as what they were making 20 years ago. Also not a fan of how bright they are, kinda painful for female vocalists.
AKG D5: Never been impressed. Have used a handful of times and it's always been unmemorable. Not bad, not great, about on par with the 58 IMO. It'll do the job, but I don't see why you'd buy it.
e835: Basically a 58 but a bit darker, really like them on female vocalists with prominent sibilance.
Beta 87: Never had a good experience with these. Have only used when vocalist brought their own, and it never performed any better than an SM58. Better highs, but I hate sibilance and almost always end up shelving it out. So what's the point?
sE V7: Hands down, the best vocal mic I've used in a live setting. In a studio, there are better options (which cost 5x-20x more), but the V7's response plus the off-axis rejection beats out the beta 58 just slightly. When you factor in the price, it's unbeatable. Have not found a case where they don't work, and have never had to spend more than about 20 seconds ringing them because of the rejection. Hell, they're even great for studio work. Highly recommend. I'll be moving to V7's as my primary vocal mic very soon.
Handling noise has largely been a non-issue. Yes, it's something to consider, but most vocalists I've worked with in the last decade have moved to not handling the mic directly and instead handling the stand. Any mic listed performs just fine in this case with a simple hi-pass at about 80hz or higher. I will say, the newer b58's have absolutely atrocious handling noise and are a nightmare to work with if you have a vocalist who insists on holding the chassis.

I find the sm58 to produce a thin sound compared to the D5 which gives a fuller sound. I have used the D5 for years as a working muso and love them.

Liked the SE V7 and Beta 58. Thank you for the great comparison. It was exceptional for someone trying to purchase a mike as this is one of the harder things to compare. For the price I would get the SE but that is just my opinion. The SM58 to my ears was probably the worst.

Thinking about getting a V7 in the future, but I'm kinda considering the AKG D5 right now as I found someone selling them about $30 USD cheaper than the V7.

are you using a SE V7 or a V7x? Judging by the grill, it seems to be a V7x and that one is very plosive sensitive indeed.

    • @derMist_Official
      @derMist_Official 2 роки тому +1

It’s the V7, the foam is interchangeable for black foam which gives the grill a different look, could possibly be that. I think they have a similar frequency response with V7X having more bottom end which could explain why the plosives could be worse. But a few months on, I love the V7 for live vocals, solid bit of kit

SM58 uses alnico magnets and is cardioid, the others are all using neodymium magnets and are super cardioid. Get a better preamp and the SM58 will perform better with less hiss. SM58 sounded best for your voice in my opinion!

Your guitar was way too loud for me to hear clearly what these mics are doing on your singing. Hopefully, this improved in subsequent videos. The Beta 58A is a much better mic than the SM58. Much hotter mic for sure.Almost all mics have proximity effect. Only one mic I know that doesn't have much of a proximity effect and I can't remember the brand right now. But it's some special technology that almost completely eliminates it. In fact, all the other mics are much better than the SM58, which is muddy and has a "closed" sound. The AKG-D5 has a good mix of top, middle and low end.
With the sE V7 and AKG-D5, both Supercardioid mics, you definitely need to have disciplined mic technique (staying in line with the capsule) but if you're someone who likes to be a little more free to move around a bit when singing, then a Cardioid mic is much better for you as the pickup pattern is a good bit wider than Supercardioid mics. I know this is 3 years ago but in case you didn't know, the AKG-D5 is also available as a Cardioid mic, the AKG-D5C (the one you have here is the Supercardioid version) :)

So that I can record and mix later. My room is not sound proof. My total budget is $300. But a shopkeeper told me that you cannot do recording with dynamic mic. Please tell me what should I do. Tell me such a mic and audio interface that I will not regret after buying.

    • @igooog

You can absolutely record with a dynamic. Anyone who tells you otherwise is probably getting a commission.
I recommend the V7 for basically any vocal application. That'll run you $100US. For the interface, a 3rd gen Scarlett will do just fine, and you'll still have money for a short cable and a solid set of headphones.
