    The Voth had technology that even the Borg knew to avoid, and they had transwarp drive that could have taken them to Earth in a matter of days, if not hours.
    This episode demonstrates that B.S. is a true universal constant.
    Chakotay's speech ranks right behind the final log entry of Lt. John Kelly ("One Small Step") when he calls out to his father, facing death, knowing that his father won't be there to catch his son...one last time.
    That one makes me cry...

      The Voth swooping in to save Earth, or any Earth-based ship or crew (better if its outta frickin' nowhere) is a stroke of cathartic genius. Lending gravity to an old and probably forgotten (by many Trekkies) storyline that could tie a great Voyager concept into one of the newer series while being beautifully humbling.
      Seriously, as someone who appreciates every Trek series and movie from TOS to Discovery and Picard, now that I've read this i think it's essential.

      @@CompletingTheShelf if you put it like that and let people's minds wander where you don't want them to, yes some people might think it's silly. I still don't see the silly though from the concept/premise alone. This isn't Ray Harryhausen in the 1930s after all or better yet Sid and Marty Krofft; it could have been very silly or even cheesy from that perception. If you only say "dinosaurs in space", some idiots out there are going to go off the chain thinking of an actual fully-formed prehistoric Tyrannosaurus wearing a spacesuit with a bubble helmet from the 1950s sci-fi. But when I think of that premise, that cheesy thought is very much not what I think of first.

    In my perspective, this episode was more about law and political power than it was about religion.
    Yes the parallel here is Galileo before the inquisition.
    But at one point one of the saurians mentions their law is based on this whole idea of being there first.
    So even if you were open minded and could accept the Distant Origin theory, there were drastic changes that would have to be made to their law to accommodate this theory.

    • @CompletingTheShelf
      @CompletingTheShelf  4 роки тому +7

      Oh, it is definitely about law and political power too! The danger is that they were unwilling to even entertain the theory. But isn't it great that an episode of TV can prompt a conversation on such a serious, meaningful issue?

    I always felt like this episode was a missed opportunity for the series to add another unique crew member to Voyager in the form of the Saurian scientist. Rather than being forced to rescind his beliefs to save the crew of Voyager, what if he was exiled for his 'heresy' instead? He could be allowed to travel with Janeway and act as a set of eyes for his people as Voyager makes the long journey back home. He could struggle with the crew, catch up on all of the discoveries the Federation has made, see the situation with his religious society being repeated throughout history and the universe like a cruel joke and realizing there was no way to open up his people to free thinking and see them as lost causes. And when he finally sees earth, the birthplace of his people, can you imagine the joy he would feel, the fulfillment of finally reaching the journey's end with Janeway and the others? He would have his irrefutable proof and the ability to call his people home, or at least those that were open to the possibility. Would be considered a hero or a heretic? We will never know, but we can dream.

    There are three paleontological inconsistencies with this episode at about 1:21. They call the creature "Eryops" and claimed it was a reptile that lived in the Devonian period. Eryops was actually an labyrinthodont amphibian that lived during the late Carboniferous period to the early Permian period. The third inconsistency: the creature that was displayed in the holodeck wasn't an Eryops but looked like a Gorgonopsid. Just FYI

    Expressing your religious beliefs has caused me to not subscribe. I found it confusing and distracting, especially since Star Trek promotes and demonstrates through their ST characters that - in the future - humans have socially evolved to not need the many ignorance-based and fear-based social norms we have today - like the average person's belief in an imaginary god(s) that controls everything. Thousands of different gods, goddesses and various animals or objects have been worshipped by humans since we started trying to explain our world around us and how we fit in this world. Books of faith was ONE way to do that. If we could focus our efforts more on the ways ALL humans are the same and not keep pointing out how this group of people are different than theses groups of people, we maybe (one day) get to live the wonderful future we all could have and share, like the characters in ST. I realize that Science Fiction writers use contemporary issues like religious strife among cultures as a backdrop for their stories, but it may be better to decide if the goal of your channel is proselytizing or spending all of your efforts on talking about ST because you do great work and your writing is top-notch (better than mine). I'm not attacking your right to express yourself, but I also have the right not to come back. Peace.

      I respectfully disagree. Faith can and does work alongside reason. In fact, many scientists have been religious. More than that, reason itself can be said to be based upon an act of faith whereas it is impossible to prove that what our brains and senses tell us has any true connection to actual reality without relying upon our brains and senses to prove it. In other words, we cannot independently verify anything our brains and senses tell us and thus reason which relies upon what our brains and senses tell us is in fact dependent upon the leap of faith that what our brains and senses tell us are actually true.

      The Voth had millions of years worth of evolution before the Chixlub event, plus 65 million years afterwards.
