Imagine artifacts being stolen during colonial times and the colonizer saying they are willing to loan the stolen artifacts to the country of origin for a period of 3 or 6 years🤯🤯🤯. I have no words😤
The repatriation of these cultural artifacts marks a significant step towards restoring a more complete understanding of our nation’s history. After years of being held in foreign collections, their return allows us to reconnect with the full narrative of our heritage, which has long been fragmented by external forces.
Can England return the human remains of our people that are sitting in museums like they’re some sort entertainment item. These are our loved ones,we’d also love all the cultural items ransacked during the early massacre of my people like spears shields ceremonial head wear etc. These belong on land and hold extremely significant value. Sadly England refuses to give anything back that stolen from anywhere in the world-thieves.
I'd say that when *90 plus percent* of Africa's artifacts are in "Western" museums well *into the 21st century,* that should be a pretty good gauge for whether we have _"made progress in restitution."_ Has that 90+ percent number gone down to 80%, 75%, or below? Then the answer should be obvious: negligible to no progress!
Any artifacts of others should be returned (upon request and ability to care for such items) with equally important items from your own culture to share and have upon display so that they can also gain some appreciation for other people's cultures. Its important not to become totally closed minded and racist, and close bordered too, but share your culture and wealth if such whether it be music, dance, arts or your past with others.
22:12 It is unclear what bearing the Benin Kingdom's "slave trade"-the trend in ancient times-has on the restitution of Benin artifacts to their place of origin. Should the United States, Britain, or any of the other colonial economies lose their artifacts and cultural symbols because these countries thrived on slavery, land grabs, rape, genocide, and population displacements outside their borders? Should it be a license to rob Britain of its stone hedges? Or France, of its Eiffel Tower, for which one can make a direct correlation to colonial theft by arguing that it was built on the misery and at the expense of Haitians and other colonized peoples?🤷🏾♂
The housing of African artifacts in "Western" museums does several things: It allows "Western" countries to control or *stir the narratives* of Africa's historical heritage as they see fit. The artifacts serve as tangible evidence of the past. Those who own them will have the means to analyze them to their satisfaction and share information of their choice. For centuries, "Western" countries have written history for Africans, the way they wanted it and how they wanted it! Africans had little to no say in the matter or lacked the microphone to tell it their way. Europeans put themselves on a pedestal and appointed themselves the arbiters of _"what is African"_ and _"what isn't African"_ history. As such, they declared themselves the _"authority"_ on what Africans should value as their _"own history"_ and, in this sense, had the authority to *balkanize and carve* history _"into"_ or _"out of"_ ("no-go" redlines) Africa. For example, they've spent much time and energy conditioning Africans to view _"Ancient Egypt"_ as _alien_ to Africa and _"Nubia"_ as the northernmost frontier of _"true"_ African history. Colonialism is not limited to land grabs and economic theft; it extends to cultural theft. Speaking of economic theft, storing Africa's artifacts in "Western" museums also rewards the host countries _economically._ It boosts their tourism industries! The fact that Africans have to make expensive trips to the "West" plays into this. It translates into additional income denied to Africans that flows to the "West" instead.
These countries should accept the "loan" of their cultural objects, and just not return the items. What can those European countries do? If they sue or invade (again) it will make them look worst than they already do.
One rich dude is what you want to complain about? The Chinese government considers everything within its borders to be in its possession and have not only looted ancient burials and memorials, but its own people multiple times of every single belonging including shrines and prayer beads, then sells them on the internet to people who never could put two and two together.

Colonial mindset these days is so upsetting. When will it end?
