To vote for next week's deck (or to leave an angry comment about scooping with a lethal Myr Battlesphere on board) head over to the article on the site! www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/against-the-odds-storm-the-vault-modern
That terrible feeling when Saffron Olive doesn't realize that Myr Battlesphere attacks for 12 so he doesn't attack for lethal and scoops instead in game one. AHHHHHHH!
I mean I get it. You're a content producer so you don't want to keep playing when you "know" you're about to lose but cmon man. Read the damn cards I think I speak for everyone here when I say we would MUCH rather see slightly slower play if it means you don't make south horrible terrible punts.
ah. Yeah I thought Myr Battlesphere did something with the Myr tokens that might've been lethal but figured it only pumped and I was mistaken because Seth didn't do it lol. Give Seth every card possible and he'll make a great deck, tell him to play and he'll make it look awful xD
Yah, that one was arguably a misplay - not sure if I would go as far as to call it a "punt", but it didn't seem like the ideal line of play (if conceding can even be considered a line of play).
Thank god we finally have another Modern Against the Odds. I am not a fan of the awful standard format so for these last couple weeks I have been suffering from Saffron Olive withdrawal. Hopefully we see more Modern content from here on out! Great video Seth, the deck was pretty sweet!
He had 15 because hangarback walker had to die for him to have 16 mana. Opponent bolting the Hangarback was, funnily enough, the one mana he needed to have 16 for X=14.
He didn't have 15 mana when he said that. He had 14 (6 from artifacts and 7 other lands, plus a treasure token). He didn't need 16 mana anyway because he had 3 power on board (taking them to 11). Bolting the Hangarback changed nothing really, but it did produce more mana. It was lethal no matter how you slice it from how I read into it. Maybe I'm missing something here.
Hey seth, you should get an animation to split between games. Something simple like the goldfish you used to put at the end of videos of your games would do perfectly. I just feel I'm watching just one really long game without the splits (?
I like this idea, just don't make it too long though, 1 second is enough. Also it would be nice to have timestamps for every match in the Against the Odds series as well.
I could see a visual cue being somewhat helpful for the hearing impaired. But he does announce a new match each time and you should notice that the match ending screen after each match. Nvm make more fishes!
with future videos, will you please include the start times for each match and what the opposing deck is? it's easier to commit to these long videos if i know that i can skip past the matches i have less interest in, and it's helpful as a viewer to know what we're up against before i go in. thank you! and thanks again for all the great content!
This is a good question. I've been putting time-stamps for a non-Against the Odds videos in the description. Wasn't sure about Against the Odds, since it has always been one long video.
yeah, i noticed that, and thank you! seeing the stamps on the other videos made me realize i wanted it for ATO as well :) the only extra step would be to add the opposing deck as part of the link, or next to the link, so the folks who like separate videos can interact with the content in the way they like, but you still get to put out the big long video for yourself and your viewers who like the one-stop content thanks again :)
I'm pretty sure all these punts from all of Seth's video's are leading to a new punt best of series that will bring us joy instead of pain, its all going according to Seth's brilliant plan for new content punt video's so everyone can settle down and rest easy.
Wouldn't Banefire be a straight upgrade to Comet storm if you're using it to kill the oppoenent? And wouldn't rule of law be straight up superior to eidolon of rhetoric since it's a rule of law with only downsides in this deck,?
M1G1 isn't there some reason to not scoop and slam with Battleball leaving up mana? Opponent might put you on Bolt/Path/etc. and not be able to commit to activating and slamming both tar pits.
(12:43) Myr Battlesphere deals 12 damage if it alone with the power of all the tokens it comes attacks full blast. Am I missing something but your opponent was on 12. Okay?! [Edit] The comments agree with me. I just remember that Myr Battlesphere has special powers to attack for a lot (maybe not 12 but it was a lot what I remembered) and apparently after checking it, indeed it was coincidently exactly 12.
Shouldn't Banefire be in place of Comet Storm? I know Comet Strom is an instant, but it seems to me that the uncounterability of Banefire along with the decreased mana cost makes it the optimal choice.
Uhh Match 1 Game 1 couldn't you attack with battlesphere using its effect to tap your tokens. pumping sphere to an 8/7 and dealing 4 additional damage to the opponent?
Hey, I could just be wrong, but isn't comet storm better than he played it¿ IE multikicking it targeting the same target, the same way you can with strive¿
Deck needs Mycosynth Lattice and Memnarch. You can get 1 blue for each permanent you have then use it steal all their permanents, locking them out entirely :)
What am I missing, it seems comet storm would be the thing of choice for finishers for infinite/tons of mana decks considering how little Mana you need to do a shitton to someone.
I play the red puzzle knots, red implements, Reckless Fireweaver, even renegade map has done quite well. People often give it back because they don't want to pay 3 life just to give me an extra land. Then I just end up thinning the deck and drawing spells. Deck is a lot of fun.
MTGGoldfish It might be more common than you realize, most notably Howling Mine & Trinisphere. There are some others too, maybe you could build a deck that uses that clause to your advantage : ) gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&output=spoiler&method=visual&format=+[%22Modern%22]&text=+[%22Is%20untapped%22]
Maybe instead of kitchen finks you could try dragons claw? I understand the interaction with genesis chamber but I think maybe against burn it might be better.
> Plays "the new Academy" in a format where Mycosynth Lattice is legal. > Does not play Mycosynth Lattice. Seth please! Also, Master Transmuter and Lightning Greaves. Clearly you have not played enough casual Tolarian Academy shenanigans. ;)
This is a quick brew of the direction I'd take Storm the Vault, very loosely based on my ever-changing casual Tolarian Academy pile with slightly different win conditions tappedout.net/mtg-decks/modern-academics/
If i got how the card works right: You should kick comet storm as much as you pay for it to maximize Damage. Its better to deal 5 damage 5 times than 10 damage once- For extra targets just hit your own creatures.
I, too, would argue that the uncounterable clause on Banefire trumps the instant aspect of Comet Storm. But I guess Seth thinks that the versatility of the latter is preferable.
Because Storm the Vault flips on end step, the Instant speed of Comet Storm appears to be very important. You really don't want to die to a lethal attack holding a lethal Blaze-effect because you had to wait a turn to use the gazillion mana you can produce.
looks like the Chamber would work really well with a creature heavy, sort of improvise deck to break the synergy since basically only you get Tokens from it, if you tap it always to cast your stuff in the right moment, so the OP never gets the trigger of it xD sounds janky
Seth, you should play more Multiplayer EDH. Myr Battlesphere is pretty much an all star in it, that way you can't forget what it does. Also yeah, what most people are saying is, take it a tad bit slower. We all love your content, but conceding vs an opponent with 12 life with a myr battlesphere hitting them for 12 is just painful to watch.
Am I the only one asking why this isn't just a normal affinity deck with StV built in? I mean turn 3 have the mana and the card draw and the artifacts to land and flip StV and pay for mana soft counters.
Because normal Affinity doesn't need a 4 CMC enchantment that gets to make extra mana after flipping at EoT - their hand is usually empty at that point, so what is the extra mana for ?
Nr4747 In my head I meant the shell of normal affinity. You can hold back counters, gigadrowse put your opponent, etc. and it's entirely possible to flip turn 1 with sketchy hands turn 2 no problem
15:37. Dammit you youngsters, we old artifacts can only work untapped. We had some restraints you darn hooligans. Now where are mah teeth? What're talking bout again?
Ah man, I wish that I submitted my extreme budget deck for standard! It's an artifact deck with that works reasonably well with nice utilities and big creatures for $15. Would you still be interested if I posted it Olive?
it was still really funny how you ended up tapping the genesis chamber when you needed it to give you tokens, but never tapped it when you would have benefited from denying tokens for the opponent, yet still ended up winning most of those lol
At 12:45 the very end of the first game Seth could have won. Swing with the Battlesphere and tap the four 4 Myr making it an 8/7 and dealing 4 damage to the opponent. They're at 8 and die to the sphere. Punt.
So...why wouldn't something like this work in Standard right now? Just servo schematic instead of genesis chamber(at least those you can tap for improvise), and maybe a Spell Swindle or two for funsies.
meatrace Clues really make the deck tick. Treasure Map isn't quite a replacement. The only X spells in Standard require Black. We'll probably eventually get a red X spell in the upcoming core set, but then Ballista and Thopterist will be close to rotating. You can certainly give it a go in Standard, but I think you'll find that the deck is reliant almost entirely on flipping Treasure Map.
To vote for next week's deck (or to leave an angry comment about scooping with a lethal Myr Battlesphere on board) head over to the article on the site! www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/against-the-odds-storm-the-vault-modern
MTGGoldfish i went straight to the comment section. He may have still had bolt but that was painful.
Requisite anger commitment! I like the deck a lot
Alter your 34 siege rhino deck into a 34 myr battle-sphere deck :p
Hello Seth, I would love to see you playing my homebrew Soulflayer Deck:
www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/934808#paper
That lethal battleball lol
That terrible feeling when Saffron Olive doesn't realize that Myr Battlesphere attacks for 12 so he doesn't attack for lethal and scoops instead in game one. AHHHHHHH!
AlmostSkillfull I realized that too and was like...dafuq are you doing Seth!!??
I usually lets Seth of the book but that was painful
I mean I get it. You're a content producer so you don't want to keep playing when you "know" you're about to lose but cmon man. Read the damn cards I think I speak for everyone here when I say we would MUCH rather see slightly slower play if it means you don't make south horrible terrible punts.
Doesn't it attack for 8? Because you'd need to tap the myr, so not attack with them? What have I missed?
Tapping the myr does 1 damage per myr AND gives battlesphere +1/+0 per myr. Dealing 4 damage and then making it an 8/7.
lmao he even mentions how useless Myr Battlesphere was in the wrap up, hilariously ironic. That was a god level punt. #PuntGod
I wouldn't neccessarily go as far as calling it a "punt" per se - but it was arguably a misplay (as in: Not the optimal line of play).
Nr4747 Conceding with lethal on board and the opponent tapped out is definitely a punt. At 12:45 he had lethal, and just conceded instead.
I can't believe Seth conceded when he was literally about to win.
when
Mitch no match 1 game 1. Attack with battlesphere, tap the myrs for the trigger. That's an 8/7 swinging and 4 direct damage. They were at 12 life too.
ah. Yeah I thought Myr Battlesphere did something with the Myr tokens that might've been lethal but figured it only pumped and I was mistaken because Seth didn't do it lol.
Give Seth every card possible and he'll make a great deck, tell him to play and he'll make it look awful xD
Kelvin Hu I definitely can
Yah, that one was arguably a misplay - not sure if I would go as far as to call it a "punt", but it didn't seem like the ideal line of play (if conceding can even be considered a line of play).
Game 1 match 1, you had game! Tap 4 Myrs, deal 4, swing for 8, for a total of 12!
I was thinking about that. Seth, wat
Okay, so I was not wrong.
Seth you punted so hard there
John Lancaster Seth's obsession with scooping before his life hits zero strikes again. I've never seen a player more eager to give up lol
this is why you read your cards when you put them in your deck
@mtggoldfish 12:45 Battlesphere would have killed them.
I nearly flipped my laptop when he scooped there. Holy punt.
I just throw my phone ....
I stopped watching at that point because it was so bad.
Linus Westcott it is a punt indeed, he should have at least tried
I love you Seth, but like, don't do that.. Every time you punt that bad a part of me dies.
Pause at 45:51 to learn the truth: Pia and Kiran Nalaar are actually Thoughtknot Seers!
daweisguy454 woot? XD
daweisguy454 I always knew it! Wait, does that mean eldrazi can feel love and procreate? Does that mean chandra as an eldrazi?
Lol
Do you know how battlesphere works, Seth.
Seth, where is Norin the wary??? He always goes with genesis chamber
Yeah it's how you break the symmetry, otherwise genesis chamber isn't even good
Thank you for the way you edit your games and not trying to cram too many games into 30 minutes like some other brew channels.
This deck was flippin' sweet! I wanna play this deck in Modern for sure! Thanks for the gameplay and deck tech.
That is a next level punt to tap things for improvise to deny value
If there's a way to punt, I'll find it, no matter how non-traditional it may be.
I admire your dedication Seth.
I swear at least once a month you make a deck I've been trying to build. Love it!
love how you combined the deck tech and games into one video!
Thank god we finally have another Modern Against the Odds. I am not a fan of the awful standard format so for these last couple weeks I have been suffering from Saffron Olive withdrawal. Hopefully we see more Modern content from here on out! Great video Seth, the deck was pretty sweet!
"Once Karn hits the stack, our finger hits the concede button."
LOL
so many videos this week, thanks Seth. Quality, as always!
Seeeth, that Myr Battlesphere was lethal in G1 !!!!! Tapping the 4 myr for 4 damage to face and +4/+0 on the Myr Battlesphere for exacties!
Wouldn't Banefire be better than Comet Storm? I mean sure, you could point it at creatures, but it could just as easily be countered.
I think it's more about the Instant vs. Sorcery aspect, since Storm the Vault flips on your own end step.
"Maybe the card that's not really good is Myr Battlesphere, maybe that's just 'cause we didn't draw it"
HA. SETH. HAHAHA.
when seth thought he was one short but he could sac the treasure for lethal @20:25
He had 15 because hangarback walker had to die for him to have 16 mana. Opponent bolting the Hangarback was, funnily enough, the one mana he needed to have 16 for X=14.

Bolting the Hangarback changed nothing really, but it did produce more mana. It was lethal no matter how you slice it from how I read into it. Maybe I'm missing something here.
I am hurt. You didnt even talk about myr battle sphere as a one hit kill......Keep up the great work.
Hey seth, you should get an animation to split between games. Something simple like the goldfish you used to put at the end of videos of your games would do perfectly.
I just feel I'm watching just one really long game without the splits (?
Good idea!
I love that you say the battle sphere wasn't good in the wrap up. That's because you need to turn it sideways to be good xD
Dammit Seth. You had the kill that first game. Battlesphere was hitting for 12.
with future videos, will you please include the start times for each match and what the opposing deck is? it's easier to commit to these long videos if i know that i can skip past the matches i have less interest in, and it's helpful as a viewer to know what we're up against before i go in. thank you! and thanks again for all the great content!

thanks again :)
Readind your cards before you play goes a long way.
I usually wait until after the videos go up and let all of you do it for me :)
Smart tactic :D
45:48 When your Pia & Kiran hits the board so hard it turns into a Thought-Knot Seer...
Finally Modern Storm! This is that deck that did bad in the Pro Tour right?
Bryan Tan, I wish, I wish. It seems a lot cooler than the actual Storm deck.
Match one game one, I can already tell this episode is going to make me go bald.
Been waiting for this one Seth.
41:40 "Go down one Comet Storm for a Negate"
**puts comet storm in sideboard. brings comet storm back**
Sounds like something I would do.
Anyone else notice that while on the stack, pia and Kiran Nalaar are actually a thought -knot seer? 45:49
I'm pretty sure all these punts from all of Seth's video's are leading to a new punt best of series that will bring us joy instead of pain, its all going according to Seth's brilliant plan for new content punt video's so everyone can settle down and rest easy.
43:20 misplay. correct line is to go out on your own terms with shockland and ballista
45:45 the Pia and Kiran Nalaar become a Thought-Knot Seer on the stack.
Wouldn't Banefire be a straight upgrade to Comet storm if you're using it to kill the oppoenent?
And wouldn't rule of law be straight up superior to eidolon of rhetoric since it's a rule of law with only downsides in this deck,?
sometimes i think eidolon triggers the chamber
Holy jeebus, that was a fast way of explaining it @5:45
M1G1 isn't there some reason to not scoop and slam with Battleball leaving up mana? Opponent might put you on Bolt/Path/etc. and not be able to commit to activating and slamming both tar pits.
I haven't watched the games yet, but this deck looks so sweet. I hope it does well
With all those genesis chambers, why no dryad arbors to tick up artifact count?
(12:43) Myr Battlesphere deals 12 damage if it alone with the power of all the tokens it comes attacks full blast. Am I missing something but your opponent was on 12.
Okay?!
[Edit] The comments agree with me.
I just remember that Myr Battlesphere has special powers to attack for a lot (maybe not 12 but it was a lot what I remembered) and apparently after checking it, indeed it was coincidently exactly 12.
Yeah, that maybe could have gone differently.
Really enjoyd this gameplay except that one mistake game 1 this deck looks really fun. Thx
45:52 Why is there a Thought-Knot Seer?
Against Burn, you a accidentally boarded out, then back in, Comet Storm, then drew it. If it had been a Negate, as intended, you had another turn.
was that the second comet storm he drew tho? if not it's only 50% an extra turn
I have no idea why you didnt side in crumble to dust from sideboard in the 1st game. seems so obvious to remove the tarpits as its a finisher for them
What about Norin the Wary for Genesis Chamber?
Hey, I could just be wrong, but isn't comet storm better than he played it¿ IE multikicking it targeting the same target, the same way you can with strive¿
You can only target the same player once, unfortunately :(
Oh, I guess I just didn't understand how that interaction worked, thank you so much for letting me know :)
SETH!!! Attack with your damn battlesphere at 12:40 aaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
45:50 Pia and Kiran Nalaar and Thought-Knot Seer are the same card? Lol.
That improvise punt at 15:45 made me cringe.
Why do you play the land before Tireless Tracker ??? D:
Deck needs Mycosynth Lattice and Memnarch. You can get 1 blue for each permanent you have then use it steal all their permanents, locking them out entirely :)
I guess you could say he... (puts on sunglasses) comet stormed the vault.
Please leave
You take those fucking glasses off
-Why did you make these terrible puns?
-Because I Catlacan...
Jakub Schiffel stop itla-mocking people
Out of curiosity, why did you choose comet storm over banefire?
Comet Storm is an instant, so we can use it with Vault of Catlacan right away (since Storm the Vault flips on our end step).
It seems the uncounterable ability of banefire would of saved you a few of those games. I guess it's just variance.
What am I missing, it seems comet storm would be the thing of choice for finishers for infinite/tons of mana decks considering how little Mana you need to do a shitton to someone.
Seth, why no Eidelon against B/R Hollow One?
Just wondering why you are 4 colors? Is tireless tracker worth it?
Maybe, it's fun.
Battlesphere is a bomb ya know. When you attack :D
I think you should have brought Ghirapur Aether Grid in against Grixis Control (match 1) -- they seem good against his tar pits :)
Can you play Pia's Revolution in Standard please? I have a deck running it and I want to see what you do with it! D
Daver doodles watcha runnin' in it?
Daver doodles I play it with a bunch of etb artifacts, then include pias revolution, panharmonicon and some artifact sac outlets
I play the red puzzle knots, red implements, Reckless Fireweaver, even renegade map has done quite well. People often give it back because they don't want to pay 3 life just to give me an extra land. Then I just end up thinning the deck and drawing spells. Deck is a lot of fun.
The izzet staticaster might be good in the main deck to replace the battlesphere. The 'caster can feast on the opponent's myr tokens!
This is an interesting idea.
41:38 Side out the comet storm just to bring it back in instead of negate lmao
Game 1 scoop with lethal on board... we're off to a great start.
Game 2 miss Myrs by tapping Genesis Chambers. Please Seth, you're killing me.
Game one looks like a punt :(
Game two was probably a also a punt, but "if it's untapped" is a really weird phrase to have on a Modern-legal card.
MTGGoldfish
It might be more common than you realize, most notably Howling Mine & Trinisphere. There are some others too, maybe you could build a deck that uses that clause to your advantage : )
gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&output=spoiler&method=visual&format=+[%22Modern%22]&text=+[%22Is%20untapped%22]
Maybe instead of kitchen finks you could try dragons claw? I understand the interaction with genesis chamber but I think maybe against burn it might be better.
I think Banefire would be a better choice over comet storm. Also, that missed attack game one hurt to watch.
The problem is Banefire is it's a sorcery, so we have to wait a turn to use it after we flip Storm the Vault
MTGGoldfish I see. Banefire just always pops into my mind when I see people play against counterspells. You're right
9:19
JustAnotherPest thank you!
JustAnotherPest what's this stamp for?
+Louise, some people still haven't realized that there are timestamps in the description.
Felipe Rodrigues to be fair I didn't know and it is right at the bottom
Yeah I told Seth that putting them at the top was better, he said the plan is to make a pinned comment but he doesn't know how to do it on his phone.
Why do you do this to us Seth, you had the dang kill game one match one 😣
29:23 Seth loves to slap em!
Why not banefire instead of comet storm?
!punt he had exact damage in game one of match one... but chose to scoop
I always wondered why not whirler rogue
> Plays "the new Academy" in a format where Mycosynth Lattice is legal.
> Does not play Mycosynth Lattice.
Seth please!
Also, Master Transmuter and Lightning Greaves. Clearly you have not played enough casual Tolarian Academy shenanigans. ;)
This is a quick brew of the direction I'd take Storm the Vault, very loosely based on my ever-changing casual Tolarian Academy pile with slightly different win conditions tappedout.net/mtg-decks/modern-academics/
Meh.
Looks like a fun idea!
seems like a lot of cards that do nothing
I am surprised there is no Ghirapur Æther Grid in the deck. seems a natural fit to give you removal and grind in the all artifact generation deck.
Jimmy Lay Aether Grid is interesting with Genesis Chamber because you can prevent the opponent from getting token
Hanmacx that was my thinking. Its a syngergy breaker and gives a use to treasures and clues
Jimmy Lay it’s in the sideboard
Jimmy Lay don't you mean symmetry breaker? XD
Hanmacx no. I know wut i meen.
Why Eidolon of Rhetoric over Ethersworn Canonist?
I didn't know that the big golem guy on Storm the Vault had a tiny face until I saw this video.
how seth put his deck in the right?
If i got how the card works right: You should kick comet storm as much as you pay for it to maximize Damage. Its better to deal 5 damage 5 times than 10 damage once- For extra targets just hit your own creatures.
I was watching this deck tech and... no Norin? seems like if you're running genesis chamber, running Norin is the highway to valuetown.
Why not play banefire??? It so good against control
He explained this in the deck tech....
Is Banefire instant?
I, too, would argue that the uncounterable clause on Banefire trumps the instant aspect of Comet Storm. But I guess Seth thinks that the versatility of the latter is preferable.
BrewBrewBrewTheDeck let them do the end step scry in and whatever, then comet storm
Because Storm the Vault flips on end step, the Instant speed of Comet Storm appears to be very important. You really don't want to die to a lethal attack holding a lethal Blaze-effect because you had to wait a turn to use the gazillion mana you can produce.
You literally had the win m1 g1 unless they had bolt or something
Whhyyyy!!!
A million people have probably already pointed this out but why did you scoop game 1?!
looks like the Chamber would work really well with a creature heavy, sort of improvise deck to break the synergy since basically only you get Tokens from it, if you tap it always to cast your stuff in the right moment, so the OP never gets the trigger of it xD sounds janky
Game 1 massive scrub concession.
45:50 It says that Pia and Kiran Nalaar are a red thought-knot seer. lol
So the reason to not play Banefire instead of Comet Storm is just the name flavor?
I like it!
unblessed instant speed since Storm flips on his endstep.
Am I the only one asking why this isn't just a normal affinity deck with StV built in? I mean turn 3 have the mana and the card draw and the artifacts to land and flip StV and pay for mana soft counters.

Ah man, I wish that I submitted my extreme budget deck for standard! It's an artifact deck with that works reasonably well with nice utilities and big creatures for $15. Would you still be interested if I posted it Olive?
Just send it to "saffronolive" followed by an 'at' and then "mtggoldfish.com" ;>
Sure. I'd love to see it.
how did you build this entire deck without ever reading the full text of the core card lol
it was still really funny how you ended up tapping the genesis chamber when you needed it to give you tokens, but never tapped it when you would have benefited from denying tokens for the opponent, yet still ended up winning most of those lol
At 12:45 the very end of the first game Seth could have won. Swing with the Battlesphere and tap the four 4 Myr making it an 8/7 and dealing 4 damage to the opponent. They're at 8 and die to the sphere. Punt.
Why does this deck not just run snow lands and astrolabe? Seems like an easy auto include and a can trip artifact mana fixer for this 4 color deck.
Comet storm winning games in modern. I never thought this day would come...
Why not banefire?
45:49 thought knot pia trigger? Lol
So...why wouldn't something like this work in Standard right now? Just servo schematic instead of genesis chamber(at least those you can tap for improvise), and maybe a Spell Swindle or two for funsies.

Rishkar should be in this deck...ik it doesn't make artifacts but it ramps really good for this
