Dr. Goertz I love your videos! Could you do a video talking on respect, handling disrespect from others effectively etc.

I have personal experience with a family member who had this disorder. Female, seemingly obtained a nursing degree later in life (late 40s) specifically to obtain medical treatment. At one point, was seeing over 10 specialists, all for subjective disorders of various types.
I know a eastern European psychiatrist who believes uniquely American disorders like fibromyalgia are factitious. I wonder if this is another sign of our broken society and a maladaptive expression of psychological pain.
Your videos are excellent Dr. Goetz. Thank you for your continued efforts.

I really like hearing you take a bit of a deep dive into a different disorder than I see often discussed. I would love to see more of these!
Do you have any thoughts on capgras syndrome?

My father has extreme mental health issues. I am thinking sometimes it is factitious disorder. However he shows somatic symptom disorder, and histrionic personality disorder as well. Some mental health professionals have struggled understanding what he has. He also drank for over 50 years until alcohol caused heart failure for him. He no longer lived that life and went to obsessive health concerns even when everything comes back good. We've been to countless hospitals in the 4.5 years. He has had pseudoseizures, tried different medicines, but refuses to do proper work in therapy. Nobody wants to help him in a psychological standpoint. He has been denied inpatient in a mental health setting when it's been suggested by other providers. It's very frustrating and we are all at a loss at this point. He can turn on and off his psychosis and fools providers. It's an awful cycle and I've become emotionally bankrupt at this point. We have tried everything and psychiatric facilities have denied him. They will not listen to me and it's extremely dejecting.

Thank you Hilly for sharing this. In general, in a situation like the one you describe, it might be helpful for the person to have a consistent psychiatrist and/or psychotherapist, and to have regular visits. Peter Goertz

I could listen to you for hours, and you are very attractive too! I've been called a "natural psychologist" trained as a Montessori Teacher before l had my children.I could never have a high powered job like yours as l am overly empathic, and feel too deep...so l use my "gifts" in prayer...offering the suffering of others to Our Heavely Father to pour his Grace on these poor people!

Do you think this could be related to fibromyalgia? I relate to this, and but only connection I see between the two would be factious disorder.

I have not heard of a connection between fibromyalgia and factitious disorders. Peter Goertz

@@goertzpsychiatry9340 Cheers. I appreciate your response.
I’m a sufferer of fibromyalgia, and the pain leads me to every end to try find the reasoning or the cause- to then find a cure… or anything that will help the pain. I’m considering its aetiology could be psychological or trauma related. One time I had a realisation it could be almost a hallucination of pain, similar to how others experience visual hallucinations or auditory hallucinations. This is just another sense, touch / pain.

Don't you think this is a cry for help? They need attention?

It does seem to be a cry for help in the form of seeking medical attention.
