I work at the suicide hotlines and peer support groups. It's terrifying sometimes thinking that one wrong word could be the end of it for them. But then other times it is just routine and I even find myself becoming bored and impatient. I know I've lost people but the weight of being a doctor.... when everyone who comes in is at risk suicidal should be admitted and given proper care but there is just not the resources, how you pick, how you choose, it's just trying to do the best of a shit situation. I'm pre med and hopefully end up in psychiatry and sure that I will lose many more along the way.
I have worked in the field and been a patient. I’m no longer working, but I always look at things from both sides. It helps me understand when I have been treated crappy, and I hope it helped me provide better care. When I’m at my best, I can turn it all into advocacy. Or at the very least articulate my needs better to my own providers. Your statement is helping me think through my frustration at getting turned away again and again vs the struggle my providers experience in needing to ration care. I’m living in a province in Canada where the rationing of mental health care is incredibly obvious, and even if I feel like it’s unconscionable, I have to either work within the system here or deal with everything on my own. Maybe a bit of both.
Thank you for such a kind, thoughtful and vulnerable video. As you said many people don't talk about this aspect of psychiatry, or mental health in general. This video is so valuable because many mental health workers will experience these outcomes, and they are not taught this in most training programs. In training, health care providers are taught to preserve life, and when adverse outcomes happen they are often blindsided and ill equipped. This video will stay archived in my brain because of its humanity and its healing potential. Thanks!
@@goertzpsychiatry9340as someone who has been a mental healthcare provider and a patient, I believe this to the core of my being. Except when I’m too ill to think rationally. In my opinion, providers who loose hope need to seek supervision and psychotherapy.
Do you agree with Albert Camu’s statement that suicide is the only truly serious philosophical problem? I think it is such a bold thing to say, and it makes me think.

Many medical professionals online are telling the public that a carnivore diet is the only suitable diet for our species. Many of them claim that depression is caused by an incorrect diet and they advise that eating animal products only will dramatically lift depression within a matter of four to six weeks. Professor Jordon Peterson who is a Canadian professor of psychology strongly endorses this truth.

Thank you for your kind words!
Aren't some patients beyond being helped, their suffering is so great?
In my opinion there is always hope. Peter Goertz

Hi Jeremy, I don’t have an answer at this point, but it is an interesting question. Peter Goertz
I think suicide is scary and fascinating at the same time. Is committing suicide an act of bravery?
