Yeah my brother is now in bootcamp for the navy and they aren’t aloud to say i love you or anything like that so it is really sad also they have to call you by there name and when my be other called my mom it was like he was reading from a script. He wasnt able to say mom instead he had to say Melissa
I want to thank all of those RDCs and instructors I met there, not only for their instruction, but also for reassuring me that I knew I was heading in the right direction in my choice of career path. Good times. Thank you and Bravo Zulu to all those who were and are there building the sailors of tomorrow! Future Seabee right here, hopefully by 2011.
I was in recruit company #136 for 12 weeks starting in March 1967. This provided me the fundamentals for the next four years, which in turn provided me the fundamentals for the rest of my (successful!) professional life. Now retired, I can look back with gratitude for all those at the Great Lakes Recruit Command for the great work at help they provided me. And particular thanks to the Company Commander, Petty Officer 1st Class C E Layne (MR1), who led all of us ‘kids’ through boot camp!!!
She makes it sound like a country club vacation getaway. It may be compared to Marines boot camp, but it's still boot camp.We weren't even off the bus yet and they were already yelling at us.And yes someone said it was only a few second phone call to say we made it.I remember that like it was yesterday.
Don't forget getting sick because I guy got a cold. One person in the barracks gets sick, everyone in the barracks gets sick. And one person always gets sick.
I went in 1988. December in the great mistakes. I loved boot camp. I needed the structure at 18 years old. We were color company lol..big chicken little chicken and nearly all the flags.
Went through boot in Orlando in 1979. That was a beautiful campus. Went to Great Lakes for Electronics Technician "A" school. Great Lakes was REALLY old and frumpy. Building 1 was interesting, but in really bad shape. Only the "400" barracks were modern. I was stuck in the "500" barracks - not horrible, but not great. RTC Great Lakes has clearly gotten a LOT of attention. Inside marching? Inside Blue Jacket? Holy cow, pretty cool. The Navy clearly upped its game since '79.
DCs (damage controllmen) are the primary shipboard firefighters and shipboard disaster specialists. FN in Navy lingo means "fireman" which, in the Navy, simply means an E-3 in an engineering specialty rating.
Ha! That (HMC Maier) was my RDC back in '09. I think it was tough for her to yell at people sometimes without breaking a smile/laughing a little if I remember correctly.
I was there in 1989 and what a difference 21 years makes! The barracks, galley, and training centers look totally different. Where we did our physical training wasn't even close to 182,000 sq.ft. and it looks like there are machines where you can lift weights and do various other strength training. The government did an awesome job in the major changes to RTC!
I froze my butt of at Great Lakes in the winter of 1989. Did not have to "double time" everywhere because everything was frozen. As far as anyone who wants to slam my beloved Navy hear this. It was the most exciting 6 years of my life so far. The training I received was the best the military had to offer and when I left the Navy, the job offers came flying in left and right. I now have a great job and earn a great salary thanks to being a Navy Vet. I would do it all over again!
I felt like I was watching an episode of "Cribs" on MTV.... Of course they make boot camp look easy and happy going. It's how they attract recruits. Marines, on the other hand, let you know how bad recruit training is gonna suck from minute one.
You're right it is. I skipped school and hid for a week just to get my message across that I didn't wanna be there anymore. So they sent me to the fleet and I had the time of my life.
"Red ropes" are RDCs - Recruit Division Commanders (drill instructors). They wear a red "rope" to indicate their position, so recruits can tell which petty officers and chiefs are RDCs. This is a very cleaned-up, slick look at boot camp that very carefully doesn't show the less fun parts of boot camp. It makes it look a LOT easier than it is. I'm so glad they are no longer living in the barracks that were old when my husband went through in the early 1980s.
thank god i plan to go to the navy when im of age and seeing this is a relief to me so i can know what to expect when i go. My main inspiration of going is my family and my uncle served in the us marine corps so that just motivates me and inspires me. my mom is scared but she'll come to terms with it i hope so.
@Scioneer Yeah I agree with you on that. Things have changed so much over the years, they got it made nowadays going to boot camp compared to the way it was back in the day. From one veteran to another, thanks for your service!
***** The only time I had green eggs is when my ship crossed the equator in the Shell Back initiation in 1991. The cooks used green food coloring in the making scrambled eggs. It was great to see my Division Officer next to me on his hands and knees, just like myself.

There are no lockers because you keep everything in your rack if you watched the video or missed the part where the Chief showed how recruits keep their belongings inside of their racks. These racks are designed like the ones on the ships to save space.
Also, I've been in the Navy for three years. I've been on sea duty for most of those. Trust me, that destroyer in bootcamp is nothing like a real ship. I wish my boat looked like that.
Nice sunny day. Green grass all around. How about some scenes of the recruit center in mid-February? Training looks much improved since I was there 45 years ago. The Navy is what you make of it.
I remember when we got our racks like that installed on my ship, I was in hog heaven with all that space. Before that all I had is one tiny locker for all of my clothes and belongings.
I went to basic down in Orlando Florida back in 1974. My son went through Great Lakes in 2006. Another 17 years and my grandson should be shipping out. LOL

I went to Great Lakes in just 2004, and I didn't get to stay in one of the new, updated ships. Our barracks had no hot water, no heater, It was January, I froze my butt off, and had a horrible time. I would do it again in a heart beat.
Workout equipment, when I went to RDC in '95, we weren't allowed in that room (it was in barracks, not the gym). Pool? 1 day to make sure we could swim, never saw it again. Gun training was same way, we shot on one day. Basically, everything shown here is a one day deal (different days of course).
If you were to ask my dad about USAF boot camp if it was Hell on Earth, he'd agree with you. At least it was during the late 70s and 80s. Especially all the times he gave 341s and smoked shortly thereafter
WOW!!!! those "ships"/barracks are nice I remember 12 years ago the nasty buildings She said that was small space hell that was alot bigger space than when I was there

Yes, everyone does. It's so everyone aboard the ship at least knows the basic. In case the FNs get killed or not present at the time. Its essential to uphold the ship.
Yes I'm a CS3. i CHOSE Culinary Specialist because i wanted to get in on some of the cool stuff that SOME CS's get to do. i want to be a chef someday so thats why i chose CS. my recruiter wanted me to go Nuke as an MM but i chose CS. now i wish i had chosen FC or GM or even QM
God I remember getting dropped every hour because my RDC didn't like the fact that I was in better shape than he was. I miss doing the battle stations course. Crawling through the gravel during mass casualties training and the Marline Spike were awesome. I definitely do not miss the cold winter weather nor the gas chamber. And 5) Chief wore her cover inside
I was in the USS Enterprise for USNSCC boot. Great DoD funded program to familiarize teens with the military. We got the same treatment from RDCs actual recruits down the p-ways were getting. To tell the truth, when I got home I missed being there, until I went to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Field Training a week later ;)

Yea, i think I was one of the last divisions to do the old battlestations. having to run from firefighting all the way down to marlinspike and then all the way back to the pool
I wonder how awkward it was for the recruits to have this very friendly and ecstatic Chief RDC walk through their racks.
Something tells me she wouldn't be friendly or ecstatic actually pushing recruits. This video is probably more suited to parents of would-be sailors.
Chief: “Now it’s time for me to get back to work.”
Recruits: *sweat nervously*
Hahah
lol 2-3 minute phone call home?
Try "I'm here, I love you, you'll be getting a box in a few days. good bye."
a total about 19 seconds is more like it.

exactly what i thought haha
i know... the host is soooooo annoying and needs to get smacked
notice at the beginning it says "NAVYformoms" this is for your parents, to make them feel better. this is sugarcoated
Julian Luna it's pretty spot on far as training except for all the classroom hours and the p days they didn't bother with the miserable boring stuff
My grandma dad was on the USS Arizona he is one of them that survived
