Function First Dive Watch: 2-Months with the Marathon GSAR

- The Marathon Government Search and Rescue dive watch defines the functional tool watch category for me. Developed specifically to satisfy government contracts for military bodies like the US Marine Corps, there is a lot to like in the GSAR if you want a rugged, no nonsense, timepiece.

One of the smoothest, efficient, educational, most eloquent watch reviews I've seen; consider making another watch dedicated channel!
Thanks!
I finally decided to buy the gsar today in 41mm. Can’t wait to receive it!
Nice! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have 👍
How did you find it? I’m looking at one now- got a Canadian holiday coming up so figured I “need” a watch with a maple leaf on it otherwise I can’t go 😂
BEST tool watch on earth. I bought the rubber strap version and upgrade the band with Strapcode brushed SS. A better band for 1/2 the price.
Marathon is amazing, hope to pick up one ine day
Great review! Own a Arctic 41mm GSAR (with Sellita SW200) and a Quartz Composite Navigator and love both. Military spec tool watches from a company with history and great customer service. Thanks, PMc
Great review!
I was looking for a durable daily watch which wasn’t just a cheap ‘beater’. As I explored various Japanese and Swiss powered diver watches, I came across the Marathon MSAR, the version of this watch for smaller wrists. What a surprise to discover it’s Canadian heritage as well (I’m Canadian).
Thank you for doing a very nice review. Looking forward to seeing more of your content.
Thanks Keith, that was my motivation behind purchasing one as well - and the Canadian heritage is a nice treat too 👍
I’m booking my first holiday to Canada so am looking for a Canadian holiday watch (any excuse for us watch geeks 😄). I’m stuck between a Halios Universa which I like but is hard to get, a Marathon or a cheap Momentum….
The marathon here is the most expensive but had the maple leaf… decisions decisions😄
Got the white GSAR and that is my favorite out of my collection. This one is next on my list
Nice! I have a friend who picked that up, and he loves it 👍
Great review! Love my GSAR
Thanks Matthew 👍 I'm glad you liked it and that you're happy with your GSAR - I'm super happy with mine as well ✌️
Lovely watch, especially with the gray maple and the depth. Nice review
Thanks Ricky 👍 I'm glad you liked the review. Thanks for taking the time to let me know ✌️
Www Y
Superb review of this watch, such detail, very very interesting, thanks.
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it 👍
Love this watch I have the US Government Anthracite version. Great video by the way.
Nice choice 👍 thanks!
Excellent review!
Thanks!
I purchased the JDD and it is superb
Supporting a Canadian business was one of the reasons why I recently ordered an MSAR.
Nice 👍 how is it? I was torn between this and the MSAR, but ultimately decided I wanted the maple leaf on the dial and that was only available in the GSAR at the time 🍁
@@JakeReevesVideo mine hasn't arrived yet, I'll keep you updated. Currently, my smallest watch is a Hamilton Khaki at 40mm and I'm curious as to how the 36mm wears.
Please do, I'm very interested in the sizing too... that was one of the things I liked, but was a bit nervous about, with the MSAR 👍
So, I've only had it for a day, so take it for what it's worth, but I'm actually surprised how quickly I've acclimated to its size; my 40mm Hamilton looked huge this morning.
The one thing I'll say, is that the thickness seems disproportionate to the width and I imagine the proportions balance better on the GSAR. But happy with it so far. I have approximately 7 inch wrists, for reference.

Nice 👍 ya, I think you're right about the height to width aspect being more balanced on the GSAR and JSAR. Just a function of the limitations on making it slimmer, but it looks good 👍
Very helpful video, thank you
You’re very welcome Tommy 👍
Love the watch, and as a watch collector I think is one of the best diver designs above all. But as you said about the luminescent I was a little deceptioned too, cause I have watches 40 years old and even being kept for years in a drawer they still glow and took my GSAR after a couple of years without use and now it doesn't glow anymore. But still one of the best divers design without the necessity of a weird or very huge desing as many of new micro brands.
The half-life of tritium is 12 years. They're often used in iron sights on handguns, and even those will start to dim after about 3-5 years. The tritium they use most likely doesn't come directly from the manufacturing process directly into the watch, that tritium could already be a few years old before it's put into the watch. Who knows. Anyway, I'm sure you can get it serviced if you inquire.
There is no deception if you understand what you're buying in the first place lol. As soon as I read tritium I knew it wouldn't glow after X amount of time has passed. Guess what...I'm still about to buy it lol.
Edit: maybe there is some deception LOL. Description says "TRITIUM GAS TUBES: Self illuminated 24/7 tritium gas tubes for up to 25 years." Yeah that's bullshit lol. It's 2x the half-life of tritium rofl.
super watch
Great review Jake . I’ve been doing a lot of research into this watch and found your comments the most helpful. Thanks ! Favor, can you clarify for me , is the movement on your watch mechanical or automatic? I was on the website and none of GSAR look to be “mechanical “… perhaps I misunderstand movement.🥴. Thanks again Jake .
Hi Rob, I’m happy to hear you liked the video - Thanks! Automatic is a type of mechanical movement that will “automatically” wind the movement based on your hand moving throughout the day. The alternative would be a quartz movement, which is powered by a battery. I hope this helps 👍
@@JakeReevesVideo thanks, Jake! 10-4, got it.... makes sense.
Just sent my 41 mm in for service. Asked to replace the anthracite dial with the arctic. Cost a penny but I love the watch
Just got a GSAR for $850 on rubber, so I got a strapcode bracelet because they wanted over $400 for the marathon bracelet
The rubber is scented - always a good choice 👍
Im just curious, i just purchased this watch and was wondering how much trouble it is to replace the band and is there a lug tool you would reccomend? Thanks.
First off, congrats! I really like the watch and hope you're happy with it as well. I have a few really basic lug tools that came with some buckles I bought for making my own straps, but I also bought the $15 Archer lug tool on Amazon - I broke the first one and they were nice enough to send a replacement, but I find it difficult to recommend that one since I did break it. If you can find one for like $30 then the quality is probably going to be better. I think there is one that Teddy Baldassarre usually recommends (look up his channel on UA-cam).
I loved my Anthracite for a while.....................then 10 minutes a week slow after 6 months, then one year later, crown broke. $100 to ship back to Marathon, $350 to service. :( I will stick to my Seiko divers! Cant beat the SPB143 dive for the same money.
I love to death spb143 but that R6 movement pain for me must be lucky to get decent running one🤦
Hi Jake great review! I'd love to buy one but do you recommend automatic or quartz variant?
I chose the automatic because I'm a sucker for a mechanical watch... I love knowing that the watch is keeping time through gears and springs. However, the quarts will be less daily upkeep because you'll never have to make sure the spring is wound. Really depends on your lifestyle and preference. Good luck with the decision 👍
@@JakeReevesVideo thank you 🙌🏻
You're welcome 👍 Thanks for watching ✌
The quartz movement is worth about $30. So you’d be grossly over paying for it. Get the automatic.
T25, T100, and T-Swiss Made-T refer to the total radioactivity in the timepiece; it is a label that satisfies regulatory requirements from the NRC and has no relation to brightness of individual GTLS tubes. There is no such thing as a T25 tube or a T100 tube.
Hi Jake could you please let me know whether I should go with black dial or white dial? My concern is about the visibility on both winter and sunny day! Which one would fit the best?
Tough call. I’ve never had issues with my black dial in terms of visibility, but I believe the white one was specifically designed to improve visibility is white snowy outings. I have a friend with a white dial and he likes it, but I would just suggest that you pick whichever you prefer the look of - because I haven’t had issues with my black dial 👍
@@JakeReevesVideo wow that sounds cool personally I prefer black though, thanks jake
You’re very welcome 👍 Whatever you end up getting, make sure it’s what you like ✌️ Good luck
Have you ever tried wearing the Marathon rubber strap on your speedy?
Ya, it's great 👍 can't beat that vanilla scent
Sorry, just seen the case size at end of vid 👍🏻
Do you know if there are compatible jubilee bracelet?
Not marathon branded, but it is a 20mm lug width, so you can probably find one.
Hello there, can I just ask if this is the 36mm or the 41mm version? Thanks very much.
41mm 👍
Thanks very much.
@@pompeylad1977 you’re very welcome ✌️
Great review ! I'm looking at buying this watch as a everyday piece , how's it holding up ?
Hey James, awesome news. A colleague of mine just bought one as well. Mine has held up well. I did have one issue with the movement after making the video, but I sent it back to Marathon and they fixed it right up, called me when they knew what was going on and it has been working great since. I still recommend 👍
@@JakeReevesVideo ok great , we have a marathon here in the UK , just torn between the 36 and 41 I have a just under 7 inch wrist so hoping the 41 would be ok .
Oh, the 41 will be fine. I have a slightly smaller wrist and it fits me well. I was torn between the 2 as well, but could only get the maple version in the 41, so I went for it. And when it arrived, I was surprised at how 'small' it was after seeing so many reviewers talking about the size of it, but they are really talking about thickness, not circumference. I think you would be fine with either, but the 41 would look more 'standard'. Good luck with your decision!
@@JakeReevesVideo great , thanks for taking the time to reply.
No worries, I'm glad to help. Knowledge is power!
More watch review
Thanks for letting me know you want more 🙂 It's something I hope to do more of in the future... so stay tuned
Sir, I need one watch
What style do you like?
Only one? 😂
Agreed... You should definitely get a watch ⌚
Yeah, thanks for dumping the ETA 2824-2, for the SW200 Marathon. Reason why I never brought this watch!
First of all, The movement in this watch is a Selitta SW200 not an ETA2824.
Secondly, you can set the date whenever you want on this watch because the calendar mechanism allows to do so.
The calendar rotation wheel has a spring finger which is a security for setting the date between 00:00 and 01:00.
Perhaps you have a newer (or older) version. But mine is definitely an ETA 2824.2. I've spoken with then engineers at Marathon about it. I believe in 2021 they switched to an in-house movement (the M2).
@@JakeReevesVideo
mine is "us government " with eta 2824 and i'ts from feb. 2006 graved , iso 6425 , 316l steel
So far I'm not impressed with mine. The clasp exploded on my first day and within under a week I dropped it on the case back and all the indices fell off. Now I have to send it to be serviced by Marathon. I'm going to update this when this is all over. So far I'm extremely unhappy with the product and I dont understand how its achieved such a rugged perception if I cant even drop it. I bet I can drop my trench watch from 1905 and itll survive but this thing is so heavy and apparently not constructed as well as you watch guys think.
Keep us updated!
Ouch thanks for telling us about this Dissapointing!!
How did it go?
All good now?
Mine is amazing. You probably had a faulty piece. Their customer service is fantastic, they will take care of you.
41 is still too small on you.
overpriced for what you get!
