Marita Koch Sets 400M World Record + Rare Interview - 1985 Canberra

- At her prime, showing the power of the East German steroid system. Coming into this meet she was the current 200 & 400 WR holder, and during this meet in October 1985 she lowered her 400 WR to the still-standing (and unbeatable?) 47.60. She also ran on the 4x400 which won in 3:19.49, 4 seconds slower than their national record 3:15.92 set the year before in Erfurt. After the race Koch is interviewed live by Donna DeVarona, extremely rare since East Germans were forbidden to talk to media
When you break a world record set by Kratochvílová you know you are doing something special because that guy was fast!

And actual men still run 400 meters 4,5 secs faster per average
Easily the fastest bodybuilder of all time.

I was there that day. There were quite a few world records broken at that meet. The athletes were practically sweating steroids. The 80s were the peak of the PEDs abuse and some of the records have easily survived from those days to virtually prove how dirty those athletes were.
Underrated comment.
And same with the 800 m world record holder for women. Those two women have a very masculine looking appearance, And we’re clearly way ahead of the rest of the women, so obviously they had to have been on some thing
@@drewblazecertifiedpersonal9788So by that thinking Sydney McClaughlin is on some serious dope. She's an old looking 21 year old.
Juice ages you. You will see male bodybuilders who are in their 20s but look 15 to 20 years older. And actually look YOUNGER years later when they are no longer competing.
I cannot believe Sydney McClaughlin is only 21. I thought she was late 30s early 40s when I first saw her.

@@fender1000100 Yup, very very good chance she's on the gear!
@@drewblazecertifiedpersonal9788 When Marita smoked that world record the East German Doping Programme was at the zenith of success. There is a good idea of how much Marita was taking on her State Monitored dosage which was recovered by researchers. It appears she was doped with Oral-Turinabol (4-Chlorodehydromethyltestosterone) from 1981 to 1984 with dosages ranging from 530 to 1460 mg/year. The East German Athletes were told to take their "vitamins" as the State didn't want the athletes to know they were experimenting with their health. The Brilliance of the chemistry breakthrough was that typical androgenic effects (intense masculation were lessened somewhat). In Marita's sensational 400m her strength is fantastic and her recovery shows the power of the chemistry: she jogs. Sydney, for example, after her world record in the 400m hurdles was breathing very fast and could not get up for about five minutes. The East German drug was used by athletes from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus in 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
Steroid give speed endurance and she ran the first 3 100m splits in the low 11s. She ran the 100 two years before in 11.02. That is close to max effort for a 400. She starts stutter stepping at the end cuz she sprinting the first 350 but instead of being tired after she finished, she was able to easily keep jogging for a victory lap. There is documentation of Koch taking drugs in the 80s. Some athletes were giving drugs and told they were just supplements or vitamins

For everyone who doesn’t know Marita Koch and every East German national team member who competed in the Olympics or international competition was doped heavily. The GDR’s athletic program was run by the government with scientists who doped promising minors relentlessly to gain prestige for the then Soviet puppet state of East Germany. The women athletes of the GDR were under huge amounts of testosterone derivatives and many suffered life long health effects due to what was being given to them. Maritas time speaks for itself in how out of this world it is that nobody has broken it in 40 years… it wasn’t clean.

Everybody should really just cry some more. In the words of Nate Diaz "everybody is on steroids." We just know how to mask it better now so that it slips through drug tests. If you think today's athletes aren't also on steroids, you're being willfully naïve. What Marita Koch achieved is unparalleled because she is the greatest natural talent we've ever seen running the women's 400. To do what she did almost 40 years ago in an age where today's athletes have much better science, nutrition, drugs etc. is remarkable. Today's athletes are on far superior steroids with better technology and they can't touch her. It's remarkable. Crybabies gonna cry and make every excuse. But Marita is the Michael Jordan of her event, deal with it.
100% true. Oral T is 50 years old therefore it's stupidity to think that 'something better' hasn't been available since then. One only needs to look at the sprint times of the 35-36 yr old Jamaican (whose name escapes me at the time of writing), in fact, one only needs to look at the times of all the Jamaican women. Fact is - dope or no dope MK is on a totally different planet over 400m. Greatest sprinter of all time and the only athlete, male of female, to have broken WRs at 50m, 60m, 100m, 110yds, 200m 220yds, 300m (her clocked time over the 1st 300m of this race is still the unoficcial WR) 400m, 4x100m and 4x400m. Total legend.
Have to agree. It's a level playing field. The best are the best.
haha are you mental? Sydney M Levrone is so clearly a better athlete. Look at the times Sydney was running in high school versus Kochs sham late career spurt when she was taking hard core steroids. The eastern bloc athletes in the 1980s werent being subtle they were 'blasting' roids and thus their records are miraculously still unbroken.
@@2011hwalker The east Germans ran a doping program that hundreds of athletes were a part of. Where are all their untouchable records that have lasted decades? They don't seem to be anywhere outside of Koch and Jarmila Kratochvílová. Two of the best female running talents ever. If you wish to make the argument that the drugs were alone were responsible for their times, rather than standard drug use of the time combined ALSO with greatness, then you must contend with why the hundreds of other athletes in the east German doping program who were also blasting steroids didn't also put up untouchable records. And no, Sydney is a great athlete. But she is not as great of an athlete as Marita Koch. If you put Sydney in Marita's time with Marita's training technology and science available her times would be even further behind.
Marita Koch is the greatest female athlete I have ever seen.
That's true. She was just unlucky that the turnaround in the GDR came too late. Otherwise she would have become a superstar.

I find it very suspicious that now the europeans arent that quick anymore especially the germans
You mean while they are being genocided and not allowed to use the same drugs as Africans? Do you find it suspicious that Usain Bolt and two of his training partners, all under the same coach, swept the 200m medals at the 2012 Olympics or that Bolt set 4 world records one year after coming a distant second to known drug user Tyson Gay, one of which was disqualified because of the drug use of his slower teammate? How about Bolt being able to win races while joking with the guy in the next lane or slowing down to celebrate, reminiscent of Lance Armstrong taking a phone call in the middle of the Tour de France?

@@YoREalDaddy lol
Myzelle, you are incorrect !! At the time of this meet, the 400m WR was held by Kratochvilova, who beat Koch's at the time WR in the World's in 1983 with her 47.99 (2nd in that final incidentally was Kochembova who acquired a then 3rd fastest time in history. Koch didn't compete at the 400 in those championships due to lack of preparation coming back from injury and therefore competed in and almost got the gold medal in the 100m instead, being beaten in that event only by Marlies Gohr. Koch did however get the gold in the 4x400m relay due to an unannounced line up change in the final that was deliberately planned as a strategy to beat the Czechs, she blasted around the 3rd leg thereby giving Kratochvilova too much to do in the last leg). Marita however wanted the 400m WR back as she considered it her own, and her training was geared specifically for this meet which she knew would be at altitude. What followed was the greatest piece of 400m sprinting in athletics history. And before anyone screams 'drugs', it was a level playing field for EVERYONE, even today they are STILL juiced up because the financial rewards far outweigh the risks. The current 2nd fastest time was run by an athlete who was subsequently banned for 3 missed tests but was reinstated upon appeal.
Simple fact is, Marita Koch would have owned ANY era she was in, a once in a lifetime talent. She set WR's at 100, 200, 300 and 400m, for comparison, Bolt never had the endurance to go 4 and Johnson never had the speed to do 1.
Great post. Thankyou for sharing. I agree with you entirely - Marita Koch is in a class of her own, past or present from 50m right the way to the 400m. I'm sure you already know that Marita ran a fully automatic 200m in 21.56 (training) but the wind wasn't measured. In any case she also ran a 21.78 (-1.3 wind) worth 21.65 in still conditions. Better than her former WR of 21.71. Marita was just wonderful and I wish she had competed in the 1987/88 seasons. Her achilles was a problem but I think really it was more about motivation. The way she destroyed the 1986 field in the Euro 400m was if anything, more impressive than the WR in 1985. I think it was worth another 47-something.
@@bodystorm Yes, I know of that 200m time. Generally, the IAAF don't accept times unless they are done in competition. O/w we'd have people saying "I broke the javelin, shot put, high jump" etc WR in training.
Marita also set WR's at 50m and 60m too, meaning she is the only athlete in history, male or female, to have set WR's over the entire range of sprints. 50m, 60m, 100m, 200m, 300m, 400m, 4x100m and 4x400m.
Incidentally, this is hardly known as the media tend to concentrate on the fact that she's held the 400m WR since 1985, but, Marita STILL holds the indoor 100m WR that she set in (iirc February) 1980, meaning it's 5 years older than even her 400m run. Incidentally, I will hopefully soon upload a 2+ hour video all about Marita that will include all of her available races in chronological order, plus interview footage and archive training and private footage too.

Modern doped athletes have trouble competing with East-Germany/Eastern Bloc records from 1980s. Hardly a coincidence.

her arms moved faster than any runner I've ever seen, a key to fast running and a world record 🙂
Doped up to their eyeballs! These ‘records’ need to be removed from the record books!!
Nein--- Marita ist die beste aller Zeiten. Das bleibt 500 Jahre so.
She is the goat track and field woman falling behind only Lewis and Bolt
Her world record should be abolished, the whole East German drug based athletic machine was the worst corruption in sports history, witnesses say she even talked openly about the steroids she was on. Now of course she denies it !!
Magnificent runner!!
sarà stata stradopata ,ma con giudizio, lei gode ottima salute ed è oggi una gradevole signora di 60'.
altre sono già morte ,flo.
This record might never be broken
I think Sydney McLaughlin is going to try.
@@jeffmarshall8765 And, I feel like Sydney may be on some juice of her own. She's aged quite rapidly in the face. Looks like a side effect.
Palumbo just missed the world record this past weekend. I think she can break it. Finish in 48.15 - second fastest ever. Both McLaughlin and Femke Bol could give it a go also.
@@buddhaparadox Sydney had no sudden rise to prominence, she was beating age group records from age 16-19. She is a freak talent. Her progression has been consistent. Drug users have some unexplained sudden improvement, the classic case being flo jo of course.
@@2011hwalker Not every drug user has to have an unexplained sudden improvement. Freak talents can start taking drugs later in their career too. Marion Jones didn't have some bizarre improvement and she was dominant in her youth. It's just suspicious for Sydney to not only break her own record over and over and over but flat-out SMASH it. Are you telling me if she runs something like a 49.76 you won't feel suspicious about it? I'm not saying I know for a fact she's on it but I can't help but wonder. Her technique is clearly very very refined and special tho so she has that going for her.
What a dude!
I think if they tested her today, something would still come out, and she is now 66 years old.!!
Its amazing how fast you can run when you are doped up.
Almost no woman can run this fast, doped up or not it takes more than that
So funny that American commentators say 'Coke' cos they can't say 'Cock' lol
DDR Nr.1 !
If Will Ferrell and Carrot Top had a love child.
Mind boggling
Regardless to what people might say she was a gifted athlete.
Begabt waren alle Athletinnen, die in diesem 400m-Finale standen. Gedopt vermutlich nur wenige.
2024 happy birthday WR
Display of strength unreal. She all but stopped last 10meters! Imagine had she not been spent those last 10-15 meters….it would have been 47.55- 47:56. I will end up coming back and watching this amazing performance 20 times in the next few days. 👍
Oh also they probably had trouble back then syncing up the field clock with the broadcast display because that display ran for a half second after she crossed the line in the 200m. I’m going to search see if there was any drama over the clock in that 200 final
She did not stop. What are you talking about?
No you’re right she ran through the line.
I can't see the point of admiring a performance that was built on the biggest state sponsored drug regime the world has ever known.
The pace was brutal, she totally faltered at the 42 second mark and barely made it over the line.
Doped or not, it was still a fantastic performance, just like Flo Jo in the 100 and 200 in Seoul.
Precisely--I love how people will dump on this drug-fueled record and still defend Flo Jo. What a joke. Anyone that's competed knows the reason all of the late 80s/early 90s records still stand, and it isn't because of superior athletic ability.
Flo Jo definitely doped. She always lost to Evelyn Ashford by 5 or 6 feet for years than suddenly her body looks different her voice lowers and now she beats Ashford easily.
@@marcbrandes9682 maybe Flo Jo took a few vacations in East Germany
I don't think this record can be beaten by a clean athlete, unfortunately.
Good thing no one is clean 😂
@@crabb9966 Just because modern athletes dabble in some doping, they aren't THIS doped out. They are forced to microdose and time their usage to beat tests. Marita Koch had the benefit of just flooding the f*ck out of her veins with testosterone-based compounds virtually worry-free.
To all those who keep talking about drugs etc. As Maradona put it in the documentary "Maradona by Kusturica" back in 2008: " in the whole of Italy only me and Caniggia were on drugs; all the others didn't even take an aspirin".
Let's admit it; everybody was on drugs, but some athletes are far superior. There are so many cases of freak athletes that appear once in 100+ years. ( Wilt Chamberlain, Karelin are some examples).
Марита Кох была суперклассным спринтером!
Há recodes e RECORDES . FEZ HISTÓRIA PRESENTE.
E há recordes com e sem doping
Marita is the best!
That is still the world record in the women's 400 37 years later.
@@michaelverbakel7632 Der steht auch noch 200 Jahre.
Everyone was doped but Marita was from space. She wouldn't have had to dope and would still have won.
Donna DeVarona, the swimmer??
Best job ❤
same as the 10.49 usa record on 100m. proven so...
I love Marita. She is just dynamite. Long live the queen of sprinting.
Yeah she's dope
That, gentlemen, is a man.
Queen dope head lol
Absolutely not the queen of sprinting.
The queen of doping.
When a healthy breakfast consisted of a vanilla flavoured testosterone-steroids shake.
There was no doubt that Koch was a gifted athlete. But she was under the influence of performance enhancing drugs, which made her superhuman. Anybody could see she had the legs of a man,... and only lots of testosterone could have caused that transformation. She was the best of a bad lot, cause loads of athletes were doing the same in that era. ALL their world records should be wiped from the record book right now... including Flo Jo.
Two words; Abbey Steiner
Steiner ain't going anywhere near this record.
I’ve always wondered who was that that came in second place
It takes balls to run that fast..
oppure un chimico molto bravo😂😂
40 años después...😮
So much dope you'd think she was Jamaican, mon!
Or American.
How fast would she have gone if she was on something?
47.60
Her name is pronounced Kock not Koke.
FloJo had almost as big a lead in her 1988 world record 100 m run. To me, her record was far more impressive. Her time was better than 40% of the men who raced in that Olympics.
flojo had the same testosterone level as the men who ran in the olympics too, she was doped to the gills.
@@2011hwalker And you know this how?
