The question most track and field fans were asking was what happened to the GDR women the following year at the Olympics in 1988. The GDR women swimmers were dominant in Seoul, but their track and field stars were not.
The men's program was always separate from the women's and less effective. Run by different people within the GDR. Read Charlie Francis' "Speed Trap" for his personal talks with GDR coaches of the time. Not every year was a banner year for the GDR, especially after other countries and athletes caught on to the NECESSITY of doping in order to remain competitive.
Jack Weger Especially the Americans and the Sovjets had caught with the East Germans between Rome and Seoul. East Germany still won a lot of medals, but they were not as dominant in track & field as they used to be.
Actually don’t think it was about closing the gap between Rome and Seoul. It was later revealed by USA Anti Doping who retested drug samples from the 1984 Olympics that lots of the Americans were doping then. If a number of the medal winners were dirty in LA84, it’s reasonable to believe they were just as dirty here at Roma87
Maybe so, Ilona Slupianek was the only East German who got caught in competitions. But In case of Americans, there are some exceptions; Pam Marshall, Diane Williams, Antonio Pettigrew didn't get caught and they had confessed use of doping. Also the BALCO-case happened quite accidentally, I think.
