  • In this video, we pick up with our ongoing "budget project" on the 1993 Kawasaki Mule 500 KAF300 B1 with the FE290D engine. At the beginning of the video, our budget project is at a total cost of $335, which includes the UTV, purchased December of 2019 on Facebook Marketplace.
The parts used in this video, are as follows:
    21121-2067 Ignition Coil ($40)
    21160-2051 Cap Assembly Plug ($12)
FE290D Carburetor Repair Kit - generic eBay ($12)
Hopefully, our demonstration will provide a how to on these repairs and/or assessments. Using a cheapo handheld voltmeter and the specifications in the Factory Service Manual, we tested the resistance in ohms of our stator, ignition coil, and igniter. We installed a new ignition coil and we adjusted the air gap of the ignition coil, ensuring a gap of 0.3mm. We installed a new spark plug, NGK BPR5ES, but could have alternatively used a BP5ES.
Finally, we removed the carburetor and cleaned it with carburetor cleaning spray. A carb kit purchased was the source for some new carburetor parts, the air/fuel mix adjustment screw, a needle valve, a float pin, and some various springs and gaskets.
By the end of the video, we have spent $412.50 and see more costs on the horizon!
We're getting really close to installing the engine back into the Kawasaki Mule. If you haven't already done so, please subscribe to see the previous videos and the ones to come! Thanks so much!

Your meter leads have resistance. If you short them together while reading ohms, you will see a number other than zero. Perhaps it will be .3, or .5 or so. When you measure the resistance of the coil, subtract the lead resistance. For higher resistance values the lead resistance will not be significant. Precision ohmmeters actually use four wires to measure resistance, but that's another story.
I just pulled the same engine from a John Deere Gator. It ran but burned a lot of oil. I'm hoping to pull the piston and get a good look at the cylinder walls and rings. Right now I'm cleaning the engine down before I take it apart. I hope my clutch removal tool fits. Thanks for the video, very helpful.

That makes perfect sense! Thanks for the information. I appreciate your informative comment. Glad the video helped. I have other videos on the FE290D engine, where I got into the internals and replaced the rings. I have been very happy with the results. Great little engine!

There’s a wiring diagram in the service manual. I never could find a free one online, so i bought one on ebay. It has been invaluable when diagnosing problems.
