Boat Won't Start Again After Running and/or Two Beeps Every Minute - How to Change the IAC Valve

  • In this video, I share my recent experience with my boat, a Tahoe 234 with the Mercruiser 350 MAG MPI Engine. The boat would start great at the beginning of the day when cold, but after running for a while, it would not start without disengaging the transmission and starting the boat in wide-open-throttle position. One of our last trips out prior to performing this fix, we experienced two beeps every minute until we returned safely to the marina. Some research on the internet led me to believe that the culprit was a faulty Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve. This simple fix was quick, easy, and fixed our problem!
    Other similar engines that this fix should work on, as well, are the 5.0L and MX 6.2L MPI sterndrive engines.
    Since the 350 MAG MPI Engine has been produced over a number of years, there are some variations in the engine model numbers, with respect to the necessary parts. The video attempts to detail those differences and provides the necessary OEM part numbers.
    The engine on this Tahoe 234 has a model number that falls into the range of 0W650000 thru 1A299999. Parts needed for these models are as follows:
    35-8M2001030 - IAC Muffler
    862998 - IAC Valve
    Similar engines that were produced previous to mine, falling into the range of 0M300000 thru 0W6499999, would need the following parts:
    35-863829 - IAC Muffler
    862998 - IAC Valve
    27-8M0119616 - IAC Gasket
    I am not a licensed mechanic and do not pretend to be. I'm just a fellow boat-owner trying to share my experience and hopefully save you a little cash. Anything that you do to your boat is your responsibility and, as always, if you're not comfortable doing this, consult with a real mechanic.
    Please feel free to share your thoughts and ideas in the comments!

      @@budgetprojectsbydavid5263 yes it worked for me, I think the muffler came out because I found it on top of the throttle plate. I didn’t want to take any chances on troubleshooting the iac valve so I put a new one in along with a new muffler. Smooth and quiet now. Thanks!

    Thanks for your video. I had the dreaded 2 beeps not long after we purchased or 2010 mercruiser 5.7 Horizon. I found the drive oil to be low and toped it up. Problem solved. I'll be checking my IAC valve and muffler before summer. Cheers

    Hello David! Great video! I have a 2011 6.2 L. engine in my boat that is having idle problems (low idle) and have been looking for a video that shows how to replace the IAC. All the previous videos show the procedure on the older models that use the 35-863829 muffler. Yours is the first video that showed the replacement on a newer model. When you took off the IAC on your boat the gasket remained in place without tearing and you just installed the new IAC without replacing the gasket. My mechanic told me to buy a new IAC and the adaptor that the muffler sits in because the gasket is not sold separately. I am hoping that my old IAC comes off without tearing the gasket. Could you tell me the year of your boat and how many hours you have on your engine. I am hoping that I can install a new IAC only. The new adaptor looks to be an additional $100.00. Again, thank you for the help!!

    Great video! I have the same motor with a Bravo 3 and I'm having an issue where it drops RPM and then catches when going into forward or reverse. The dealer is telling me it's normal and the computer is controlling it like a shift interrupt switch would on an alpha. Hello thanks for this video. Would this change the rpms of the engine. My engine looks the same as yours 5.0 mpi. And is running at really low rpms at idle. Around 500. Can't see where to adjust idle. But I'm going to check these filters thanks

    • @budgetprojectsbydavid5263
      @budgetprojectsbydavid5263  2 роки тому

      I think it should smooth out a rough idle. If it’s electronically fuel injected, I don’t think you have any control over the idle rpm. The computer manages that for you based on sensors such as the IAC valve/sensor.

    Would this cause reduced power? I have the hard start issue. My beeps seem to be about 2 minutes apart. Is the length between beeps a different fault? After warming up my boat actually starts fine. My vessel view is showing no fault?

    • @budgetprojectsbydavid5263
      @budgetprojectsbydavid5263  2 роки тому

      I think it could cause the system to intentionally reduce power to 80% or something like that. Two beeps per minute is a soft engine error and is the exact error i was getting when the rectangular iac muffler (foam filter) on the base of the iac valve’s mount was clogged. I changed that filter and my problems went away immediately. It’s just a small rectangular piece of foam, but it set me back $20 on Amazon. I’ll see if i can find the link.

      Preach, brother! I have a ‘53 Willys M38A1 that was built with simple systems and redundancies like double serpentine belts. I like the points, condenser, and 1 barrel Carter carburetor. The fuel pump is mechanical, but it seems to work just fine even though it’s 70 years old. If it’s not running, you can usually figure out why rather quickly.
      Contrast that with my daily driver 2007 LX470. One knock sensor starts acting up and the car goes into limp mode. To test and replace the sensor, you have to remove the intake manifold. Not something you would want to deal with on the trail or out in BFE. Crazy!
