  • In this video, we pick up with our ongoing "budget project" on the 1993 Kawasaki Mule 500 KAF300 B1 with the FE290D engine. At the beginning of the video, our budget project is at the total cost of $412.50. The parts used in this video are as follows:
    Kawasaki 11060-2122 (replaced old sku 11009-2940) - Crank Case Gasket, 15.5x22x1 - $2.82
    Kawasaki 92049-2220 (replaced old sku 92049-2103) - Oil Seal - $9.49
    Kawasaki 92045-2168 - Crank Case Bearing, Ball 6306JRCM - $20.64
    Kawasaki 92144-2166 - Cam shaft ACR mechanism spring - $1.00
    ACR = Automatic Compression Release.
    We had hoped for an easy project, trying to remedy motor oil that appeared to be leaking from the deteriorated and old crank case gasket. However, things took a turn for the interesting when the crank case bearing stayed on the crank shaft when we removed the crank case cover. Our disassembly process also includes the removal of the flywheel when we were considering removing the oil pump to reinstall the crank shaft. We discuss how the factory service manual's suggestion and demonstrated how we did not need to perform this step.
    By the end of the video, we have spent $446.45 and see it only going up from here! We're getting really close to reinstalling the engine back into the Kawasaki Mule. If you haven't done so already, please subscribe to see the previous videos and the ones to come. Thanks so much!

    I took apart a fe290d motor just yesterday from a Gator and had the exact same problems that you had. Next time I will remove the rust from the crankshaft before I take the crankcase cover off.

      Yeah, live and learn, I guess. Since rebuilding mine has been running great! I had so much fun with that 2wd mule this year at camp. Good luck with your project!

      I think the 550 has the exact same 290cc engine that the 500 does. Partzilla has some good diagrams that show the parts for your ride and their prices are pretty competitive.

    Hey there David not sure if I missed it or not, but you got any tricks to getting the belt back on? I tried rolling it on with both pulleys connected, but to no avail.

      Hey, JC, I do, but both pulleys have to be off. Put the belt on the pulleys and slide them both on at the same time. That is the best that i have come up with.
