this Clip got recomended to me, i am a tinkerer so kinda enjoy watchin it. liking how you do the Grip, maybe next time use some wood with pattern and Oiled it? make it look more classic. oh and for the rust removal, consider dipping it in Rust remover first to loosen the rust, and do Electrolysis after. to save the original patina. and after scrub it with 0000 steel wool and Shine it with machine and oiled after. if it's me, im not gonna File or Grind or rough the Blade surface. since its a historic pieces. anyway Nice Vid, thx for the time spend restorin
by the way this is a cutlass commonly called KLEWANG ( it refers to a tribal weapon in Indonesia but the two have little to nothing to do with one another), the same weapon was copied by the Americans and it is the blade that was used (officially) in the last ever recorded hand to hand combat involving a sword, sabre or cutlass ( from wikipedia “ ....A United States Marine Corps engineer NCO is reported to have killed an enemy with a Model 1941 cutlass at Inchon during the Korean War. A cutlass is still carried by the recruit designated as the Recruit Chief Petty Officer for each training company unit of recruits while at the US Navy Recruit Training Command. In a message released 31 March 2010, the US Navy approved optional wear of a ceremonial cutlass as part of the Chief Petty Officer dress uniform, pending final design approval. That approval came in January 2011, and the cutlass was made available for ceremonial wear by Chief Petty Officers in August of that year.
That's was a piece of history. You used SCREWS instead of pinning it. This screams that you don't know what you're doing and should not be attempting restoration of historical swords. Please do not do this again.
This sword is NOT a VOC sword, it was used by the KNIL (much later the dissolution of the VOC) and is a model made round 1911 and used until WWII in Indonesia , the Hembrug factory in Haarlem opened in 1895 and could have never made a VOC weapon because that was dissolved in 1799!
That thing will never hold an edge now after you sanded it that hard... might wanna heat reat and temper it again. And the handle is an abortion. Shouldve left it

Blade apart fro the tang was fine after its bath tbh. Sorry made it look terrible with that sanding method.
