  • Listen to sound clips of the incredible Yamaha Stagepas 1K portable Line Array P.A. system. In this first video I'm playing an acoustic finger-style blues and a pop strumming groove directly into one channel of the Stagepas 1K. EQ on the guitar and 1K are set flat. I've added 50% hall reverb to the channel. All audio is captured in the room by my camera microphones. (The Zoom Q8).
    Yamaha have filmed in-depth videos sharing all of the technical specs on the IK line arrays. Here are the direct links to those videos.

    Hey Robbie. I stumbled upon an article you wrote (blog post?) regarding live sound as an acoustic solo performer. There was a link to your cover of Rock On. I loved it.
    I've watched a few more of your videos - love your slide playing! I play a lot of slide also. Looking to get another guitar (or two)as I use a variety of tunings.
    Yamaha is on my short list.
    I appreciate your talent and informative content. I'm a subscriber!

    Sound samples much appreciated. Is it just your camera‘s mic, or was the sound incredibly bright in reality (which wouldn‘t surprise me since piezos tend to be that way anyhow)? Would have loved to also hear some vocals through the speakers, so as to get a more realistic impression of just how warm/mellow they can sound.

      Hi Scott, I was trying to be authentic to capturing the sound you'd hear in the room, but as you say camera microphones don't do the Stagepas justice. I have other vIdeos that show layering of parts and vocals through the stagepas...please check it out to hear how that sounds with the voice and multiple guitar parts. ua-cam.com/video/GCFYsw8ek4c/v-deo.html

    Great video! I've been contemplating purchasing one of these since their release. I currently use QSC K12.2's with a Yamaha MG10XU mixer. I'm a full-time singer-songwriter that performs solo, as a duo (with a lead guitarist), and as a Trio (with a drummer using brushes) at small venues on a weekly basis.
    Do you think the Stagepas 1k is an upgrade and a great replacement to my current setup?

    • @robbiecalvoguitar
      @robbiecalvoguitar  4 роки тому +4

      Thank you for the compliment on this video. The Stagepas 1K was designed for guys like us that play in a myriad of musical situations. The 5 channel mixer, EQ, 3 reverbs and one echo per channel should be more than enough inputs for your needs. At venues and clinics people can't believe how polished the sound is, the balance between lows, mids and highs cross- over seamlessly. If you play solo you'll also enjoy being in-line with the P.A. to reduce any chance of feedback and you'll hear yourself without any need for monitors. It's also has an optional rolling dolly that you can leave the Stagepas 1K in at gigs. The cover straps to the dolly for easy pick up and go! I hope that helps.

      @@robbiecalvoguitar Thanks for replying and for the great insight. My only concern is the one knob EQ. Were you able to dial in a good EQ for your voice and guitar? And have you pushed the system to see how loud it can get? (Does it peak easily?)

    • @robbiecalvoguitar
      @robbiecalvoguitar  4 роки тому +3

      @@RamDanesseMusic I actually think the one-knob EQ is genius. It's sweepable through the variations and it's easy to find what you are looking for. I personally haven't had to use the EQ at all. Yamaha have done an incredible job of simplifying what most people find confusing...and sometimes too many options can destroy your sound if you don't have any idea about EQ and frequency adjustments. When I use Helix I run both IK's totally flat. For Acoustic guitar it's worth experimenting with the EQ sweep to find the 'sweet spot' for your particular guitar size and pickup design. These towers pack a big punch. I've played in some reasonably big venues and they cover the room beautifully. With a 170 degree horizontal spread and 30 degree vertical you have a smooth sound in any listening position.

    I currently run our backing tracks in mono out of the mixer into a Bose L1 Compact, and daisy chain into a 2nd Compact. I want to add a Stagepas 1K because they have more output than the L1 Compacts. Should I run into the 1K, then use the LINK OUT into one Compact, then daisy chain as usual, or out of the MONITOR OUT into one Compact? Again, mono tracks and a couple mics in the mixer, to speakers. Also, Compacts only have hi-z input jacks. Can I run an " XLR to 1/4" " cable from 1K into Compact? Or do I need a transformer coupler?

    • @robbiecalvoguitar
      @robbiecalvoguitar  3 роки тому

      Hi Wayne, I also have Stagepas 1K and The Bose L1 compacts. Run the Bose from the 1K Link output as you'll get the full volume ...so you can adjust the Bose volume to taste. Best cable to use is an XLR female to TRS 1/4 inch jack. Connect the link out (XLR) to the Bose 1/4 inch input with the TRS. The monitor outputs on the 1K are great for sending to video cameras or personal monitor systems. You don't need a transformer coupler. You can't run 1k to the XLR on the compact...it'll feedback wildly.

    • @robbiecalvoguitar

      Hi Dee, Thank you. Yes, this system would easily handle two vocals and two guitars. One tower would handle that in mono...two towers would easily handle a band setup including keyboards.

      Hi Paul, I've compared the Stagepas 1K to a lot of line array systems and actually own a pair of Bose L1 Compacts. The Stagepas, in my humble opinion is far superior to everything else. They have a clarity, warmth and professional sheen that sets them apart. The lows are full, the mids clear and the high are rounded for a smooth high end. I love them and think you will too.

      I own a Stagepas1K, and play a digital piano through it every Sunday at church. It sounds great. Full on the lows, and crisp on the highs. Of course, you have to eq it properly. And also of course, it doesn’t sound in stereo if you only have one, but this does not take away from the sound.

    What are your thoughts on the Yamaha AC5R?

    • @robbiecalvoguitar
      @robbiecalvoguitar  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Kurt, The AC5R is in a class of it's own. The highest quality build and tone-woods, plus a really comfortable action and neck profile. Add to that the the onboard pickup system that uses microphone modeling. A Neumann Condenser and Royer Ribbon Mic models that can be added to the sound are so good for direct recording and warming-up live performances. The AC3R is also a great option.

    • @kurtaaron9478

      @@robbiecalvoguitar Thank you for taking the time to reply. I have an old Yamaha FG 301 from the 70's made in Japan that I bought on Craigslist. I had a k and k pickup and a bone nut and saddle installed and It sounds great. But I do want a high end all solid wood guitar also. The AC5R looks and sounds really cool, but do you think it's as nice and sounds as big as a Gibson or Martin?

    • @robbiecalvoguitar
      @robbiecalvoguitar  3 роки тому +1

      @@kurtaaron9478 I hear stories like that all the time...old Yamaha guitars sounding great with a little care. I think it's testimony to the original build quality. Martin and Gibson both make exceptional acoustic guitars but the AC5R has a better pickup system and is all solid tone woods for half the cost of the other two. Here's another demo I did with the AC5R...also if you can find one, the all solid Koa AC4R or A4K is too die for and is super warm. Why do you need two? Column arrays usually have a wide throw.

    • @robbiecalvoguitar
      @robbiecalvoguitar  2 роки тому +1

      One column line-arrays do have a wide audio field. On the Stagepas IK it's around 180 degrees. However, it still a mono signal. Having two columns allows you to play music in stereo. For example any tracks (That are always recorded stereo) and I use Line 6 Helix in stereo for my guitars, percussion loops and vocals. It's a dramatically better sound in stereo (regardless of what system you use). You don't need two, but two sounds better and more professional on any P.A. system.

    • @WWeiss-nv5vz
      @WWeiss-nv5vz 2 роки тому

      @@robbiecalvoguitar Makes sense, but these column arrays are being marketed with 8 channel digital mixers. Running stereo you obviously run an external mixer bypassing the internal mixer. Also I heard if you use two, they should be like 15 feet apart or you run into phase issues??

    • @robbiecalvoguitar
      @robbiecalvoguitar  2 роки тому +1

      @@WWeiss-nv5vz Each line array has 3 main input channels, one stereo input channel and an eighth inch channel for MP3 players etc. I run my setup using Helix as my sound source and send a left and right signal to one channel on each side. If I work with other musicians, I have plenty of channels for them to plug into.
      I've played hundreds of gigs with this pair of IK systems at a maximum of 10 feet apart. If you slightly stagger the two systems there isn't any phase issues. I have comments all the time on how my sound is superior to other systems that other artist's bring in to the venues I play at...it is by far the best rig I've ever had. If you get the chance ... go and plug into one, or two and you'll hear what I'm talking about.
