Yamaha Stagepas 1K - Connecting to Sound Desk for Maximum Usability

  • Sounds easy eh? No. Read all this:
Here's how to connect a mixer desk to two Stagepas 1K units and get stereo (whilst still being able to use the Bluetooth connectivity).
You CAN just go from the desk Left and Right output into the L(Mono) input of each 1K unit (using the ST channel again) but you WON'T get the Bluetoothed music in the other speaker.
This method caters for the maximum usage ability.
Confusing eh? This isn't covered in the manual.

This is such a helpful video, thanks so much. I have only bought my unit today, and I’m tossing up on a second for my band. Either way knowing how to connect the desk is awesome. Thank you.

Thank you so much!! I just purchased the Yamaha 1k mk11 yesterday and could not figure out how to add a mixer! I also have two Bose L1 compacts but they don’t produce enough volume for my large events and the Yamaha is more powerful and less expensive than the Bose Pro16. Great video!

I’m going to try this way tonight, I currently have mine set up for my vocals with external Yamaha mixer going from mixer to channel 1 & 2 and mic line in and last week bigger venue, more people but cranked it up and it didn’t have the power like you say … it started distorting! I had to up the level on each speaker hence my coming here to find alternatives for set up. It’s a great machine though, best thing I purchased and I just wheel it in on the Yamaha trolley wheels 😃

Hi, I would appreciate info about your best practice with levels for dj/disco setup when using the external mixer. How to set the stereo channel and master channel on 1K with the ones on ext. mixer to have proper headroom and to avoid clipping? I will try the set up with additional mixer to get more output power. Thank you for all your help.

Hi so sorry for late reply, thank you very much for your advice, I'm now using dry mixer to one stagepas and linking the other, and connecting my active monitor to the desk, have to admit great sound running for 2 hours, then I notice volume drop and clip light coming on, I know this saves the pa from being damaged but, it's quite embarrassing when going full swing people dancing and suddenly sound drops down, maybe the bass/drums on the keyboards is too loud, and possibly my vocal is too powerful, but seriously the stagepas 1k is a great little pa system overall, just have to watch my levels and pull back a little,
another trick I think that can help is I stand the stagepas 1k' on 2 beer crates, just to get the top speakers box over people's heads a little, as we already have been told by yamaha there's a great dispersion of sound up/down and L/R, still in experimental state, but learning each time I'm out playing, so is there any more ideas that you can pass on here? But in the meantime thanks for all pervious help and advice

Hi mate... me again. Just testing out different configs with the two stagepas 1ks and tried this way again but with a different mixer ( an alto pro live 802) as opposed to the behringer I had tried before. My question to you is... have you found any problems with lack of headroom/ volume , when using the two together without a separate mixer? Or just the speakers and the editor app? I was all about ready to get rid of these, thinking I've made a huge mistake in buying them. Until I tried with the second alto mixer. Using this mixer, I had the volume on the stagepas at halfway or 12 o'clock and the difference in headroom is amazing! I'm now not sure what to do? I'll have to try them in a live situation to evaluate where to go next? Any thoughts from your experiences with them would be helpful. Cheers. Al

Alan Henry I’ve now done two successful gigs with these, just using them WITHOUT a desk - the first was a wedding where I only needed to use one: me on guitar and a singer using a mic.. this worked perfectly and had plenty of volume. The second was me and my two buddies - three guitars and three vocals, along with one cajon mic - all plugged into the units themselves. This meant that I had to use the OUTPUT link from one to the other’s LINK input, then from that unit’s OUTPUT link to the first unit’s LINK input, so it made a loop and every instrument/vocal came through both units. This worked really well and we didn’t have to turn up more than a third on any input volume, and the Master volumes were set at 12 o’clock. Plenty more power of required.
I saw a video the other day which demonstrated the App for mixing, and that showed the Master volumes being set fairly high - around the 75% mark.. it meant that there was loads of headroom to be controlled with the app. The only gripe I have with the app is that it seems to default all the channels to their sliders being set at MAX, so it’s worth bringing these way down first before manually raising the Master volume on the unit.
I think it’s fair to say that different external mixers seem to output at different levels, that’s for sure. My Mackie ProFX12 is ‘quieter’ than a little ALTO one I’ve got.. so it’s just a matter of getting your levels right to start with on each mixer whenever use it them. Every gig seem different with them though - much like any PA system I guess, it’ll depend on positioning of the units and the kind of room they’re in. I am, however, still impressed with them and I think they’ll serve me very well.
The only thing I’ve found that is a constant wherever I use them is that they are a bit bass heavy... but that’s quickly remedied with a tweak of the EQ’s.

Hey thank you for video...is this workaround apply if I only have 1 Yamaha StagePas ? I have desk mixer and would like to utilize that , so I'm wondering if this is the appropriate way to integrate my mixer for one stagepas? Thank you

Hi Jason, if using only one STAGEPAS unit it’s best to go from the MAIN OUT outputs on the desk into the stereo channel 4 on the unit using 2 Jack plugs.
Or… go from the HEADPHONE OUT on the desk into any of the other channels. But the first one is the recommended way 👍

Hello! First of all I wanted to thank you for the tutorial, it is awesome! But I have a doubt, what would be the best way to plug the Stagepas 1k into my desk mixer Yamaha MG10XU if I only have 1 unit? I would need this for 2 electro acoustic guitars and 1 mic. Thanks again!!

    • @Bigtel1970
      @Bigtel1970  8 місяців тому

Same way.. just go from the XLR MAIN OUT’s to the 1K’s stereo channel (both cables)
You have the first four channels on your mixer for plugging in mics and guitars - it’ll run perfectly that way

  • @thesacredwoods7960

Thanks for that, really helpful. One question: the sound you send to the other speaker is going into the link, which is the channel that provided all the problems when going from the mixer. Does the second speaker work ok? Can it be controlled at all by its own volume control?

    • @Bigtel1970
      @Bigtel1970  4 роки тому

Hi, as you suspect there's no volume control on the second unit when doing this.. weird, especially if you'd need to run one unit louder than the other. Here's a thought though.. maybe by going out of the LINK OUTPUT but then into the other units' ST channel L(MONO) channel (using an XLR to jack) then there WOULD be ability to adjust the volume. I'll give it a go and report back

Hi Alan, I went from the L1 Compacts to these and, now that I've got the connections sorted correctly I'm happy. Sound-wise they are very comparable to the Bose. A little tweak of EQ Mid's pretty much make them the same. They're very powerful though - not only will I use them on my own (just one, for wedding guitar stuff) but I also play as part of a three-piece so I'll use two for that with the Mackie desk, then I can also use them for a DJ set I sometimes get to do at the end of a wedding, just Bluetoothing my iPad straight to one and having the other one linked (this is where the extra power really shines through. I certainly can't knock the Bose - they were brilliant - it was just needing reverbs, extra channels and Bluetooth that veered me off in this direction. I'd say go for it!

Hi I'm back again, I thank you for your advice on purchasing the 2 1ks, I have to admit they are powerful as you said here,
I linked one to the other, excellent, I then decided to link up my dry desk, Dynacord CMS
1000, and to be honest I actually found the volume was there, I did as you said what to do when connecting up my desk, I actually found the sound to be much better and punchy by just using the 1ks mixer,
So my question is, is my problem the mixing desk I'm using, or do you think I should buy the desk you actually use, as you seem to have actually did you work to make the 1ks sound their very best,
I have tried the Evolve 50 did not fancy them at all, it's not the cost it's the fact you get more value from the yamaha stagepas 1ks, so is it the fact I'm not sitting my mixer up right or should I purchase the one you have, I might add I'm so fussy when it comes to reverb
I like to use reverb with a little delay or echo added, whereas some mixing desks just offers you the one choice, sorry if its long winded, but I'm anxious to know what you think here,
await your reply, thanks again for your advice to date,

Hi Martin (apologies for lateness of reply)… well, if you’ve got the CMS 1000 then you’ve got yourself a decent bit of gear - it will be fine! I’m assuming that you are outputting from the MAIN OUT’s LEFT & RIGHT into the number 4 channel (the double input) then using the LINK output from the same 1K to connect to the second 1K?
The only thing that would/could effect the overall sound at this point would be the EQ knob on the 1K.. I tend to leave this at the 12 o’clock position so it’s good for vocals and music. If volume is is problem just ramp up the channel 4 volume to 3/4 full and turn up the master volume - no need to touch the second 1K as this is all now controlled from the first once it’s LINK’ed. Use only your reverb effects from your Dynacord otherwise you’ll get a strange sound if two reverbs are used together. Does this all help?

@@Bigtel1970 absolutely a massive help, yes I was setting it up exactly as you described to me, however I
did not take note of the level on channel 4, nor did I completely roll off the reverb knob or take notice on where the eq was set,
Silly me, but I'll run the complete system up again and report back, I also did a little experiment on connecting my stagepas to my audio interface and I did a recording directly to my Recording software and it came out excellent to my surprise and rendered and burned to cd to play in my car,
Yeah your right Amazing TC the yamaha stagepas 1k is the bees knees 😉

Thank you so much for this great video and all your information and advice. I've been eyeing off a pair of Stagepass 1Ks and am considering selling my HK Audio Lucas Impact system to fund the purchase. I do really love the HK but I really want something that I can take out as a single system for simple PA tasks as well as taking both of them for larger gigs where I either use an external mixer or link the 2 1Ks together and use their own mic pres. I play accordion and often have rhythm acoustic guitar accompaniment and bass DIed into the mixer. How would I go using 2 x Stagepass 1K for an audience of up to 200 people? Would I need fold back monitors if I have them set up behind us? The marketing hype claims that these line array PA systems are great at rejecting feedback. Thank you so much for your reply and once again, great video! Cheers

Hi Mad Ness, did you end up buying these? I am considering buying 2 of Stagepas 1K units for a small band (4 microphone inputs, 3 line inputs i.e. keyboards, guitar). The main purpose of buying these is so as to not have to carry an external mixer. I am wondering if you share your experience.

@@medmus I haven't been doing any gigs so there's been no need to purchase any new PA equipment and I've still got my HK Lucas Impact system which is truly excellent and no doubt a better system for larger gigs up to 300 people. I used mine for a gig of 350 people and the HK still had plenty of headroom to spare! Saying that, whilst the Stagepass IK looks great, Yamaha should upgrade it with a Stagepass 2K with higher SPL like the EV Evolve 50M and at least 4 XLR mic inputs and better eq. Whilst more expensive, the EV Evolve 50M is what the Stagepass IK should have been and the fact that you can hook up 2 of them via Ethernet and being able to control both as one larger stereo system remotely is awesome. However 2 x Stagepass 1K will still be a great set up for your band if you don't want to use an external mixer and don't require more than 6 mic inputs.

Currently, my gigs are for upto 125 people only and I do not see it increasing beyond 150 mark in the next 1-3 yrs. As I am based in regional Australia, I am unable to listen to HK Audio products as its only dealer is 2000 km away.

I’ve recently sold this pair to a friend and he went from his desk using XLR cables but had bought adapters that took the female XLR ends into 1/4" jack plugs. When tried, the sound was weak. OK gig down and to be completely honest, the sound was very good, I did not go direct I used my external yamaha emx 5000 mixer, and the stagepas` s linked, I set level at 12 and master to 3, and mode to 3 also, played 2hrs and last 15 mins I see the red light go on and off on the stagepas, and I felt the sound had decreased, maybe it was due to the desk I honestly don't know, I mean the stagepas are 1k after all so
Was the desk at fault or the stagepas could not handle dancing in the dark, I loved the sound at the start of the night but after 2hrs I honest honestly don't know??
funny thing is the amount of praise I got was also incredible at the end of the gig, but I got a fright on the last song, maybe I pushed it too hard, expecting the stagepas's to output the same punch as my Dynacord P5 system,
the sound was amazing at the start of the night that's for sure,
one thing I feel is a let down is when hooking up a monitor, you can't decide what to want more or less of, and if pushed feedback occurs,
Oh one thing I did do an hour and half into the gig was turn mode to club, yeah I possibly pushed it to much, and if wanting volume left mode at music setting, I had the eq set to 9 o clock, don't get me wrong you did say I would have a brilliant gig, which I did in fairness, is it the mixer I used??
If I got the clarity on my vocal from the stagepas I would have just used its mixer,
    So to conclude once again
Excellent gig up to last 15mins
where I saw the red light come on and felt sound decrease a little, has this ever happened you at your gigs, and again the mixer, will I get a new one to suit, as I was saying previous I want to keep my Dynacord cms 1000 for the powermax P5 only,
So can you make any sense of all this, and if I were to get a new mixer do you recommend yours, you would miss the 2 separate FX channels like on the yamaha emx and cms
Yeah very fussy when it comes to the effects...
I'm sorry to be going on and on about all this, but absolutely appreciate all your advice and help, and perhaps this will help others too,

Hi someone on another site happen to say when connecting up your own dry mixer, to come out of the desk L/R and instead of going into channel 4 on the 1k, to go channels 1 and 2, EQs to 12 o clock, levels to 12 o clock and master 3 quarters way up, so I'm wondering is this person right, and also to add only use effects from your desk, ensuring the 1k effects is off, I have a gig this weekend so, it will be first time on stage with my 1ks, and so want the best out of this system as possible,
if this way works what I want to know is, what are the advantages and disadvantages or stick with the way you describe here and only use channel 4 L1 and R2 🙄🤔👍

No, don’t do it it - the stereo inputs on channel 4 are set for the correct line levels for doing this. It’s not to say you ‘couldn’t’ do it the other way but why bother when a channel has specifically been made to suit that application. Do your gig this way and you’ll have a great gig! 👌👌

Hi Matt.. I can only go on what I personally think.. and these are my thoughts...
      1. I've not been tempted to change these for anything else in all the time I've owned them - which, for me, is a miracle as I've often chopped and changed.
      2. These things continue to impress me on every usage. I've used two for wedding disco's in big halls and they've kicked the proverbial ass and there's no music genre they can't handle, from vocal, acoustic, dance electronica to dubstep these things take them in their stride. I used only one two weeks ago in a busking situation with my buddies and I actually quite honestly stopped playing to listen to my mate's vocal as it was just sublime. I play at weddings, as mentioned in the video, and just one is enough to create a lovely warm sound suited to that occasion.. but then I've also channelled a full band through them with no problem.
      3. They're reliable - nothing has had a blip in all the time I've used them.
      4. Clarity is key in most of the things I need them for.. and they deliver that perfectly.
If I was going to mark anything down I would say they are slightly weak in the lower mid's.. but I found a tweak of the EQ knob fixed that - but that was only me being extremely fussy about how my Spanish guitar sounded... no-one else agreed so it's probably more likely a glitch in my own hearing.
My advice, buy them. If you get stuck with anything just drop me a line at: onebigidea@hotmail.co.uk and I'd be more than happy to talk through anything. If I could show you them working, either singularly or in unison then I would... they really are 'the tits' :)

I'm looking at this as an option for myself playing gigs. Just a single vocal channel and the acoustic guitar. Would you recommend just using the on-board mixer, or would an external mixer be better?
I was sold on the Maui 28 G2 system, but a friend was using the Maui 11 and it just died on him mid set. No answer yet on what the cause was. The local music shop pointed me towards the Yamaha Stagepas 1K, and I'm so glad I came across this video since it showed how to potentially hook up the mixer if required.

    • @Bigtel1970
      @Bigtel1970  3 роки тому

Hi Dan, this is a superb option for exactly what you want to do - and you wouldn't need an external mixer to do it - unless you've got more than 4 inputs required. If it's just a straightforward guitar and one vocal mic setup you have then just plug straight into channels 1 and 2 and you'll have the reverb on the 1K to select and change SEPARATELY for each channel. (Some of these systems have an overall reverb setting that acts on all the channels at the same 'depth' but Yamaha kept it as it should be with independent controls). My primary usage for these is for doing exactly what you want to do - singer and guitarist. These things are superb... one is well enough for what you'd need too.. I just bought 2 as I occasionally do wedding discos too.. and then it really thumps! Buy one, definitely, you'll be super impressed.. the only thing I'd suggest is to ignore the MIC/LINE setting when plugging in your guitar and just use the MIC setting.. for some reason the LINE setting is very low. I had a Maui 28 some years ago.. it was nice, but this is better. My guitars, both my Spanish guitar and my Martin acoustic sound amazing through this - there's no real way I can demonstrate it easily, just have to take my word for it! Good luck!

This for our 4 pc band, hard hitting drums, loud gitarist. I don't run bass thru PA, just kick drum.
We play small-med clubs/restaurants/bars maybe 30-50 people at a time there. But I would only be buying one of these array speaker systems for now. I think we could pull off most our gigs with just one. But our PA does the work very well now for our gigs. Just tired of carrying, speakers, stands, cables, etc. I'd prolly still need our 5 channel mixing board and of course the 2 QSC P8's as monitors. And I might use the EV powered sub with this system still. So I wont be lightening my load all the much.
The smallest clubs/restaurant gigs one of these would work, Im fairly certain. I'm getting convinced of their sound quality, just debating the actual use of getting just one for certain gigs. I used one CP8 as a main on a stand+ one CP8 as a floor monitor at recent monthly restaurant gig and that worked well. Our female lead vox has a very big voice for our blues/RnB/funk tunes. So we'll see. Very good info here. Guess I won't know until I try one first hand. peace, e.

Hi there, thanks for doing this video. I was eagerly looking at a pair of these for our 5 piece band and holding off my purchase until doing so. Initially I listened to the Yammy and then cross referenced it with the EV Evolve 50 beside it in store. That sold me on the EV Evolve 50's. I really wanted to like the Yamaha Stagepas 1K though the EV's were the same price at that point so it was a no brainer for me. Also having a Mackie DL16 digital desk, I didn't really require the on board mixing facilities either.
The array is where the Yamaha couldn't keep up as the 10 x 1.5 inch drivers were outdone by EV's 8 x 3.5 inch drivers and additional waveguide.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that EV have this type of system wrapped up ATM IMHO, and I was really hoping the Yamaha Stagepas 1K would win out in the end, as the sound, power, dispersion and overall quality was excellent but the EV has the edge sonically with more pro attributes to it, which can replace a more traditional system in earnest.

    • @Bigtel1970
      @Bigtel1970  4 роки тому +2

Yeah, I guess there ARE better systems depending on what your application is and what your overall sound requirements are (and budget). EQ can sort out most missing frequencies in most cases though, so sometimes it's easier to buy what immediately suits your application - in my case I play mainly solo guitar stuff at the weddings and then I run the acoustic open mics and the 3-piece acoustic band I'm in and these systems are pretty much spot on for doing all that. So far I'm very happy with these setups. I'm doing our first gig as the 3 piece tomorrow night just using the 1K's and no desk so we'll see how that does - I'll capture some video to post up too. Cheers for the input though - it's good for others to compare systems and have 'real-life' people who've tried both to be able to judge. Cheers!

Hi Danny, yeah - the EQ - it does seem to be a bit unusual to have just one dial for an EQ.. but funnily enough it does a very good job of making a good sound. So far I've used this whole thing very successfully in different setups, from having two linked to a desk and having everyone plug into the desk (pretty much what this video was all about) down to just me with a electro-classical guitar plugged directly in - and everything has sounded good. Yesterday, for the first time, I played at a wedding ceremony and had a singer with me. I plugged straight into the Stagepas with my guitar and the radio mic was also plugged straight into it too. We only used the reverb that was built in (my personal preference is the HALL setting) and this was lovely and clear. The reverbs are all good quality, in fact they're actually the best I've heard on a bit of gear - it actually outdoes my Mackie desk for how nice and smooth the HALL reverbs sounds. I'm not personally a fan of delay reverbs or 'vocal' reverbs which some units title themselves - they always have that horrible delay/echo to them.
In short.. the reverbs are great, the EQ does a brilliant job and, at the 12 o'clock position vocals are clear and bright with beautiful depth. In my opinion, if someone sounds bad through this unit it's more likely that THEY are bad... not the unit!
Now that I've got used to the initial teething problems I'm super chuffed with these things and would certainly recommend them... and Yamaha, if you're reading this, you can buy me a drink anytime :)

The only thing would be to have two devices (phones, tablets) connected, one to each and then two people control it. Probably not too difficult or annoying if there’s only two of you in your band using just the inputs from one unit, but a fuller band using all 8 channels would require 2 people to get the levels right. Thanks for the video. Why not just send an XLR from Right out of the mixer to channel one set to Line input on one of the Yamahas, and send an XLR from the Left out of the mixer to channel one set to Line input to the other Yamaha. Wouldn't this accomplish the same thing, giving you a stereo spread and full control over left and right volume from the mixer, assuming that you set the two Yamaha systems at the same gain on their respective channel 1 inputs and master levels?

John Ciambriello Ho John, you’d think it would be that straightforward eh?! No.. this is what I first tried (this was how my Bose units worked - perfectly)... unfortunately the 3 channels that have Mic/Line selectors are too underpowered using the Line selection and it meant having to turn the desk right up - and that gave unpredictable results. On a Mic setting it all came in way too hot and was useless.
Once you use the ST channel inputs then it really works. I tested it for the first time at performance levels last night at an open mic I run and it was a complete success. Looks like I’ll be keeping them now!

But these are a happy mix of the both.. you wouldn't be disappointed. 3. One knob EQ... not even worth considering that a worry. Basically it's like this: Need more bass? Turn it a bit one way. Need less bass and more top? Turn it the other.
